The prepaid plans of Rs 309, Rs 349 and Rs 509 will have validity of 56 days. However, for both prepaid and postpaid users, the company has added two new plans of Rs 349 and Rs 399. The Rs 349 prepaid plan will give 10 + 10 GB data for 54 days and the postpaid one will give the same data for 2 months.

 We are now nearing September again and Mukesh Ambani is getting ready to launch the much talked about ‘<keyword id="4289270" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-phone">Jio phone</keyword>’. The new feature phone from Reliance Jio is expected to once again shake the industry to its core but this time around the massive disruption will be felt not just by the telecom sector but other industries too. Mukesh Ambani made it clear in his AGM speech that he is looking to capture the feature phone market of India with his new phone, reason why the new phone is specifically designed for the ‘feature phone’ market of India. The device comes with 2.4-inch display with QVGA display, microSD card slot, torchlight, FM radio, supports voice commands in 22 Indian languages, has a panic button and comes with advanced NFC support for digital payments. With Jio aiming to deliver 5 million units every week to consumers across the country, low-end smartphone companies like Intex, Micromax, Lava will have to match up to the new Jio phone that will be sold for Rs. 1500 which will be refunded at the end of three years. The Low-end manufacturers are certain to feel the Jio heat and it may not be limited to the low end device manufacturers but also companies selling smartphones under Rs. 5000. Jio’s new phone is packaged in a way that makes it the perfect device to introduce both smartphone and 4G network to the feature phone market of the country. 
 
DTH Market The DTH industry in India is already trying to keep up with internet video services like <keyword id="128682" type="TOPIC" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>, Hotstar, Voot and many others, now the sector needs to watch out for the disruption from Jio Phone. Jio phone will come pre-loaded with all Jio apps including Jio TV, Jio Cinema, Jio Music etc making the phone an all in one entertainment device, meaning Jio Phone can very easily turn into a DTH device in itself by simply topping up for Rs. 309 per month. This is going to disrupt the smartphone market. Ambani said they plan to collect refundable deposit of Rs 1500 from users to protect misuse of the free offer. A JioPhone user can use the phone for 36 months and get back the deposit amount. “Today, Jio is going to reinvent the conventional feature phone. Let me introduce India ka Intelligent SmartPhone-JioPhone,” announced Ambani. "We plan to collect a fully refundable, one-time, security deposit of Rs 1,500 with everyone. From 15th August, 2017, all Indians will have access to the highest quality &amp; quantity, affordable &amp; unlimited data," said Ambani, adding "This is how Jio will end the digital exclusion in India. And this is what I call true digital freedom." The JioPhone will be available from September and the pre-booking will start from August 24. "The JioPhone will be available for user testing in beta from 15th August and for pre-booking from 24th August," said Ambani. Starting August 15, JioPhone will give users unlimited data to feature phone users. JioPhone will have <keyword id="4405573" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-dhan-dhana-dhan">Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan</keyword> plan at Rs 153. In order to fit every pocket, Mukesh Ambani introduced two sachets, launching weekly plans. "If these users were to consume a similar quantity of data on other operator's network, they would spend Rs 4,000 – 5,000 per month. Jio will provide this at only Rs 153 per month, that is one-thirtieth, 3% of the existing price," said Ambani. Ambani dedicated the JioPhone to the nation and said digital life will no longer be the privilege of the affluent few. "JioPhone will make the 2G feature phone obsolete. With this, I am sure Jio will set a new world record. From last quarter of 2017, all Jio phones will be made in India. We are targeting to have 5 million Jio Phones a week," said Ambani. JioPhone is a ‘Made in India’ 4G VoLTE enabled smartphone and is designed to be easy and friendly. The JioPhone supports all Indian languages. Voice calls from JioPhone will be free and 50 crore feature phone users don't have access to basic internet. Today, every young India should have information access at his fingertips and this is what JioPhone will enable," said Ambani. He said the digital disempowerment and unfairness must end and Jio is committed to end it. "We shall achieve this in three ways – Connectivity, Data Affordability and Device Affordability," said Ambani.

The launch could coincide with <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword>' annual general meeting on July 21. It would probably follow Jio's new tariff plan with aggressive price-points that is expected to happen in a couple of days, now that the Dhan Dhana Dhan offer is about to close. Rajiv Sharma, HSBC director and telecoms analyst, said in a note that the price of Jio’s 4G feature phone could be "at a paltry Rs 500 (sub-$8) to lure 2G subscribers to directly switch to 4G, "which implies "Jio subsidising each handset by as much as $10-15 (Rs 650-975)." "This launch can create the next wave of disruption in the telecom market," a top executive of one of the leading telcos told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/company/corporate-trends/reliance-jio-may-disrupt-the-market-again-with-rs-500-handset/articleshow/59448452.cms">ET</a>. "Not just us, but the existing players could surely lose a chunk of their low-end voice customers - most of whom are pre-paid - once this 4G feature phone is launched." The phone would probably flood the market, since more than 18 million units have been ordered, the shipment of which would begin from July end or early-August, with a launch around India’s Independence Day on August 15th.

