The Dhoom series is one of the few successful franchisee series of <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword>, and is certainly one of the few films that excite pretty much every section of the society. While men watch it for the mean machines and action sequences, the women have their fair share of dreamy heroes flaunting their toned bodies. 
 
Ever since the first Dhoom movie came out in 2004, all the subsequent movies have been better than the previous ones, minting crores at the box office and giving everyone a reason to look forward to the next one. 
 
However, if rumors are to be believed, we can safely say that the next movie in the series is going to be the biggest, and we have not one but two reasons to think so. 
Returning to the Dhoom series is actor <keyword id="6354563" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hrithik-Roshan">Hrithik Roshan</keyword>, who also did Dhoom 2 in 2006, which went on to become the highest-grossing film of that year. However, what excites us more than the return of the Greek God is the debut of the millennium star <keyword id="6357912" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="amitabh-bachchan">Amitabh Bachchan</keyword> in the Dhoom series. 
 
Yes you read it right! 
 While his son <keyword id="499" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="abhishek-bachchan">Abhishek Bachchan</keyword> has been a constant part of the Dhoom team in all these years, this will be the first time that senior Bachchan would be a part of the series. 
 
We sure are excited to know if Big B would be on the good side or the bad, but telling you a secret wish, we really think that he would kill it as a baddie, and the climax when he would be facing his real-life son is already our favorite sequence from the movie. 
 
Though no official announcement has been made, we can’t wait for this news to be confirmed.

Dhoom 4 will be the biggest in the series, courtesy the new addition!

It was released, it was watched and it delivered some frenzied results. That is good enough for many, especially those who judge a film’s merit by <keyword id="1839596" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office-collections">box office collections</keyword>. Not that we have got anything against <keyword id="1987992" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Big-moolah">big moolah</keyword> – the kind of money this <keyword id="1987996" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Third-instalment">third instalment</keyword> of the Dhoom series has earned till Day 4, both in India and abroad. 
 Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and produced by <keyword id="6385240" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aditya-Chopra">Aditya Chopra</keyword>, the high voltage <keyword id="6355304" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="action">action</keyword> thriller (starring <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword>, <keyword id="499" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="abhishek-bachchan">Abhishek Bachchan</keyword>, <keyword id="6354850" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Katrina-Kaif">Katrina Kaif</keyword> and <keyword id="36115" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="uday-chopra">Uday Chopra</keyword>) has sailed into the <keyword id="925977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rs-100-crore-club">Rs 100 crore club</keyword> just after the opening weekend and grossed around Rs 107 crore at home, according to industry estimates. That’s definitely better than Hrithik Roshan-Priyanka Chopra starrer <keyword id="500441" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Krrish-3">Krrish 3</keyword>, which could enter the coveted club after 4 days. Total collections during the first weekend stood at Rs 170 crore-plus, with nearly Rs 63 crore from <keyword id="116674" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="overseas-markets">overseas markets</keyword>. And that’s a record for any <keyword id="679" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="bollywood-movie">Bollywood movie</keyword>. Now it is only a matter of time before it surpasses the lifetime grossing of Krrish 3 (Rs 270 crore) or <keyword id="227940" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chennai-Express">Chennai Express</keyword> (Rs 409 crore). 
 
<keyword id="24705" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dhoom-3">Dhoom 3</keyword> has also raced past the <keyword id="1988004" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Opening-day-record">opening day record</keyword> of Chennai Express, a <keyword id="1988005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shah-Rukh-Khan-Deepika-Padukone-starrer">Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer</keyword> that bagged around Rs 33.12 crore on the first day. In contrast, Aamir’s flick has collected a little more than Rs 36 crore. Its performance is equally impressive after Day 4 (December 23, 2013) and the movie has grossed an estimated total of Rs 127 crore in the <keyword id="6382118" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Market">domestic market</keyword>. 
 In <keyword id="6378080" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="North-America">North America</keyword>, too, Dhoom 3 has debuted to a record-breaking opening weekend, collecting Rs 21.26 crore nett ($3.4 million) across 236 theatres – the biggest opening of all time for a <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> movie. In contrast, Chennai Express collected Rs 14.82 crore ($2.4 million) from 196 screens in America and <keyword id="6356687" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="canada">Canada</keyword> in its opening weekend. So Dhoom 3 has beaten its both records in <keyword id="1988011" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Screen-count">screen count</keyword> and collection. 
 
