It was a Sicilian Kann, an opening that does not find many favours in the elite chess circles, wherein Praggnanandhaa got an advantage through better space control right from the beginning. The middle game saw Magnus' king stuck in the centre and the Indian super-talent capitalised with some deft manoeuvres after the minor pieces were off the board. Eventually, the King's vulnerability came to question as Praggnanandhaa posed some dangerous checkmate threats. The game lasted just 37 moves. Caruana outclassed Liren out of an Italian opening game. Launching the offensive on the king side the American, who had lost the first two rounds under Armageddon, he sacrificed two minor pieces for a rook to rip apart black's King side and another exchange sacrifice soon sealed the game in his favour. In the other game of the day, Nakamura proved superior as white against Alireza in the USD 1,60,000 prize money event. In the women's section, Vaishali ensured that her lead remained intact after a draw in Armageddon as black against Muzychuk. Seven rounds still remain in both sections of the event. Norway chess: Praggnanandhaa claims maiden classical win over Carlsen, takes sole lead

After the two-game classical series ended 1-1, the 18-year-old Indian prodigy outlasted the highly-rated American GM in a battle of wits in a nerve-wracking tie-breaker. In the final beginning on Tuesday, Praggnanandhaa will take on five-times title winner Carlsen, who beat Azerbaijan's Nijat Abasov 1.5-0.5 in his semifinal. Praggnanandhaa becomes the third youngest player after the legendary Bobby Fischer and Carlsen to qualify for the Candidates tournament. "I didn't expect to play Magnus in this tournament at all because the only way I could play him was in the final, and I didn't expect to be in the final. I will just try to give my best and see how it goes!," he said after booking a spot in the summit clash. "It feels really good to qualify for the Candidates; I really wanted to fix this spot." With the two 25'+10" games ending at 1-all, Praggnanandhaa prevailed in the first 10'+10" game against Caruana to get within a draw of setting up a final clash with world No.1 Carlsen. It will be the climax of a big 2018, with the race to take on Magnus beginning in March with the Candidates Tournament.For American chess fans, there will once again be a chance to root for the first US World Champ since Bobby Fischer. Fabiano Carunana, two-years younger than Carlsen and now the second-ranked player in the world, narrowly missed winning the previous Candidates, while Wesley So, a year younger than Caruana, has come on strong in the past few years and is currently world number six, residing just out side the 2800-rated club, at 2792 (both Carlsen and Caruana are rated above 2800).Carlsen's play since his WCC win in 2016 has been up-and-down. He came back on form mid-2017, but at the London Chess Classic in December he had a mediocre performance. Caruana, meanwhile, won that event, capping a recovery that pulled his world ranking back from a low of number five.<h2>Both the Candidates and the World Chess Championship itself can be tough to handicap</h2>Younger Carlsen challengers failed to overcome the Candidates challenge as Viswanathan Anand, a six-time WCC under the current incarnation of the title, took on Carlsen twice, losing both times.The first bout, in 2013, saw Carlsen as the contender and Candidates winner and Anand as the champ, while the rematch found Anand as an unlikely Candidates victor; many had expected the Armenian Grandmaster Levon Aronian to rival Carlsen.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Alina L'AmiAmerican Fabiano Caruana could be a contender.</div></div></div>Karjakin was also an unexpected challenger in 2016, although he played Carlsen to standstill in their 12-game classic battle before the match went to extra innings and Carlsen triumphed. Karjakin is now outside the world's top ten, but as the 2016 challenger, he's automatically included in the Candidates field.In 2018, a lot of chess-savvy folks will be keeping an eye on Ding Liren, a Chinese GM ranked nine in the world who is leading a charge of new players from his country. As a finalist in last year's Chess World Cup (he lost to Aronian, who will also be at the Candidates), Ding will China's first shot at a WCC, if he can win the Candidates in Berlin.