Pretty much everybody woke up last Friday feeling like America's labor market was in fine shape (to the extent the average person was thinking about it at all). Maybe things <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/january-jobs-report-labor-market-good-economy-inflation-wages-2024-2">weren't perfect</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/economy-housing-market-mortgage-buying-car-interest-rates-new-jobs-2024-3">workers weren't living in</a> the "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-great-reshuffle-upward-mobility-quitting-jobs">world is your oyster</a>" situation they were in 2021 and 2022, but in general, things seemed pretty strong.And then, at 8:30 a.m. ET, everything changed. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unemployment-rate-job-growth-july-labor-market-economic-data-2024-7">jobs report</a> said the US economy added 114,000 jobs in July, far fewer than the 176,000 jobs that economists expected. The unemployment rate jumped to 4.3% from 4.1% the previous month. For some context, back in April it was at 3.9% and had been under 4% for the longest stretch in decades. The weakness of the jobs report tipped the worry scale and <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-selloff-today-jobs-report-recession-unemployment-tech-earnings-2024-8">sent markets into meltdown mode</a>. Many investors decided it was time to panic after all.While a single data point isn't a good reason to change one's entire narrative, the report served as a wake-up call that danger is closer than a lot of people thought. The cracks in the economic foundation are increasingly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-unemployment-interest-rates-economy-recession-soft-landing-2024-8">impossible to ignore</a>. While it's not in disaster territory, the labor market has been weakening for a while, and it's not clear what's going to reverse that trend. The report's release just a few days after the Federal Reserve decided to hold interest rates steady rather than cut them in an attempt to restabilize the economy also fueled fears that the central bank is behind the curve and that a recession may be on the horizon."There was a lot of data that was sort of in the greenish area, and now there's a lot more data that's flashing yellow lights," said Guy Berger, the director of economic research at the Burning Glass Institute, a labor-analytics firm. Outside the July jobs report, there were plenty of signs the labor market was cooling off. The June Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, also released last week, showed a slowdown in hiring, with the number of people starting new jobs back to where it was before the pandemic in 2020. The rate at which people are quitting their jobs was back at pre-pandemic levels, too. The positive news was that layoffs remained low, but people getting a pink slip is usually a lagging indicator — businesses are more likely to slow down on hiring new people before they send their current workers packing. Overall, the report made it clear that the job market <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/promotions-salaries-cut-career-advancement-stagnation-2024-7">isn't as dynamic as it was just a couple of years ago</a>."When hiring goes down, it doesn't always lead to a recession, but it's usually the first response, and we have seen hiring consistently come down," said Skanda Amarnath, the executive director of the advocacy group Employ America.There are other signs of weakness, too: The Conference Board's Employment Trends Index fell for the second consecutive month in July, which is generally a sign of a potential slowdown. The share of respondents who say jobs are hard to get ticked up, though it's still well below where it was in recent recessionary periods. For those who want a raise, there's also some tough news: Wage growth is slowing. The Employment Cost Index showed that wages for private-sector workers grew at 3.4% in the second quarter, the slowest pace since September 2020.The theme of the labor market in recent months has been one of softening. While the economy is still adding jobs consistently, it's doing so at a lower rate than it was during the pandemic recovery. Basically, if you like your job, or if you don't, you probably should keep it. This was to be expected — most economists say the pace at which we were adding jobs in 2021 and 2022 wasn't sustainable. The question since then has been what getting back to normal would look like and what's to keep normal from tipping into negative. Once the unemployment rate starts to tick up, what's to keep it from rising further instead of staying put?One factor that has put investors, economists, and observers on edge is the Sahm rule, a recession indicator named after the former Fed economist Claudia Sahm. It says that if the three-month moving average of the unemployment rate rises by 0.50 percentage points or more over its low over the previous 12 months, we're at the start of a recession. If that seems confusing, here's the only thing you really need to know: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sahm-rule-recession-outlook-indicator-triggered-unemployment-rate-jobs-report-2024-8">The July jobs report triggered the Sahm rule</a>.Sahm, who is now the chief economist at New Century Advisors, told me that