Oyo’s booking trends show that from 25th October to 31st October, 2019, people are heading to the land of beaches, Goa, followed by Delhi and Bangalore. The company also said that most Delhiites have booked trips to Amritsar, Jaipur and Lucknow whereas Mumbaikars plan to visit Pune, Mahabaleshwar and Lonavala. People from Bangalore, on the other hand, are planning for Mysore, Ooty, Coorg, Mangalore, Kochi and Puducherry. They are expecting more business from last minute plans as well. “We are expecting the bookings to increase manifold with large traction coming in from last-minute bookings,” said Gaurav Ajmera, Chief Operating Officer, India &amp; South Asia, OYO Hotels &amp; Homes. Another popular platform – Zostel which offers the hostel experience, too has seen a 70% hike in bookings from last Diwali. For the festive season in October, Zostel has received over 14,000 room night bookings with a total expected of 24,000. Zostel saw a 32% increase in inbound foreign travelers, and 27% increase in solo travelers, 42% increase in female travelers along with a 28% increase in solo female travelers. But it’s not just about short getaways, Indians also have long planned international vacations. According to booking platform Cleartrip, Indians have been booking for trips to Thailand, Istanbul, Dubai, Singapore and Malaysia. “Among international travellers, we are seeing an emergence of the quest for new. Thailand bookings that are usually skewed in favour of Bangkok and Pattaya are seeing a shift towards Phuket. Another top emerging destination on the list of international travellers is Istanbul, which has made it among the top 10 destinations this festive season. The emergence of Phuket and Istanbul is also propelled by the new capacity added by Indian LCCs to those destinations,” said Balu Ramchandran, Senior Vice President – Cleartrip.

This year, due to international travel limitations and the alarming rise in the Covid-19 cases, she will spend her <keyword id="188" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali">Diwali</keyword> away from her family and friends in Kolkata. "My friends have a ritual to organise a cards party every Diwali and we spend hours playing games, drinking and chatting. The story of working professionals Bani Singh, 29 and Abir Kapur, also 29, who just tied the knot is similar. Abir works in financial services in Hong Kong and came to Delhi for his wedding, just before Diwali. With Bani still figuring her citizenship situation amid Abir's work commitments, the newly-weds' first Diwali will be on WhatsApp. "It is our first Diwali together and we haven't stopped discussing our virtual plans. Abir created a WhatsApp group in which we post pictures, videos and send voice notes to each other so that we feel connected and together on our first Diwali as a couple," they informed. For 400 million users in India, WhatsApp video calls are the easiest medium to connect to their loved ones in the festive season especially in the social distancing days. Family group video calls are also growing as WhatsApp has doubled the number of participants in a video or voice call from four to eight people at a time on its platform. People on average are spending over 15 billion minutes talking each day on WhatsApp calls. Captain Pankaj Bahukhandi, 57, serves as a Master Mariner for a shipping company. Being away for the latter part of the year, he will not be able to spend Diwali with his family in Dehradun. "Like every other time, we will speak on WhatsApp calls and share pictures, videos and voice notes on our family WhatsApp group so that I feel emotionally connected with my family amid the festivities," he said. "One app that we are the most comfortable using is WhatsApp. It is so easy to make calls and send pictures. We also put WhatsApp status for our grandkids on their birthdays," added Rajdeep Tewari and Sandhya Tewari, grandparents to four children, who are working professionals in different countries in the world.

How whatsApp video calls are connecting Indians this Diwali

Domestic carriers are once again trying to spice up the festive season by offering heavy discounts on airfare. India's low-budget carrier Spicejet announced five-day ‘Diwali Dhamaka’ sale on Tuesday, ranging from all-inclusive fares of Rs 899 to Rs 2,499, for travel starting from November 1, 2014, to December 2015. 
 
The sale would be on till October 26 and would be available for short distance travel between sectors like Bangalore-Chennai-Kochi. While on the Bangalore-Goa sector, a one-way ticket price would start at Rs 1,599 and for the rest of India, the starting fare would be Rs 2,499. 
 Soon after SpiceJet announced a discounted ticket scheme, Mumbai-based <keyword id="6358200" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jet-Airways">Jet Airways</keyword> also launched a similar scheme starting from an all-inclusive fare of Rs 899. On the other hand, <keyword id="6354706" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indigo">Indigo</keyword> announced fares between Rs 1,590 to Rs 4,999 on its domestic network. 
 The October-December period is considered as the peak season for air travel in India and generally witnesses an increase in fares by 10-30% each year. According to travel portal <keyword id="132652" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cleartrip">Cleartrip</keyword>, however, fares this year are about 20% lower as compared to same period last year. 
 
As per an airline executive, pricing has been subdued during the peak season this year due to oversupply, resulting in lower occupancy in flights. 
 
