Football icon Lionel Messi is global brand ambassador for Byju’s ‘Education for all’ social initiative

This move, the company said, is a way to avoid redundancies in job roles and the layoffs constitute 5% of its workforce. “These measures will help us achieve profitability in the defined time frame of March 2023," said Mrinal Mohit, CEO, BYJU'S India business. As per the audited FY21 financials that it released last month after an 18-month delay, its losses widened by 20 times to ₹4,589 crore. In the last three years, the company has been on an acquisition spree. Its biggest one so far is that of offline test preparatory services provider Aakash for $1 billion in 2021. The payments to PE major Blackstone, which owned 38% in Aakash, were eventually <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/business/byjus-clears-230-million-dues-to-blackstone-for-aakash-acquisition/article65931486.ece">cleared by the company, albeit after delays</a>. It has also purchased Singapore-based <keyword id="6559242" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="great-learning" source="Orion">Great Learning</keyword> for $600 million in 2021. Both these entities will function independently, <keyword id="3320944" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="byjus" source="Orion">Byjus</keyword> had said. Edtechs in trouble This year, many edtech companies have been suffering from loss of clientele after offline classes have commenced and screen fatigue. Since July this year, many edtech companies like Unacademy and Vedantu have been laying off <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/60000-jobs-in-startup-companies-may-lose-their-jobs-this-year-in-india-experts-say/amp_articleshow/91804572.cms">employees</a>. Byju’s which has by then also made its presence felt in offline coaching, is also known to have gone down the same path. As per reports, <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/byju-s-owned-whitehat-jr-lays-off-300-employees-in-latest-round-of-job-cuts-122062900323_1.html">WhiteHat Jr, owned by Byju's</a>, laid off around 300 employees in June from the code-teaching and sales teams. However, various <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/business/byjus-lays-off-over-2500-employees-in-toppr-and-whitehat-jr-to-cut-costs-5463853.html">media reports have pegged the layoff </a>number between 1,500-2,500. The company vehemently denied the numbers, but did admit to retrenchments. “To recalibrate our business priorities and accelerate our long-term growth, we are optimizing our teams across our group companies. This entire exercise involves less than 500 employees from across Byju's group companies,” the company spokesperson said after denying the 2,500 layoff number. In good shape says management The edtech giant, which is valued at around $22 billion and is the first edtech unicorn in India has also been under scrutiny for various reasons. The company management however insists that it is in good shape. <keyword id="5563078" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="divya-gokulnath" source="Orion">Divya Gokulnath</keyword>, the company’s co-founder also came out in defense of the company saying that a lot has happened since its FY21 results and its widened losses have already been cut by half in FY22. “It’s easy to forget that we are 18 months post FY21, and that BYJU’S has grown more than 4 times in this span,” she wrote in an open letter on LinkedIn. For this year, the company has set a target to achieve $2 billion in revenues. The company founder has stated time <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/byju-s-focusing-on-profitable-growth-2-bn-revenue-within-the-sights-ceo-122092001266_1.html">and again that this</a> “revenue within sight”. They happen to sit in classrooms and on the swings in the playground. It’s our children who decide what our future will be like and this makes people who impart their learning, their teachers, absolutely “essential and critical”. While the world had its lens focussed on the pandemic, the last few months have been challenging for <keyword id="6355445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="education">education</keyword> as well. According to UNESCO, the routines of roughly a billion learners were disrupted due to pandemic closures. With the virus spreading at unprecedented rates, the future of learning stood at a crossroads. However, human ingenuity came quickly to the rescue; and we collectively realised that to prevent negative long-term effects of this disruption in education, we had to implement technology. And implement technology we did! Almost overnight teachers across the globe successfully transitioned to online, tech-enabled classrooms. What might have otherwise been a herculean task was executed to perfection by dedicated, driven teachers. The satisfaction of teaching students and seeing them achieve success is like none other, and with <keyword id="23248" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-learning">online learning</keyword>, teachers are now positively impacting a much larger set of students. With the impact of teaching finally getting its due, India is poised to make teachers for the world in what I believe will be a return to the Golden Age of Teaching. As a country with a large, aspirational youth now is the time we can create high quality and high paying jobs in a profession that has remained under appreciated for far too long. The pandemic teaching report card Learning to teach using