the country is not in a recession at this moment and that there are reasons to think her namesake rule is a bit out of whack. The growing number of people entering the labor force, whether they're immigrants entering the country or people coming into the job market from the sidelines, might throw her rule off. But that doesn't mean we're in the clear."I think the Sahm rule is overstating the current weakness, but there is momentum there under the hood," she said. "This is a weaker labor market, and we haven't gotten a sign that it's done weakening."Amarnath echoed the point that there is some reason to think this time is different. The labor-force participation rate for prime-age workers (people who are 25 to 54) is near historic highs, and employment in recent years has been high and stable. It's worth remembering that the current unemployment rate is far from catastrophic. It's around, or even below, the level many economists would consider full employment — or at least they did before the past couple of years suggested it was lower."By historical standards, we are still very much at full employment," said Alí Bustamante, the director of the Worker Power and Economic Security program at the Roosevelt Institute, a progressive think tank. "I think one of the things of the labor market of the past two years is that it's largely shaped our understanding of what full employment actually looks like."Bustamante added: "A couple of years ago, people would've seen a 4.3% unemployment rate, and they would not blink an eye just because they wouldn't have connoted that with any considerable amount of slack in the economy." Despite encouraging historical comparisons, the message of the July jobs report is that the labor market's momentum is heading in the wrong direction, and the risk that things could get worse is very real."There's some data that signals that we're probably in the midst of a slowing in job growth, a slowing in wage growth, a slowing in all these patterns," Amarnath said. "If this slowdown continues in the manner it is, it'll be a distinction without a difference. We'll be in a recession anyway if that's the case."One way to reverse the job-market trends, experts believe, is for the Fed to cut interest rates. While slicing 0.25 percentage points off its main interest rate would be a minor adjustment in the overall cost for businesses, it would be a start in lowering borrowing costs for loans like mortgages and credit-card rates while also inspiring businesses and consumers to keep on spending. The Fed had the opportunity to lower interest rates in late July and didn't, and unless it undertakes an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-rate-cuts-recession-outlook-economy-job-market-interest-rates-2024-8">emergency rate cut</a> — which is unlikely — any moves are likely to wait until its next meeting, in September. In his remarks after the July decision, Fed Chair Jay Powell seemed pretty chill about the jobs market, though he said that, as always, the central bank would act if need be. The "need be" sign is now flashing."Things are shakier," Berger said. "The Fed probably has some margin for error, but it doesn't have infinite margin for error."There's more data to come between now and September, including the August jobs report. Nobody should be losing a ton of sleep over the state of the labor market or over the economy overall. "You have Big Oil doing so immensely well under the federal tax code at the expense of the consumer," Wyden told Insider, adding he believes his measure will "connect" with people. Separate polls from <a href="https://groundworkcollaborative.org/news/new-poll-strong-majority-of-voters-blame-corporations-for-inflation-taking-advantage-of-the-pandemic-to-raise-prices/">the left-leaning Groundwork Collaborative</a> and <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/22056399-2022-05-12-post-schar-school-trend-for-release">The Washington Post</a> show a majority of voters pin the blame on oil companies trying to profit off the surge in gas prices."Profits are four times what they were prior to the war in Ukraine," Lindsay Owens, executive director of the Groundwork Collaborative who <a href="https://groundworkcollaborative.org/news/new-research-shows-oil-and-gas-companies-price-gouge-consumers-after-record-smashing-year/">conducted extensive research</a> on the subject, said in an interview. "The oil company executives are bringing in huge profits and bragging about it to shareholders in earnings calls."Sens. Those are modeled after programs recently established in Italy and the United Kingdom providing checks to the poorest families.The Biden administration has kept the door open to a windfall profits tax as well. But some liberal and conservative economists are criticizing windfall taxes as potentially inflationary and damaging to efforts at increasing crude production."The Wyden plan would partly be passed onto consumers in the form of higher prices and would discourage production," Furman said. "It is not the right approach.""I think the fact that the Biden administration is floating a windfall profits tax or saying they're gonna consider it shows that they're in blame-shifting mode, not really constructive mode," Donald Schneider, deputy head of US Policy at Piper Sandler and a former House Republican aide, told Insider.