Last week, GoAir, another budget Indian airline, had announced a discounted ticket scheme for travel between October 21 and 30 with fares for flights from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi. The fare started from Rs 2,510. However, travel agents call these flash sales a gimmick. 
 “Post-Diwali period is a low season for airlines. Secondly, domestic carriers are facing cash flow problems so these sales are one way for them to collect money in advance. These sales are similar to the ‘up to 50 per cent discounts’ in malls, not all the clothes will have a 50 per cent discount. Similarly, just the first 10 tickets will be low-priced. Such sales are gimmicks and mislead the public. For travel agents, these sales are an irritation as clients demand such low rates on all the tickets booked during these periods, which cannot work out,” said Karl Dantas, president of <keyword id="2566939" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Enterprising-Travel-Agents-Association">Enterprising Travel Agents Association</keyword>.

Airfare War Starts Again: SpiceJet, Jet Airways & IndiGo Offer Lucrative Discounts This Diwali

The Confederation of All India <keyword id="6371444" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="traders" source="Orion">Traders</keyword> (<keyword id="853920" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cait" source="Orion">CAIT</keyword>) has asked traders to increase their stocks as people are going to buy more in the upcoming <keyword id="188" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="diwali" source="Orion">Diwali</keyword> festival season. Citing a <keyword id="15508" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="yougov" source="Orion">YouGov</keyword> report, CAIT has said that nearly 36 per cent of people living in the urban areas are likely to spend more during the Diwali season. "The expected growth in business among cities will not be restricted to cities alone but traders in small towns and rural areas will also witness growth," it said. CAIT National President B.C.Bhartia and Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said the report of YouGov was based on Diwali spending index, which shows that this year the spending intent stands for 94-45 in comparison to 90.71 in 2021 and 80.96 in 2020 which is also a parameter for recovery of the economy. In the last two years due to Covid pandemic, the consumers faced a financial crisis." The prominent sector, the CAIT, sees growth include home appliances, Travel, Health and Fitness, Home Decor and gold. The CAIT expects that besides these sectors consumer electronics, mobiles, readymade garments, gift articles, FMCG sector, consumer durables, electrical fixtures and fittings, etc., will also see good business. CAIT said the festival season was all set to begin from August 31 to September 9, which will be prominently celebrated in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, etc. whereas the festival of Navratri, Ramlila and <keyword id="6357908" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="durga-puja" source="Orion">Durga Puja</keyword> will begin from September 26 to October 5, and Diwali on October 24. <ul><li>The <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> of <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> has imposed a ban on bursting pollution causing fireworks during <keyword id="188" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali">Diwali</keyword> in the country’s national capital, New Delhi. </li><li>Meanline, the other cities and states in the country have no such restrictions and can go about bursting normal fireworks. </li><li>If people in New Delhi want to burst ‘normal’ fireworks during the festive season, they will have to travel between 140kms to 200kms out of the city. </li></ul>India’s top court has cracked down on fireworks ahead of Diwali, one of India’s biggest Hindu festivals. While the Supreme Court has the banned the manufacturing and sale of all ‘pollution causing’ fireworks in New Delhi in face of deteriorating air quality, other states and cities in Indian can still indulge in normal fireworks. That being said, the Supreme Court has issued an alternative where people in New Delhi and its surrounding areas can still burst <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/explained-what-are-green-crackers-5415113/">‘green fireworks’</a>, but only between the hours of 8PM and 10PM. The court also mentioned that green firecrackers would eventually supersede the other kinds with the increase in their manufacturing from next year onwards. It’s not that other states aren’t considering more strict regulations on the bursting of fireworks during the festive season, but they are still allowed to call on their previous stock of fireworks, green or otherwise <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/delhi/supreme-court-only-green-crackers-to-be-used-in-delhi-ncr-5428096/">according to</a> Justice AK Sikri and Justice Ashok Bhushan. But the ban on the online sale of fireworks through e-commerce portals like Amazon and Flipkart applies across the nation. In order to ensure effective implementation, the Supreme Court has also threatened to drag online retailers to court if they don’t abide by the issued guidelines. The rest of India The issue with the Supreme Court’s directive is that not everyone around India celebrates Diwali at the <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/economy-politics/diwali-crackers-bursting-time-north-south-india-supreme-court/story/286530.html">same time</a>. While northern states celebrate Diwali at night, southern states prefer to celebrate it in the morning. Meanwhile most states in the east celebrate Diwali a before the actual ‘designated’ day of the festival. Meanwhile, in the city of Mumbai, shopkeepers are <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/mumbai/after-supreme-court-order-firecracker-retailers-stare-at-losses-this-diwali-stock-up-other-items-in-mumbai-5428097/">diversifying</a> the products they offer to include more ‘decorative fireworks’ and those approved by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). About <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/national/many-people-now-want-curbs-on-firecrackers-in-their-cities-says-assocham/article9908815.ece">35%</a> of the citizens responded positively towards the ban of polluted firecrackers considering the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/clean-air-week-india-to-deploy-emergency-measures-for-controlling-air-pollution/articleshow/66446663.cms"> worsening air pollution</a> situation. However, a lot of people still believe that the ban will not make much of a difference to the air quality. Majority of people are now gearing up for muted celebrations this Diwali, though the effectiveness is yet to be seen. It is also one of the widely celebrated festivals in India that has turned into the biggest shopping festival. It is also an advertising carnival which brings up an opportunity for brands to reconnect with consumers as the overall market sentiment drastically improves. Brands pour in big monies on television, Out of Home, and digital mediums to reach out to consumers at multiple touchpoints. After a long-dry-spell, brands are making sure that they don’t miss this opportunity to reconnect with consumers and market sentiment has already picked up, as revealed by Axis My India report. Its November net CSI score, calculated by percentage increase minus percentage decrease in sentiment, was recorded at +9, up from +7 last month. It has been rising at a constant pace over the last three months, indicative of a positive shift in consumer consumption metrics. Consumers are also more willing to step out now and shop locally. The report’s mobility net score reflects a constant improvement over the last four months. 88% of families said that they are going out the same or more on getaways/staycations /malls/restaurants, with travel bans being lifted and double vaccination providing easier movement opportunities. The overall mobility score is at -4, which is an improvement over last month at -5. This reflects slow but consistent progress in people’s sentiments for engaging in out-of-home activities. This Diwali, many brands decided to shine a spotlight on heroes who went unnoticed during the most difficult phase of this pandemic. They urged consumers to support different sectors of our society who have been badly impacted by COVID-19 and are struggling to make ends meet. A few of them also reminded consumers to keep aside crackers that harm the environment and celebrate the festival of lights and kindness with their four-legged companions. <ul><li>Emirates — which operates in nine Indian states — introduced 10% <keyword id="8196903" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="diwali-discount-on-flights">Diwali discount on flights</keyword> to the US, Europe and Africa. </li><li>It operates from Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Thiruvananthapuram to upto 150 global destinations. </li><li>The special discount is valid on flights booked from 9 to 14 October for travel between October 14 to August 31, 2020.</li></ul>Dubai-based <keyword id="109528" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Emirates-Airlines">Emirates airlines</keyword> is offering festive discounts to popular destinations the US, Europe and Africa. It is offering a 10% discount on flights to these destinations. Emirates operates in nine Indian states — from Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Thiruvananthapuram to upto 150 global destinations. The discount is available to passengers travelling to Paris, Chicago, Porto and Cape Town via economy class, Los Angeles and Frankfurt in business class and London and New York for first class flights. To avail this discounts, flights should be booked between 9 to 14 October, to travel between October 14 to August 31, 2020. Economy class tickets for flights to Chicago in the US are available at ₹67,648, while business class flights to Frankfurt in Germany starts from ₹150,240. Passengers travelling to New York and London will have to pay at least ₹ 474,972 for first class cabins.

