The problem has also been complicated by the emergence of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/double-mutant-coronavirus-variant-california-india-2021-4">a new variant first identified in the country</a>. New Delhi, Apr 1 () Infosys Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Infosys, on Wednesday said it has partnered Narayana Health to open a 100-room quarantine facility for COVID-19 patients in the vicinity of Narayana Health City in Bengaluru. The facility, aimed at serving patients belonging to the economically weaker sections of the society, will accommodate patients, offer regular monitoring by doctors, nurses, and provide essential medication, free of cost, a statement said. The patients in the isolation facility will be treated and monitored by the doctors and nurses of Narayana Health City, it added. Earlier this week, Infosys Foundation had announced its commitment of Rs 100 crore to help the government with COVID-19 relief efforts. "Diseases often hit the underprivileged the hardest, because they cannot afford proper treatment, and at the same time, they lose their livelihood while dealing with the illness. "This is a small effort by the Foundation to ensure that the underserved people of our society get access to clean, hygienic accommodation as well as appropriate medical treatment," Infosys Foundation Chairperson Sudha Murty said. Devi Shetty, chairman and executive director of Narayana Health, said providing safe-spaces, with proper medical care to enable patients to isolate themselves, will play a big role in India's fight against COVID-19. New Delhi, Apr 14 () Donation platform GiveIndia on Tuesday said it has launched the 'India COVID Response Fund' (ICRF) with initial donations worth Rs 75 crore to support the on-ground COVID relief efforts being carried out by its network of verified non-profits.Some of the early donors to the fund include the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, Google.org, HSBC India, Omidyar Network India, UBS Optimus Foundation, Marico, Uber India (through Uber Care driver fund), Binny Bansal and A.T.E. Chandra Foundation.The fund will use a data-backed approach to identify the most critical areas of intervention and scale the relief efforts pan India, a statement said.The donation platform is aiming at creation of a larger corpus that can support up to 10 million people nationally, it added."Since we started fundraising for COVID relief work on March 22, we have received donations from more than 2 lakh people globally, raised Rs 75 crores, partnered with over 40 organisations, onboarded more than 100 non-profits, and these initial efforts will impact one million people," GiveIndia Director and ICRF Advisor Govind Iyer said.However, the on-ground requirement is much larger and the fund is an open platform for all to come together and support the most critical need of the hour, he added.Other partners in the collective are CSIP (Centre for Social Impact and Philanthropy) from Ashoka University, Bridgespan, Indiaspora, Sattva, Dasra and IIFL Wealth, the statement said.An expert advisory group has been set up to guide fundraise and allocations, including Dr Devi Shetty, (Chairman, Narayana Health), Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw (Chairman, Biocon), Sanjiv Mehta (Chairman, HUL), Surendra Rosha (CEO, HSBC India), Binny Bansal (Co-founder, Flipkart), Manoj Kohli (Country Head, Softbank) and Amitabh Chaudhry (CEO, Axis Bank).Shilpa Kumar (Investment Partner, Omidyar Network India), Ingrid Srinath (Director, CSIP, Ashoka University), Arun Seth (former Chairman-BT), Amita Chauhan (Chairperson, SVP Mumbai), Shailesh Haribhakti (CA), Haigreve Khaitan (Managing Partner, Khaitan &amp; Co), V Vaidyanathan (MD &amp; CEO, IDFC First Bank), Neeraj Aggarwal (Head APAC, BCG) and Karan Bhagat (MD &amp; CEO, IIFL Wealth) are also part of the effort."ICRF will focus on preventing the spread of the coronavirus, providing humanitarian aid, supporting our health workers and enabling the COVID-hit families to rebuild their livelihoods. Bansal will be staying in Bengaluru’s Koramangala area, which is considered as a boulevard of billionaires. 
 His house is not very far from <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>’s office. After Bansal moves in, he will be in the same neighbourhood as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nandan+nilekani&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Infosys co-founders Nandan Nilekani</a> and Kris Gopalakrishnan along with Dr Devi Shetty and Rajeev Chandrasekhar among others. 
 
Meanwhile, Bansal paid the highest stamp duty and acquired the home from the Iqbal family, one of the long-time residents of the area.

Flipkart’s Binny Bansal is going to move into Rs 32-crore home; will be staying next to billionaires

Known for its philanthropic achievements, the Devi Shetty promoted <keyword id="58595" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narayana-Hrudayalaya">Narayana Hrudayalaya</keyword> is planning public offering. As per a news report by The Economic Times, the CDC and <keyword id="63460" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="JP-Morgan">JP Morgan</keyword> PE-backed Narayana Health is aiming to raise around Rs 1,200-1,500 crore through this offering, and is being valued at Rs 5,000-5,500 crore. 
 The company operates a chain of multispecialty and super specialty hospitals. It has appointed investment banks such as Jefferies, Citi, JP Morgan, Axis and <keyword id="6361420" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IDFC">IDFC</keyword> to manage the share sale. 
 "The company will raise around Rs 500-600 crore of primary capital while the rest will go towards the exit for existing investors," an investment <keyword id="48669" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="banker">banker</keyword> told the financial daily. JP Morgan's agreement with the company for being an investor for seven years is nearing its end and the fund is now desperately looking for an exit. 
 
