Cases of malaria are considerably higher so far when compared to last year. Delhi has reported 363 malaria cases till this month while the figure stood at 294 in the corresponding month in 2023. As per a PTI report, the total malaria cases last year were 426. Most malaria cases are reported from the West Delhi zone. As for Chikungunya, 43 cases have been reported so far. This is nearly double than last year when the figure stood at 23. A total of 65 cases of the virus were reported last year. The most number of chikungunya cases have been reported from the South Delhi zone this year. Last week, the city witnessed a spike of nearly 250 cases of dengue in seven days. As per Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) data from January till September 21, a total of 1,229 dengue cases have been reported in the city with the death of a 54-year old registered in Lok Nayak Hospital, a senior official at the hospital had confirmed. Delhi reported 651 cases of dengue this month. Last month, a total of 256 dengue cases were reported in the city. The number of cases has become three-digit since August, it said. Last year, Delhi reported 3,013 dengue cases till the corresponding month, a manifold increase from 525 in 2022. A total of 9,266 cases were reported in the entire year while 19 dengue deaths were registered in the city last year. In September alone, the figure stood at 2,141 cases in 2023. The most number of cases this year are reported from the Najafgarg zone at 180. In a week, 45 cases have been reported in the area, the highest of all the zones besides the south zone where an equal number of cases were reported this week. The non-MCD areas governed by other agencies like NDMC, Delhi Cantt, and Railways, reported 312 dengue cases to the total tally, as per the data. To enforce mosquito control laws, the MCD has issued over 1.14 lakh legal notices and 39,338 challans to those who allowed mosquito breeding on their properties. Repeat offenders have been fined Rs 24.82 lakh, and police complaints have been filed against 9,241 people who didn't follow the rules, as per the data. The civic body also plans to increase fogging operations at major upcoming public events like Dussehra and Durga Puja and step up inspections and anti-larval measures in areas with high mosquito populations to curb the infectivity of the virus. Delhi reports over 300 dengue cases in a week; malaria and chikungunya cases on the rise

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has attributed the significant <keyword id="20029550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rise" source="keywords">rise</keyword> in <keyword id="20233512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue-cases" source="keywords">dengue cases</keyword> in the city this year to an increase in the number of <keyword id="22375552" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="testing-centres" source="keywords">testing centres</keyword>, which has grown from 36 to 900 compared to last year, according to an official report. As of July 6, Delhi recorded over 256 dengue cases, which is nearly double of the 136 cases recorded in the corresponding period in 2023 and the highest since 2020, according to the report's data. In previous years, the number of dengue cases stood at 153 in 2022, 38 in 2021, and 22 in 2020. The highest number of dengue cases were recorded in the Najafgarh Zone, the report said. No deaths due to the vector-borne disease have been reported so far this year. Last year, 19 deaths occurred due to dengue, the second-highest since 2020. "The rise in the number of cases this year is because more testing centres have started collecting samples and reporting the dengue cases to the civic body. Until last year, there were about 36 testing centres. Now, this number has increased to 900 because of which the numbers appear to be inflated," a senior civic body official said. The peak season for dengue is yet to arrive in Delhi and the situation will call for urgent attention when the monsoon advances, providing a suitable atmosphere for <keyword id="21283114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mosquito-breeding" source="keywords">mosquito breeding</keyword> to increase significantly, the official said. Usually, it takes about 10-15 days for a larva to become an adult mosquito that spreads dengue. The MCD is taking various measures to curb breeding at the source, another official said. According to the report, in areas under the jurisdiction of other agencies like New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), Delhi Cantt and Railways, around 10 dengue cases were reported as of July 6. The report also shows data on other vector-borne diseases. The number of malaria cases reported until the end of last week stood at 90, while chikungunya cases were logged at 22. The MCD conducted over 1.8 crore house visits to check for domestic mosquito breeding and found breeding in over 43,000 houses, the report said. Rise in dengue cases due to more testing centres in city: MCD

