JioStar announces plans starting at ₹15 – here’s everything you need to know

New Delhi, Walt <keyword id="19899232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="disney" source="keywords">Disney</keyword> CEO <keyword id="20023956" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bob-iger" source="keywords">Bob Iger</keyword> has said a joint venture with <keyword id="19936674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance" source="keywords">Reliance</keyword> Industries after merging its <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> business would benefit the company in terms of profit and also "derisk" its business in the Indian market. The merger deal will create a big entity and help it to stay in the market at a "significant level", said Iger at a Morgan Stanley investor conference earlier this week. "We had an opportunity to align with Reliance, which is obviously the company that has done very well there and one that we respect. And in doing so, end up owning part of a bigger media company. And we believe that, that not only should benefit us in terms of the bottom-line, but derisk us as well there," he said. Last month, Walt Disney Co. and Reliance Industries announced signing of binding pacts to merge their media operations in India. Under the deal, Reliance and its affiliates will hold 63.16 per cent and Disney will have 36.84 per cent in the JV, which will create India's leading media company that will house two streaming services and around 120 television channels. "We wanted to stay in India. We made a big investment in India when we purchased the assets of 21st Century Fox. We are one of the biggest media companies in India. But even though it is the most populous country in the world, we felt we want to be there because of that, we also know that there are challenges in that market," he said. Iger said, the merger will create a big entity and help it to stay in the market at a "significant level". "So, it's kind of the best of both worlds. We stay in the market at a significant level. We have a very good partner in Reliance, and we get to have a chance of growing a business and lowering the risk of doing so," he added. The transaction values the joint venture at Rs 70,352 crore (USD 8.5 billion) on a post-money basis, excluding synergies. Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance has also agreed to invest at closing Rs 11,500 crore into the joint venture to give it the muscle to fight rivals such as Japan's Sony, and Netflix. Its OTT platform Disney + Hotstar has seen its paid subscriber base decline from around 55 million to 40 million in the first quarter of FY24 because of Reliance's <keyword id="19985346" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-cinema" source="keywords">Jio Cinema</keyword> winning exclusive rights for live sports. The combined entity will have the largest OTT subscriber base. Disney + Hotstar was launched in India in 2020, post the acquisition of the entertainment assets of 21st Century Fox at a valuation of USD 71.3 billion, thereby taking over the operations of Star India and Hotstar. It housed entertainment and cinema channels such as StarPlus and StarGold as well as sports channels like Star Sports. While Disney + Hotstar rapidly increased its subscriber base initially with the streaming rights of cricket matches (IPL, World Cup), it lost the bid for the digital streaming rights in 2023-27 cycle, which was won by Reliance-backed Viacom18 for USD 720 billion, 12.92 per cent higher than what Star India had paid on an average per match value. Media ventures of Reliance are currently housed in Network 18, which owns TV18 news channels as well as a plethora of entertainment (under the 'Colors' brand) and sports channels. Merger with Reliance would boost company's profits and reduce risk in India: Disney CEO Bob Iger