Biden has few options left to quickly bring down gas prices. Now he's making a big bet by bashing Big Oil and turning to a brutal leader for help.

	First of all, these are the holier than thou places, right? Which means Satan will have his rear kicked by the bouncers here. So does any form of evil. These places have the greatest form of insulation, from the bad things and blah blah. 
 However, what happens when the one you are going to take the purest form of blessings from, considering the place, is actually the bad boy in disguise? How can you verify the authenticity of the <keyword id="6357370" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="god">God</keyword> in that region? Or the miracle one is to receive from visiting such a spot at such a time (read:sacred) of the year. Take for example, the very recent Haj (1,000 dead), <keyword id="6356611" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amarnath">Amarnath</keyword> 1996 (256 dead), <keyword id="52356" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kumbh-Mela">Kumbh Mela</keyword> 1954 (800 dead), 1990 Mina Disaster (1,426 dead). We, somehow, have come to believe that taking a dip, touching the stone, kissing the Pope's ring is going to glorify the virility of our wishes and therefore, a better reality for us. It is a beautifully civilised shortcut. No doubt there. 

	The hard truth is that these places are so little in their land size radius, it makes it impossible and very inconvenient for the prodigal numbers of people trying to live their moment of pious obligation in the G-spots (God Spots) set out in their mythological records that is deemed very legit and appropriate even to this date. 
 

	When we were kids, our fathers and mothers would tell us don't do this and don't do that. Back then, we were kids. We had to listen to them. If we didn't, we were grounded or spanked. Then as we grow, we listen to them less and less. Eventually, we listen to them to nothing at all. 
 

	Our Gods have never been shy in asking for blood offering. Be it from Abhraham. Be it from Muhammed. Be it from Jesus. I feel bad for Jesus though. Because in his case, he was the offering. 
 

	God, as we have come to see, is no less than a bloody dictator. He wants this. He wants that. He tells us that if we didn't give him what he demands of us, shit will fall on our heads. Or we will fall into shit. Either way, we are shit out of luck. See the obligation that the Gods put us through. Yet somehow we still want to bloody please him, even if we are grown, old and haggard. Where is the dignity man is supposed to have? He is after all, a form of the God, right? We are made in his image. We may not be as broad, and magical and mystical as him, because for one thing we are here and bloody bleed. Whereas, he is hiding somewhere in the middle of nowhere, and simply follows the Rockefeller PR and exhibits that he is just planting his good seed for the human feed and that's him doing his good deed without a shred of greed. 
 

	I think God is dead. Really. If those big stars up there have a shelf life, so do the Gods. They may be eternal. Again, eternity has a validity too. Ask your mobile service provider, he will tell you. They know what lifetime means. Even Hancock's people died. I say - God's live up to a maximum of 1000 years and that's it. They get bored of life too. Whether like the Egyptians they had their own personal, eccentric and artistic 'book of the dead' or not, eternity does also have a coffin. 
 

	Remember the 40 days and 40 nights? That's what is happening here. The wars, the pilgrimages, the natural calamities, the deadly viral infections - all of these are established protocols of cleansing. In one way or another, we end up being a casualty in their headlines. 
 

