	Didi's investment in Bangalore-headquartered Ola comes close on the heels of it picking up stakes in San Francisco-based Lyft and Malaysia's GrabTaxi, signalling a global alliance against the cashrich Uber.
<br /><br /> People close to the development told TOI that Ola, formerly Olacabs, is finalizing the second tranche of $200 million of its $500 million financing round led by GIC, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, Didi Kuaidi, and <keyword id="2649768" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Baillie-Gifford">Baillie Gifford</keyword>, a Scottish investment firm which is a shareholder in Flipkart, valuing the Indian cab-hailing app at $5 billion. <br /><br />

	GIC, which put in a small amount when Ola scored $400 million led by DST Global earlier this year, is expected to pump as much as $100 million this time around while Didi mayinvest around $30 million. Russian billionaire Yuri Milner's DST Global is also likely to participate in the latest round, sources said. TOI had reported first, in its August 10 edition, about New York-based hedge fund FalconEdge, Softbank Corp and Tiger Global putting the first chunk of $300 million into Ola. Separate email queries sent by TOI regarding the financing round to Bhavish Aggarwal, co-founder &amp; CEO of Ola, Didi Kuaidi and GIC did not elicit a response till the time of going to press. A spokesperson for Baillie Gifford said, "I am afraid that on this occasion we will not be able to offer any comment."

	"There's a lot of interest in this round and it may even get oversubscribed. As of now it's likely to close at $500 million.Things are still to be worked out fully," said a person privy to the matter. Even as Ola builds a bigger war chest, there has been talk of the Travis Ka lanick-led Uber looking to raise $1billion for India separately, just like it racked up $1.2 billion for China recently , two markets which are of enormous significance for the company . Uber, the most-valued tech startup worldwide at $51billion, also became the youngest privately-held company to cross the $50 billion valuation mark, beating Facebook's record in July this year.
<br /><br /> Despite being buffeted by regulatory hurdles, both Ola and Uber have been aggressively rolling out new services, discounting, announcing millions in investments along with introducing driver initiatives as competition to corner market share intensifies in Asia's third largest economy which has seen smartpho ne usage grow exponentially .The five-year-old Ola, which came to life in Mumbai, presently leads the domestic taxi app market and claims to be doing as many as 750,000 rides a day while Uber, while announcing its $1 billion investment plan for India, said that it aims to touch 1million rides over the next 9 months from the present 200,000. Ola's pole position got cemented earlier this year when it acquired its smaller rival TaxiForSure . A month before Ola acqui red TFS in India, China's largest taxi-hailing app <keyword id="2677023" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Didi-Dache">Didi Dache</keyword> merged with its closest competitor Kuaidi Dache, backed by internet conglomerate Tencent Holdings and in vestors like Alibaba, SoftBank and Tiger Global, to form a $6-billion transportation powerhouse. Didi Kuaidi is valued at $16 billion and is Uber's biggest competitor worldwide, having raised $4.4 billion in investor money. In total, Didi Kuaidi has amassed a $4 billion war chest of venture capital funding. </p><p><span>Didi Kuaidi was created in February when competing apps Didi Dache and Kuaidi Dache merged to cut the costs of competing with each other - and more importantly, with Uber.</span></p><p dir="ltr">The ride-sharing and ride-hailing arms race in China is only heating up with Uber's biggest rival in the country making an investment in Uber's biggest US rival. </p><p dir="ltr">Previously, Didi Kuaidi invested in GrabTaxi, a Singapore-based ride-hailing service, which closed a $350 million round of funding in August.</p><p>Uber's China branch <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-rival-didi-kuaidi-just-raised-3-billion-2015-9">recently closed a $1.2 billion round of funding</a>. Uber is aggressively expanding its Chinese footprint, with plans to operate in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-uber-to-enter-100-new-chinese-cities-in-next-12-months-ceo-2015-9">100 more cities in the country in the next year.</a></p><p>Lyft, on the other hand, has chosen to focus on its operations in the US instead of expanding internationally. Didi Kuaidi says it gives 3 million rides a day in the country across 80 cities. </p><p>In addition to its taxi service, Didi Kuaidi seems to be taking some tips from companies like Uber and Lyft by expanding its offerings. It launched Hitch, a carpooling service, this summer. To date, the company says Hitch is available in 338 cities, with 3.1 million drivers and 7 million users.</p><p>Didi Kuaidi also launched premium bus services in two cities, Beijing and Shenzhen - not unlike Uber's idea of "smart routes" and "perpetual trips." In this scenario, a driver, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/johanabhuiyan/uber-is-laying-the-groundwork-for-perpetual-rides-in-san-fra#.frYVNRnla">said at the Digital-Life-Design conference last fall</a>, "<span></span>picks one passenger up, picks another passenger up, drops off the first passenger, but then picks up passenger number three and drops off passenger number two." Think of it like a smart, premium bus system.</p><p>It makes sense for Didi Kuaidi to seek so much new funding.<span> Uber China's top three most popular cities - Guangzhou, Hangzhou, and Chengdu - are all in China. Uber's top Chinese rival just raised $3 billion

