India’s tally at the ongoing 2016 <keyword id="2957296" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="rio-paralympics">Rio Paralympics</keyword> is quite impressive. If India brought two medals home from Rio Olympics; Indian athletes have already bagged four at the Rio <keyword id="6387644" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Paralympics">Paralympics</keyword> so far. 
 
Held every four years, Paralympics is held for athletes from suffer from different disabilities. This year, India sent its largest contingent to Rio Paralympics too with 19 athletes. The Games will get over on September 18 and many events are slated till then. We are quite hopeful that India will increase its tally by then. Till then, here’s are four athletes who brought laurels to the country.

Shooter <keyword id="9458227" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="avani-lekhara" source="Orion">Avani Lekhara</keyword> scripted history on Monday as she became the first Indian woman to win a <keyword id="28217" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-medal" source="Orion">gold medal</keyword> at the Paralympics, firing her way to the top of the podium in the R-2 women's 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event here. The 19-year-old finished with a world record equalling total of 249.6, which is also a new Paralympic record. She's the fourth Indian athlete to win a Paralympics gold after swimmer Murlikant Petkar (1972), javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia (2004 and 2016) and high jumper Thangavelu Mariyappan (2016). In the SH1 Rifle category, shooters are able to hold a gun with arms. The athletes have an impairment in their legs, for example amputations or paraplegia. Some athletes will compete in a seated position, while others will compete in a standing position. 19-year old Avani Lekhara becomes the first Indian woman to win gold at Paralympics

Trailblazing <keyword id="6362604" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shooter" source="Orion">shooter</keyword> <keyword id="9458227" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Avani-Lekhara" source="Orion">Avani Lekhara</keyword> on Friday became the <keyword id="90844" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="first-Indian-woman" source="Orion">first Indian woman</keyword> to win two <keyword id="58509" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paralympic" source="Orion">Paralympic</keyword> medals by claiming the 50m Rifle 3 Position SH1 bronze to add to an unprecedented gold she had secured earlier in the ongoing Games here. The 19-year-old Lekhara, competing in her debut Games, qualified second for the event with a score of 1176, including 51 inner 10s. In the fiercely contested finals, Lekhara totalled 445.9 to finish ahead of Ukraine's Iryna Shchetnik, who let slip her grip on the medal spot with a poor third shot of 9.9 in the elimination. Lekhara had become the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic gold by claiming the top honours in the 10m air rifle standing SH1 event. That was also the first ever shooting medal that India had won in the Games. "It was a tough final but I'm happy to have made it into bronze. I could have done better than this. It's just what finals do to you," Lekhara said about her performance. "It is an amazing experience to win two medals in my first Paralympic Games. These two are my pet events. I was really working hard for these two for so many months. I gave my 100 per cent in the last shot." "There are a lot of things on which I have to work, and I will definitely do better than this next time. There were a lot of distractions but I gave my 100 per cent to this," she added, referring to the celebrations that followed her gold medal. The Jaipur-based shooter, who sustained spinal cord injuries in a car accident in 2012 rendering her immobile, had fired a world record equalling total of 249.6, which was also a new Paralympic record. Prior to her, Joginder Singh Sodhi was the lone Indian to win multiple medals in the same edition of the Games when he fetched one silver and two bronze medals in the 1984 Paralympics. His silver came in shot put, while the two bronze medals were won in discus and javelin throw. Javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia is the other multiple Paralympic medallist but all his three medals (two gold and a silver) have come in different editions of the Games. The gold in Friday's event was claimed by China's Zhang Cuiping with a new Games record of 457.9, while German Natascha Hiltrop took the silver with a 457.1 in the final. Athletes in SH1 Rifle have an impairment in their legs, for example amputations or paraplegia. Some athletes compete in a seated position, while others compete in a standing position. Lekhara is not done yet and will next be seen in the mixed 50m rifle prone SH1 event also featuring Deepak and Siddhartha Babu. She started shooting on the insistence of her father in 2015 at a Jaipur shooting range. "She was angry at her condition and hardly had a desire to talk to anyone. For a change, I used to take her to JDA shooting range in Jagatpura, Jaipur where she developed interest in shooting," her father Praveen Lekhara had told PTI after the gold medal win in 10m air rifle competition. The youngster was also inspired by Olympic gold-medallist rifle shooter Abhinav Bindra after reading his autobiography, which was a gift from her father. A student of law, Lekhara made her debut for India in 2017 World Cup in Al Ain, UAE. In the men's event 50m Rifle 3P, Deepak failed to qualify for the finals after finishing 18th with a score of 1114. With Lekhara's bronze, India's medal tally has risen to 12. The country has won two gold, six silver and four bronze medals so far, an unprecedented and truly remarkable performance given that its combined haul for all previous Games stood at 12 before this. Avani Lekhara becomes first Indian woman to win two Paralympic medals