	The new technological superlatives which we spit and rhyme every other morning is only as strong as the last prayer we just made. The Federal Reserve chair doesn't want to be perceived as having a horse in the race come November, especially when one of said horses — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-interest-rate-cuts-powell-help-democrats-win-elections-inflation-2024-2">Donald Trump</a> — is definitely going to be attacking him from any angle he can.Powell, who was appointed as Fed chair by Trump and then reappointed by Joe Biden, has gone to great lengths to emphasize that the central bank is above the political fray. He has repeatedly emphasized that he and the other members of the Federal Open Market Committee are focused solely on economic data when it comes to a decision on monetary policy — which, at the moment, is whether to cut interest rates.At a hearing Wednesday, Rep. Patrick McHenry, the Republican from North Carolina who chairs the House Financial Services Committee, noted that some people were predicting that the Fed would cut interest rates multiple times this year, while others predicted it would do nothing. The divergence between the cuts and no-cuts camps has been the biggest economic argument of the year."What say you?" McHenry asked Powell. The Fed chair's response: "I say that, really, it will depend on the economy."Beyond the academic argument, whether the Fed cuts interest rates has a significant political bearing this year. The economy and perceptions of it will be vital factors in determining what voters do when they head to the ballot box in the fall. It's an economy that Powell very much has a hand in shaping. Because of that, he really is in the center of the storm."Implicitly, explicitly, passively, or actively, the Fed is making decisions that can have high-leverage influence over the economy and economic outcomes," Skanda Amarnath, the executive director of the advocacy group Employ America, said. "The Fed matters to the state of the economy, and the state of the economy isn't irrelevant to electoral outcomes."At the moment, the US economy is in pretty good shape. The labor market is robust, and growth is strong. Inflation is coming back down, though it's not yet at the Fed's 2% target. A soft landing — meaning things settle back down to earth without a recession — is in view. Still, while <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/etf/consumer-sentiment-hits-31-month-high-in-february-inflation-expectations-edge-higher-1033076668">consumer sentiment has improved</a> from where it was, say, six months ago, it's not great. Inflation has cooled, but prices are still higher than they used to be. So are interest rates, which the Fed hiked to combat inflation. Voters are unhappy about higher prices, and they feel weighed down by high interest rates, too. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w32163">recent working paper</a> from former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and a group of economists found that high borrowing costs were a major driver weighing down people's moods."Consumers, unlike modern economists, consider the cost of money part of their cost of living," the authors wrote.It tracks. Interest rates may seem abstract, but they can have a real impact on how people view their financial situations. If you're in the market for a house right now, mortgage rates are eye-popping compared with a few years ago. Maybe you waited for car prices to settle, only to discover now that you can't afford a loan. Or you run a small business, and suddenly the cost of borrowing keeps you up at night. The White House can't go back in time and reverse the sudden rise in inflation — in which the Fed, by waiting too long to raise interest rates, had a hand. But lowering interest rates should make people feel better about economic conditions and could give Democrats and Biden a boost. While the Fed has projected that it will start cutting rates at some point this year, the timing is an open question. March? May? June? Later? The answer to that question could seriously influence the outcome in November."Interest rates are a big reason why people are frustrated, independent of inflation, independent of whatever other economic outcomes may be frustrating," Amarnath said.I'm not saying anything new here — Trump says it, too. He's well aware lower interest rates would boost the economy, lift people's moods, and, ultimately, help the party in charge. It's why he publicly worried the Fed would lower interest rates to help Hillary Clinton's presidential bid ahead of the 2016 election and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-considering-firing-jerome-powell-fed-chair-rate-hike-2018-12">repeatedly</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-attacks-federal-reserve-powell-over-economy-gm-rate-hikes-2018-11">berated</a> Powell and the Fed over interest-rate increases while he was in the White House.The Fed is an independent body designed to be outside politics, so it's not subject to short-term pressures as it tries to steward the economy. There have been moments in the past when presidents have tried to sway it — often with disastrous results. Richard Nixon pressured the Fed to keep interest rates low before his reelection, which helped cement the disastrous inflation of the 1970s. Ronald Reagan <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ronald-reagan-fed-chair-volcker-trump-2018-10#:~:text=According%20to%20Volcker%2C%20Reagan%20did,election%2C%22%20Baker%20told%20Volcker.">got the message</a> to the central bank on his wants during his presidency, getting his chief of staff to tell then-Fed Chair Paul Volcker not to raise rates ahead of his reelection campaign. Volcker wasn't planning to raise rates anyway. In recent decades, however, most presidents shied away from saying much, until Trump. Most observers take Powell at his word that the Fed is not going to take politics into account in interest-rate decisions, even in an election year. But that doesn't mean he exists in a bubble, either."I don't think Powell is thinking about whether Trump or Biden will tell him to cut or hike rates," said Elizabeth Pancotti, the director of special initiatives at Roosevelt Forward, a sister organization of the progressive think tank the Roosevelt Institute. "It might affect how he messages the rate hikes or cuts."Even in non-election years, Fed officials are incredibly cautious with their words. The political optics could make them even more so."I take Powell at his word that they're not making policy with an eye to explicitly putting their finger on the scale for one party or one presidential candidate over the other, but the Fed certainly has to manage political risk," Sarah Binder, a political scientist at George Washington University, said. Full FOMC-meeting transcripts, which are kept secret for five years, show the Fed isn't immune to political winds. It doesn't want to upset Congress. It needs Congress on its side. They don't want Congress reopening the Federal Reserve Act," Binder said. "The Fed can't avoid the political winds here."Not everything about the economy is under the Fed's control, of course, meaning there's only so much Powell can be blamed for, politically or otherwise. If the avian flu strikes again and chickens start to get sick en masse, egg prices are going to go back up. The central bank can't do much about oil and gas prices, which depend on global market forces or geopolitical turmoil. What's more, most Americans don't think about the Fed very much at all as a factor in their economic lives, even if it is one.Powell is walking a tightrope right now in more ways than one. The economic risks of the Fed's decisions are real — if it cuts rates too soon, inflation could start to pick up again, and if it waits too long, it could put too much of a damper on the economy and push the country into a recession. It's a bit of a Goldilocks situation, except a lot more is at stake in finding what's just right than a good night's sleep."They've got to do the best job they can. The ante for them internally is to do this just by the book as much as possible as an institution," Diane Swonk, the chief economist at KPMG US, said. With the news of demise of J&amp;K Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed goes a dignified man from this world who lived the life of a true Indian Muslim to say the least. Born to a humble family in south Kashmir’s Bijbehara area of Anantnag district on January 12, 1936, he looked at the conflicted region of Kashmir through the prism of Indian ethos. 
 