<h2>The WCC is never without controversy</h2>A somewhat controversial wildcard at the Candidates is 42-year-old Vladimir Kramnik, the 2000 World Champ and the choice of the WCC's organizers. Kramnik is a top-ten player, ranked number seven and rated 2787. This could open doors for Ding or even Shahriyar Mammadyarov, a 32-year-old Azerbaijani GM who blasted back into the top ten in 2017 and is now the number-three ranked player - and the only other member of the 2800 club.If I were a betting man, I'd say that Aronian and Caruana have the best shots at meeting Carlsen across the board in November in London. That's because both GMs have been close to winning the Candidates in the past, and that counts for more than just something. Caruana, in fact, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fabiano-caruana-sinquefield-cup-2017-8">told me in an interview last year</a> that he's learned to pace himself better after essentially running out of gas in 2016.Aronian is 35 and in the middle phase of his career, but he won Norway Chess in 2017 in convincing fashion, in the process capturing victories over Carlsen, Kramnik, and Karjakin at a tournament that was also packed with other Candidates contenders.The coming year could be a breakout once for big-time chess. Carlsen has cemented himself as the champ to beat, but the third cycle of the Candidates process since he won his first WCC suggests a consistent cadre of young challengers could be primed to take him on for the next decade. His 2016 WCC was no walk in the park, either, so Magnus will need to play at a high level. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Getty Images for AgonPlay on.</div></div></div>NEW YORK - Chess is a game of strategy, and reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen was nothing if not strategic in Game 12 of his match against Russia's Sergey Karjakin on Monday.With the score tied at 5.5-5.5, the title-holder from Norway, with white, invited Karjakin to play the Berlin Defense, and the challenger obliged.The Berlin yet again lived up to its drawish reputation, and after a mere 30 moves and roughly 45 minutes of play, the men shook hands.The match will now go to tiebreakers, 25-minutes "rapid" games, beginning Wednesday at 2 PM ET. There will be four of those. If there's still no winner, the 2016 World Chess Championship goes to five-minutes blitz games.Carlsen is not only the world's number-one ranked player in classic chess - he's also number one in rapid and second only to China's Ding Liren in blitz, according the the most recent FIDE rankings. Like any top Grandmaster, Karjakin is no slouch at either rapid or blitz, but Carlsen is, on paper, a lot better.So it's abundantly clear why Carlsen decided to avoid pushing for a decisive result. He has white, he could push for an advantage, but the opening is a tough one to crack open, and if he makes an error, he blows his title. He likes his chances in rapid and blitz against the conservative Karjakin, who hasn't made a lot of mistakes in standard chess during the championship.But still! You're the World Champion! You have white! It's the final standard game of the World Chess Championship! Time for some fireworks, right?Sadly, no.Fans were hoping for more, but honestly, a thrilling Game 12 was probably too much to hope for. Besides, both Carlsen and Karjakin are 25 years old (Carlsen turns 26 this week) and are are children of the computer age. Their play is deeply informed by powerful "analysis engines," computer programs that have taught them to ruthlessly evaluate positions and maintain equality. Carlsen isn't completely beholden to this "new age" of elite chess. He sometimes appears indifferent to opening theory and would rather outplay his opponents in long games where a small advantage can be nurtured, or when the pressure yields late-game errors.But Karjakin is a slightly scary combination of risk-averse player and skilled calculator. Over and over again in the championship, he's found the right move, mirroring computer evaluations. In a weird way, the matchup has been both perfect - and perfectly boring. Karjakin's refusal to self-destruct has set Carlsen up for the marathons he wants. But Carlsen hasn't been able to provoke the ruinous inaccuracies from Karjakin that's he's needed. And so: ten draws and only a single win for each player. A lot of fans, not to mention plenty of GMs and chess commenters who don't want to see the World Champion turn into a dreary slog, are depressed by this. A solution might be longer standard match schedules, 20 or more games rather than 12, to encourage players to go for wins knowing that they'll be able to recover from losses. But that would mean a major commitment of time from players and fans - and there's no guarantee that the result of such a match wouldn't be 10-10.Anyway, we can now root for some flashier rapid games.Not much to say about Game 12, in which the pieces and queens were exchanged, leaving rooks, bishops, centralized kings, and symmetrical pawns on the board.