While Delhi and many other states including Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal have seen a sudden spurt in <keyword id="64895" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue-cases" source="Orion">dengue cases</keyword> in the last couple of days, government data showed that the number of <keyword id="6360092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue" source="Orion">dengue</keyword> cases has recorded a significant rise in the last few years. Moreover, states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan witnessed the maximum number of cases of dengue during 2021 among all the states. Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan recorded 29750, 23389 and 20749 dengue cases respectively during 2021. Delhi also recorded a significantly higher number of cases at 13089 during the same year. A total of 1.93 lakh cases were reported from all across the country in 2021. Government data revealed that 2020 had witnessed a remarkably lower number of 44,585 cases probably due to the Covid related restrictions in most parts of India as against 1.57 lakh cases in 2019. This year, a considerable number of dengue cases have been reported from Delhi and many cities of Uttar Pradesh. As per reports, UP has so far registered over 2,200 dengue cases, with the state capital Lucknow reporting over 300 cases. Similarly, Delhi has also recorded nearly 1000 cases. Officials said that October can be the most vulnerable period for the spread of dengue in Delhi and recent spells of rain have only added to the woes. Recently, the Delhi government asked hospitals to reserve 10-15 per cent beds for patients of vector-borne diseases. Government data showed that 346 deaths were reported across the country due to dengue in 2021 as against 56 deaths in 2020 and 166 deaths in 2019. The central government intervenes whenever there is a sudden rise in dengue cases. Reports said that a six-member team has been sent to Uttar Pradesh very recently by the <keyword id="83655" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-Health-Ministry" source="Orion">Union Health Ministry</keyword> to collaborate with the state authorities in taking public health measures for dengue management in the districts of Firozabad, Agra and Etawah. The National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC) is the nodal agency under the umbrella of the National Health Mission for Vector Borne Diseases (including dengue) prevention and control in the country. The NCVBDC has issued multiple advisories to the States/UTs for detection and control of outbreaks, preparedness and capacity building to take effective measures for vector control, involvement of the non-health sector, ensuring availability of drugs, diagnostics, insecticides, equipment and to fill up the vacant positions of entomologists. Moreover, training has been imparted to doctors on case management and to entomologists on integrated vector control at the central and state level. As per a parliament reply on August 2, 2022, free diagnostic facilities through 769 Sentinel Surveillance Hospitals and 17 Apex Referral Laboratories have been made functional. 1.92 lakh IgM tests have been provided by the Centre. It said that the NCVBDC provides technical guidelines for prevention, control, and management of dengue cases in States/UTs. Dengue cases show a spike, October is the most vulnerable month

The hospitals across West Bengal, both public and private, are overflowing with <keyword id="6360092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue" source="Orion">dengue</keyword> patients. According to an official in the state health department, 800-900 cases are being reported on an average daily. This could send West Bengal to the top of the list among the states in the country where dengue cases have been reported, in just over a month. According to the figures released by the National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NVBDCP), West Bengal had reported only 239 cases till August 31. In the 40-odd days since, the number of cases in the state has surpassed 20,000, the state health department admits. Apart from Kolkata, most cases are from districts like North 24-Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Murshidabad, Siliguri and Darjeeling. "Lack of proper sanitation, clogged drainage systems, accumulation of rain water due to unplanned urbanisation are some of the reasons behind this spurt. There has certainly been some negligence on the part of civic bodies entrusted with monitoring the situation and combating the threat. Sufficient intervention was not carried out and efforts weren't made to prevent the accumulation of water near human settlements. The presence of cattle sheds, encroachments and the like in urban and semi-urban areas added to the mess," the official in the state health department said. There was hardly any activity by the civic bodies over the last fortnight due to Durga Puja celebrations across the state. State government offices -- including civic bodies -- have remained closed since October 1 and will open from Monday. Health officials hope that measures will be taken on a war-footing thereafter to prevent further spread as hospitals have started running out of space, despite opening temporary wards for the dengue patients. West Bengal's record hasn't been too good, so far as combating the disease is concerned. In 2015, it recorded fourth highest figures after Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. In 2016 and 2017, West Bengal was at the top of the list. No records were available for the next two years from the state. In 2020, West Bengal was again in second position after Punjab. Doctors say that more than the figures, people's suffering is what matters. Dengue cases in Bengal shot up by 20,000 in a month