Disney+Hotstar has added 8.3 million subscribers in the company's third fiscal quarter that ended on July 2, reaching 58.4 mn subscribers in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> and Southeast Asia. The <keyword id="149163" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="walt-disney-company" source="Orion">Walt Disney Company</keyword> also updated subscriber guidance for Disney+ Hotstar, to up to 80 million subscribers by the end of its fiscal 2024. "We intend to refine this target over time as subscriber visibility in India will be clearer once the ICC and BCCI cricket rights sales processes are completed," said <keyword id="2460760" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bob-chapek" source="Orion">Bob Chapek</keyword>, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. "As you may know, we recently made the disciplined decision to not proceed with the Indian Premier League digital rights, and we'll evaluate these rights with that same discipline," he said during the company's earnings call with analysts late on Wednesday. Disney+Hotstar had 44.9 million paid users in the same period last year in the country. "We are excited to continue offering IPL to our linear customers in India where growth potential exists for our portfolio of more than 70 channels that reaches 90 per cent of pay cable and satellite TV homes in the region," said <keyword id="13491997" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="chapek" source="Orion">Chapek</keyword>. "Pay TV distribution in India continues to be a robust business with projected GDP growth expected to drive advertising and consumer spending," he added. Chapek said that India is one of the only markets in which "we are launching new linear channels". "Finally, given the results of our recently completed upfront, it is clear that our unmatched portfolio continues to be highly sought after by advertisers," he informed. Overall, Disney+ subscriptions went up to 152.1 million for its third fiscal quarter that ended on July 2, and the streaming giant added 14.4 million new subscribers in the April-June period. The company lowered its 2024 forecast for Disney+ between 215 million-245 million subscribers. It had previously set subscriber guidance at 230 million-260 million by the end of fiscal 2024. "With 14.4 million Disney+ subscribers added in the fiscalAthird quarter, we now have 221 million total subscriptions across our streaming offerings," said Chapek. The company said that international Disney+ subscribers increased by 6 million to reach 49.2 million. Disney also announced to raise the price of the ad-free Disney+ subscription to $10.99 per month, starting December 8, in the US. The price change will coincide with the launch of the streaming service's upcoming ad-supported plan which will be priced at $7.99 per month. Comcast chief Brian Roberts has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/hulu-disney-comcast-deal-scenario-analysts-1235633154/">said</a> he thinks it's worth much more today.Per a predetermined process to arrive at an exact price for Hulu, both companies have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/10/12/comcast-disney-hire-morgan-stanley-jpmorgan-to-value-hulu.html">hired investment banks</a> to come up with valuations. If their final valuations are within 10% of each other, the average of the two will be the price Hulu is valued at. Disney would then pay Comcast 33% of that value for its stake. If the banks' valuations are too far apart, a third bank would come in to decide on a fair valuation.Among the challenges with coming up with a value for Hulu is that it has to take into account all the benefits it brings to Disney by being bundled with its sibling streamers like Disney+ and Hulu + Live TV, which in turn helps Disney's ABC network and cable networks, LightShed Partners wrote in a November 2 note. The valuation also has to take into account that Hulu contains an entire Disney basic cable network, FX on Hulu. No pure-play streamer has ever been sold, so there's also no precedent to point to.LightShed suggested $35 billion was a good starting point for Hulu's valuation. "Given the delay of the season, we have made the decision to briefly pause the roll-out of Disney+ and will announce a new revised premiere date for the service soon," he added. Robert Iger, then chairman and CEO of Disney, had given March 29 as the official launch date of Disney+ in India. As per earlier reports, the Disney+ Hotstar is currently available at no additional charge to existing Hotstar subscribers -- who pay Rs 999 for a year and the premium tier carries a new yearly sticker price of Rs 3,588. Shows like The Mandalorian, Marvel's Hero Project and The Imagineering Story: Limited Series are currently available. The list also includes Diary of a Future President, Disney Family Sundays, Encore, Forky Asks a Question, and High School Musical: The Musical. TechCrunch reported in November that the company was planning to launch its streaming service in India by the second half of the year, followed by its entry in Southeast Asian markets. In terms of downloads, Disney+'s second month garnered 13.5 million, or 33 per cent, of the 40.9 million installs it's seen since launch. Meanwhile, Hotstar, at its peak, reported more than 100 million daily active users and 300 million monthly active users last year. According to media reports, in an effort to prevent the further spread of the novel coronavirus, both Netflix and Disney have halted production on certain projects.

<keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> on Tuesday announced its <keyword id="14193636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups-accelerator-programme" source="Orion">startups accelerator programme</keyword> that will nurture about 20 startups led by women founders in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. The programme is aimed to help women founders address challenges that are unique to their experience, including fundraising, hiring and many others. The inaugural batch of Google for <keyword id="8826137" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups-Accelerator" source="Orion">Startups Accelerator</keyword> - India Women Founders programme will accept up to 20 women-founded/ co-founded startups in India, including startups at the minimum viable product stage, and support them through a three-month programme. The programme will place special focus on areas like access to networks, access to capital, hiring challenges, mentorship and many others which, for a variety of social reasons and low representation, prove challenging for female founders. In addition to these, the curriculum will include workshops and support around AI/ML, Cloud, UX, android, web, product strategy and growth, as well as provide access to a global community of women founders. India is the world's third largest startup capital, trailing only the US and China. It boasts over a 100 unicorns with 22 getting added to the list just in 2022, spanning verticals such as e-commerce, healthtech, fintech and many others. However, only 15 per cent of these <keyword id="3357129" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-unicorns" source="Orion">Indian unicorns</keyword> have one or more women founders. "The new programme is part of a larger effort by Google towards improving the representation of women across different sections of India's digitally-trained workforce, be it entrepreneurship, professionals looking to upskill or young graduates seeking a head start on their career, with the ultimate objective of making technology universally relevant and helpful," the tech giant wrote in a blogpost. The applications for the programme are open till July 10, it added. Google to launch accelerator programme for women entrepreneurs in India
