There are millions who enjoy eating ice creams from cones and then munching on the cones too. A Deoria-based farmers' group in Uttar Pradesh has now come up with 'kulhads' made from millet that can be used to drink tea and then eaten as a healthy snack. Interestingly, these 'kulhads' come at a time when 2023 has been declared as the "International Year of Millets" by the United Nations after a proposal from India in 2019. Christened 'Chai Piyo aur Kulhad Khao', these nutritious kulhads, made of co-arse grain of ragi and maize flour, have caught the attention of tea lovers at the ongoing Magh Mela in Prayagraj. Ankit Rai, a member of the group, said the demand for these 'kulhads' has been increasing manifold in rural as well as urban areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh. He said, "To promote the benefits of millets, we created edible kulhads made of millets about two years ago. We have a special mould wherein we can make 24 cups in one go." "Initially, we connected with tea vendors in small villages of east UP, including Deoria, Gorakhpur, Siddharth Nagar and Kushinagar, but we managed to win hearts in other parts as well. Now, the demand has spread to Prayagraj, Varanasi, Lucknow and other districts." Talking about the price of these 'kulhads', he said, "It takes Rs 5 to shape such kulhads and when tea is served in it, it costs Rs 10. The 'kulhads' are also eco-friendly. They are in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Mission as there is zero wastage." Women are mostly involved in making 'kulhads' of millet for health benefits. Several districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Jhansi, Chitrakoot, Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Bhadohi, Azamgarh and <keyword id="6388907" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ambedkar-nagar">Ambedkar Nagar</keyword>, have been facing locust attacks in the past 48 hours. In Uttar Pradesh, locust swarms have invaded several districts in the past 48 hours and attacked trees and crops. <keyword id="9477401" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-up-agriculture-department">The UP Agriculture Department</keyword> said that the authorities of the neighbouring districts like Hamirpur, Banda, Fatehpur, Kaushambhi, Mirzapur, Sultanpur, Mau and Ballia have been asked to remain alert. Deoria, the home district of state Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi, in eastern Uttar Pradesh has also faced locust attacks. "A swarm of locusts had come to Deoria, but they descended only on the Baisila Mainuddin village. Villagers made noise and chased them away. The swarm has gone towards Kushinagar. We are spraying chemicals to kill the pests and all districts have been put on alert," he said on Sunday. Shahi said insecticides are being sprayed through fire department vehicles. People have been told to make loud noise by beating 'thaalis' and other utensils, he said. Police sirens will also be blared and smoke would be used to chase the locusts away. The minister said that, "The UP government has given Rs five lakh to each of the bordering districts of the state for spraying chemicals to kill locusts. According to experts, broadly four species of locusts are found in India -- desert locust, migratory locust, Bombay locust and tree locust. The desert locust is considered the most destructive since it multiplies rapidly and is capable of covering 150 <keyword id="1022949" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="kilometres">kilometres</keyword> in a day. This insect, a type of a grasshopper, can eat more than its body weight. A one square kilometre of locust swarm containing around 40 million locusts, can eat as much food as 35,000 people in a day. Experts blame the growing menace of desert locusts on climate change. They say breeding of locusts is directly related to soil moisture and food availability. By Rana Ajit New Delhi, Apr 20 (): A recent assessment by the Uttar Pradesh government termed the state of the lockdown "unsatisfactory" in 40 of the 75 districts and called for stricter enforcement there of the restrictions to fight coronavirus. The districts in the "unsatisfactory" category include capital Lucknow, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Allahabad, Varanasi and Kanpur. Sources said Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi sent the assessment to district magistrates and police chiefs of all 75 districts in the state on April 18, two days before the planned implementation of a set of relaxations in the nationwide lockdown. An annexure listed all districts, describing the lockdown there as "unsatisfactory" or "satisfactory". The table also carried remarks, giving an indication of the reasons why a district got the "unsatisfactory" rating. These included the number of COVID-19 patients in the district, law and order violations, lack of coordination between different agencies and the detection Tablighi Jamaat members who might have spread the virus after their congregation in Delhi . "Satisfactory" districts in eastern Uttar Pradesh included Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's stronghold Gorakhpur, Ballia, Deoria and Maharajganj. "In this list, the lockdown situation in many districts of the state has been described as unsatisfactory, which makes it clear that the lockdown is not being enforced strictly in those districts," Awasthi's letter said. It called for "stricter enforcement" of the lockdown on the basis of the remarks made in the list. The 35 districts where lockdown and slowing down of COVID-19 spread have been found satisfactory include Aligarh, Etah, Hathras, Kasganj, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur and Hardoi. Lucknow is in the "unsatisfactory" category. Remarks mention a large number of COVID-19 patients (93 when the assessment was made) and Jamaat participants (159). The letter also said there was lack of coordination in policing there. In Gautam Buddh Nagar, it mentioned 67 confirmed cases, 82 Jamaatis, lack of coordination in policing and the suicide by a suspected coronavirus patient. In "unsatisfactory" Agra, there was lack of coordination between the principal and doctors at the S N Medical College. When the note was prepared, 152 people had tested positive for coronavirus there and 60 Tablighi Jamaat members were detected. Gorakhpur (UP), Apr 23 () Seven people were arrested on Thursday when they were trying to cross into Uttar Pradesh's Deoria district from Bihar amid the COVID-19 lockdown, police said.They were arrested from the Rampur Bujurg area of the district as soon as they entered Uttar Pradesh, Inspector at the Bankata police station Gopal Prasad said.They have been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), and provisions of the Disaster Management Act, he said. (Eds: Correcting typo in headline) Lucknow, May 24 () The novel coronavirus toll in Uttar Pradesh rose 161 on Sunday with six more deaths, while 254 new cases in the last 24 hours took the tally to 6,268, an official said. Of the six new fatalities, two were from Kanpur Nagar, and one each from Aligarh, Firozabad, Etah and Azamgarh, the official said in a statement. There are 2,569 active cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and 3,538 patients have been discharged following recovery, said Vikasendu Agrawal, state surveillance officer, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme. Out of the 254 new cases, 17 were from Gautam Buddh Nagar, followed by 15 each in Meerut and Deoria, 13 each in Amroha and Varanasi, 12 each in Rampur and Lakhimpur Kheri districts. Eleven more people tested positive in Gonda, nine in Azamgarh and eight in Bareilly, according to the statement.
