The National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29, the birth anniversary of hockey wizard Dhyan Chand. "The sports awards function this year is likely to be an online function. As per the Government of India instructions, the awardees will also be announced on the morning of the day of the function," a Sports Ministry source told . The pandemic had in June forced the ministry to extend the deadline for submission of online applications for the awards. It also allowed athletes to self-nominate in view of the "difficulties" being faced by them in finding people who can recommend their names amid the lockdown. The self nomination has resulted in a huge number of applicants for the awards and it has been learnt that the ministry had already finished the initial round of screening. The National Sports Awards include the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award and the Dhyan Chand Award, which are conferred every year by the President of India at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 29. On the first day of the meeting on Monday, 13 and 15 candidates were recommended for the Dronacharya and Dhayan Chand Award respectively. Ignored last year, shooting legend Jaspal Rana on Monday found his name among the 13 coaches recommended for this year's Dronacharya award by the sports ministry's selection committee. New Delhi, Jul 15 () Distinguished footballer and Dhyan Chand Awardee Syed Shahid Hakim has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently undergoing treatment at a quarantine centre in Hyderabad. The 81-year-old Hakim, who was a part of India's 1960 Rome Olympic squad, confirmed the development on Wednesday. "Yes, I have tested positive for COVID-19 six days back and I am currently at a hotel in Hyderabad which has been converted into a quarantine centre by the state government," Hakim told . "I can sense improvement in my health in the last two days and hoping that I will test negative soon and go back home in the coming few days," he added. Hakim said he fell ill after visiting Gulbarga in Karnataka. "I was having fever after visiting Gulbarga and I was taking medicine for fever. Later, I had an x-ray of my chest done and I was told that I had pneumonia. "Later, I was advised to undergo test for COVID-19 and the result returned positive. It was six days back." Hakim was conferred with the Dhyan Chand Award for Life Time Achievement in 2017 after former Indian player Shabbir Ali won it in 2011. After his football career, Hakim took to refereeing and officiated in international matches till 1989, including the 1988 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar. He later took up coaching, following the footsteps of his illustrious father and India's greatest ever football coach Syed Abdul Rahim. The ministry generally invites the nominations for the awards in April while the ceremony to confer them is held on August 29 on the occasion of National Sports Day celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. But this year, the process is yet to start because of the pandemic, which has so far led to death of more than 800 people in the country and over 2 lakh globally. The official said the delay was inevitable considering the present circumstances. "The ministry is yet to issue the circular for National Sports Award applications. Generally, the process should have been completed by the month of April but this year the situation is unprecedented," the official said. "But hopefully the circular will be issued in May." The COVID-19 pandemic has brought all sporting activities to a standstill not just in the country but across the world. "Since the last one month all the offices in the country, including government establishments and those of NSFs (National Sports Federations), have been running from home, so the delay was bound to happen," he said. The National Sports Awards include Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyanchand which were conferred every year by the President of India at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. While the city is usually in a bad state as far as air quality is concerned, it’s usually at such hazardous levels during the Diwali festival in the country. In fact, AQI in Delhi during the monsoon season is usually better, compared to the rest of the year. The safe limit for PM10 concentration is considered to be 100 ug per cubic meter, while readings above 400 ug per cubic meter are considered dangerous. Many areas in Delhi have recorded air quality index readings as high as 999 over the past few days. As per real-time AQI updates, pollution in places near Sukhdev college, Paschim Vihar, ITI (Industrial Training Institute) Jahangirpuri have reached these alarming levels. Other places that fall into the same category are Anand Vihar, PGDAV College and Areas near Major Dhyan Chand stadium.