A company spokesperson, however, did not respond to detailed emailed queries seeking comments from the ET. 
 
In 2008 equity investors JP Morgan and Pinebridge Capital had invested $100 million in the company for a 25% stake. The company was valued at Rs 1,600 core at that time. Early this year, CDC Group, the <keyword id="67372" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UK-government">UK government</keyword>'s investment arm, invested around $50 million, or Rs 300 crore, in the company for a 10% stake. The company was valued at around Rs 3,000 crore then. 
 
The investment by CDC was seen as a pre-IPO deal. "CDC might also look at partly exiting its investment in the company through this share sale," the banker said. 
Founded in 2000 by Dr Shetty, the group now operates the third largest hospital chain in the country spanning 17 cities. 
 
The hospital chain also operates telemedicine centres where it offers free consultancy by top doctors to remote health centres outside the main hospitals. Its network spans across 150 telemedicine centres, including 50 in Africa. 
 
Narayana Hrudayalaya has more than 7,500 beds in 29 hospitals, spreading across 17 cities that fetch around Rs 800 crore worth of revenue. Its profit margins are as thin as 8%. The hospital treats more than 2,00,000 in-patients and around 1.5 million out-patients annually. 
 
The ET report further reads, the reason for its thin margins is because of the low-cost model the company follows: for instance, it charges somewhere between Rs 45,000 and Rs 50,000 for a heart surgery which is way cheaper than other private hospitals. While the cost of setting up a bed in Narayana Health is around Rs 17.5 lakh, against Rs 1 crore at its peers.

Far from the image of today’s entrepreneur is 59-year-old <keyword id="2892029" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mir-Imran">Mir Imran</keyword> who not only starts one company every year but saves lives with biomedical products and inventions. 
 Economic Times reported Imran has been starting one company every year for the last 25 years through his applied research lab InCube in San Jose, the 'capital' of <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword>. 
 
Imran, who has studied at All Saints High School in Hyderabad before moving to New Jersey, also holds over 400 US patents and thousands of international patents, and has sold about 15 medical technology companies in his career. 
 
"I'm always hunting for big problems to solve," Imran told the financial daily. 
 
When asked why he sticks to medical technology, as it is a space clogged with regulatory constraints, Imran said, "I guess I'm a sucker for punishment." 
 
He was recently in the limelight for having hit upon the holy grail of drug delivery: a pill which can potentially eliminate the need for painful injections. 
 ET reported that <keyword id="2871427" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rani-Therapeutics">Rani Therapeutics</keyword> has built a mechanism to deliver a drug orally- instead of daily painful injections- for conditions including diabetes and multiple sclerosis. The company, which raised about $25 million (Rs 160 crore) in a round led by Google Ventures and Novartis, has tied up with the latter to test their range of drugs on its pill. 
 
Imran's company is bypassing the use of big needles by packing a bunch of small needles in a little capsule. The drugs are carried in sugar needles, which in turn are deceptively hidden in the capsule. 
 
"We can embed any biologic drug on our platform," Imran told ET, who named the company Rani Therapeutics after his mother, the one who moulded his engineering skills. 
 
Imran has been in the Silicon Valley for the past 30 years, and never held a fascination for practising medicine. Equipped with a biomedical engineering, Imran could not come to terms with the memorising medical terms and diseases all-day long. 
 
"For me, trained as an engineer, where most things have clear explanations and are deterministic, this was a big frustration when I was at medical school," he told the financial daily. 
 
He dropped out of medical school in his third year, and decided to use his engineering skills to identify and solve medical problems. 
 
His earliest contribution dates back to the 1980s where he developed the intellectual property behind the automatic implantable defibrillator, a device implanted in the chest to prevent sudden death from cardiac arrest due to abnormally fast heart rhythms. 
 
"I have not met him, but I'm a great admirer. The defibrillator he invented has saved millions of life. .. a great scientist and entrepreneur," said Devi Shetty, chairman and founder, Narayana Health. 
 
As for India, Imran says the space has to pick up in terms of innovation, and has not visited in the recent past. 
 
"Companies in this field take 8-10 years to mature, and needs about $100-200 million runway before it starts showing results. Indian investors do not have the stomach for it," added Imran.