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Lyft</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Didi Kuaidi, Uber's biggest competitor in China, is teaming up with Lyft - Uber's biggest US competitor - to take on Uber.</p><p>The Wall Street Journal broke the news minutes before the two companies were to hold a press conference together in New York to make the announcement.</p><p><a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/uber-rivals-form-international-alliance-1442429031">According to the Journal,</a> Lyft and Didi are in talks to expand their alliance with other Asian ride-hailing companies - India's Ola and Singapore's GrabTaxi.</p><p>Lyft CEO Logan Green said during the companies' press conference that the partnership will go into effect early<span> next year.</span></p><p>In addition to announcing the alliance, the two companies have confirmed earlier reports that Didi Kuaidi invested in Lyft's recent round of funding earlier this year, joining Asian investors Rakuten, Alibaba, and Tencent. Specifically, Didi Kuaidi invested $100 million in Lyft's Series E round.</p><p>You'll be able to pay in your native currency on each app, so as to avoid having to pay for your Didi ride or your Lyft ride in a foreign currency, depending on where you live. Uber has said that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-china-users-pay-with-alipay-outside-of-china-2016-5">it's willing to lose $1 billion per year in China to compete</a>.</p><p>In an interview with Reuters, Apple CEO Tim Cook positioned this investment as a way to grow its presence in China.</p><p>"We are making the investment for a number of strategic reasons, including a chance to learn more about certain segments of the China market," <a href="http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN0Y404W">Cook told Reuters</a>.</p><p>Didi Chuxing was attempting to raise funding at a valuation of $25 billion USD, the <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/chinas-homegrown-rival-to-uber-valued-at-over-25-billion-1460017727?shareToken=st61cbd7eab6a64157af694cdd0c12c491">Wall Street Journal reported</a> in April.</p><p>It has partnered up with services like Lyft, Uber's biggest domestic rival, to form <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-didi-ola-grab-anti-uber-alliance-launches-2016-4">a global "Anti-Uber Alliance."</a></p><p>With this round, Apple joins the ranks of Didi <span>Chuxing (<span>formerly Didi Kuaidi),</span></span> investors, including Tencent and Alibaba, trying to stem off Uber's rapid global growth. </p><p>Uber has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-china-users-pay-with-alipay-outside-of-china-2016-5">taken the threat of <span>Didi </span></a><span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-china-users-pay-with-alipay-outside-of-china-2016-5">Chuxing</a> seriously. Uber CEO Travis Kalanick has committed to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ubers-ceo-calls-losing-1-billion-a-year-in-china-sustainable-2016-3">losing $1 billion a year in China</a> if that's what it takes to compete.</span></p><p>For Apple's part, this might hint at the Cupertino-based companies long-rumored plans to get into the automotive business: Uber is investing heavily in self-driving car technology, and this investment might be a way for Apple to head it off at the pass.</p><p>Still, Cook is downplaying Apple's car ambitions, for now. Apple is investing $1 billion in Uber's biggest rival in China

