<br /> In a bid to prevent misleading advertisements from fooling consumers, the Department of Consumer Affairs (<keyword id="2596452" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="DoCA">DoCA</keyword>) under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has tied up with the Advertising Standard Council of India (<keyword id="169284" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ASCI">ASCI</keyword>) to implement self regulation for advertisers as well as pass strictures against the violating advertisers.<br />
	 <br />
	“The problem of misleading advertisements and the consequent unfair trade practices that arise is widespread across sectors, mediums and geographies.  The DoCA's effort is to build a coalition of stakeholders to combat this menace - partnering with the ASCI is an important step”, said G. Gurucharan, additional secretary at the DoCA.<br />

	The partnership is expected to bring in stricter rules for advertisements, especially in six key sectors that include agriculture and food, health, education, housing, financial services and e-commerce.<br />
	 <br />
	Under the partnership, the DoCA will redirect any complaint received by it to the ASCI in order to maintain clarity in the processing of complaints against advertisements that has already been received by the Advertising Standard Council of India.<br />

	The ASCI will evaluate the complaints across different medium such as print, packaging, internet, outdoor, wall paintings, posters, bill boards among others.<br />

	Commenting on the association, Narendra Ambwani, the ASCI chairman, noted that “It is a moment of pride for the ASCI to have received such support from the DoCA. Earlier, our work has been recognized by various government bodies like Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), Medical Council of India (MCI) etc. It’s highly motivating to see such developments and this partnership has widened the ASCI’s scope for complaints.”<br />

	At present, the operational details of the tie-up are still under process. However, the DoCA has asked the ASCI to show a red flag to advertisements that clearly violate the law. “This would enable prompt action against such non-scrupulous advertisers and protect consumer interest,” added Ambawani. <br />

New Delhi: The <keyword id="19938513" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Consumer-Affairs" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Department of Consumer Affairs" meta.hostid="268" meta.entityid="Department of Consumer Affairs">Department of Consumer Affairs</keyword> has constituted a committee of experts to recommend a robust framework for a <keyword id="22964001" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Repairability-Index" source="keywords">Repairability Index</keyword> aimed at empowering consumers and promoting <keyword id="20128078" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sustainable-practices" source="keywords">sustainable practices</keyword> within the tech industry. The committee, chaired by Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) Additional Secretary Bharat Khera, will develop the Repairability Index to provide consumers with greater transparency on repair information for their products and foster a more sustainable technology industry. <br /><br /> The National Workshop on the Right to Repair in the <keyword id="20881182" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-and-electronics" source="keywords">Mobile and Electronics</keyword> Sector, convened on August 29, brought together industry stakeholders to establish a consensus on the framework for evaluating components for the Repairability Index, fostering longevity in product design and democratising access to repair information and spare parts. <br /><br /> "The framework on Repairability Index aimed to provide consumers with essential information about product repairability besides seamless access to spare parts will enable informed purchasing decisions," the DoCA said in a statement. <br /><br /> The committee, which includes representatives from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and industry stakeholders, is expected to submit a comprehensive report on the Repairability Index framework by November 15. <br /><br /> The key components of the proposed Repair Ecosystem include comprehensive repair information, accessible spare parts, affordable tools, modular product design and ensuring the economic feasibility of repairs for consumers. <br /><br /> "By standardising the assessment of repairability, the index will create an ecosystem where consumers can easily compare products and choose options that align with the ethos of mindful consumption and sustainability," the DoCA statement said.