The number of <keyword id="6360092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue" source="Orion">dengue</keyword> cases witnesses a sharp rise in September with more than 400 new infections being reported in the last week of the month. A total of 693 cases of dengue were reported last month till September 28, according to a report released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday. The city recorded a total of 525 dengue cases till September 21 this year while 412 fresh cases were reported in the week that followed, taking the tally of the vector-borne disease in the city to 937 so far this year, it said. In 2015, the city had witnessed a massive dengue outbreak, with the number of cases crossing 10,600 in October. It was Delhi's worst dengue outbreak since 1996. Of the 937 total cases recorded till September 28 this year, 75 were reported in August. It is also the highest number of dengue cases logged during the January 1-September 28 period since 2017, when the corresponding figure was 2,152. No death has been reported so far this year due to the disease. A total of 125 cases of malaria and 23 cases of chikungunya have also been reported this year in Delhi till September 28, the report said. The MCD has said that it has been conducting drives to check the spread of dengue. Amid a spike in dengue cases in the national capital, many people down with viral infection are exhibiting "overlapping symptoms" of Covid and the vector-borne disease, leaving both patients and doctors perplexed about the exact diagnosis. Cases of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria are usually reported between July and November, sometimes stretching till mid-December. Its symptoms include high fever, headache, rash and muscle and joint pain, which are quite similar to that of Covid which also includes fever or chills, muscle or body aches, fatigue and headache among others. In such a situation it has become difficult to ascertain whether a person suffering from fever, body ache and headache is Covid positive or not, doctors said. Amid the continuous spurt in dengue cases, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had recently said that a plan has been devised to combat the vector-borne disease. Last year, 9,613 dengue cases were recorded in the city, the highest since 2015, along with 23 deaths -- the maximum since 2016. According to the MCD report, the city recorded 23 dengue cases in January, 16 in February, 22 in March, 20 in April, 30 in May, 32 in June and 26 in July. According to the MCD report, breeding of mosquito larvae has been found at 1,30,544 households this year till September 28. Authorities issued 96,189 legal notices for mosquitogenic conditions, and 35,668 prosecutions were launched. In 2018, Delhi had reported 481 dengue cases during the January 1-September 21 period, according to the report. The figures in 2019, 2020 and 2021 were -- 282, 212 and 273, respectively. Ten deaths each were reported due to dengue in 2016 and 2017, four in 2018 and two in 2019. Delhi reports over 400 cases of dengue in a week, taking the tally to 937

Vietnam reports 260,000 dengue cases, 102 deaths

The increase in number of dengue cases, ahead of the monsoon season, has put <keyword id="6354750" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="health" source="Orion">health</keyword> officials in <keyword id="6357713" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh" source="Orion">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> on alert. Singh said that there is neither any medicine nor any vaccine for dengue and therefore, efforts should be made to prevent the mosquito bite. In all the noise around COVID-19 — the risks from malaria, dengue and chikungunya are ignored

Vivax, is not considered the deadliest strain of malaria. </li></ul>In the Southern states of Florida and Texas, cases of locally-spread malaria have been detected for the first time in around 20 years.Locally transmitted malaria — meaning that the people contracting the disease did not leave the country — has become a rarity in the US as a result of <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7808401/#:~:text=Improved%20sanitation%20and%20medical%20care,still%20exist%20in%20the%20USA." target="_blank" rel="noopener">public health measures</a> and the previous <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/malaria/about/history/elimination_us.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">widespread use of DDT.</a>But in Texas, the <a href="https://www.dshs.texas.gov/news-alerts/health-advisory-locally-acquired-malaria-case" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of State Health Services</a> confirmed Friday that a person working outdoors in Cameron County, Texas, contracted malaria locally. For this to occur, an anopheles mosquito — which represents multiple <a href="https://www.epa.gov/mosquitocontrol/general-information-about-mosquitoes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">species of mosquito in the US,</a> of which there are nearly 200 — would have to bite an infected traveler and then bite another person.According to the DSHS, although Texas sees about 120 malaria cases a year from international travelers, the last locally acquired case in Texas was detected in 1994. So far, no other cases in the state have been identified.About 1,400 miles away in Sarasota County, Florida, however, two more cases of locally transmitted malaria infections have been identified this year — one in May and one in June. The malaria identified is associated with the P. vivax parasite, according to a <a href="https://www.sarasotafl.gov/Home/Components/News/News/3269/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release from the city</a>. P. vivax malaria is considered <a href="https://www.cell.com/trends/parasitology/fulltext/S1471-4922(20)30074-X#secst0025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more benign than its</a> counterparts but can sometimes <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK538333/#:~:text=While%20Plasmodium%20falciparum%20is%20responsible,significant%20global%20morbidity%20and%20mortality." target="_blank" rel="noopener">lead to severe or fatal infections.