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Simon Song</span></p><p class="caption">Taxi-hailing app Didi Chuxing (formerly Didi Kuaidi) controls around 90 per cent of the Chinese market.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> war has become increasingly brutal in China, with Uber playing catch up since its launch in 2013.</p><p>The San Francisco-based taxi-hailing company is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-uber-says-it-losing-1-billion-a-year-to-compete-in-china-2016-2?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=referral">burning $1 billion</a> to compete against its number one rival <span>Didi Chuxing (formerly Didi Kuaidi)</span>. </p><p><span>To put that value into perspective, $1 billion is approximately how much Uber earned per year in its <a href="http://in.reuters.com/article/uber-china-idINKCN0WR0PA">top 30 cities around the world</a>. </span></p><p><span>Didi, heavily armed with financing from local tech giants like Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Tencent Holdings Ltd., is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ubers-main-competitor-in-china-is-losing-buckets-of-money-2015-9">dominating the market</a>. <span>Didi Chuxing raised about <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-05-06/uber-china-rival-said-close-to-raising-2-billion-in-new-funding">$2 billion</a> in its latest round of funding, Bloomberg News reported.</span></span></p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-invests-1-billion-in-didi-chuxing-2016-5">Apple also jumped in</a>, pumping $1 billion into Didi recently. Apple CEO <a href="http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN0Y404W">Tim Cook told Reuters</a> that this investment is a way to boost the company's presence in China.</p><p><span>Both Uber and Didi are</span><span> </span><span>putting up a costly fight in a bid to attract more drivers to sign up through subsidies and to attract more passengers through cash back deals. </span>But it's more than just a money game.</p><p><span>Unlike Uber, which focuses on private-car rides in China, Didi allows users to be picked up by taxi, private car, shared car, shuttle van or bus.</span></p><p><span>The average employee in Beijing travels 15 km to work, which takes about 44 minutes at an average speed of 20 kmh, according to a research report by HSBC. "There is a significant transport vacuum across China as the experience on local buses, subways or taxis is generally poor," Herald van der Linde wrote in that report.</span></p><p><span>Didi is casting a wider net both in terms of geographic coverage and commuting options, and it's working out so far. The company said it handles<span> more than 11 million rides a day. Meanwhile, Uber <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-china-growth-2015-6">logged only 1 million daily rides</a> in China in 2015.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Here's Linde:</span></span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span>Importantly, the large taxi apps don't receive any transaction fee from the taxi drivers. This improves acceptance among taxi drivers. But for a private car hire, a 3% transaction fee is charged and it is this that generates revenue for most of these apps. </span><br /></span></p><p><span>To be sure, offering taxi-like services in private cars isn't new, but this is less disruptive in China than in some other cities, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-protests-in-paris-2016-1">such as Paris</a>. The government is also more tolerant of taxi disrupters regardless of their local or foreign roots, according to Linde.</span></p><p><span>Uber CEO <a href="http://in.reuters.com/article/uber-china-idINKCN0WR0PA">Travis Kalanick</a> said the startup has not faced major regulatory challenges in China so far, though the transport minister is getting fidgety about unfair competition from subsidies by ride-hailing companies.</span></p><p>One bright spot is the development of autonomous driving features and their incorporation into the taxi-hailing app's fleet. Linde noted in the HSBC report:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">In the future, car-pooling may be a new option, with people sharing journeys to the shops or offices. Another growth driver is the establishment of self-driving cars. Here's why Uber is losing the game in China

Wanda, China's largest commercial <keyword id="6354553" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="real-estate">real estate</keyword> developer, announced investment worth $10 billion in Haryana. <keyword id="64310" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SAIC">SAIC</keyword> Motor, China's largest carmaker, proposed to buy GM's Gujarat facility. About 100 small and medium Chinese enterprises have promised investments worth $1 billion. <br /><br /> The Chinese incursion has been the best news so far for the start-ups as a major part of these Chinese investments flowed in this sector last year. From Alibaba’s investment in <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> to Didi Kuaidi’s investment in <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>, Chinese companies are fast recognising the potential of this sector. The year kickstarted with China's online travel company Ctrip picking up a strategic stake in Makemytrip and Baidu starting discussions with internet startups. This comes after Alibaba's high profile investments in Snapdeal and Paytm last year. Another Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings, also entered the field with investments on Bangalore-based healthcare startup <keyword id="1165142" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Practo">Practo</keyword> last year. <br /><br /> They are also targeting large cap stocks. State Administration of <keyword id="6368276" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Foreign-exchange">Foreign Exchange</keyword> (SAFE), a fully-owned subsidiary of People's Bank of China recently invested in some of India's pedigree large cap stocks. <br /><br />

	These investments point towards the country’s growing affiliation towards its neighbour. So much so that many Indian companies are eyeing Chinese investments to top their US investments. Is this a start towards a better future of the bittersweet relation these two countries share!

