And there are many who are away from home for Diwali celebrating its away from home. That has increased the business for hotel aggregators and travel booking platforms. Oyo’s booking trends show that from 25th October to 31st October, 2019, people are heading to the land of beaches, Goa, followed by Delhi and Bangalore. The company also said that most Delhiites have booked trips to Amritsar, Jaipur and Lucknow whereas Mumbaikars plan to visit Pune, Mahabaleshwar and Lonavala. People from Bangalore, on the other hand, are planning for Mysore, Ooty, Coorg, Mangalore, Kochi and Puducherry. They are expecting more business from last minute plans as well. “We are expecting the bookings to increase manifold with large traction coming in from last-minute bookings,” said Gaurav Ajmera, Chief Operating Officer, India &amp; South Asia, OYO Hotels &amp; Homes. Another popular platform – Zostel which offers the hostel experience, too has seen a 70% hike in bookings from last Diwali. For the festive season in October, Zostel has received over 14,000 room night bookings with a total expected of 24,000. Zostel saw a 32% increase in inbound foreign travelers, and 27% increase in solo travelers, 42% increase in female travelers along with a 28% increase in solo female travelers. But it’s not just about short getaways, Indians also have long planned international vacations. According to booking platform Cleartrip, Indians have been booking for trips to Thailand, Istanbul, Dubai, Singapore and Malaysia. “Among international travellers, we are seeing an emergence of the quest for new. Thailand bookings that are usually skewed in favour of Bangkok and Pattaya are seeing a shift towards Phuket. Another top emerging destination on the list of international travellers is Istanbul, which has made it among the top 10 destinations this festive season. The emergence of Phuket and Istanbul is also propelled by the new capacity added by Indian LCCs to those destinations,” said Balu Ramchandran, Senior Vice President – Cleartrip.

Rain clouds threaten to ruin India's Diwali festivities with rains and thundershowers, according to the latest forecast from India's Meteorological Department. A well-marked Low pressure area has intensified into a Depression and it is located over east central Arabian Sea. A Cyclonic Circulation and a trough extended from this system is located over Odisha and adjoining area. These systems produce moderate to heavy and thunderstorms over Southern and Eastern India with torrential rain over localized places. The Cyclonic Circulation will gradually move northeastward and rainfall area spread over North Eastern India until Saturday, a Weather Channel report said.

Total rainfall of over 100-120 mm in 48 hours is likely over Goa and adjoining area until Saturday. The threat of the rains particularly high along the country's peninsular coast as seen in the image above. "It is very likely to concentrate into a depression during next 24 hours and into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 48 hours," a Met Department official said. There is also a 'yellow alert' forecasting heavy rains in and around Mumbai and Thane. Indians have a clutch of festivities starting from Dhanteras on Friday to Bhaubeej on Tuesday (October 29), with Diwali and Lakshmi Puja in between. The Met Dept has also warned the coutnry's fishermen to not venture out into the sea on Saturday and Sunday.

All you have to do is take the Monday off, as Republic Day falls on Tuesday and behold! You have your four day holidays wherein you can either laze around in bed or go explore! 
 
3. The Shivratri Weekend (5th to 7th March) 
Always wanted to attend the International Yoga Festival, but never could because of work? Well, now you can with this three day weekend! Lose yourself in asanas and relax to the hilt! 
 
4. Holi/Easter Weekend (24th to 27th March) 
Who doesn’t love a three day week? Well everyone! Thanks to Holi and Easter you’ll have your Thursdays and Fridays off. GET SET GO! 
 
5. Gudi Padwa Weekend (8th to 10th April) 
Here’s another extended weekend that’ll increase the difficultly of you believing that you might not get a holiday on a Friday every week. But then again… 
 
6. Ram Navami weekend (14th-17th April) 
Work on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and be rewarded with a weekend that’ll start from Thursday and end on Sunday and will seriously dampen any dreams of you being productive. Uh oh! 
 
7. Independence Day Weekend (13th-15th August) 
Oh man, 2016 will be the year we celebrate Independence Day in the true sense of the word independence- ie with holidays. Also, thanks to it falling on a Monday, we can bid goodbye to those Monday blues, as well! 
 
8. Janmasthami Weekend (25th-28th August) 
We’ll admit there’s a catch. You’ll have to take the Thursday off, but that is a small price to pay for getting the next three days off and a four day weekend, isn’t it? Get your approvals sorted, we say! 
 
9. Ganesh Chaturthi Weekend (3rd-5th September) 
Even Ganpati Bappa thinks you deserve the Saturday-Monday off. Can’t argue with that, can we? 
 
10. Bakri Eid Weekend (10th-12th September) 
We could get used to having Saturday, Sunday and Mondays off. Ah, the happiness! 
 
