<keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> requires an investment support of USD 1.4 trillion — an average of USD 28 billion per year — to become a net-zero economy by 2070 and raising <keyword id="20260327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-resources" source="keywords">financial resources</keyword> for adaptation and mitigation action of this scale is an "unprecedented challenge", according to the <keyword id="20613906" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Economic-Survey" source="keywords">Economic Survey</keyword> 2023-24 tabled in Parliament on Monday. Reaching net zero means achieving a balance between greenhouse gas emissions and the amount of these gases removed from the atmosphere by either natural processes, such as photosynthesis, or by other methods of carbon capture and storage. <br /><br />The consolidated report on the state of the economy in the previous year said India's climate action has been largely financed through domestic resources and the flow of international finance has been "very limited". <br /><br />Citing the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) data, the report said bridging the "substantial funding gap" necessitates allocating 2.5 per cent of India's annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to <keyword id="20018880" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-finance" source="keywords">green finance</keyword>. <br /><br />"Preliminary estimates indicate that the aggregate investment support required by India to achieve its 2070 net-zero target will be USD 1.4 trillion at an average of USD 28 billion per year. Raising financial resources for <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="keywords">climate change</keyword> adaptation and mitigation actions of this scale is an unprecedented challenge," the document read. <br /><br />A 2022 report by the Climate Policy Initiative found that domestic sources accounted for the majority of green finance in India, at 87 per cent and 83 per cent in financial years 2019 and 2020 respectively. <br /><br />While international sources are increasing (from 13 per cent in FY 2019 to 17 per cent in FY 2020), the economic survey said they are still insufficient to meet India's net-zero target. <br /><br />"Mobilising substantial capital from traditional sources presents multifaceted challenges in emerging economies like India. The perceived sovereign risks associated with emerging market and developing economies (EMDEs) and the capital-intensive nature of such projects, coupled with lengthy gestation periods and evolving regulatory frameworks, can create misalignment between investor expectations and project timelines," the government said. <br /><br />The economic survey also noted that the flows of global capital to <keyword id="20200084" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="developing-countries" source="keywords">developing countries</keyword> have been impeded by high costs of capital. <br /><br />Despite securing a good rating on its green-bond framework, Indian sovereign <keyword id="20177085" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-bonds" source="keywords">green bonds</keyword> have hardly received any "greenium" from private investors. It is more a "wall of capital" than a "flood of capital" that is waiting to fund energy transition in EMDEs. It is just not mobile. All of these together have severely hampered the flow of finance for green-transition projects, the survey said. <br /><br />"Greenium" or green premium refers to the savings an issuer of a green bond realises on the associated coupon payment because the bond is green. <br /><br />Financial support to help middle-income and poor countries fight climate change will be at the centre of this year's UN climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, where the world will reach the deadline to agree on the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) -- the new amount developed nations must mobilise every year starting 2025 to support climate action in developing countries. <br /><br />But achieving consensus will not be easy, given the disappointing progress made on major conflict points at the mid-year UN climate talks in Bonn, Germany. <br /><br />At the 2009 UN climate conference in Copenhagen, rich nations pledged to provide USD 100 billion annually from 2020 to help developing countries mitigate and adapt to climate change. However, delays in achieving this goal have eroded trust between developed and developing nations and have been a continual source of contention during annual climate negotiations. <br /><br />In May, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) claimed that developed countries had met the long-standing USD 100 billion-a-year promise by providing nearly USD 116 billion in <keyword id="20000757" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-finance" source="keywords">climate finance</keyword> to developing countries in 2022, with nearly 70 per cent of the money given in the form of loans. <br /><br />However, international non-profit organisation Oxfam last week said climate finance provided by rich countries in 2022 totalled no more than USD 35 billion. <br /><br />Developing nations argue that they cannot be expected to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions faster if developed countries -- historically responsible for climate change -- do not provide enhanced financial support. Rich countries are now expected to raise more than USD 100 billion, with developing countries, including India, demanding trillions of dollars to tackle climate change.