The Pune-based company had reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,719 crore in the year-ago period. Total income increased to Rs 11,207 crore for the second quarter of the current fiscal from Rs 10,537 crore a year ago, Bajaj Auto said in a regulatory filing. Bajaj Auto said its revenue from operations registered a new high of Rs 10,777 crore, up 6% year-on-year (YoY). In terms of volume, Bajaj said it sold a total of 10,53,953 units in the quarter under review, down 8% from 11,51,012 units in the year-ago period. Two-wheeler sales in the domestic market were down 19% to 5,05,320 units in Q2 as compared to 6,21,134 units in the year-ago period, while exports were at 3,76,263 units as against 3,97,900 units last year, down 5%. Total three-wheeler sales were at 1,72,370 units in the quarter under review as against 1,31,978 units in the corresponding period a year ago, up 31%. In the domestic market, the company said it clocked its highest-ever quarterly sales at 1,32,236 units as against 73,241 units last year, registering an increase of 81%. Addressing reporters in a virtual earnings call, Bajaj Auto Executive Director Rakesh Sharma said the company has been able to deliver "record breaking" performance in the midst of difficult international trading conditions. He said the drop in volumes of two-wheelers was due to the high base effect of the corresponding period last fiscal. Led by strong performance in the 125cc and above motorcycle segment, Sharma said Bajaj Auto has been able to increase its market share, which, along with better product mix, resulted in better revenue realisation. The domestic business registered a new peak, on the back of six successive quarters of double-digit growth, he added. On the company's electric two-wheeler brand <keyword id="409918" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="chetak" source="Orion">Chetak</keyword>, Sharma said after sorting out supply chain issues since March-April this year, Bajaj Auto has been able to increase its market share in the electric two-wheeler segment to 11% in Q2, up from 3% in FY23. The portfolio of the brand would also be expanded, he said, adding that the sales network of Chetak is present in 120 cities as against 90 in the previous quarter. Asked about the penetration of electric two-wheelers, he said it is at around 5% of the overall two-wheeler industry and in the September quarter, it has been "stuck" at monthly sales of about 65,000 units due to increase in prices after the reduction in FAME II subsidy. It has led to consolidation with the top-five players commanding 75% of the market as compared to 50% earlier and the bottom players have been weakened and severely hit. Sharma said one needs to wait and see how electric two-wheelers will grow in future as it will depend on the continuation or changes in the FAME scheme. Commenting on the performance of premium bike <keyword id="52525" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="triumph" source="Orion">Triumph</keyword>, he said it has been received extremely well in the market with the model clocking 8,000 units in the first one and half months of deliveries since August. Bajaj Auto will increase monthly production of the model to 10,000 units by the fourth quarter of FY24, up from 7,000 units currently. The company is also planning to start exports of Triumph bikes in the third quarter, while work on taking the brand experience to over 100 cities by the year end is on track from 26 currently, he added. Asked about the company's new launches, Sharma said there will be six upgrades and new launches in the 125 cc and above segment in the next four to five months starting after Diwali. On exports, he said a slow and steady recovery is expected considering the current global geopolitical situation and the difficulties in the financial system. Bajaj Auto said it sustained strong cash generation by adding over Rs 3,600 crore of free cash flow in the first half of the current fiscal. Shares of the company ended marginally up at 5,143.80 apiece on the BSE on Wednesday.