11. Dussehra/Durga Puja Weekend (8th-12th October) 
There’s no better way to celebrate Durga Puja and Dussehra than with a healthy dose of food and holidays!

<ul><li>Nepa has conducted a quantitative survey to understand how is the audience preparing for <keyword id="36208" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="festive-season">festive season</keyword> this year. It had also done a prelude of changing <keyword id="139079" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Consumer-behaviour">consumer behaviour</keyword> during COVID in the last quarter.</li><li>The new report talks about what consumers are looking at gifting people during the festive season, their travel sentiments and how their overall festive sentiments have been impacted by the Covid situation.</li></ul>Consumer Research and analytics company Nepa did a prelude of changing consumer behaviour during COVID in the last quarter. The report addressed the changing consumer patterns across categories relevant in current times and how consumers are tackling the lockdown on emotional front. The consumer insights firm recently conducted a quantitative survey to understand how is the audience preparing for festive season this year. The OND 2020 is crucial equally for brands &amp; agencies given the festive spends. But the dynamics is so different this year with the pandemic. Are the consumers excited about the key festivals? In the Consumer Narrative report released during early stages of lockdown, Nepa talked about ‘Conscious Shopping’ where consumers were looking at purchases centred around basic necessities of grocery, health &amp; hygiene factors. Over the last 6 months, the paradigm has shifted. As lockdown is easing out and as home quarantine is becoming a new normal, 71% of the consumers are looking forward to buy new clothes for themselves and family. After all the baking and cooking ventures over last few months, close to 70% consumers are keen on gifting the basics in the form of sweets/chocolates/ confectionaries to their loved ones. After a wave of digital normalisation, the latest research by Nepa tells that smartphones became the 3rd clear choice for gifting for close to half of the consumers who participated in the survey, specifically males. Personal care and grooming products are next in line followed by health/immunity boosting products, foods. While females and younger audience in the age group of 18 to 34 is plans to invest in apparel, electronics and health related products, the older audience (35-45) is considering high investment products like Television, furniture for home and home appliances to make the homestay more comfortable. Most importantly, despite COVID there’s almost no one who is not willing to spend on gifts this Diwali &amp; year end. A close to 30% in fact see themselves spending more on gifts this year as compared to last year, 20% would spend at least the same they spent last year, while a half would be conservative with their gifting budgets. However, there are some concerns that are clouding consumers – 43% feel that their usual gift options are not available due to COVID. Close to 1/3rd are speculating that they won’t get discounts from retailers like previous years. 28% worry that home appliances would be costlier this year. Though majority believe in delivery services provided by digital marketplaces across categories and aren’t worried about getting their gifts delivered to their desired locations. “We know that current times have definitely impacted the festive sentiment. But at the same time, it looks like a season to look for a reason too. There is no definite answer on “What will Matter” as we get back given the changes in affinity for categories month on month. But the positivity from <keyword id="412367" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-sentiment">consumer sentiment</keyword> is definitely hinting at a narrative based on optimism. To spend, to celebrate &amp; To continue the festivities with safety at core,” said <keyword id="9379807" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="esha-nagar">Esha Nagar</keyword>, Managing Director Nepa India. “Priorities and Purchase patterns are definitely undergoing a possible lasting transformation with every month. In this situation, a regular mapping of underlying missions behind the reason to purchase is critical,” Nagar further added. As lockdown eases out, consumers are able to go back to their usual choice of brands and products. In most parts, the daily routine has started normalizing, however the yearn for travel is a common theme across. Traveling restrictions are slowly being retracted and most consumers are already planning for excursions at a scale that are acceptable. Though 40% of them would not be travelling at all this festive season, not for a vacation and not even to visit their families. Of those who are planning to travel, 1 in 4 are hoping to get away for weekend trips in locations near their city. 32% plan to visit their families or friends in other city, while 20% resort to only long drives within the city to get a travel window. It is the age group of 25–34 that is most inclined to travel in any capacity they can. On travel optimism, our client partner, <keyword id="1201208" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pratik-Mazumder">Pratik Mazumder</keyword> – CMO, Mahindra Holidays &amp; Resorts India Limited says “Tourism is steadily reviving in India with several states opening up for travellers. As health and safety takes precedence over leisure, people are opting for off-beat, non-congested tourist destinations and stays. We are seeing an increased demand for trends like weekend getaways, staycations and road trips.” He further added,” There is a significant increase in domestic travel and people are holidaying in destinations that are within drivable distances and in the safety of their own vehicles. The focus of hospitality sector on hygiene and safety protocols will only get sharper in the coming years as travel behaviour changes in the post Covid world. People are choosing trusted brands like <keyword id="477996" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Club-Mahindra">Club Mahindra</keyword> as their holiday experience partners. In lieu of this, companies are taking extra care and efforts to ensure contactless services and offer access to good healthcare facilities, wherever possible.” Travel sentiment also is a mixed bag of optimism and caution that we see through our quantitative results and several consumer connects last few months. Consumers are either restricting themselves and family keeping in mind the greater risk of second wave and ever increasing COVID +Ve count or they are stepping out with their belief on the immunity system and precautions they take.