It has an impressive performance in other overseas markets as well. The movie has collected Rs 9.18 crore nett (£906,875) from 97 screens (fewer number of screens than Chennai Express) in the UK and Rs 3.85 crore nett (A$695,782) from 30 screens in <keyword id="6355478" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Australia">Australia</keyword> in the first weekend. While Dhoom 3 has collected Rs 1.11 crore nett (NZ$ 217,923) from 19 screens in <keyword id="22501" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="New-Zealand">New Zealand</keyword> and Rs 3.9 crore nett in <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> the first weekend, Chennai Express gathered Rs 60.05 lakh (NZ$1,23,478) from 10 screens in NZ and Rs 1.84 crore in Pakistan for that span. 
 
There is yet another record associated with Dhoom 3. It has reportedly grabbed the <keyword id="1988018" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Biggest-number-of-screens">biggest number of screens</keyword> this time – around 4,500 in India and 750 screens overseas. The previous record was held by Chennai Express (3,700 screens at home and 700 screens abroad). 
 If all these numbers have numbed you a bit, let’s look at the storyline for a change. One can easily see it’s loaded with populist fare – <keyword id="24462" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="bikes">bikes</keyword>, <keyword id="28817" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="babes">babes</keyword> (who can forget Katrina’s high-flying <keyword id="729495" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Acrobatics">acrobatics</keyword> and tantalising <keyword id="16156" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="dances">dances</keyword>), exotic <keyword id="6542811" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="locations">locations</keyword>, great action and fascinating <keyword id="2902" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Stunts">stunts</keyword>. To top it all, there’s the muscle-flexing Aamir playing <keyword id="1841797" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sahir">Sahir</keyword> the baddie and looting <keyword id="6354604" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chicago">Chicago</keyword> banks without leaving any clue except a smiling clown face and a Hindi message (with help from Katrina or <keyword id="260889" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aaliya">Aaliya</keyword>, of course) while no-nonsense cop ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek) and his bumbling sidekick <keyword id="208896" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ali-Akbar">Ali Akbar</keyword> (Uday Chopra) are back in action to <keyword id="1988025" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Catch-a-thief">catch a thief</keyword>. 
 We are also impressed by the superb <keyword id="42054" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cinematography">cinematography</keyword> and great technical specs, but in spite of the <keyword id="3909943" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="star-power">star power</keyword> and the <keyword id="1988030" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sleek-treatment">sleek treatment</keyword>, this movie is painfully <keyword id="794224" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="predictable">predictable</keyword> and incredibly <keyword id="1311050" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="unimaginative">unimaginative</keyword>. One actually misses the subtle fun and the intriguing crime-tracking mechanisms of <keyword id="3894" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dhoom-2">Dhoom 2</keyword> here but then, this is the age-old Bollywood wine of betrayal-revenge-retribution, served in a <keyword id="99968" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="new-avatar">new avatar</keyword>. As Aparna Mudi of Zee News says – Dhoom 3 manages to deliver a typically <keyword id="1988026" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood-revenge-saga">Bollywood revenge saga</keyword> in a modern way. 
 
Sarita A Tanwar of Daily News and Analysis gives it 4 stars and says, “Welcome to the world of jaw-dropping action and stunts never seen before on Hindi screen. Dhoom 3 redefines the word ‘<keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword>’ in the grandest way possible.” 
 
That is true, in a way, but the flick has drawn flak for its many shortcomings. Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN has given the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and stated, “Dhoom 3 is let down by a <keyword id="1988035" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Convenient-script">convenient script</keyword> and its inability to deliver solid entertainment.” However, it’s Raja Sen of Rediff.com who drives the point home. He has given it 1.5 out of 5 stars and written, “Dhoom 3 is a children’s film made for children who’ve never seen a film.” And we cannot agree more. You will find loads of fascinating things in Dhoom 3, but just one thing is lacking – good cinema.