This year's festive sale in India expected to reach Rs 7.9 billion, a 3X growth over 2020: Report

Sales across vehicles showed a 28.8% growth for the period, as compared to the same last year – beating the pandemic as well as pre-pandemic blues that have been dogging the sector since 2019. “Festive’22 brings cheers to the auto industry, as for the first time customers of every category came out in good numbers and took part in festive purchases thus making it the best in last four years. As anticipated earlier, PV segment saw the best year in a decade by outgrowing 2020 numbers by 2%,” said Manish Raj Singhania, president, FADA. Singhania said that overall retail sales were up 6% when compared to pre-Covid festive of 2019. The Confederation of All India <keyword id="6371444" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="traders" source="Orion">Traders</keyword> (<keyword id="853920" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cait" source="Orion">CAIT</keyword>) has asked traders to increase their stocks as people are going to buy more in the upcoming <keyword id="188" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="diwali" source="Orion">Diwali</keyword> festival season. Citing a <keyword id="15508" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="yougov" source="Orion">YouGov</keyword> report, CAIT has said that nearly 36 per cent of people living in the urban areas are likely to spend more during the Diwali season. "The expected growth in business among cities will not be restricted to cities alone but traders in small towns and rural areas will also witness growth," it said. CAIT National President B.C.Bhartia and Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said the report of YouGov was based on Diwali spending index, which shows that this year the spending intent stands for 94-45 in comparison to 90.71 in 2021 and 80.96 in 2020 which is also a parameter for recovery of the economy. In the last two years due to Covid pandemic, the consumers faced a financial crisis." The prominent sector, the CAIT, sees growth include home appliances, Travel, Health and Fitness, Home Decor and gold. The CAIT expects that besides these sectors consumer electronics, mobiles, readymade garments, gift articles, FMCG sector, consumer durables, electrical fixtures and fittings, etc., will also see good business. A new 5 pound coin to commemorate the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled by Chancellor Rishi Sunak to mark the Hindu festival of Diwali. Available in a range of standards, including gold and silver, the special collectors' coin was designed by Heena Glover and features an image of a lotus, India's national flower, alongside one of Gandhi's most famous quotes -- "My life is my message". Building on the enduring relationship and cultural connections between the UK and India, it is the first time that Gandhi has been commemorated on an official UK coin with the final design chosen by Sunak, who is the Master of the Mint. "This coin is a fitting tribute to an influential leader who inspired millions of people around the world," he said. "As a practicing Hindu, I am proud to unveil this coin during Diwali. Mahatma Gandhi was instrumental in the movement for Indian independence and it is fantastic to have a UK coin commemorating his remarkable life for the first time." The coin, which goes on sale, is part of the Royal Mint's wider Diwali collection, which includes 1g and 5g gold bars in henna-style packaging, and the UK's first gold bar depicting Lakshmi -- the Hindu Goddess of wealth. The 20g gold Lakshmi bar was designed in partnership with the Hindu community in South Wales, where the Royal Mint is based. The Mint will join the celebrations at the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Cardiff, where worshippers will offer prayers to goddess Lakshmi and lord Ganesha for the coming year. Chief Customer Officer for The Royal Mint, Nicola Howell, said: "As we approach Diwali celebrations, we are delighted to unveil the first official UK coin commemorating the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. The beautiful design builds on the enduring relationship and cultural connections between the UK and India." The announcement comes as India is celebrating its 75th year of Independence this year. Last year, the Chancellor commissioned the new "Diversity Built Britain" 50p coin following discussion with the 'We Too Built Britain' campaign, which works for fair representation of minority communities' contributions across all walks of life. With the #JoyofHomecoming campaign, which features the veteran actor Kanwaljit Singh, we aim to remind everyone that the festival of lights is fondly celebrated, when the entire family gets together. The campaign encapsulates the role of smartphone photography in rekindling the joy of connection, and aims to bridge the emotional and physical distances between families and spread happiness. India is a collectivist society and all of us are deeply emotionally connected with our families and loved ones. We understand the importance of capturing those perfect moments with the help of photography and how it can be used to stimulate emotions. Delivering industry-leading camera technology, we want our consumers to enjoy this festival with their loved ones and capture every moment and emotion. According to <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/india-smartphone-market-q2-2021/">Counterpoint Research</a>, India’s smartphone shipments grew 82% YoY to reach over 33 million units in Q2 2021, and vivo captured a 15% share of the overall market. According to the latest report by Counterpoint, nearly $7.6 billion worth of smartphones is likely to be sold during the ongoing festive season in India. Hence, we are looking forward to the festive season. Despite the ongoing situation, we have managed to maintain steady growth in the Indian smartphone market. Our V-Series models (the V20 and V21 series) have performed exceptionally well, and since our entry in the premium segment with the X50 series last year followed by the launch of the X60 series early this year, our market share has become 3x in the above 30k segment. The growth numbers clearly indicate the consumers are out there, looking for feature-rich smartphones. As we are nearing the festive season, we have introduced the all new X70 Series Co-Engineered with ZEISS and the response so far has been tremendous.