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Anxiety over the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/election-impact-companies-trump-harris-2024-10">US election</a> could be hurting some workers' productivity.</li><li>When we see incivility, even secondhand, it can hijack our attention and focus, an expert told BI.</li></ul><p>AJ Gareffa thought about taking off the day after <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-donald-trump-support-reflects-business-approach-tesla-2024-10">Tuesday's election</a> but instead plans to be off work for the entire week.</p><p>Gareffa, 27, is a therapist in Livonia, Michigan, near Detroit. They said they've already found in recent days that stress over the election is causing their mind to sometimes wander for a few seconds when they're with a client. Gareffa said that's a sign that time off is needed.</p><p>"You can't be a life raft to anyone if you are drowning," they told Business Insider.</p><div type="image" title="AJ Gareffa" height="1364" width="1818" msid="114881702" hostid="261" sizebytes="130340"></div><p>Gareffa isn't alone in finding it harder to concentrate at work because of anxiety over the election.</p><p>In a survey of 1,000 US managers conducted online in October by ResumeBuilder.com, 38% of respondents said the election had already hurt morale and productivity. Seven in 10 managers are worried tensions will worsen after the election.</p><p>Felix Kim is the founder and CEO of Redrob, a startup that develops skills assessments designed to remove bias from hiring. He is concerned, in part, that the election might hurt team cohesion and said he's already seeing signs that the inescapable campaign news is wearing on workers.</p><p>"People, of course, are distracted," Kim said. He said he's planning for disruptions to his company's routines because, no matter who wins, "it's going to be a wild ride."</p><p>Kim is considering telling the small company's workers who normally commute to its office in New York City several days a week to work remotely following the election, perhaps for as long as two weeks.</p><h2 id="e1c91231-8a67-4773-82bc-1feb19ee349c">The cost of tension</h2><p>The American Psychological Association found in an August survey that nearly seven in 10 US adults reported that the election was a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.apa.org/pubs/reports/stress-in-america/2024">"significant" source of stress</a>. That's similar to 2020 and above the 52% of adults who reported the same level of anxiety in 2016. The online survey, conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of the APA, involved about 3,300 adults in the US.</p><p>"The emotional drain of what we're all experiencing is going to lower productivity," Gabriella Kellerman, chief innovation officer at the virtual coaching platform BetterUp, told BI. How much we get done on the job can drop because of our own anxiety, and when working with others becomes fraught.</p><p>"As we get closer to the election, people are more likely to avoid coworkers based on feared political tension," Kellerman said.</p><p>That friction, or fear of it, can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/job-politics-talking-discussions-work-rules-election-hr-trump-harris-2024-8">hurt team output</a>.</p><p>Dorie Clark, a communication coach who teaches at Columbia Business School and is the author of "The Long Game," told BI that some workers have been preoccupied for months about the election. That's likely to increase on Election Day, and perhaps in its aftermath, she said.</p><p>She said some workers will be busy hitting refresh on news and social sites, looking for insight into how the election might swing.</p><p>"What they're wanting is the one thing they can't have, which is control," Clark said.</p><p>She said that for some workers, not knowing what their future — and that of the country —might look like because of the vote can produce major stress.</p><p>"This is not dissimilar to a patient who has acute symptoms but no diagnosis," Clark said.</p><h2 id="9ea62c69-07ec-4729-82df-cad4d8874b26"><strong>Bad behavior can be contagious</strong></h2><p>Christine Porath, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School and author of "Mastering Community," told BI that the toxicity of a divisive election could seep into our workdays as people are exposed to rudeness and bad behavior — even if they're only learning about it secondhand.</p><p>"It's very distracting and hijacks our attention and focus. It leads us to perform worse, be far less creative, less helpful to others, and unfortunately, it is contagious," she said.</p><p>Porath said that when incivility infiltrates the workplace, it primes employees to act or think dysfunctionally. Those employees, in turn, can spread that negativity to their coworkers.</p><p>The Society for Human Resource Management reports that politics is a "top driver" of incivility on the job. Discourtesy, the organization said, costs US organizations a collective $2.17 billion every day due to absenteeism and reduced productivity.