</a> Experts who <a href="https://www.vox.com/science/2023/6/23/23771154/malaria-transmission-florida-texas-mosquitoes-risk-prevention-anopheles" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoke to Vox</a> said that while the cases were eyebrow-raising, there was no indication yet that this would be a widespread event.Dr. Photini Sinnis, the deputy director of the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute, told Insider that although locally-transmitted cases aren't often detected — and there may have been malaria cases that public health officials were unable to record in the past — there have been <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5513a1.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">156 locally transmitted cases</a> in the US since 1957 after the US mostly eradicated malaria.Sinnis explained that because the anopheles mosquito has never left the US, the risk of locally-transmitted malaria has never been zero. The real question is whether or not "this just a random event, like the other 63 outbreaks prior or is this going to now happen more and more often?" she said."I think we don't know, but as far as malaria is concerned, the mosquitoes are here," Sinnis said.The reason scientists are thinking about whether or not the US will see more cases like this is because, for years, health organizations have been warning that mosquito-borne and mosquito-transmitted diseases may begin to thrive in places they haven't before as tropical and subtropical climates move further from the equator. In April, the WHO warned that cases of diseases like dengue fever — an illness spread by two types of Aedes mosquitos — have already <a href="https://www.voanews.com/a/who-warns-climate-change-causing-surge-in-mosquito-borne-diseases/7043700.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">increased by millions over the last two decades</a>.States like <a href="https://wusfnews.wusf.usf.edu/environment/2021-05-14/florida-is-getting-hotter-and-wetter-according-to-new-climate-normals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Florida</a> and <a href="https://www.axios.com/2023/06/26/heat-wave-weather-nws-warnings-texas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Texas</a> are already feeling the heat of climate change, and Sinnis said that humid weather and areas that experience it are where mosquitos thrive. These emerging trends can't tell us exactly how mosquito-related illness could spread, she said. More research is needed for that."But I do think that scientists sort of raise the possibility that this could play out as such that there might be more transmission within the United States," Sinnis said.<h2>'We should be funding more public health responses'</h2>Because mosquitos inhabit humid areas near water, Sinnis said people who live in areas with these conditions should always be aware of the mosquitos near them and take precautions like wearing long-sleeved clothing or using mosquito repellents like DEET or lemon eucalyptus spray.They should also be <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/malaria/about/disease.html#uncomplicated" target="_blank" rel="noopener">aware of fever-like symptoms</a> — especially if they are immunocompromised — and let their doctor know if they are experiencing them. Although there are treatments for malaria, it needs to be caught and addressed early, she said."We have drugs and we're trying to make new ones but this is an underfunded area, right? Because it's a disease of mostly poor people," Sinnis said. "And we don't really fund the research much in the United States, but we have drugs that work and if it's caught early, people do not die."Beyond personal measures, local agencies and health departments that have seen cases have begun to target and kill mosquitos in the area, according to <a href="https://www.mysuncoast.com/2023/06/23/what-you-need-know-about-local-aerial-mosquito-spray-missions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">local station WWSB</a>. In Sarasota County, Florida, officials are <a href="https://floridaphoenix.com/2023/06/21/malaria-in-sarasota-manatee-area-triggers-broad-insecticide-response/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spraying insecticides</a> — a measure that could have effects on <a href="https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-science-and-assessing-pesticide-risks/human-health-issues-related-pesticides" target="_blank" rel="noopener">people's health</a> and <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2984095/#:~:text=Impact%20on%20environment&amp;text=In%20addition%20to%20killing%20insects,risks%20to%20non%2Dtarget%20organisms." target="_blank" rel="noopener">the environment.</a>Sinnis told Insider that more research and better funding will be needed to help public health institutions to invest in less harmful <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/malaria/malaria_worldwide/reduction/vector_control.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">solutions to getting rid of mosquitos</a> in the future. And at a time when scientists are questioning what mosquito-spread illnesses will look like in the future, this should be a priority."I do not think that our responses are necessarily what they should be," Sinnis said. "And I think we should be funding more public health responses."