Emirates airline is offering a Diwali discounts to business and first class passengers

The Air Passengers Association of India (<keyword id="312940" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="APAI">APAI</keyword>) has urged the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (<keyword id="6354787" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="DGCA">DGCA</keyword>) not to permit special discount schemes by domestic carriers. 
 
"We strongly believe that the DGCA must put an end to this practice of offering ridiculously low fares which are non-existent and are not really available to the passenger," APAI President D Sidhakara Reddy said. 
 
"We have received several complaints that the passengers do not get access to the airline's portal and if they are able to do so and look for the advertised (special) fare for a particular sector, it shows sold out, whereas most of the other types of fares are only available for bookings," he added. 
 <keyword id="6358032" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="SpiceJet">SpiceJet</keyword> had recently launched '<keyword id="1209613" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Diwali-dhamaka">Diwali Dhamaka</keyword>' sale, with one-way fares starting as low as Rs 899 (including taxes). The tickets could be booked between October 21 and 26 for travel between November 1 and December 15, 2014. 
 
"SpiceJet has fundamentally changed the air travel paradigm in India this year, with offers that are frequent and often lower than train fares," Chief Operating Officer Sanjiv Kapoor said while announcing the sale. 
 
The association asked the DGCA whether the airlines provide information about the percentage of seats offered under special fare schemes as they are required to show the number of seats allocated under each type of fare.

However, that didn’t work for India. When we tried booking tickets on metro route midweek, we found the tickets to be super expensive. 
 
So to make things easier for you, Business Insider consulted with Skyscanner, the meta-search engine of travel. And what we found will greatly help you plan your travel. 
 
For domestic travelers flying in the metro routes or at least originating from a metro, the earlier you book a ticket, the cheaper you get. There is no magic of any particular day of the week in India. For domestic travelers, the biggest saving of 48% can be made gained if you book a flight 51 weeks in advance. 
 
Well, that might sound absurd but to be frank, if you are willing to save money, you need to plan your travel in advance. And those big trips you make with your friends can easily be made a year in advance to save on flights. As per the new rule, all tickets are refundable and so there is no need to panic. If booked 51 weeks in advance, you can dare to choose your travel during the festive seasons as well, when the ticket prices go skyrocketing. 
 Similarly, if you plan your international trip with <keyword id="3637582" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="schenegan">Schenegan</keyword> visa, again the best time to book your flight tickets in a year in advance, as per Skyscanner. If you book a year in advance, you can save up to 62% on average ticket price. 
 
Skyscanner’s annual survey has shown that in India, if you book even 16 weeks in advance you can gain almost 29% on an average. 
 
A word of caution for the people booking on last minute- you generally end up paying 5% above average fare.