</p><p>Yet it's not all bad news. In research Porath conducted several years ago involving six organizations in different industries, she found that workers who felt that they were thriving in their jobs were better able to repel the type of negativity — like that emanating from a contentious election — that could lead them to become distracted.</p><h2 id="8d93d8a3-d2e2-42f2-8755-79681440a7c4"><strong>What managers can do</strong></h2><p>Clark, the communication coach, said managers shouldn't make assumptions about their teams' political leanings but should instead be sensitive to employees' emotions.</p><p>Yet that doesn't mean being overly indulgent or letting workers focus too long on issues that aren't germane to the business.</p><p>"You might feel sad about who wins or loses a presidential election, but this is very different than, say, the death of a relative," Clark said.</p><p>Despite the widespread election worries, not every indicator signals that the vexing political climate is throwing off most workers. In an online survey of about 900 US workers conducted from late August to mid-September, the research firm Gartner found that while 48% of employees said they were anxious about who would win the election, two-thirds of respondents said those concerns hadn't dented their productivity at work.</p><p>Gareffa, the therapist in Michigan, doesn't want to risk being overly distracted when they're with clients. Gareffa plans to use the week off from work to spend time with family and perhaps focus on a hobby like drawing or sculpting. They said their clients have been understanding about the planned time away.</p><p>"It's been a good kind of example of how to take care of yourself without just running away from responsibilities or just pumping the brakes on life," Gareffa said.</p>

Worries about the election could be cutting into some workers' productivity

The <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> announced the decision of the newly formed six-member MPC (<keyword id="19913109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Monetary-Policy-Committee" source="keywords">Monetary Policy Committee</keyword>) today, following the conclusion of the three-day meeting, which began on October 7, 2024. <br /><br />Treading along expected lines, RBI rate-setting panel left the repo rate unchanged at 6.5% for the 10th consecutive time, in its 51st meeting today. The decision was made by a majority, with 5 out of 6 members voting for leaving the rate unchanged. <br /><br />This is the fourth bi-monthly monetary policy review for FY25, and the first since three external members were appointed to the panel earlier this month. The tenure of the previous three members had come to an end on October 4, 2024. <br /><br />While the outgoing members include Ashima Goyal (emeritus professor, Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research), Shashanka Bhide (honorary senior advisor, National Council of Applied Economic Research); and Jayanth R. Varma(professor, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad), the income members are Ram Singh (Director, Delhi School of Economics), Saugata Bhattacharya, an economist; and Nagesh Kumar (Director and chief executive, Institute for Studies in Industrial Development).<br /><br /><h2>Wait and Watch <br /></h2>RBI also changed its policy stance to neutral, while remaining committed to growth and bringing down inflation to its target of 4%. This means that at present, the bank is not inclined to either increase or decrease the interest rates, but will take a call depending on macroeconomic conditions and prevailing factors.<br /><br />"Taking all these factors into consideration, the real GDP growth for 2024-25 is projected at 7.2%, with Q2 at 7%, Q3 at 7.4% and Q4 at 7.4%", he said.<br /><br />As for inflation, Das highlighted that headline inflation had softened significantly in July and August and even food inflation experienced a certain degree of correction during these two months. Keeping this in mind, CPI inflation for 2024-25 i.e. current year is projected at 4.5%, with Q2 at 4.1%, Q3 at 4.8% and Q4 at 4.2%. CPI for first quarter of next financial year i.e. 2025-26 is estimated at 4.3%. <br /><br />"It's with a lot of effort that inflation horse has been brought to the stable, i.e. closer to the target and within the tolerance span, compared to its place or heightened levels two years ago. We have to be very careful about opening the gate, as the horse may simply hold again. We must keep the horse in tight leash, so that we do not lose control", Das added.  <br /><br />Most economists had anticipated a change in the central bank's current policy stance of 'withdrawal of accommodation'. This policy stand indicates that any interest rate cuts are presently off the table. However, given the ongoing geopolitical crisis and Fed's jumbo rate cut by 50-basis points last month, RBI may bring about a cut in interest rates, sooner than later.