The difficulty of recording rural cases, combined with strict public-health measures, may offer some explanation.</li></ul>At the start of the pandemic, few countries were more ripe for a major coronavirus outbreak than India.Not only is India the world's second most populous country, it's also one of the densest, with around <a href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EN.POP.DNST?locations=IN">1,200 people per square mile</a>. Cases there climbed steadily from April through September, reaching a peak of nearly 100,000 daily cases on September 16.Then something unexpected happened: India's daily cases plummeted from mid-September until February, with average weekly cases dropping by roughly a third each month. The nation is now reporting fewer than 11,300 daily cases, on average - around 8 per 1 million people, among the lowest per-capita rates in the world.India's health ministry has attributed this success to a few factors, including a robust testing and contact-tracing effort. But infectious-disease experts say the quick turnaround is puzzling.India only began administering coronavirus vaccines in mid-January, so it's probably too soon for vaccinations to affect transmission. Some public-health experts say India's strict mask mandates may have helped lower cases, but masks have been required there since April, so that don't fully explain why cases dwindled so dramatically in the fall."There are a lot of questions and lessons to be learned, and I think that we need to do a deeper dive into what they've done well," Dr. Krutika Kuppalli, an assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, told Insider.Kuppalli's previous research focused on barriers to medical care among women with HIV in southern India."I know from having worked and lived in India that they have a lot of challenges in terms of dealing with large populations that are in close quarters, infection control issues, hygiene issues, ventilation issues - all the things that we are concerned about in terms of how this disease spreads," she said.Kuppalli added that it's worth studying whether India's population may have unique genetic or demographic characteristics that make people less susceptible to symptomatic COVID-19 infection. It's also possible, she added, that coronavirus cases are simply hard to record in rural areas.<h2>Penalties for not wearing masks </h2><div type="image" title="india mask school" height="3100" width="4650" msid="80678829" hostid="261"></div>Widespread adherence to public-health measures may partly explain why India has gotten its outbreak under control. Several large cities and states there began requiring masks in public places in April, two months before the World Health Organization recommended face coverings for the general public.Since then, the nation's largest city, Mumbai, has levied fines against those who violate the rule. By October, Mumbai had <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/mumbai/since-april-bmc-fined-14207-people-for-not-wearing-masks-6618446/">collected a total of more than $70,000 in fines</a> from more than 14,000 people who'd failed to wear masks in public. By early December, Delhi had also issued around 500,000 mask fines, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/covid-19-was-consuming-india-until-nearly-everyone-started-wearing-masks-11609329603">The Wall Street Journal reported</a>. For the most part, Indians have been supportive of mask requirements: In an <a href="https://qz.com/india/1909711/indians-support-high-penalties-for-not-wearing-coronavirus-masks/">October survey</a> from social media platform LocalCircles (which included more than 15,000 responses across roughly 200 districts in India), nearly 90% of respondents said they were in favor of a mask mandate. About 40% said they would support increased penalties for those who didn't comply.The US, by contrast, has struggled to convince large segments of the public that masks are an effective tool. "The United States very much failed from a lack of national leadership, miscommunication, and a lack of community engagement. I think we can really boil it down to those three things," Kuppalli said, adding, "we still have people who don't believe the pandemic is real in this country."<h2>A focus on 'test, trace, isolate'</h2><div type="image" title="india contact tracing" height="3280" width="4928" msid="80678833" hostid="261"></div>Epidemiologists typically rely on a three-step strategy to contain a virus: test, trace, isolate.Though India's testing got off to a slow start, it has ramped up considerably since the summer. By August, the nation had <a href="https://www.who.int/india/news/feature-stories/detail/how-india-scaled-up-its-laboratory-testing-capacity-for-covid19">nearly 1,600 testing labs</a>, up from just 14 in February 2020. India is administering nearly 486,000 daily tests. Only two other countries, the UK and the US, are testing more.India's large population also worked to its advantage when it came to enlisting contact tracers.From March through April, tens of thousands of health workers <a href="https://science.sciencemag.org/content/370/6517/691">traced the contacts of more than 435,000 infected people</a> across two southern states, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The workers reached more than 3 million contacts, around 575,000 of whom had available COVID-19 test results.These efforts were made easier by a longstanding disease surveillance network that began monitoring <keyword id="8785701" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="COVID-19-cases">COVID-19 cases</keyword> in late January 2020.As of April, Indian residents could download the nation's contact tracing app, Aarogya Setu, to find out if they had been been within 6 feet of an infected person. Indian residents are asked to download the app if isolating due to a positive COVID-19 test and report any symptoms to a local surveillance officer.