Several times, he lifted the tricolor in the Valley knowing that it was life-threatening from him to do so. In a political career spanning nearly six decades, the veteran politician who entered the political field in the 1950s emerged as a rival power centre to the mighty Abdullahs, making friends with parties following conflicting ideologies to suit his political agenda.

Childhood: Born in Baba Mohalla of Bijbehara, Sayeed had his early education at a local school and graduated from SP College, Srinagar. He went on to obtain a law degree and Master's degree in Arab History from Aligarh Muslim University. 
 
Late 1950s: He cut his political teeth early, having joined the Democratic National Conference of GM Sadiq in the late 1950s. Recognising the potential of the young lawyer, Sadiq appointed him as the District Convenor of the party. 
 
1962: Sayeed was elected to the state assembly from Bijbehara, the seat which he retained five years later. He was appointed a Deputy Minister by Sadiq, who by then had become Chief Minister. However, he fell out with the party a few years later and joined the Indian National Congress, a courageous but risky decision at that time given the unstinted support of most Kashmiris to Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, who was in jail. Considered an astute organiser and administrator, Sayeed ensured that Congress not only got a foothold in the Valley but created pockets of staunch support for the party. 
 
1972: He became a Cabinet Minister and also Congress party's leader in the Legislative Council. He was made the state Congress president a couple of years later. As he rapidly grew in stature, Sayeed saw himself as the next Chief Minister of the state. However, all hopes he might have harboured of occupying the hot seat were dashed when the then Prime Minister <keyword id="6354478" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indira-Gandhi">Indira Gandhi</keyword> entered into an accord with Abdullah and facilitated his return as chief minister after a hiatus of 11 years, much against the wishes of Congress workers in general and Sayeed in particular. 
 
Not the one to give up easily, Sayeed engineered a coup of sorts ahead of the 1977 elections as Congress withdrew support to Abdullah's government. The aim was to have a Congress Chief Minister - which would have been Sayeed - in place for elections to control the official machinery but Governor LK Jha brought the state under Governor's rule. It was the first time that Jammu and Kashmir was brought under Governor's rule. . 
 
1977: Assembly election results killed Sayeed's dream of becoming the Chief Minister as Abdullah's National Conference came to power with a thumping majority. 
 
1986: As Farooq Abdullah warmed up to <keyword id="12596" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajiv-Gandhi">Rajiv Gandhi</keyword> in 1986 to ensure his return as Chief Minister ahead of the 1987 assembly elections, Sayeed was shifted to Delhi and appointed as the Union Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation. <keyword id="222693" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-National">The National</keyword> Conference and Abdullahs have privately held the wily man from south Kashmir responsible for the intra-party rebellion against and subsequent dismissal of Farooq Abdullah by Governor Jagmohan in 1984. The power tussle between Farooq and his brother-in-law GM Shah led to a permanent estrangement and also saw the latter becoming Chief Minister with Congress support. 
Sayeed was a key player when Governor's Rule was imposed for the second time in the state in 1986. Shah's tenure also did not last long as Congress headed by Sayeed withdrew support to his government leading to imposition of Governor's rule for the second time in 1986. 
 