<br /><br />However, since food inflation remains high at 5.42% as of July 2024, experts had also estimated that now might not have been a good time for RBI to bring down interest rates. Moreover, PMI (purchase managers index) indices, which help in gauging the health of manufacturing and service sectors in the country, presently stand at a multi-month low, and even the core sector output is witnessing a contraction after 42 straight months. <br /> <br />As Suman Chowdhury, Executive Director &amp; Chief Economist, Acuité Ratings &amp; Research had highlighted, the current circumstances are not really conducive for RBI to opt for any affirmation action towards an easier monetary policy. "While the fear of the inflation “elephant” may have subsided with the CPI headline print well within 4.0% over the last two months and a favorable monsoon, the concerns around the stability of food inflation still linger among policy makers. The RBI may wait till December 2024 or February 2025 to make a rat cut, he continued.<br /><br /><h2>Housing sector rejoices</h2>From the point of view of homebuyers, the relatively affordable home loan interest rate regime will continue at a critical time for the Indian housing market - the festive season - amid rising housing prices and tapered sales. Q3 2024 saw average housing prices rise by a cumulative 23% in the top 7 cities even as average prices in these markets collectively rose to approximately Rs 8,390 per sq. ft. by Q3 2024-end, from Rs 6,800 per sq. ft. in Q3 2023. <br /><br />"The unchanged home loan rates are much-needed demand support in the ongoing festive quarter. We are expecting faster sales momentum in Q4 2024 when compared to the preceding quarter. This year's festive quarter may see similar demand to that seen in this period a year ago, if not higher. Over 1.27 lakh units were sold across the top 7 cities back in Q4 2023. RBIs MPC meet concludes today: Repo rate left unchanged at 6.5%

<ul class="summary-list"><li>High tariffs on China could prevent the US defense industry from getting needed supplies, a Beijing advisor said.</li><li>"If those military enterprises do not have supply from China, they will not be able to continue with their production."</li></ul><p>The US defense sector will face big repercussions if Donald Trump launches tariffs against China, an advisor tied to Beijing's government said.</p><p>Ding Yifan, a senior fellow at the State Council's Development Research Center, told international media that Trump's protectionist policies would prevent US defense manufacturers from accessing needed supplies.</p><p>"If those military enterprises do not have supply from China, they will not be able to continue with their production," he said, as cited by the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/6d0484e8-e65f-478d-8548-4e3aa37ed339">Financial Times</a>. These "severe consequences" would extend to other American sectors dependent on cheap Chinese parts.</p><p>Ding's commentary is among the most explicit pushback from China since Trump's election win. Though details remain scarce, the president-elect has pledged a 60% tariff rate on imports from the world's second-biggest economy.</p><p>Trump has argued that these policies will <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariff-plan-inflation-policy-impact-trade-war-china-rates-2024-5">fix trade imbalances</a> while directing investment in domestic businesses. His administration has also suggested that high tariffs boost the country's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjxhW_lkWps">negotiating power</a>.</p><p>But Ding reframed the idea as costly for the US, citing that a large part of American business relies on intermediate goods from China.</p><p>"Downstream American companies will not be able to find substitute products in a very short period of time if Chinese companies are not able to provide them with the products," he warned.</p><p>Meanwhile, the defense sector's dependence on Chinese producers is not minimal. In September, RTX CEO Greg Hayes said that the aerospace giant was looking for alternatives to replace <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/rtx-sees-labor-challenges-exploring-alternatives-china-suppliers-2024-09-10/">roughly 2,000 Chinese suppliers</a> it relied on.</p><p>To be sure, it remains to be seen how Trump's tariff ideas actually pan out.</p><p>According to a Monday note from JPMorgan, the incoming administration may prefer to implement lower rates on goods where China is the dominant supplier. If tariff rates are differentiated this way, the bank expects a modest impact on US GDP.</p><p>So far, the defense sector appears distracted by other developments tied to Trump's presidency.</p><p>As concern has grown that Trump's cost cutting <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vivek-ramaswamy-doge-wants-to-delete-entire-federal-agencies-2024-11">Department of Government Efficiency</a> could weigh on the sector, the <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/etfs/spdr-sp-aerospace-defense-etf-us78464a6313">S&amp;P Aerospace and Defense ETF</a> is down about about 4% since last Monday.</p>

Trump's China tariffs would cut into US defense production, Beijing advisor says