<h2>Possible immunity to new pathogens</h2><div type="image" title="India covid" height="3626" width="5439" msid="80678837" hostid="261"></div>India has indeed seen fewer COVID-19 deaths per million than many developed nations. As of Wednesday, 113 out of every million people in India had died of COVID-19, compared to nearly 1,500 out of every million in the US and 1,755 per million in the UK.India is now recording fewer than one daily death per million people.Kuppalli said India's rapidly falling cases raises another important question: "Are there things about this particular population, this ethnicity, that puts them at decreased risk?" An <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7444648/">August study</a> suggested that populations with a higher exposure to diverse types of bacteria - predominantly due to poor sanitation - might see fewer COVID-19 deaths per million, perhaps because of an acquired or innate immunity to new pathogens. This line of thinking isn't new: A <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1472979206000278">2006 study</a> found that developing countries may have a different "immunological experience" with tuberculosis than the US and Europe."Look at the average Indian: He or she has probably had malaria at some point in his life or typhoid or dengue," Sayli Udas-Mankikar, an urban policy expert at the Observer Research Foundation in Mumbai, recently <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2021/02/01/962821038/the-mystery-of-indias-plummeting-covid-19-cases">told NPR</a>. "You end up with basic immunity toward grave diseases."The idea remains a theory for now, however.<h2>Rural populations are harder to surveil </h2><div type="image" title="rural india coronavirus" height="3456" width="5184" msid="80678845" hostid="261"></div>The coronavirus spreads best in dense, crowded environments. That means countries like the US, where more than 80% of residents live in urban areas, face an uphill battle to contain the virus' spread.India, on the other hand, is less urbanized: Around 65% of Indian residents live in rural areas. Though the virus has undoubtedly reached India's rural population, the nation's cities have been particularly hard-hit. By May, <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/hpm.3047">nearly 80% of India's total COVID-19 cases</a> hailed from just 30 cities. A <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/delhi-news">January survey</a> found that 56% out 28,000 people sampled in Delhi tested positive for coronavirus antibodies.But Kuppalli said health trends among India's rural population are difficult to track.For one thing, rural areas are larger and more spread out. Many Indians living in these communities also lack internet access, which prevents them from plugging into the nation's surveillance network.Kuppalli also noted that it's difficult for patients who are sick in rural places to get to large urban hospitals because of transportation or financial issues. A <a href="https://www.smilefoundationindia.org/Media/rural-healthcare.html">2018 report</a> found that only one state-run hospital is available for every 90,000 people in India's rural communities. That could mean that India simply isn't recording as many rural cases.That too, is just a possibility, though. For now, Kuppalli said, "it's great that they've had this turnaround.""It's an opportunity for us to study this population," she added. The World Health Organization (WHO) lists mosquitoes as one of the <a href="https://www.who.int/neglected_diseases/vector_ecology/mosquito-borne-diseases/en/">deadliest animals on the planet</a>, since they're responsible for millions of deaths every year worldwide.Dengue fever alone is the leading cause of death in the tropics and subtropics, with up to 400 million people infected yearly, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/dengue/">according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)</a>.Disease-carrying mosquitoes are - for now - only found within certain regions that have the temperature ranges those insects need to survive and thrive. But as the planet continues to warm (four of the past five years have been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oceans-warming-faster-than-we-thought-2019-1">the hottest on record</a>), mosquitoes' ranges are growing. Until now, temperatures have restricted the bugs to habitat belts around the Equator; however, they're beginning to venture farther north and south. <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pntd.0007213">A new study</a> published today in the journal PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases forecasts how climate change is likely affect the range and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zika-virus-mosquitoes-and-global-climate-change-2016-2">distribution of some virus-carrying mosquitoes</a>."We know these bugs are gonna move, and so we looked at what's that going to mean for us," Sadie Ryan, a medical geography professor at the University of Florida and co-author of the new study, told Business Insider.The study results showed that by 2050, the number of new people at risk of exposure to these diseases will approach 500 million. If greenhouse-gas emissions continue to rise unabated, nearly 1 billion new people will be exposed to these disease-carrying mosquito species by the year 2080.