The Chinese invasion of India Inc<b></b>

<p class="sub_buzz_desc"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Uber is increasingly ubiquitous around the world. Now, the ride-hailing giant - <a href="https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/uber">backed by $5.9 billion in venture capital funding</a>  - operates in 55 countries and 200 cities around the world.</p><p class="sub_buzz_desc">But there's still one area of the world Uber needs to work on before it can truly achieve international status.</p><p class="sub_buzz_desc">Last December, Uber raised a massive <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-just-raised-12-billion-2014-12">$1.2 billion</a> round of funding. It was intended to allow Uber to "make significant investments, particularly in the Asia Pacific region."</p><p class="sub_buzz_desc">Earlier this year, <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/johanabhuiyan/global-taxi-alliance#.fegJBaZmq">BuzzFeed News reported</a><span> that Softbank Capital, which has funded on-demand ride-hailing startups GrabTaxi and OlaCabs, was behind a global alliance to take on Uber.  </span></p><p class="sub_buzz_desc"><span>Since then, two other huge Asian taxi-hailing companies - </span><span>Kuaidi Dache, which is funded by Alibaba, and Didi Dache, funded by Tencent - have </span><span>merged, consolidating the power of Asia-based car-hailing companies. </span></p><p class="sub_buzz_desc"><span>And though Uber operates in a number of Asian markets, including Beijing, Bangkok, and Tokyo, Uber has faced other legal hurdles in Asia. </span></p><p class="sub_buzz_desc"><span>South Korea </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/south-korea-charges-uber-ceo-travis-kalanick-2015-3">has charged Uber CEO Travis Kalanick with operating an "illegal" taxi service,</a><span> and has </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/south-korea-charges-uber-ceo-travis-kalanick-2015-3">vowed to shut down Uber's operations in the country</a><span>. </span><span>As TechCrunch notes, "Korean law doesn't allow technology companies to store payment data as part of their purchase workflow, but instead requires consumers to retype their information with every purchase, ostensibly for security reasons."</span></p><p class="sub_buzz_desc">Earlier this month, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-offices-in-guangzhou-china-raided-by-police-2015-5">Uber's China offices were raided by police</a> in what was described as a crackdown on ride hailing apps. China's taxi market is largely state-owned, and <a href="http://www.ibtimes.com/chinese-authorities-raid-uber-office-guangzhou-amid-crackdown-ride-booking-apps-1904413">the International Business Times reports</a> some Chinese citizens have been angered by taxi drivers opting to switch over to apps like Uber, because it makes it more difficult to simply hail a cab on the street.</p><p class="sub_buzz_desc">But it's not just the Asia Pacific area that Uber needs to worry about. It's India, too.</p><p class="sub_buzz_desc">OlaCabs, an Uber rival native to India, <a href="http://graphics.wsj.com/billion-dollar-club/?co=Ola%20Cabs">has a $2.5 billion valuation</a> and the trust of the Indian people, another obstacle Uber has to overcome in its international expansion. <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-31052849">Allegations of an Uber driver raping a female passenger</a> in India in 2014 have led some Indians to be wary of Uber's services and have <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/bw/articles/2014-12-09/ubers-problems-in-india-wont-go-away-any-time-soon">prompted protests against Uber's services</a> across the country.</p><p class="sub_buzz_desc"><span>Uber has already worked to address these issues, though. Uber has customized its Indian experience, <a href="http://blog.uber.com/SOSAlert">adding an in-app panic button option</a> that alerts police to your location, as well as introducing <a href="http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/04/09/398563088/uber-launches-cash-only-rickshaw-service-in-indian-capital">rickshaws and cash payment options</a> for its Indian customers. <br /></span></p><p class="sub_buzz_desc"><span>Uber certainly already has a leg up on its US rivals: Lyft, perhaps its closest competitor, hasn't even expanded outside the States yet. The one part of the world Uber has yet to conquer

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Uber is <a href="https://www.uber.com/jobs/58927">hiring a product manager</a> to build its recruiting platform - "a series of products and systems that will help Uber attract the best talent in the world."</p><p>In its latest job posting, Uber says it wants to add "tens of thousands" more employees in the next few years.</p><p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">By itself, this isn't news. But it's significant that Uber is scaling so rapidly, and could be a sign of things to come for the ride-hailing company. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">(Also, it should be noted that "employees" refers to people who work for the company itself - drivers, which <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2015/01/22/now-we-know-many-drivers-uber-has-and-how-much-money-theyre-making%E2%80%8B/">numbered 162,037 in December</a> and have presumably grown since then, don't count).</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Uber </span><a href="https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/uber">has raised $5.9 billion</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> in venture capital funding to date, valuing the company at more than $40 billion.</span></p><p>And the company doesn't seem to be done raising money yet, either: a report last week says Uber is <a href="http://www.wsj.com/article_email/uber-plans-large-new-funding-round-1431137142-lMyQjAxMTA1NzA0ODkwODgwWj">looking to raise an additional $1.5 billion to $2 billion more</a>, which would make Uber the most highly valued private tech company of all time, at over $50 billion.</p><p>Right now, Uber offers its ride-hailing service in 55 countries and more than 200 cities globally. But ride-hailing isn't the full extent of what Uber can offer. Last week, Uber <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/08/business/uber-joins-the-bidding-for-here-nokias-digital-mapping-service.html">submitted a bid to buy Nokia's mapping product, Here.</a> The move would be yet another divorce from its investor Google for the company, since right now Uber relies on Google Maps technology for its mapping.</p><p>Buying Here would allow the company to have its own mapping software and data, which would help Uber's central driving business, but also its other logistics- related endeavors including UberFresh, its food delivery service, and UberPool, its carpooling service.  In the past, Uber has offered other logistics solutions in select markets, like UberRush, a courier service, and <a href="http://blog.uber.com/essentials">UberESSENTIALS</a>, a service that delivers anything you could possibly imagine getting from a corner store or pharmacy.<br><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"></span></br></p><p><span>But Uber needs more employees if it wants to scale beyond ride-sharing and enter the logistics and delivery marketplace.