Just a few hours from now and a brand new 2014 will be upon us with cheering, partying and celebrations taking place all over the world. How did the <keyword id="1996024" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dream-merchants">dream merchants</keyword> fare, what about <keyword id="1996031" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Box-office-performance">box office performance</keyword> and most importantly, what was on the platter for the audience? <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> will never be the same again post 2013 – a year that has given the mainstream <keyword id="1996034" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-movie-industry">Indian movie industry</keyword> many reasons to rejoice. 
 
For one, Bollywood has gone big in every sense of the term. Unlike last year when small-budget films managed to make big bucks, 2013 was the year of the biggies and crores of rupees were spent on production and marketing. Movies like <keyword id="24705" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dhoom-3">Dhoom 3</keyword>, <keyword id="500441" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Krrish-3">Krrish 3</keyword> and <keyword id="227940" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chennai-Express">Chennai Express</keyword> top this trend but others are catching up fast. After all, the savvy audience of today wants big-time <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword> that spells perfection and novelty – be it great <keyword id="5210" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Star-cast">star cast</keyword>, exotic <keyword id="6542811" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="locations">locations</keyword> or stunning <keyword id="648530" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Special-effects">special effects</keyword>. But all these require big money – a prerequisite for <keyword id="1996041" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Box-office-success">box office success</keyword>. Big-budget movies have not disappointed either and at least nine blockbusters have raced to the coveted <keyword id="925977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rs-100-crore-club">Rs 100 crore club</keyword> in CY2013.

9 Bollywood Blockbusters
That Entered Rs 100 Crore Club In 2013

Reports suggest that the much-awaited instalment of the <keyword id="1959" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dhoom">Dhoom</keyword> Series, <keyword id="24705" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Dhoom-3">Dhoom 3</keyword>, will be released on December 20, 2013. It has been touted as one of the most anticipated releases of the year, made with a whopping budget of Rs 150 crore. Before we get to the perfectionist Khan, let us look at the Dhoom Franchise. The first movie titled Dhoom was released way back in 2004 and was directed by Sanjay Gadhvi. As per <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> Hungama, the movie did a business of Rs 15,93,49,638 (total gross business) and was considered a hit. 
 In 2006, the <keyword id="36603" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Yash-Raj-Films">Yash Raj Films</keyword> banner came out with the sequel of the movie, starring <keyword id="6354563" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Hrithik-Roshan">Hrithik Roshan</keyword> as the antagonist. This movie did a phenomenal business at the box office and raked in Rs 40,30,53,277 (total gross business). 
 
Dhoom is perhaps the only movie series in India where the villain plays a far more significant role. He personifies style, is shamelessly wicked and yet manages to create a place in the hearts of the audience. Hrithik Roshan and <keyword id="6354967" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="John-Abraham">John Abraham</keyword> both have great looks and chiselled bodies, and people were awestruck to see them perform the kind of stunts that they pulled off in these movies. 
 
Now that Aamir is planning to step in their shoes, it is expected that he will take things even a step further and this is where the problem lies. All through the promos, we see Aamir trying out great bike stunts and even trying to do trapezes. Although Aamir has tried hard to build his body, learn acrobatics and has gone through a rigorous tap dance training as well, he does not essentially have the physique to carry out these things. The character of a villain that a Dhoom series demands does not suit Aamir’s physique and we are not just talking about his age or the six-pack abs here – we are referring to the full package. 
 