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Major Wall Street analysts are warning of more headwinds for Chinese stocks next year, even amid stimulus.</li><li>After an initially positive reaction, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are turning more bearish.</li></ul><p>China's stock market is likely headed for tougher times ahead, at least according to a few prominent Wall Street firms.</p><p>Strategists from the likes of Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have recently cut their outlooks, warning of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-growth-consumer-spending-demand-real-estate-debt-crisis-2024-8#:~:text=The%20world's%20second%2Dlargest%20economy,%2C%20falling%20short%20of%203.9%25.">slowing growth</a>, even as China's top leaders continue to unveil stimulus measures meant to reinvigorate its slowing economy.</p><p>Goldman Sachs cut its year-end 2025 target on the MSCI China Index from 84 to 75, keeping its overweight rating on the stocks but citing potential for lower earnings growth as a result of US tariffs. The index traded at roughly 64 on Monday.</p><p>Morgan Stanley, meanwhile, has a target of 63 by the end of next year. The firm had taken away its underweight rating on the index back in October, pointing to a better policy outlook.</p><p>The shifting outlook comes as the country has rolled out stimulus measures to address persistent economic challenges like its slumping <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-outlook-home-prices-slumped-beijing-property-crisis-real-estate-2024-4">property market</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-household-deposits-savings-luxury-consumer-demand-slowdown-economy-outlook-2024-7">weak consumer sentiment</a>.</p><p>The analysts had initially seemed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-xi-jinping-stimulus-plan-wall-street-stock-market-economy-2024-9">optimistic</a> after the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-aggressive-monetary-stimulus-interest-rate-rrr-2024-9">first round of stimulus</a> announced in September. The MSCI China Index hit its highest in over two years at the end of September, but in the time since, the index has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-stock-markets-csi300-golden-week-reopening-bazooka-stimulus-outlook-2024-10">now fallen</a> some 15% as analysts wonder how much more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-li-qiang-fiscal-stimulus-market-sentiment-us-election-2024-11">stimulus</a> is left.</p><p>"We see a low limited chance that China's government will front-load enough fiscal stimulus to target consumption and housing in 2025 due to concerns over moral hazard and a premature transition into a 'welfare state,'" Morgan Stanley strategists wrote in a Sunday note, adding, "We expect even stronger headwinds on corporate earnings and market valuation in the coming months."</p><p>The analysts are also pricing in tariff risks from Donald Trump's US election win. Trump has proposed sweeping tariffs, including steep 60% duties on Chinese goods. They acknowledge, though, that with the actual extent of the tariffs yet to be finalized, there is still a great deal of uncertainty.</p><p>"The magnitude, profile, timing of the tariffs, and the resulting policy reactions from China make the situation more fluid and difficult to analyze," the Goldman analysts wrote.</p><p>"The only certainty is that it will be the overarching theme driving market volatility in the months ahead, and investors will monitor the tariff developments closely to dynamically adjust their views on the market," they added.</p>

Let's take a look at these efforts and compare them with findings from other recent environmental reports to see the full picture.<br /><h2><keyword id="21818512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="emission-intensity" source="keywords">Emission intensity</keyword> reduction</h2>The economic survey proudly states that India has reduced the emission intensity of its GDP by 33% from 2005 levels by 2019. This means the country is producing less greenhouse gas for every unit of economic activity.<br /><br />This is a commendable achievement because India’s original climate change target — or Nationally Determined Contribution — was set to precisely 33% reduction of emission intensity by 2030, before being revised to 45% in 2022. While the jump from 33% to 45% is still a significant one with barely half a decade to go, this progress is a clear sign that India’s climate policies are having a real impact.<br /><h2><keyword id="19895602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-energy" source="keywords">Renewable energy</keyword> capacity</h2>According to the economic survey, 45.4% of India’s installed electricity generation capacity — which includes solar, wind, and hydropower — now comes from non-fossil sources, as of May 31, 2024. <br /><div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111774972" title="Economic Survey shows India&amp;#39;s energy needs to grow 2.5x, healthy growth in formal employment" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>As per reports by the Ministry of New &amp; Renewable Energy, India added a record renewable energy capacity of 18.48 GW in 2023-2024, with solar installations amounting to 12.78 GW, followed by 2.27 GW of wind energy. However, industry experts have also noted that India Inc. cannot afford to run out of steam now, and must continue to add at least 50 GW for the next six years to meet the target of 500 GW of renewables by 2030.<br /><h2>Indian energy needs</h2>India's energy needs are expected to grow 2 to 2.5 times by 2047, as per the latest economic survey.
