<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/48330983.cms" style="width: 800px; height: 600px;" /> Satyakam Mohanty, <keyword id="6366201" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Louis-Berger">Louis Berger</keyword> group's former vice president, was arrested on Monday for paying off Goa politicians and officials to secure implantation rights for a Rs.1,031 crore water and sewerage management project in 2010, while he was serving as the head of the international consultancy firm in India, a police official told IANS. 

	"He was arrested today (Monday) under the anti-corruption law," the official said.
 

	Mohanty's statement has also been recorded in the presence of a magistrate.
 Top officials of Louis Berger have already pleaded guilty to a New Jersey District Court to offering bribes of $3.9 million to secure contracts in countries such as India, Vietnam, Indonesia and <keyword id="6387116" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kuwait">Kuwait</keyword>. 

	While the settlement announced by the US Justice Department did not identify the politicians and officials who were offered bribes, documents revealed that $976,630 was paid in bribes during 2009-2010 to a Goa minister and other officials.
 

	Louis Berger was part of a consortium that eventually won a contract to execute a multi-billion dollar water and sewerage project funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
 Congress legislator <keyword id="54051" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Digambar-Kamat">Digambar Kamat</keyword>, who was chief minister in 2010 has already been questioned, along with former Public Works Department minister <keyword id="69673" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Churchill-Alemao">Churchill Alemao</keyword>, who served in the Kamat cabinet at the time. Mohanty is the second person arrested in connection with the scam. Last week, JICA project director <keyword id="2966483" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anand-Wachasundar">Anand Wachasundar</keyword> was arrested in the bribery case.

Panaji, Mar 18 () The opposition parties from Goa on Thursday met Governor B S Koshyari and the state election commissioner demanding that the upcoming budget session of the state Assembly be curtailed due to the election code of conduct. The delegation was led by Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat with Goa Forward Party president Vijai Sardesai, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party MLA Sudin Dhavalikar, Independent MLA Prasad Gaonkar and NCP Goa unit president Jose Philip D'Souza. During the interaction with the governor, the opposition leaders pointed out that holding a longer budget session when the code of conduct for municipal polls is on will amount to its violation, Sardesai said. "The opposition parties demanded that the budget session be curtailed. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant can pass the Budget and postpone the session until after the code of conduct is over," he said. Oppn leaders meet guv seeking to curtail Goa budget session

Panaji, Jul 3 () In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, the upcoming monsoon session of the Goa legislative Assembly will be curtailed to a day instead of two weeks as scheduled earlier, a senior official said on Friday. The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Speaker Rajesh Patnekar with all party leaders at Porvorim, the official said. Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat, who participated in the meeting, told that it was unanimously decided to curtail the session to just a day to avoid the possible spread of coronavirus. Earlier, Governor Satya Pal Malik had summoned a two- week long session from July 27 onwards. At least 1,500 people, including policemen and legislature staff, are on duty during these sessions, Kamat said. The Leader of Opposition said that the Business Advisory Committee would meet soon to decide about the agenda for the session. On Thursday, Patnekar had urged all MLAs to get themselves tested for coronavirus infection ahead of the session, while the state legislature department also advised the MLAs not to hold any meetings amid the pandemic. COVID-19: Goa to curtail monsoon Assembly session to one day

Panaji, Jun 13 () After a few personnel from Goa's dedicated COVID-19 hospital tested positive for the infection, the state government on Saturday decided to conduct random testing at slums near the facility in Margao town. State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said people living in slum areas around ESI Hospital in Margao will be tested for coronavirus. Earlier this week, a few members of the hospital staff had tested positive for the deadly infection. "In view of cases detected at ESI quarters, I have directed the health secretary to test all employees there," he said. Apart from this, random testing will be conducted in the slums of Azad Nagar and Moti Dongar, which are located near the hospital, Rane said. Leader of opposition Digambar Kamat, who is also Margao MLA, had requested for tests to be conducted, he added. As on Friday, Goa has recorded 463 cases of COVID-19, of which 69 patients have recovered so far. The state government has declared Mangor Hill in Vasco town of South Goa and Ghodemal in Sattari taluka of North Goa as containment zones. RPS ARU ARU

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the state cabinet, Sawant also said that one in every 15 persons in Goa had already been tested, as part of the state's efforts to maximise testing to identify and treat coronavirus patients. "Several states in the country have allowed home isolation for asymptomatic COVID-19 patients. We have also decided to do the same. Any person willing to be home quarantined, should seek permission from the local Deputy Collector's office," Sawant told reporters. The Chief Minister also said that those who had homes which facilitated isolation or families who had collectively tested positive would be given permission for home quarantine. The decision comes at a time when videos of mismanagement and chaos at state government-run Covid care centres have gone viral attracting criticism from the Opposition. Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat had also written to the Governor Satya Pal Malik criticising the government for poor treatment at these centres. Sawant said, that the government had delayed the decision to permit home quarantine of asymptomatic patients, for fear of criticism of his administration. "People would have been ready to criticise the decision, saying now positive patients are now being asked to stay home (and not admitted to government facilities)," Sawant said. The Chief Minister also said that so far 1.11 lakh persons had been tested in Goa, which has a population of nearly 1.5 million, which effectively means that one in 15 persons had been tested in the state. Sawant also said that the state government had not taken any decision related to resumption of schools for the current academic year.