1987: Sayeed meanwhile quit as tourism minister in 1987 and later co-founded Jan Morcha with VP Singh, who had quit Congress over the Bofors scandal. 
 
1989: He won the Lok Sabha election from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh as a <keyword id="123462" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Janata-Dal">Janata Dal</keyword> candidate and became Union Home Minister in VP Singh's cabinet. The high-points in the political journey of Sayeed, who would have turned 80 on January 12, was his being catapulted to the chair of free India's first Muslim Home Minister at a time when militancy broke out in Kashmir and, years later, becoming the Chief Minister of the restive state for a second time in 2015, heading a coalition with BJP, which had its first brush with power in the only Muslim-majority state. 
 
Sayeed's stint in the Home Ministry, at a time when militancy had begun to rear its ugly head in his home state, would, however, be most remembered for the kidnapping of his third daughter Rubaiya by JKLF. The militants demanded freeing five of their comrades in exchange for Rubaiya's freedom and let her off only after their demand had been met. The kidnapping and subsequent release of the militants, according to Sayeed's rivals, projected India as a "soft state" for the first time. He appointed Jagmohan as Governor despite protests by Farooq Abdullah, who resigned and the state came under Governor's rule again in 1990. 
 
1998: Towards the end of PV Narsimha Rao's tenure as Prime Minister, Sayeed returned to Congress fold with daughter Mehbooba Mufti. Sayeed won the Anantnag Lok Sabha seat in 1998 general elections, while Mehbooba became Congress MLA in 1996. 
While the state was brought under <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/A-Fractured-Verdict-Paves-Way-For-Governors-Rule/articleshow/45826306.cms">Governor's Rule in 2002 and 2014</a> due to Sayeed taking time to thrash out coalition dispensations with Congress and BJP respectively, it was his manoeuvrings that saw a democratically elected government give way to administration by the Raj Bhawan in 2008. 
 
1999: With his dream of becoming Chief Minister of the state still unfulfilled, Sayeed parted ways with Congress and floated a regional outfit - Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) - in 1999. Some of the things associated with the PDP are considered exemplary of Sayeed's political genius. 
The green flag and pen-inkpot election symbol of the PDP were lifted straight from the Muslim United Front (MUF) - the Jamaat-e-Islami-led conglomerate of anti-National Conference, anti-Congress parties in 1987 assembly elections. 
 
2002: Though MUF received wide public support in the Valley, it had only four seats to show. Its symbols found ready acceptance in the Valley as PDP made significant gains and won 16 seats in the 2002 assembly elections. Although way short of majority in the 87-member house, Sayeed managed to bargain with Congress and secure a three-year stint as the Chief Minister on rotational basis. Sayeed was sworn in as the ninth chief minister of state on November 2, 2002 - fulfilling a long-standing dream. 
 
2008: The wily politician, who enjoyed good relations across the political spectrum at national level, saw his PDP grow to 21 seats in 2008 Assembly elections but surprisingly decided to sit in the opposition. He withdrew support to coalition government headed by Congress' Ghulam Nabi Azad in July 2008 following widespread protests over the Amarnath land allotment row that pitted the people of Hindu-dominated Jammu region against the Muslim-majority Kashmir Valley. 
 
2014: The youngest party in the state continued to gain in strength as it not only won all the three Lok Sabha seats in the Valley in 2014 general elections but also emerged as the single largest party in the state elections later in the year. Sayeed became the unanimous choice for Chief Minister when PDP and BJP reached an agreement to form a coalition government and took oath on March 1, 2015.

