India's apex bank, the Reserve Bank of India (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>), went full guns blazing on its <keyword id="20402497" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-purchases" source="keywords">gold purchases</keyword> this <keyword id="23288581" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dhanteras" source="keywords">Dhanteras</keyword> and bought back 102 metric tonnes of its gold from the Bank of England to its domestic vaults between April and September 2024. This was one of RBI's largest-ever moves since India's 1991 economic crisis when RBI had to airlift 47 tonnes of gold. This takes India's total domestically held <keyword id="20344434" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-reserves" source="keywords">gold reserves</keyword> to 510.46 metric tonnes as of September 30, up from over 408 metric tonnes at the end of the previous fiscal year. This year, RBI has been buying gold every single month. RBI's overall gold reserves also burgeoned to 854.73 metric tonnes, including 324.01 metric tonnes held in safe custody with the Bank of England and the Bank for International Settlements, as well as 20.26 metric tonnes held in the form of gold deposits. India has been increasingly repatriating its gold reserves from overseas in recent years. In the 2023-24 fiscal year, the country had already moved 100 metric tonnes of gold from the UK to domestic locations. India is looking to significantly reduce its dependence on foreign custodians for safeguarding its assets. "The relocation of gold reserves to domestic vaults is a strategic move by the RBI to strengthen India's economic resilience and autonomy," said Dr. Amrita Sharma, a senior economist at a Mumbai-based think tank. "It signals a shift towards greater self-reliance in the management of the country's foreign exchange assets", she added. These increased domestic gold holdings have also boosted the precious metal's share in India's total foreign exchange reserves, rising from 8.15% at the end of March 2024 to around 9.32% as of September 2024. Per data, total gold demand increased by 5% YoY and reached 1,313 metric tons. This was more than double the investment demand seen by the yellow metal last year, when it stood at 364 metric tons. <h2> Demand going strong</h2>Just as demand for <keyword id="20050894" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-ETFs" source="keywords">gold ETFs</keyword> surged, demand for gold bars and coins dipped by 9%. But despite that, their YTD (year-to-date) demand remains robust at 859 tonnes, much above the 10-year average of 774 tonnes. The rising gold prices dented global demand for gold jewelry, which fell by 12% on a YoY basis, in terms of volume. But a corresponding 13% rise in the value of the jewelry consumed also indicates that consumers are okay spending on premium products, which might be less in quantity. Tech demand also boosted gold demand by 7% YoY, largely on the back of a booming electronics sector. Louise Street, Senior Markets Analyst at the World Gold Council, commented, "Q3 saw increased investment and over-the-counter activity prop up global gold demand and drive price performance. While the higher gold price dampened demand in the majority of consumer markets, the import duty cut in India kept jewelry and bar and coin demand remarkably high in a record-breaking price environment.". India's gold imports, which directly affect our current account deficit (CAD), rose by 21.78% to touch $27 billion during April-September, largely on the back of strong domestic demand emerging thanks to the festive season. The imports stood at $22.25 billion in September 2023-24, making yellow metal around 5% of the country's total imports, thereby pushing India's CAD to $137.44 billion during the first half of the current fiscal. However, silver remained flat at Rs 99,500 per kg. Meanwhile, gold of 99.55 purity declined Rs 400 to Rs 80,700 per 10 grams on Monday. According to Chirag Mehta and Ghazal Jain of Quantum Asset Management Company, “Gold has given returns of around 7% since the start of Samvat 2078 (Nov 5 2021). Gold could rally if the dollar weakens from its 20-year high. Typically, a 1% fall in the dollar, holding all else constant, is associated with a 0.88% rise in gold. Hypothetically, says the World Gold Council’s market commentary report, a full unwind in the DXY, or the dollar index, performance year-to-date return would imply a 13% rise in gold. Any weakness in the dollar would also trigger a rally in risk assets, which would be positive for gold. In India, demand for the yellow metal rose briefly in September and is expected to sustain in October too. If prices continue to correct globally, buyers may increase allocation to gold. According to commodity experts, investors with a long-term view on gold can start accumulating gold, but those with a short-term view can wait for further corrections. This means the precious metal has technically entered bear territory. “Gold prices fell for the third consecutive week as risk on sentiments kept investors away from precious metals,” said HDFC Securities in its report dated March 8. For consumers, there couldn’t be better news with the summer wedding season just around the corner and Akshaya Tritiya — pegged as an auspicious day to buy gold — falling on May 14. Why is the price of gold falling? Simply put, consumers are no longer looking for a safe haven store of currency. During the coronavirus pandemic, the markets were volatile and rates offered by banks were sub par, giving gold the edge over others as a store of value. Now that the number of COVID-19 cases are slowing down and the economy is on the track to recovery, gold prices are coming back down. Investors are instead putting money into US government gold yields to earn higher returns. “Gold prices declined on a stronger dollar as traders and investors switched to the best alternative to gold.” noted HDFC Securities. As a result, the dollar index rose by 1.2%. Government officials told <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/global-economics/gold-s-slump-boosts-indian-buying-ahead-of-wedding-season">Bloomberg</a> that imports have jumped 41% in February to the highest that they’ve been since November 2019, which is another indicator of demand coming back. It’s time to buy up gold Last year may have been stellar to buy gold on the commodity exchange, but physical consumption was in the pits. According to the World Gold Council (WGC), the demand for jewellery plunged by 34% in 2020 as compared to the year before. Now, the demand for physical gold is seeing an uptick as prices dip to a near one-year low. It also helps that the Modi administration reduced import duty on the yellow metal from 12.5% to 7.5%. "GJC had been representing this concern for many years and we are glad that the government has acknowledged it and reduced the import duty," said chairman of All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) in a statement. Lower prices, however, are only one part of the picture. In India, gold holds an important place in Indian weddings and the summer wedding season is set to occur between mid-April to May. Jewellers are also hoping that Akshaya Tritiya — the second-most auspicious day to buy gold for Hindus after Dhanteras — will also lead to a surge in demand. “The festival and wedding looks good. The investment demand has come back, and the jewelry demand will come in after the rates stabilize,” said Ashish Pethe, chairman of the All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council in a <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/global-economics/gold-s-slump-boosts-indian-buying-ahead-of-wedding-season">statement</a>. He believes that the demand will also see a boost since a lot of weddings that were postponed in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic will be scheduled for 2021. Analysts believe the rates of precious metal may continue to fall given the sharp recovery in economic activity and a slowdown in COVID-19 infections. However, gold could turn bullish again if central banks choose to step in. Sovereign debt for all countries has increased during the pandemic and the balance sheets are bloated in the face of public expenditure. “We do not think yield will sustainably rise given the fact that governments do not favour higher yields on their accumulated gigantic debt,” said the lead analyst of institutional equities at YES Securities, Hitesh Jain. Rising rates of yields — the interest rate that the government has to pay out for borrowing money from the market — is not favourable with high debt. Gold markets - Poised for a November rally?
Last week, the gold price rose 3.5% ending Friday at $1,316/oz. This belied considerable intra-week volatility as bullion fell to an intra week low of $1,255/oz before rallying sharply (some $60/oz) due to the end of US Government shutdown and an expansion of the debt ceiling. Interestingly the gold holding of SPDR Gold Shares (the world's largest gold ETF) declined by 1% (8.8 tonnes) to 882.2 tonnes, the lowest level since February 9th 2009. Year-to-date 2013, the gold holding of SPDR has declined by 438 tonnes (-34.6%), a major reason why bullion has declined by 21% ytd 2013. Looking ahead, history would indicate that November is usually a strong month (with an average monthly gain of 3.8% in November) for gold prices thanks to the wedding and festival season in India. Thus we believe that bullion could mount a modest rally to the $1,350-$1,400/oz range over the next month or so.
Morgan Stanley analyst Paretosh Misra agrees.
"Indian festival season could provide a lift to gold," writes Misra in a note. "Traditionally, the Diwali festival (specifically, Dhanteras, the two days before Diwali) is the biggest gold buying period of the year in India. In the last 10 years, gold has risen an average 2.5% in the one month around Diwali. While government's new import restrictions and INR depreciation could adversely affect gold imports, buying should be supported by ~20% YoY decline in gold in Rupee terms."
Société Générale analysts Jesper Dannesboe and Robin Bhar, however, believe any such rally would be very limited.

Short-term speculators appear to have accumulated substantial short positions over recent weeks but they were squeezed by a seasonal pick-up in Asian physical demand. Physical premiums in Hong Kong and India have risen recently and the gold forward curve this week moved into slight backwardation at the very front end of the curve. This tightness in the physical gold market is likely to be short-lived as the pick-up in Asian physical buying is partly seasonal and partly opportunistic (on big price drops) while ETF selling continues on a trend basis and we expect no significantly mine supply cuts until the gold price gets down to below $1,000/oz. 
It is difficult to say exactly how much further the gold price can rally on the ongoing short- covering but we would be surprised to see the gold price much above the $1,350 level. The medium-term drivers of the gold price are, in our view, still firmly bearish. The US economy is in recovery mode, US real interest rates have risen and are likely to trend higher as the recovery gains strength, inflation is very subdued, Fed tapering, while perhaps somewhat delayed, should be completed next year.

Goldman Sachs head of commodities research Jeffrey Currie is also bearish on gold in his <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-not-ready-to-short-gold-just-yet-2013-10">latest note to clients</a>, but warns that it's not time to short it quite yet.
"We continue to argue that the key to the gold outlook is data that shows a strong US recovery and gives the market confidence that tapering will begin, says Currie. "We still believe that this is the key trigger for gold prices even as the risks of deferred tapering have increased. Accordingly, we still expect gold to trade close to our near-term target of $1300/toz until the end of this year when our economists expect economic data to begin to show some confirmation of the economic improvement embedded in the 2014 US outlook."