That's<span> nearly double 2018's total of about 40,000 fires. The current surge marks an 83% increase in wildfires over the same period of 2018, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-rainforest-experiencing-record-number-of-wildfires-this-year-2019-8">Brazil's National Institute for Space Research reported</a>. The largest state in Brazil, Amazonas, declared a state of emergency on Monday.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>Already, 2019 has the highest number of fires observed in a single year since researchers began keeping track in 2013 - and there are still four months to go.</span></p><h2>'The sky randomly turned dark'</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>As the world's largest rainforest, the Amazon plays a crucial role in keeping our planet's carbon-dioxide levels in check. Plants and trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen back into the air in their process of photosynthesis. This is why the Amazon, which covers 2.1 million square miles,<span>&#xa0;</span><a href="http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20130226-amazon-lungs-of-the-planet">is often referred to as the "lungs of the planet"</a>: The forest produces<span> 20% of the oxygen in our planet's atmosphere.</span>&#xa0;</p><p><span>Typically, the Amazonian dry season runs from July to October, peaking in late September. Wetter weather during the rest of the year minimizes the risk of fires at other times. But during the dry season, blazes can spark from natural sources, like lightning strikes. Farmers and loggers also purposefully set fire to the rainforest</span> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-rainforest-experiencing-record-breaking-deforestation-2019-7">to clear swaths of the Amazon</a> for industrial or agricultural use.</p><p><span>The fires raging in the Amazon now have widespread impacts on the rest of Brazil. The smoke plumes from the blazes spread from the state of Amazonas to the nearby states of Pará and Mato Grosso, and even </span><span>blotted out the sun in São Paolo - a city more than 2,000 miles away.</span></p><p>&#xa0;</p><p><span>On Monday, people in São Paolo reported on social media that the sky had gone dark between 3 and 4 p.m. local time.&#xa0;</span></p><p>&#xa0;</p><p><span>In total, the blazes</span><span>&#xa0;have created <a href="https://www.windy.com/pt/-Concentra%C3%A7%C3%A3o-de-CO-cosc?cosc,-15.982,-59.359,6">a layer of smoke</a> estimated to be </span><a href="https://www.newsweek.com/brazils-bolsonaro-dismisses-outcry-over-record-number-forest-fires-i-used-called-captain-1455415">1.2 million square miles</a><span> wide. </span>This image from the European Union's Copernicus Satellite shows the smoke slicing north to south through Brazil like a knife.</p><p>&#xa0;</p><h2><span>'Setting the Amazon aflame'</span></h2><p>This week of fires comes on the heels of another worrisome milestone for the world's largest rainforest. The month of July set a new record for the most deforestation ever in the Amazon in a single month,<span>&#xa0;</span><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jul/25/amazonian-rainforest-near-unrecoverable-tipping-point">The Guardian reported</a>. The Amazon shrunk by 519 square miles (1,345 square kilometers). That's more than twice the area of Tokyo.</p><p>Data<span>&#xa0;</span><a href="http://terrabrasilis.dpi.inpe.br/app/dashboard/alerts/legal/amazon/aggregated/#">from Brazilian satellites</a> indicated that about three football fields' worth of Amazonian trees fell every minute last month. The total deforested area in July 2019 was<span>&#xa0;</span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/28/world/americas/brazil-deforestation-amazon-bolsonaro.html">up 39%</a> from July of last year.</p><p>The deforestation is directly linked to fires in the Amazon, since farmers sometimes set the forest ablaze to make room for livestock pastures and crop fields. These purposeful burns can then get out of control.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p><span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-rainforest-experiencing-record-breaking-deforestation-2019-7">Brazil controls a lion's share of the Amazon</a>. However, its president, Jair Bolsonaro, has indicated that protecting the rainforest is&#xa0;<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brazil-president-bolsonaro-destroy-the-amazon-2018-10">not one of his top priorities</a> - Bolsonaro supports development projects like a highway and hydroelectric dam in the Amazon.</span></p><p><span>His administration has also cut down on the seizing of illegally harvested timber. In 2018 (u</span><span>nder the previous administration), 883,000 cubic feet of illegal timber was seized. As of May 15, Bolsonaro's government agencies had only seized 1,410 cubic feet, <a href="https://psmag.com/environment/brazils-government-is-gutting-environmental-protections-from-the-inside">Pacific Standard reported</a>.</span></p><p>What's more, between January and May of this year, Bolsonaro's government lowered the number of fines it levied for<span>&#xa0;</span><a href="https://psmag.com/environment/brazils-government-is-gutting-environmental-protections-from-the-inside">illegal deforestation and mining</a><span>&#xa0;</span>(down 34% from the same period in 2018) and decreased its monitoring of illegal activity in the rainforest.</p><p>On Tuesday, when <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-brazil-politics/brazils-bolsonaro-says-ngos-may-be-setting-fires-in-amazon-rainforest-idUSKCN1VB1BY">Reuters reporters asked</a> Bolsonaro about the record rate of uncontrolled fires in Brazil, he pointed to the fact that it's a time of year when farmers purposefully use fire to clear land - a seasonal cycle called "queimada."&#xa0;</p><p><span>"I used to be called Captain Chainsaw. Now I am Nero, setting the Amazon aflame," Bolsonaro <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-rainforest-experiencing-record-number-of-wildfires-this-year-2019-8">said</a>. "But it is the season of the queimada."</span></p><h2>Warmer, drier conditions make it easier for flames to spread</h2><p>Warmer conditions due to climate change can allow blazes that crop up during the dry season to grow bigger than they otherwise might have. Global warming also<span> increases the likelihood and frequency of wildfires around the world.</span></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p><span>Overall, this year is on pace to be the third hottest on record globally,&#xa0;<a href="https://medialibrary.climatecentral.org/resources/half-year-checkup-global-heat-and-national-rain-2019">according to Climate Central</a>.