WIth a 4G phone for Rs 500, Jio will hit rival telcos even harder

RS Sharma, the chairman of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (<a href="http://businessinsider.in/topic/TRAI" target="_blank">TRAI</a>), has said that a section of telcos has been making "too much of noise," lately. He also dismissed telcos’ demand to fix the interconnect usage charge (IUC) as the minimum price of a voice call. IUC is the price that a caller's operator pays to the receiving party's operator. Indian telcos like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/markets/economy/airtel-and-vodafone-to-keep-price-war-on-to-counter-jio/articleshow/58313681.cms" target="_blank">Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India</a> and Idea Cellular had asked <keyword id="6356988" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="TRAI">TRAI</keyword> to fix IUC of 14 paisa per minute as the floor for retail voice tariffs. "There is too much of noise saying that the regulator must fix the minimum price. I don't think that's really a correct thing to do for a regulator. The price is under forbearance; both the top and bottom should be under forbearance. It cannot be that for customers you can raise as much as you want, but you can't take it below a certain threshold," Sharma told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/policy/airtel-vs-voda-vs-jio-trai-chief-says-telcos-making-too-much-of-noise-rules-out-floor-for-call-rates/articleshow/58504570.cms" target="_blank">ET</a>. Fed up of telcos bickering, TRAI chief rules out floor for call rates

Telecom minister <keyword id="6357016" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manoj-Sinha">Manoj Sinha</keyword> has said that the Indian government is thinking against selling airwaves that support <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/tech/mobile/5G-in-India/articleshow/52759218.cms">5G technology</a>, considering that 5G is still a work in progress even in foreign countries. In an interview to <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/opinion/interviews/time-not-right-for-5g-spectrum-auction-focus-is-to-connect-the-unconnected-manoj-sinha/articleshow/58407360.cms">ET</a>, Sinha said that aid the government is yet to decide on the time frame for the next auction, and is not prepared for selling 5G airwaves as of now. He mentioned December 2018 to be the possible deadline for covering all 250,000 gram panchayat.

Chinese mobile chip maker <keyword id="2503529" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Spreadtrum-Communications">Spreadtrum Communications</keyword> is said to be in the process of manufacturing a 4G-enabled feature phone that would cost around Rs 1500 in the Indian market, half from the current starting prices of 4G phones from Indian brands like Lava and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/topic/Micromax">Micromax</a>. "We are working on a technology that makes a Rs 1,500 4G feature phone viable. We have already started concept promotions to our partners," Spreadtrum Communications' country head Neeraj Sharma told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/hardware/you-could-soon-buy-a-4g-feature-phone-at-just-rs-1500/articleshow/58467323.cms">ET</a>. This has prompted both Lava and <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>, along with Karbonn, to reduce prices of their entry level feature phones. A 4G phone at Rs 1,500 could soon be a reality

In the past few days many celebrities have raised their voice against the appointment of TV actor <keyword id="258297" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Gajendra-Chauhan">Gajendra Chauhan</keyword> as the <keyword id="2898983" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="FTII-chairman">FTII chairman</keyword>. Now film-maker <keyword id="30014" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vivek-Agnihotri">Vivek Agnihotri</keyword>, whose political satire ‘Buddha In A Traffic Jam’ recently won the Best Original Screenplay in a foreign language award at the Madrid International Film Festival, has extended full support to FTII students. Pointing towards the qualification of Chauhan, he told Business Insider (BI) that “one can’t give a chance to a raw pilot to fly a Dreamliner and an intern to do a bypass surgery on a patient.” The controversy is very far from over; the students of the prestigious <keyword id="129188" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Film-and-Television-Institute-of-India">Film and Television Institute of India</keyword> (FTII) have been agitating for over 30 days and have declared that they would continue to protest against <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> member Chauhan’s appointment as the new head of the governing council. 

	Agnihotri, who directed movies such as ‘Hate Story’, and ‘Chocolate’, ‘Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal’, told BI: “Chauhan is not qualified for this job. I don’t care what movies he has done or their quality. What matters is that he has no track record, views, and above all vision for cinema.”
 

	Chauhan, who played the role of 'Yudhishthir' in popular television serial "Mahabharata", on his part remained unfazed and said he should be given a chance and allowed to work.
 The film-maker, whose wife actor <keyword id="6158" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pallavi-Joshi">Pallavi Joshi</keyword> has stepped down on July 6 from the <keyword id="2929545" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="FTII-Society">FTII Society</keyword> in an expression of solidarity with students, said: “Chauhan claims he has done over 70 serials. So what? Even a junior artist does over 1,000 films.” Chauhan is not suited for the job, he said. On being asked about the role of the <keyword id="384646" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Information-and-Broadcasting-Ministry">Information and Broadcasting Ministry</keyword> in the controversial appointment, Agnihotri said: “I think I&amp;B authorities underestimated the FTII. They thought it is just an institute with few hundred scholars somewhere in Pune. Who will bother? But it (the decision to appoint Chauhan) boomeranged on them.” 

	He further said the appointment has nothing to do with syllabus or any other administrative issues. “It is about prestige of the institute which, now, everyone unanimously believe will be hampered by Chauhan’s appointment.”
 

	Justifying the strike, he said FTII students are politically more active than engineering or MBA students. In Vivek Agnihotri’s view, an alumnus of Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Delhi, the government should not hesitate to change the chairman.
 

	One such change will set the precedence for other institutes and bring the government under pressure, he said, adding: “There will be chaos. It is a complex situation and I am sure sooner or later our pragmatic PM will intervene and find a solution.”