"The weak are falling off. Strength, faith, and bravery are necessary now, more than ever," says another comment in the channel. Other messages from the days after <a href="https://www.insider.com/all-the-us-capitol-pro-trump-riot-arrests-charges-names-2021-1">pro-Trump rioters sieged the US Capitol</a> to protest Joe Biden's election win were clear in their threats, sometimes directing them towards the president himself: "If Trump does nothing I hope they string him up and execute him like the spineless traitor he is." On Facebook or Twitter, such messages would most likely be quickly moderated and censored, but on Telegram, a private-messaging app that's been swiftly embraced by conservatives following Trump's social media bans, messages face less strict, if any, scrutiny. Throughout various Telegram channels reviewed by Insider, people voiced their desire for further violence and real-world action ahead of Biden's inauguration.Despite an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fbi-bulletin-warns-pro-trump-armed-protests-capitol-inauguration-day-2021-1">FBI warning</a> about potential violence organized online, it seems that for now, extremists and the far-right have found a new home.A Telegram representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. <h2>The far-right has gradually been moving to other platforms</h2><div type="image" title="Parler logo" height="1020" width="1363" msid="80293038" hostid="261"></div>Those on the far-right have been gradually leaving mainstream platforms for years in favor of places where less content moderation often allows for the spread of misinformation, conspiracy theories, and violent <keyword id="139533" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="extremism">extremism</keyword>.Fringe right-wing users have migrated to platforms that are either explicitly used to host conversations that would be moderated elsewhere, such as Gab, or are simply profiting off of inaction, such as Telegram, which has seen <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-trump-signal-telegram-whatsapp-20210114-k2qwdfook5clvc6qoiujnwtehi-story.html">skyrocketing download rates</a> after Trump was banned from his mainstream social media profiles.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-parler-rose-from-obscurity-conservative-alternative-twitter-platform-2020-11">Parler</a>, a Twitter copycat beloved by the far right since its conception in 2018, emerged as a favorite for those fleeing (or banned from) mainstream social media. Last fall, as COVID-19 and election misinformation was being moderated more heavily on mainstream platforms, many <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/parler-backed-by-mercer-family-makes-play-for-conservatives-mad-at-facebook-twitter-11605382430">conservatives posted on Facebook telling their friends to join them on Parler</a>. But after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-parler-rose-from-obscurity-conservative-alternative-twitter-platform-2020-11">Amazon Web Services cut ties with the platform on Sunday</a>, citing violent content related to the Capitol riots, the website has been offline for days. The company has said the platform may never return.Parler has since registered its domain with Epik, a domain registrar that the <a href="https://www.splcenter.org/hatewatch/2019/01/11/problem-epik-proportions">Southern Poverty Law Center</a> said in 2019 was "cornering the market on websites where hate speech is thriving," giving it another chance at life online. Gab, a Facebook copycat, is also registered with Epik. But in the interim, Trump's most ardent supporters and those seeking to organize more real-world action ahead of the inauguration are finding new places to gather. <h2>Telegram has emerged as a gathering place for the far-right, despite the platform's stated intent to ramp up moderation</h2><div type="image" title="FILE PHOTO: The Telegram messaging app logo is seen on a website in Singapore November 19, 2015. REUTERS/Thomas White/File Photo" height="2275" width="3033" msid="80293044" hostid="261"></div>Telegram is mostly used for semi-public group-chat messaging, but it does offer some private and encrypted messaging options. Its search function makes it easy to find like-minded individuals. In addition to right-wing extremists joining the app, the platform's recent rise is also due to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/whatsapp-facebook-data-signal-download-telegram-encrypted-messaging-2021-1">a change in WhatsApp policies</a>. Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, said that users would have to share their data with the parent company starting February 8. That helped spike downloads for Telegram, which has similar functionality to WhatsApp. Telegram founder Pavel Durov said in a blog post on Thursday that the movement was "the largest digital migration in human history." Conservatives and the far-right are a major part of this migration, having been moderated off of other platforms.Telegram has said that it's taking steps to increased moderation to address some extremist content. In the past, they've "generally opted to not do anything about it," as Ali Breland of Mother Jones<a href="https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2021/01/telegram-nazi-ban/"> reported</a>, but Telegram recently said it would crack down on neo-Nazi and white nationalist channels that had participated in "calls for violence." Despite