Dentsu International launches Sports Marketing Unit in India; Appoints ex-cricketer Anand Yalvigi as Director

<ul><li>APAC growth will be fuelled by rise of digital, now 61.1%, pacing ahead of global growth at 55.5% of overall ad spend.</li><li>Recovery almost 3x faster than previous global advertising decline following 2008 financial crisis.</li></ul>Advertising investment is forecast to grow by 9.2% globally in 2022, according to the latest dentsu Global Ad Spend Forecast report. The twice-yearly report which combines data from over 50 markets globally, anticipates US$745 billion will be spent globally. Ad spend in Asia Pacific is expected to grow by 5.9%, with digital forecast to increase 9.6% to a share of 61.1% of total APAC advertising spend. Moving towards a second consecutive year of growth following the 5.0% market dip in 2020, 2022 is projected to build on a stronger than expected recovery in 2021 which itself saw a record-high 14.4% growth in APAC, totalling US$241 billion. When compared to previous global financial and advertising crisis, notably the financial crash of 2008, this rebound is almost three times greater: in 2022 the growth forecast at 9.2% is nearly three times the 3.4% growth in 2011 – second year post global financial crisis. In 2022 the global ad market exceeds the 2019 pre-pandemic level of spend by 18.7%, whereas in 2011 the global ad market continued to be 1.0% lower than in 2008. In APAC, overall ad spend growth is boosted by key sporting events such as Indian Premier League, FIFA World Cup, Winter Olympics, and country elections in Australia and India. Digital and television continue to be the two powerhouses driving global and APAC ad spend, yet with opposite dynamics. Following a 24.8% increase in 2021 (vs 29.1% globally), dentsu forecast digital investment to grow by 9.6% (vs 14.8% globally) in 2022, fuelled by Social and Programmatic in APAC. This will result in the digital share of spend increasing to 61.1% (US$150 billion) of the total ad spend in APAC, over twice as big as the television share of spend (24.5%) in 2022. Linear TV ad spend increased by 5.1% in 2021, the highest rate since 2013. In 2022, dentsu forecast linear TV ad spend to grow by 1.4% to reach US$60 billion in APAC. Unlike digital and despite staying in high demand, dentsu is seeing linear TV share of spend on the decline – both globally and in the region – as Connected TV and Video on Demand (VOD) grow. Out-of-Home (OOH) and cinema will both see encouraging growth in 2022, respectively 12.8% and 23.4% globally (vs 2.8% and 30.0% in APAC). Radio too is forecast to grow, yet at a slower pace of 1.5% in APAC (vs 2.0% globally). As with previous predictions, ad spend in newspapers and magazines will continue to decline globally and in APAC. Globally, the industries that will see growth in ad spend this year will include the beleaguered Travel sector which is forecast to see an 10.3% rise. There is also confidence the Automotive advertising spend will grow by 7.6% in 2022. Growth follows a 11.5% increase in 2021 and steep declines in 2020 of -15.9%. With pent up demand and a trend towards personal vehicles in how people want to travel post pandemic, there is confidence in the recovery of the Automotive sector. Looking further ahead, APAC ad spend is predicted to grow by 5.6% (vs 4.6% globally) in 2023 and 4.9% (vs 5.8% globally) in 2024 – exceeding growth before the pandemic (4.1% in 2019). Digital is forecast to increase its share of spend domination to 64.6% in APAC (vs 59.4% globally) in 2024. Of course, many factors contributing to the uncertain economic outlook could influence the predictions, from the evolution of the pandemic to supply chain issues, and dentsu recommend the industry keep a close eye on key economic indicators. India, Hong Kong and Vietnam will drive double-digit growth with rest of the region showing strong growth. How the coronavirus is impacting the advertising business as sports TV viewing evaporates and consumers stop spending

In what could be regarded as another big step towards achieve its mission of being the second largest agency group by end 2017 in India, International advertising firm <keyword id="6368370" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dentsu-Aegis-Network">Dentsu Aegis Network</keyword> (DAN) has acquired majority stake in <keyword id="1087523" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="fountainhead">Fountainhead</keyword> <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="entertainment">Entertainment</keyword>, which is a Mumbai-based <keyword id="2548233" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Digital-marketing-agency">digital marketing agency</keyword>. 
 
According to industry sources, the size of the deal is between Rs 300-400 crore. 
 Even after the merger, <keyword id="3105862" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brain-Tellis">Brain Tellis</keyword>, the co-founder and CEO of Fountainhead, will continue to lead the agency, but now Tellis will report into Ashish Bhasin, chairman and CEO of Dentsu Aegis Network South Asia, said officials. 
 