Churu, Apr 25 () After a man committed suicide here fearing that he contracted coronavirus, the Churu Police in Rajasthan has started an initiative to create a feeling of togetherness and keep people motivated during the lockdown by connecting them with motivational speakers, artistes, celebrities and experts from different fields through social media.Apart from scheduling live sessions of TV actors, motivational speakers and theatre personalities in the series, the Churu Police is also planning to invite Bollywood actresses like Mahima Chaudhary and Lara Dutta, and Punjabi singer Guru Randhawa. On April 20, health experts appeared on a live session on the Facebook page of Churu Police and gave tips to the viewers for achieving a positive mindset. "People are getting emotionally depressed during the lockdown period and it is very important to keep them motivated. Positivity in society also helps in good policing therefore, we arranged live sessions of various celebrities and experts on the Churu Police's Facebook page," Churu SP Tejaswini Gautam told . Gautam, who herself is associated with theatre, thought of the initiative to instill hope and positivity among the people after the 30-year-old man committed suicide fearing that he had contracted coronavirus. "He was a security guard and was depressed due to the coronavirus pandemic and all that negativity. He feared that he had contracted the infection and took the extreme step. The man did not have any such infection but he took the extreme step under depression and negativity which was very alarming," the SP said. "After this, I thought of engaging people with positivity and decided to connect them with celebrities and experts of various fields. I explored this with my batchmates, friends, their friends and got the experts from different fields like acting, singing and sports onboard," she said. The initiative, supported by Samriti and Filmsthan organisations, started with Churu Collector Sandesh Nayak's session which was followed by the live session of javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia on April 20. Jhajharia interacted with Churu residents during the Facebook live session and gave tips for keeping their motivation high at all times and despite all odds. He shared his struggle with the viewers and said that he had to wait for 12 years for the Olympics. "The lockdown is a matter of just a few days, so please follow the advisories of the government and protocol. Everybody should utilise the time they are getting due to the lockdown," Jhajharia said in his live session. "Theatre expert Atul Satya Koushik immaculately shared very interesting and useful things and it was an enriching session for theatre artists and students," the SP said. The average viewership of sessions is around 22-25,000 but health care entrepreneur Priya Prakash's session received a huge response on Thursday as nearly 36,000 viewers attended the session during which she shared tips on health and hygiene, Gautam said. "The initiative is receiving a very good response, both from the public and from those who want to go live on our page," she said. "The response is beyond our expectations. Currently, we are holding the sessions between 5 and 6 pm till May 3. By doing this, we have noticed a 50 per cent decrease in the number of people on roads. As we have several other guests to go live, we would be doubling the number of sessions," the SP said. Filmsthan's Mudit Tiwari said sessions of sufi singers Roohani sisters, poet Ikram Rajasthani, artiste Gargi Malkani, author Kumar Ajay and theatre actor Dinesh Pradhan have already been fixed, and actors Hemant Pandey, Pankaj Tripathi, Kumud Mishra and singer Anamika have also agreed to do live sessions. "Besides, talks are on to connect singer Guru Randhawa and actor Anoop Soni with Churu people through this initiative and the number of sessions would be increased from one to two sessions per day," he said.