Telegram's claims, it still currently hosts large groups with thousands of people for organizations that have been linked to or perpetrated violence, including the Boogaloo Bois, the Proud Boys, and Stop the Steal. A review of messages in these groups found daily messages with incendiary and violent language that often targets racial or ethnic groups.Of course, the violent tone of many far-right extremists doesn't apply to all Trump supporters headed to Telegram. In a channel called Trump Supporters Channel, which has over 140,000 subscribers, some members still <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/craigsilverman/fbi-no-antifa-capitol-mob">baselessly</a> claim that the insurrection was a <a href="https://www.insider.com/antifa-capitol-riot-protest-false-washington-facial-recognition-found-report-2021-1">"false flag" from antifascists</a> or others pretending to be Trump supporters. In another channel, one member suggested Trump supporters boycott watching TV coverage of Biden's inauguration.In a Telegram group for followers of the Boogaloo Bois movement, the channel's owner actually made fun of Trump for "talking about 'the next administration.'" But many are having trouble agreeing on their next steps following the Capitol riot. While some people say they want to riot again on Inauguration Day, others have suggested different dates, as <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/11/technology/fringe-groups-splinter-online-after-facebook-and-twitter-bans.html">The New York Times' Sheera Frankel reported</a>, which has caused confusion and disagreements.<h2>Banning extremists from mainstream platforms can make tracking their moves difficult</h2><div type="image" title="QAnon protester" height="1119" width="1492" msid="80293053" hostid="261"></div>While some of these more private groups may be harder for people to find, away from the recommendation algorithms on Facebook and YouTube, many have had time to prepare and warn their followers to find them elsewhere."Because platforms are only now taking decisive action, the alt-platforms are allowing an almost seamless transition so conversations and groups are not necessarily disrupted - only moved," Joe Ondrak, a disinformation researcher at Logically, a fact-checking website that uses artificial intelligence to analyze misinformation and disinformation, told Insider in an email.As<a href="https://www.axios.com/the-online-far-right-is-moving-underground-e429d45d-1b30-46e0-82a3-6e240bf44fef.html"> Axios reported</a>, citing Apptopia data, downloads of the app versions of Rumble, MeWe, CloutHub, and Telegram, all of which have become popular for the far-right, each more than doubled in recent weeks. Dipayan Ghosh, a senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School, told Axios that extremists moving to more private or, in some cases, encrypted platforms, is "absolutely concerning." There's also evidence that some extremists are spreading their beliefs through even more private means. Ben Collins of <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/internet/qanon-falsehoods-move-text-message-chains-n1253962">NBC News reported</a> that followers of QAnon had taken their organizing and spread of conspiracy theories to text chains. QAnon, a baseless far-right conspiracy theory alleging Trump is fighting to take down a "deep state" cabal of pedophiles and human traffickers, has thrived through believers spreading anti-mask rhetoric and other medical misinformation related to the pandemic. Since the election, the movement has shifted its efforts to <a href="https://www.insider.com/capitol-riots-qanon-protest-conspiracy-theory-washington-dc-protests-2021-1">focusing on voter-fraud conspiracy theories</a>, which played a huge role in the insurrection. Twitter <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/11/technology/twitter-removes-70000-qanon-accounts.html">announced</a> that it removed more than 70,000 QAnon-linked accounts after the Capitol riot. Research tracking how terrorist groups responded to bans from mainstream platforms might offer some insight into how far-right extremists will fare. <a href="https://twitter.com/AmarAmarasingam/status/1348147867739975681">Amarnath Amarasingam</a>, an associate fellow at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/12/tech/deplatforming-trump-parler-effects/index.html">told CNN</a> that de-platforming ISIS content "protects against" users discovering and becoming radicalized by that content. Removing "violent extremists" from mainstream platforms "will make them harder to be found and, even more importantly, to stumble upon casually," Amarasingam said. Still, this migration poses a challenge for researchers and law enforcement officials trying to track threats of violence. Nick Backovic, a contributing editor at Logically, told Insider that "disinformation researchers already know where the true extremist content lives." But, he warned, "if these platforms grow, it becomes a numbers game because we have far fewer pairs of eyes on these platforms than we do on the bigger ones." Backovic also warned that extremists could find their ways back to mainstream platforms eventually. "If the mainstream social media platforms aren't committed to this deplatforming long term, many of these accounts might eventually just make their way back anyway," he said, "but if they are, it'll change a few things in the way we monitor extremist content."