Fountainhead will retain its brand identity and work alongside other specialist units of DAN. 
 
The business daily revealed that psLIVE, DAN's existing experiential offering, will be merged with Fountainhead along with its 86 employees in India. 
 
Nick Waters, CEO of Dentsu Aegis Network Asia Pacific, said in a statement, "Fountainhead's reputation in the event and activation market, and their extensive experience in both music and sports marketing, complements and strengthens our experiential offering in one of the region's most exciting markets." 
 
Tellis established Fountainhead currently has offices in Delhi and Bengaluru, wherein more than 200 people are working. It has five brands--Fountainhead Events, Oranjuice Entertainment, Fountainhead Activations, Fountainhead Corporate Journeys and Fountainhead Digital--that delivers around 350 events annually.

The value of the title sponsorship could fall by 30% if <keyword id="54572" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="PepsiCo">PepsiCo</keyword> terminates its contract ahead of schedule as the <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> title sponsor raised concerns over the controversies and ethical issues that clad the name of the tournament now, experts say. A joint statement issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (<keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword>) and PepsiCo said the two were in discussions to work out a solution. 

	"Both parties will share it when ready," it said. IPL has been in the centre of a major spot-fixing controversy and two franchisees have been suspended from the tournament after a Supreme Court-appointed panel found their owners to be guilty of malpractices. 
 

	"We are very clear that we do not want to be associated with a controversyridden sport. However, as of now there is no decision to terminate the contract with IPL two years ahead of term. Discussions with BCCI are still on," a senior official at PepsiCo told ET. The company had paid Pepsi Rs 396.80 crore to bag the title sponsorship in 2013 for a fiveyear period which ends in 2017. 
 The official said PepsiCo was satisfied with the mileage it had derived from its association with the Twenty-20 tournament but Global Chairman <keyword id="6421975" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indra-Nooyi">Indra Nooyi</keyword> has made it clear that the company will only associate with ethical and clean sporting properties. PepsiCo had earlier terminated its contract with ace golfer Tiger Woods following an infamous sex scandal. 

	The cola maker can scrap its sponsorship if circumstances sullied the sporting event's reputation or the brand image of the sponsor because of its IPL association. However, this needs to be proved by the sponsor. Otherwise, the cricket board has the option of dragging the company to court. 
 

	In its statement, BCCI said it has assured PepsiCo that steps would be taken to address the concerns and it will work towards necessary solutions in the interests of the league as well as the company. Media planners and experts say that if a solution is not found and PepsiCo does indeed exit ahead of its term, it could push down pricing of IPL title sponsorship by as much as 30%. 
 

	"Prices of the IPL title sponsorship will go down by 25-30% (that) is my estimate. That's because of two reasons. The new sponsor will have to wipe out the very strong association PepsiCo had with IPL for three years. Besides, the new title sponsor will have only two years to leverage IPL," said Sam Balsara, chairman at media buying group Madison. 
 Ecommerce companies such as Paytm and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> could look at picking up the title sponsorship if Pepsi ends its deal. Shankar Nath, senior vice-president at Paytm, which is already the title sponsor for all international cricket matches to be played in India till 2019, said the company would evaluate the opportunity once there was more clarity after BCCI's meeting on October 18. "IPL is a good, stable property," he said. A top Snapdeal official, who did not wish to be named, said the company may consider the sponsorship option as IPL was still an interesting asset. 

	Ashish Bhasin, chairman &amp; CEO, South Asia, at Dentsu Aegis Network, said it won't be difficult to find sponsors. "It's more about the pricing. Going forward pricing of title sponsorship and also of other sponsorship and TV spots will depend on how the controversy around IPL is managed. The impact will get magnified if the controversy doesn't end quickly," he said. But Shailendra Singh, joint managing director at entertainment and sports marketing firm Percept, said no one in BCCI had made any effort to rebuild the IPL brand and no company would want to risk its image by getting involved with the tournament. 
 Companies willing to take an exposure to IPL could be the new ecommerce players looking for a quick hit to establish themselves, and the fact that it would possibly be for a shorter duration of only two years would help. IPL was hit by the spot-fixing and betting scandal in 2013, the first year of Pepsi's association with the tournament. At that time, Delhi Police had arrested three players — <keyword id="13418" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="S-Sreesanth">S Sreesanth</keyword>, Ashok Chandila and <keyword id="219674" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ankeet-Chavan">Ankeet Chavan</keyword> — on charges of alleged spot fixing. Later, Gurunath Meiyappan, the son-in-law of then BCCI president N Srinivasan, was also arrested along with Bollywood actor Vindu Dara Singh for their alleged involvement in betting.