It is too early to comment about his hanging-on-the-ropes kind of stunts, but his tap dancing (in the promos) does look a bit forced! Nevertheless, we do salute the kind of effort that the Khan boy has put into learning all these skills. 
 Also <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword> belongs to a generation of actors where either the male <keyword id="18935" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="heroes">heroes</keyword> are larger than life or chocolaty lover boys. Aamir, with his innocent looks, started his career as a chocolate lover boy and was well accepted in movies like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. He has also played the tough guy in movies like Sarforsh and more recently in Ghulam and <keyword id="17231" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Ghajini">Ghajini</keyword>, but in all of these, he has always been the good guy. 
 So the major issue that Aamir will face is to break away from that stereotype and try to get into the shoes of the ‘mean guy.’ While he has to be the one that is causing all the trouble for Jai (the tough cop played by <keyword id="499" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="abhishek-bachchan">Abhishek Bachchan</keyword>) and Ali (played by <keyword id="36115" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="uday-chopra">Uday Chopra</keyword>), he must be appealing in his new avatar to win over the audience. 
 
Apart from the Dhoom series, we have also seen <keyword id="4546" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Shah-Rukh">Shah Rukh</keyword> bring in similar shades in his modern avatar of Don and later in <keyword id="6456475" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="don-2">Don 2</keyword>. At this stage, we are not convinced that Aamir will be able to bring that kind of touch to Dhoom 3. 
 
Moving over to the business part, Dhoom 3 must make at least Rs 300 crore at the box office to make a mark for itself. After all, the production cost of the movie is very high and it is releasing during the winter break when no other big releases are lined up. 
 
In recent times, we have seen Krrish 3 manage to bring that kind of magic at the box office. 
 
The TV rights of the movie have been reportedly sold for a whopping Rs 75 crore and a lot of cinema halls have hiked the ticked prices for this movie. 
 
At a time when most movies are promoted heavily by the stars who riotuously visit the shopping malls and appear at various reality shows, Aamir has consciously stayed away from the conventional route. We will have to wait for a few more days to find out whether Aamir’s idea to stay away from direct interaction with the crowd and TV shows have paid off or not. However, from the leaked storyline and the current promos, we feel that Dhoom 3 does not have much to offer and it will only boil down to the last-minute chase.

And a lot is at stake concerning this movie, directed by Anthony D’Souza, which is all set to release on 400-plus screens worldwide, including Europe, <keyword id="6378080" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="North-America">North America</keyword>, South-east Asia and Australia. Will it make it big at the box office, especially when there’s no lead lady paired opposite Khiladi Kumar? Will Aditi Rao Hyadri’s bikini act, Sonakshi Sinha’s item number ‘Saari Raat Party,’ which is touted to be the most expensive song ever (INR 6 million), and Akki’s action-comedy be enough to make Boss rule? If the buzz is to be believed, good news for the Roshans is that the distribution rights of Krrish 3 are already sold for Rs 140 crore with minimum guarantee, earmarking ‘table’ profit for the ambitious film. It is the third part of the franchise that started with Koi Mil…Gaya. Starring Hrithik Roshan, <keyword id="1655" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Priyanka-Chopra">Priyanka Chopra</keyword>, Kangana Ranaut and <keyword id="13902" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Vivek-Oberoi">Vivek Oberoi</keyword>, Krrish 3 is getting loads of attention for its special effects that are of international quality. Ironically, the reasons that make Ram Leela a hotly discussed flick could be the ones that may lead to its failure. So far, we love what director <keyword id="6358308" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="sanjay-leela-bhansali">Sanjay Leela Bhansali</keyword> has featured in the trailer, as well as the songs of the movie. Made on a budget of Rs 35 crore, the magnitude of this film is immense, the canvas is vibrant and the protagonists are two most good-looking people (<keyword id="598" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Deepika-Padukone">Deepika Padukone</keyword> and <keyword id="106133" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Ranveer-Singh">Ranveer Singh</keyword>) with a sizzling chemistry. On the flip side, we still remember Saawariya (Ranbir Kapoor-Sonam Kapoor starrer) and Guzaarish (Hrithik <keyword id="1903405" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Roshan-Aishwarya-Rai-Bachchan">Roshan-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan</keyword> starrer), both directed by SLB. Well, one turned out to be a dud and the other was appreciated only by the critics. So this time, we are just keeping our fingers crossed for Ram Leela.