The essay has been edited for length and clarity.I am retired and have lived in the US for about 50 years.My family and I lived on the East Coast for about 23 years, and I have been living in the Bay Area since 1994.I have two boys. My younger son attended Berkeley, and Wharton for his MBA. He likes warm weather, so he's here in Saratoga, California. My oldest son likes the cold. He attended Cornell and received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.When COVID first happened, I had gone through a divorce and was living with my son in Saratoga.<div type="image" title="Andleigh, her son and grandchildren." height="903" width="1204" msid="107562538" hostid="261"></div>In November 2019, I went to India for my nephew's wedding — I am very close with my family there.When it was time to return to the States, all the airport's flights were canceled due to COVID. When I eventually returned to the US, there was no vaccine yet, so my son worked from home, and my grandkids had school classes in the guest room.I realized maybe I needed my own room.My sons and I had heard about Priya Living, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/04/realestate/indian-immigrants-community-living.html">a retirement facility Arun Paul started</a> because he wanted something independent for his Indian parents. My daughter-in-law contacted Rachna Patel at Priya, and they spoke on the phone for almost 40 minutes. I was outgoing, so they determined that I would fit in at the facility.At first, I was skeptical and pushed my son to show me a recording of the facility. I'm glad I did because there was an apartment I liked, which they were nice enough to give to me. I moved in September 2020.<h2>It didn't take long to feel at home</h2>Priya Living is in Santa Clara, driving distance for me to visit my kids.My son lives about 15 minutes away in Saratoga, so I see my grandkids every weekend and on vacations.I have a one-bedroom apartment that has its own kitchen. My rent here is about $3,000 each month.The Bay Area is expensive. All the residents at Priya are here because at least one of our children lives in this area; otherwise, we wouldn't be living here.<div type="image" title="Andleigh (sixth from left) and other residents of Priya Living." height="768" width="1024" msid="107562540" hostid="261"></div>Living at Priya is just like renting a one-bedroom apartment. I buy my own groceries and cook my own food. I don't like to cook every day, so I'll make a couple of curries to last the week.Priya is an older facility, but we have a young man here who's kind of a jack of all trades. If a screw comes off or a toilet is not working, he fixes it. He's also here half a day to help people who don't drive, and once a week he takes them to a grocery store.There is no prep time to get assimilated here, you need maybe two days to get to know everyone. You just become friends so quickly, learn the culture, and the dos and don'ts — saying thank you and minding the fire laws.A lot of us may be from different parts of India, but culturally we're not that diverse. It's wonderful to be a part of a similar age group and be able to talk to people without any inhibitions.<h2>I feel independent and sociable</h2>I have lived in the Bay Area since 1994, so I have a car and my old friend circle in Saratoga. At the facility, people say I'm never around because I like to meet up with my friends.The social aspect is really nice. You know how housewives and mothers are, most of us have served our families our entire lives. I'm staying alone now, and it's nice not to be guided by any routine.I try to go for a walk for 45 minutes every day, or I sit in the courtyard. I like the fresh air. In the evening, I watch "Jeopardy!", read or write. Right now I'm reading Barbra Streisand's autobiography.<div type="image" title="Deepa Andleigh at Priya Living" height="1200" width="1600" msid="107562542" hostid="261"></div>On Wednesdays, my friends and I at the facility have chai tea and bring snacks — It's like social law. People at Priya also celebrate Christmas, Diwali, or birthdays. When that happens, we typically have food catered.From time to time, we will also have singers come and perform for us. We have performers who come to do pageants, as well as our grandkids when they are on vacation.I hear there were a lot more activities here before I moved in, but with COVID, everything naturally got restricted. I thought growing old would take longer, but it's happening faster than expected.<h2>People should be open-minded about retirement homes</h2>People who don't believe in retirement homes have to realize that their children have their own lives.Some people might think that since I live so close to my son and don't live with his family, we don't have good relations. Staying together in a joint family was the Indian tradition, but it's not always practical. Kids have their own lives. It's not that they ignore us — they just have their own priorities.A lot of the residents here at Priya know that their kids will be there for them whenever they're needed. We prioritize our health to ensure they can enjoy a normal life. Still, if I ever need my sons, I know they will be here in a jiffy.