technology is not a simple task. Doing it overnight is even more commendable. Traditionally teachers have always been comfortable with direct classroom interaction. But to be able to teach comprehensively without the student in front of you is a whole new ball game. Teachers have picked this up beautifully with little to no formal training and are doing some incredible work out there. Despite their own hurdles and challenges, they are relentlessly helping students everywhere learn better to the best of their capabilities. In addition, over the last few months teachers have also adapted to their changing role as mentors and communicators as they help their students navigate this pandemic through a virtual medium. With rapid up-skilling teachers have proven once again that their grit and dedication for work is unparalleled. Technology as an enabler for teachers A teacher will always be crucial to the effective learning process of any student, whether it is in a physical classroom or an online learning environment. In fact, in an online set-up, while the essence of teaching remains intact, the teacher is empowered to create more engaging and interactive learning experiences for students. I strongly believe that using visuals, animated videos and game-based quizzes, has made me a better teacher. By giving students a front-row seat to their own learning in the online format, teachers can fulfil their roles of mentors and guides much more effectively. However, to make this incorporation of technology truly successful, skill development for teachers in the use of technology is a primary and immediate need. Online learning rides on the troika of world-class content, engagement and personalization. To stay in sync, teachers will need the necessary training to leverage technology to its full potential. I believe strong leadership in school systems that can help identify and fast-track this upskilling will play a crucial role too. Implementing technology doesn’t only help the teaching community educate effectively, but it also gives them the opportunity to be better mentors to their students. Teachers have already proved that nothing can stop them from imparting knowledge, let’s give them the right tools through technology and help them do their jobs even better! The future of teaching Over the past few months, there has been a significant mindset shift with parents and students whole-heartedly embracing online learning. According to our own research, 75% of parents want their children to continue learning online even after school closures end. However, post the pandemic it is most likely that a blended learning approach, with both offline and online methods, will emerge as the winner. To meet the demands of this evolving format, the role of the teacher will go much beyond textbook “teaching”. Teachers build the citizens of tomorrow in the classrooms of today. To help them equip their students for a digital world we need to first equip our teachers with the right technology. With the right support, a spirit to experiment and an open mind, I believe we can help teachers step into the Golden Age of Teaching with their best foot forward. The disruptions led by the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns compelled both parents and educational institutions to implement tech-enabled learning solutions, thereby accelerating the growth of the EdTech sector. <ul><li>India is the second biggest market for LinkedIn, which Microsoft bought over in 2016 for $26.2 billion.</li><li>The number of users has gone up by 25% in the last 18 months at a time when unemployment in the country rose.</li><li>LinkedIn is also looking to beef up its team in India as it starts rolling out more products that are born in Bengaluru but get adopted in other countries.</li></ul>LinkedIn now has 62 million users in India⁠— nearly 10% of its total member base globally come from the subcontinent as the world’s largest professional networking platform completes 10 years in the country. It took the company, now owned by Microsoft, 3 years to go from 30 million in 2015 to 50 million in June 2018 but in the last 18 months, the number of users has gone up about 25%. Thrilled but composed, Ashutosh Gupta, who was elevated as the country head for LinkedIn India, explained to Business Insider what led to this rise in people getting on board. “We tend to send, the first few updates on your feed will be very job focussed. So that you get what you want and you are more engaged. Another dimension is, the brand campaign that we did called #InItTogether.  Even the demography of the members on the platform, as put out by napoleoncat.com, reflects the spike in job seekers in India. Nearly 90% of the members are under the age of 34, compared to Facebook where the age group of 18 to 34 makes up for about 70% of the user base. India is also the fastest-growing market for LinkedIn. Therefore, it has become more important for the American corporation than ever before. <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/98189/linkedin-events-overview?lang=en" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">LinkedIn Events</a>, which was born out of India, is the other product born out of the India unit. The feature allows members to organise an event where other members can be invited for a face-to-face interaction. A bit like <a href="https://www.meetup.com/" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Meetup</a>. “The R&amp;D team in Bengaluru has global mandates too,” Gupta said.