The survey conducted amongst 3,000 Hindi-film goers analyzed films released between January 1990 to September 2023. The report which picked the top 100 movies, is based on audience equity. Ormax believes that franchises have a long way to go in the Hindi film industry. “Franchise films have been a dominant force driving the growth and stability for Hollywood over the past two decades. The contribution of franchise films to the Hindi theatrical domestic box office has grown from a mere 17% in 2019 to 45% in 2023,” said Sanket Kulkarni, head of business development (theatrical), Ormax Media. Hollywood has made popular movie franchises be it Justice League, Marvel, Star Wars and more. It also has long-running franchises like Fast and the Furious as well as Scream. The Indian film industry has recently kickstarted the trend with the highly successful Bahubali series as well as KGF. The high octane action flick has a single 18 minute-long sequence that cost ₹65 crore to make it. The film is directed by Sujeeth, and co-stars Shraddha Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Jackie Shroff in key roles. Saaho registers a massive pre-booking Theatres across Hyderabad witnessed an extensive advance booking soon after the tickets window opened. AMB Cinemas in Hyderabad, which was among the first to open windows for booking said they've sold 25,000 tickets for 83 shows. As of August 29, there were hardly any tickets left on BookMyShow for the show. According to IBtimes, AMB Cinemas are running shows with 308 seats and can earn upto ₹62,800 for each of the show. Saaaho will be released in IMAX too The action thriller also has an IMAX version which will be released in India and abroad. The film has been digitally re-mastered into an immersive IMAX format. While it has become a common to release Hollywood films in IMAX screens, Bollywood has not yet caught the trend is not yet prevalent among Indian filmmakers, particularly the ones in Bollywood. Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3, Akshay Kumar’s Gold and Rajnikanth’s 2.O are amongst the few Indian films to be released on IMAX. At Rs. 250 Crores ($ 39 million), the Telugu flick is pegged as the India's most expensive <keyword id="681" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="film">film</keyword> and has collected around Rs. 70 Crores worldwide on its very first day. While the Hyderabad-based Telugu film industry is known to churn out pricey films, the dethroning of celebrated Bollywood blockbusters like Dhoom 3, Happy New Year and Ek Tha Tiger has made many an Indian cinema goer sit up straight. 
 
The numbers are just a part of the deal. The facts are even mind boggling. The designers reportedly took 200 days to make the sets, and then employ around 8000 junior artistes. The film also took a leaf out of Lord of the Rings to design a language called Kilikili especially for the movie. Troy is loosely based on Homer’s Iliad where Achilles leads the Greek army as they invade the historical city of Troy, guarded by Hector. The film boasts of big names like Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, and Orlando Bloom. 
 
The film made $497 worldwide and is in the top 150 highest grossing films of all time. However, it is one of the most expensive films produced in modern cinema at a production cost of $175 million. 
 
3. Gladiator

Gladiator is about a loyal Roman general Maximus who is betrayed by the son of his Emperor who murders his own father to seize the throne for himself. Forced into slavery, Maximus ascends through the ranks and avenges the death of his family and emperor.

The three films The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), Prince Caspian (2008) and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010) revolve around the adventures of children in the world of Narnia, guided by Aslan, a lion that can speak and is the true king of Narnia. 
 
The series has grossed over a mind numbing $1.5 billion worldwide.

Sadly, that also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-movies-august-2014-7">means 71 titles will disappear.</a>
But don't despair. There are plenty of titles here to get excited about. If you're in the mood for a marathon, the bulk of the "Rocky" films, one through five, have been added. Also worth noting on the list is "Rounders," an awesome film about no-limit poker players, and 1979's "Mad Max," a film which propelled Mel Gibson to <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079501/">international stardom</a> (and spawned two sequels, with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/san-diego-comic-con-what-to-expect-2014-7/">another soon on the way</a>).
As far as television shows, if you didn't catch it when it first aired, Netflix adds Neil deGrasse Tyson's awesome reboot of the Carl Sagan classic "Cosmos" in August. You can find the new series in its entirety added on the 7th.
