Mumbai, May 22 () The number of coronavirus cases in the Dharavi area of Mumbai increased to 1,478 as 53 new patients were found on Friday, while death toll reached 57 with one more person dying, a civic official said. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official said that 15 positive cases which included a nine years old girl were found in Matunga Labour Camp within Dharavi since Thursday evening. Dharavi, known as the largest slum sprawl of Asia, has a population of over 6.5 lakh living in an area spread over 2.5 sqkm. KK KRK KRK

But it’s time we did. A group of teenage girls needs us to. 
 A bunch of 12 to 14-year old girls of <keyword id="6361831" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="dharavi">Dharavi</keyword>, who have been fondly nicknamed the ‘<keyword id="3315631" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dharavi-coders">Dharavi coders</keyword>,’ are driving change with the help of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=technology&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">technology</a>. 
 
An initiative which was started by filmmaker Nawneet Ranjan in 2014, who permanently moved to Mumbai from San Francisco after being moved by the lack of inspiration or ambition in the lives of the girls who lived in these slums and who witnessed daily occurings of starvation, injustices and domestic violence. 
 
He vowed to do something about it and decided to instill in them the ability of dream and have oodles of confidence by introducing them to computers. As a part of Dharavi Diary of 2014, a slum innovation project that he began, he ensured that the girls were taught coding through the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Learning Program. 
 
Later, they also used an open source app development tool, MIT App Inventor, to create their <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=apps&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">apps</a>. 
 The initiative has paid off tremendously as the girls have developed a bunch of <keyword id="6354741" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Apps">apps</keyword> that tackle most of the everyday problems faced by the residents living in the slums. 
 
For instance, they innovated an app called Paani which alerts the slum residents when it is their turn to collect water from the community tap, making the lives of the slum dwellers a whole lot easier as they didn’t have to waste time standing long hours in a queue every day. 
 
 
 
That’s not all. They also have an app focusing on women safety. Called, Women Fight Back, the app has a distress alarm, location mapping, SMS alert and a feature that helps one select emergency contact numbers. 
 
Some of the girls have built another app that intends to make Education simpler. Instead of the traditional teaching in classrooms route, the app teaches subjects like Science, English and Math through experiential activities such as taking photographs of objects to learn what it is called. 
 
They haven’t stopped there. 
 
Another app teaches kids the importance of segregating waste and waste management in general. It also gives ideas to recycle items to create new products. 
 
What started as a small project with just 15 girls has today become a project which ahs roped in 200 students, including boys- giving the children of Dharavi an opportunity to dream. That too in just two years. 
 
A recent fire in the slum in January however caused serious damage and led to the children losing their mobiles, laptops apart from everyday essentials like blankets, clothes, books, utensils and beds. 
 It’s time these young <keyword id="3315632" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="tech-developers">tech developers</keyword> need help. Nawneet Ranjan himself is urging people to.

 If you enquire the young boys and girls of Mumbai, especially the middle class and lower middle class ones, they will tell you how Dharavi is a steal deal. Whatever you get at Dharavi, especially the bags and handicraft items are of top quality and at a price that’s nominal compared to buying at plush shops. Go to a mall if you must, but Dharavi is a real value-for-money kind of place. When Meghana Gupta decided to put Dharavi on the e-Commerce map, it was not exactly a cake walk. The founder of <keyword id="2495950" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dharavimarket-com">Dharavimarket.com</keyword>, had a mammoth task before her. Nevertheless, the men and women here work in places that also arm them with specific skills. The leather and faux leather bags at Dharavi are to die for. Ask any middle class or lower middle class family about the quality of the products in Dharavi, and you would be amazed at how genuine the claims can be, supporting the produces of Dharavi. 
 But, putting it together would have been a herculean task for <keyword id="169883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Megha-Gupta">Megha Gupta</keyword> who decided Dharavi had to find its place, to realise its potential in the e-Commerce market. When the markets opened, they also created some sort of level playing ground for all those who had wares to sell. With that, the story of Dharavi was born. 
 Being an <keyword id="242156" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="urban-planner">urban planner</keyword>, Megha Gupta was not much aware of the alleys of e-Commerce. But, when the concept of Dharavi popped up in her head, she was most certain she would do everything to make it work.

Chandrapur, May 23 () A man who arrived in Chandrapur in Maharashtra from hotspot Dharavi in Mumbai on May 20 was among the three people who tested positive for novel coronavirus here, taking the district's count to 15, an official said. The 37-year-old man had arrived in Ballarpur from Dharavi and was in institutional quarantine since and his samples, which were sent for testing on May 22, returned positive on Saturday evening, said District Civil Surgeon Nivrutti Rathod. "The other two cases are a 16-year-old girl from Sindewahi taluka, and a nurse from Babupeth area who works in Mumbai and had returned here on May 16," Rathod added. COR BNM BNM

Misbehavior with nurses in Delhi On April 1, some of the participants of Tablighi Jamaat, who have been put in quarantine facilities in Delhi, have been misbehaving with healthcare staff and spat at the doctors and nurses. Quarantined migrants breach lockdown in UP Upset over being kept away from their families, migrant workers who have been quarantined in various districts in Uttar Pradesh, have now started running away from shelters. Reports coming in from districts say that an increasing number of quarantined workers are escaping the shelters, said IANS report. Officials, however, deny such reports and say that all is well with the quarantined. On Wednesday, 26 persons escaped from the shelter home in Faridipur in Sultanpur district where a total of 112 workers had been quarantined. Four of them were caught and brought back while 22 have not been traced yet. Third coronavirus case found in Asia’s largest slum Dharavi A 35-year-old doctor who has a clinic on the main road in Dharavi area of Mumbai tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday, a civic official said. This is a third COVID-19 case where the patient has a connection with Dharavi, considered to be Asia’s biggest slum with a high population density. An official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said a doctor who had a clinic on Dharavi’s main road and who was also attached as a surgeon to a prominent private hospital tested positive for the virus. “The building where he lives will be quarantined, and all high-risk contacts will be traced,” the BMC official said. In a complaint, some Tablighi followers who were rounded up and taken by bus to Ghaziabad on Tuesday-Wednesday for a medical check-up after they had been to the Markaz headquarters — said to be the new coronavirus epicentre in the national capital — allegedly spat on police personnel and government officials. A section of staff in Ghaziabad-based M M G Government Hospital wrote in a complaint on Wednesday to the Chief Medical Superintendent that “many Jamaat members admitted in the isolation ward of the hospital were misbehaving with the employees and the nursing staff”. The Jamaat members, many of whom are corona suspects, were seen roaming around semi-nude in front of female nursing staff and singing obscene songs, the complaint said. Shillong hospital to admit only critically ill non-COVID19 patients from other states A premier hospital of Shillong has decided that it will admit non-COVID19 cases from other states only if they are critically ill and certified so by the health authorities of the patients’ states, an official said on Friday. This is part of a precautionary protocol adopted by the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), an autonomous institute under the Union ministry of health and family welfare. The protocol, drawn up following a direction from the state government on Thursday, will be in force until the COVID-19 pandemic is over, NEIGRIHMS Director DM Thappa said. “Only critically ill non-COVID19 patients certified by the state health authorities concerned can seek treatment at the NEIGRIHMS, and only one attendant will be allowed to accompany the patient. However, such a person will have to be quarantined for 14 days as per government directives,” Thappa said.