<h2>The consequences of climate change for human health</h2>Ryan said her research team wanted to "give a tangible view of what the risks are to human health" as temperatures rise and insects are able to live in more places.So the study looked at future changes in the geographical distributions of two mosquito species that can transmit dengue fever, the chikungunya virus, and Zika: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus (the Tiger mosquito). <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">TT/GettyAs the climate warms, mosquitoes will venture farther from the tropics.</div></div></div>Scientists know that Ae. aegypti needs temperatures between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit to thrive, while Ae. albopitcus prefers temperatures between 68 and 85 degrees. So the researchers modeled how average temperatures would change in different parts of the world by 2050 and 2080, based on various greenhouse-gas emissions scenarios. They then used that data to highlight new areas where the two mosquitoes could transmit diseases.The results clearly showed that an increasing number of areas outside the tropics - and the people who live in those areas - will become vulnerable to mosquito-borne diseases within 60 years if greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise.The study noted that 6 billion people currently live in areas suitable for Ae. aegypti transmission for at least part of the year, and 6.3 billion people live in areas suitable for Ae. albopitcus (with significant overlap between the two populations).But by 2080 - in a "business-as-usual" scenario - an additional 1 billion people will be added to this at-risk group. <h2>Same diseases, new places</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Dorioconnell/GettyBy 2080, more than 1 billion people could be newly exposed to mosquito-borne diseases.</div></div></div>According to the study authors, northern areas like Europe, the US, and Canada can expect to deal with these mosquito-borne illnesses in the future. "Places like Europe, North America, and high elevations in the tropics that used to be too cold for the viruses will face new diseases like dengue," Colin Carlson, a co-author of the new study, said <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2019-03/gumc-1pw032119.php">in a press release</a>. "The leading edge [of the mosquitoes' range] is rising northward and will hit European populations that are historically dense," Ryan said.Interestingly, the authors found that a "business-as-usual" scenario would lead some areas in southwest Asia and west Africa to get too hot for Ae. albopitcus, reducing the number of number of people at risk from that species there.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Getty Images/Tom ErvinDifferent mosquito species have different optimal temperature ranges and transmit different diseases.</div></div></div>Ryan and her co-authors also noted that regions in which populations lack previous exposure to mosquito-borne diseases are particularly at risk for explosive outbreaks when new illnesses are introduced.The 2015 Zika virus outbreak in the Americas is a prime example of that. The virus - and its association with birth defects - <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/zika-virus">prompted the World Health Organization</a> to declare "a public health emergency of international concern" after the virus spread rapidly across the Americas, with as many as 4 million infections in 12 months.Read More: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zika-virus-mosquitoes-and-global-climate-change-2016-2">There's a worrisome problem at the heart of the Zika-virus crisis that no one is talking about</a><h2>It might be cheaper to tackle emissions than control mosquitoes</h2>Ryan hopes these study results will be seen "less as the doom and gloom of 'it's all getting worse,' but rather as data that gives us the opportunity to plan for the future."Limiting climate change would protect hundreds of millions of people from a new risk of viruses, the authors wrote. <a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/115/24/6243">Another recent study</a> came to a similar conclusion: It found that limiting the world's temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels could prevent 3.3 million dengue cases per year in the Americas alone, compared to a future with no emissions reductions. Currently, Ryan is also working to estimate the future spread of malaria under a similar model of climate change. Malaria is transmitted by female mosquitoes of the Anopheles species; in 2017 alone, the disease <a href="https://www.who.int/malaria/en/">caused 435,000 deaths</a> worldwide. "This model is just one tool in a great big tool box," Ryan said. "Now that we know what will happen under different scenarios, we have options on the table."Ryan said vector control - efforts to limit or eradicate insects that transmit diseases - isn't necessarily easier or cheaper than curbing greenhouse-gas emissions.
