It's super slim, portable, gorgeous, and powerful enough to handle most everyday tasks. But there was one critical area where it was lacking compared to its rivals - its screen.The MacBook Air has a 1366 x 768 resolution screen instead of a Retina display like Apple's more recent MacBook Pros.It made the MacBook Air somewhat of a tough sell considering you could get cheaper laptops that are almost equally light that come with gorgeous touch screens, like the new <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dell-xps-13-review-2015-2">Dell XPS 13.</a>But Apple's new razor-thin laptop seems to have eradicated that issue, at least according to early reviews of the device. It's 2304 x 1440-resolution screen and thin side bezels have gotten rave reviews from critics so far:<ul><li><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2015/04/09/2015-macbook-review/">Darrell Etherington from TechCrunch writes:</a> "The display alone is a big selling point on this MacBook, especially for those who've been making due with the standard resolution screens of existing MacBook Airs or older notebooks...Apple's display tech remains one of its crowning achievements, and in a device this small, with the minimal bezel and combined display/glass manufacturing technology, it makes a huge difference."</li><li><a href="http://www.theverge.com/2015/4/9/8372335/12-inch-macbook-review">Dieter Bohn of The Verge writes</a>: "But ignore those specs and just look at it: it simply puts the screen on the MacBook Air to shame... It's sharp and bright, and Apple also switched the bezels to black to match the rest of the Retina MacBook lineup. The laptop only comes in "Moonstone White," which has somehow managed to avoid being sullied by my preschooler's seemingly always dirty hands. The exterior textured, tactile pattern does an excellent job of keeping you from fumbling and dropping the device.The Chromebook operates using the Chrome OS, which is quite similar to Windows, but I've found it is less glitchy than my Windows devices. And, unlike Windows, instead of having to shell out another $100+ for Microsoft Office, you have instant access to Google Docs. I personally prefer Office for my daily work, but you can't beat how easy it is to share documents, collaborate with others, and access your work from any device with Google Docs.The main issue I ran into with Google Docs was figuring out how to use it offline, a must when you are in the air or on the road and don't have a hotspot. <a href="https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2486399,00.asp">PC Mag provides a few simple steps</a> for setting up Google Docs offline.Though my family is forbidden from commandeering this laptop for media streaming purposes in order to avoid the fate of the Chromebook 15, I have been known to use it to catch up on my shows. The 11.6" HD ComfyView Widescreen has a 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution (16:9 aspect ratio). "ComfyView" is simply Acer's fancy way of saying the matte screen is anti-glare. There are two built-in stereo speakers that tend to degrade in sound quality ever so slightly as you try to blast your jams. The laptop has HD audio support.One of the most impressive features of the Chromebook 11 is its battery life. I have used it for 10-hour sessions without charging it. And, when the time comes to charge the 3-cell lithium-polymer battery, it takes about two hours to get back up to 100%.For those of you into numbers and specs, I should tell you that the Acer Chromebook 11 features the Intel Celeron N2840 Dual-Core Processor. You can choose from 2GB of RAM or - for $10 more - you can get 4GB. There is 16GB of solid-state drive internal storage. The laptop has ports for USB 2.0, USB 3.0, HDMI with HDCP support, SD cards, and a headphone jack. And, the HD webcam has a 1,280 x 720 pixel resolution.Overall, if you're looking for an easy-to-use, compact laptop that can stream media, help you get some writing done while on the go, and is compatible with your Android devices and Google account, you can't go wrong with the Acer Chromebook. I can blog, stream video, and surf the web from anywhere with this compact $215 laptop

Jeff Dunn/Business InsiderThe Microsoft Surface Laptop.NEW YORK CITY - Microsoft has a new Surface laptop, and it's called the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-surface-laptop-2017-4" target="_blank">Surface Laptop</a>.And at first blush, it feels nice. That should be the case given how much Microsoft talked up the build quality of its new take on the traditional clamshell, but that premium feel did carry over in the short time I was able to play with the new Surface at the company's New York City event on Tuesday.The lid is covered in a smooth aluminum - that did seem to pick up some light smudges - but the whole device comes off as clean and solidly put together. It's not the absolute thinnest or lightest machine out there, but, at 14.5mm thick and 2.74 pounds, it's unlikely to encumber you out on the go. It also just looks great: The solid burgundy and dark blue tones are particularly striking in a way that should immediately stand out. That's really the best thing it has going for it.The trade-off is a lack of ports: You get a headphone jack, USB 3.0 port, and mini DisplayPort, and that's it. That's fine enough for a notebook aimed at college kids more than pros - photographers aside - but Microsoft's continued rejection of the increasingly popular USB-C isn't great.Jeff Dunn/Business InsiderThe alcantara fabric isn't as fuzzy as it might look, but it feels soft all the same.The cloth-like alcantara fabric that coats the palm rests and lays underneath the keyboard is probably the signature design feature here. If you've ever used one of the Surface Pro's <a href="https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Surface-Pro-4-Signature-Type-Cover/productID.340851500" target="_blank">pricier keyboard covers</a>, it's more or less that; I wouldn't say it's more luxurious than metal, but it's soft, and more notably it's different. It's one of those things that'll signify you're using a Surface, which is part of the point here. How well that alcantara will hold up over time is another question, but that's a question for the future.Likewise, it's too early to say how well the essentials may perform in the long-run. For what it's worth, the 13.5-inch touch display was bright, sharp, and responsive; the keyboard had enough travel and space to feel comfortable (unlike, for me, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/macbook-review-2016-4" target="_blank">Apple's MacBook</a>); and the trackpad was perfectly acceptable, if a bit stiff to click. I wasn't able to check out the speaker quality in such a noisy environment, but if nothing else, Microsoft's decision to plant them underneath the keyboard is clever. And the promised 14.5 hours of battery life will be great if it actually holds up.On the inside, the Surface Laptop starts with the latest Intel Core i5 chip, with an option for a stronger Core i7 chip (with boosted graphics) beyond that. You can get 4, 8, or 16 GB of RAM, and 128, 256, or 512 GB of SSD storage. My demo unit did feel speedy, but part of that is because it's running <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-windows-10-s-2017-4" target="_blank">Windows 10 S</a>, the lightweight variant of Windows 10 that Microsoft announced alongside the new laptop today.This is what's really going to determine whether or not the Surface Laptop is worth it: The laptop itself looks and feels great, but so do HP's Spectre x360 and Dell's XPS 13, both of which start around the same $999 price point.Jeff Dunn/Business InsiderIt's pretty thin!But whereas those laptops run an unhindered version of Windows 10, here you've got a Microsoft-ified alternative to Chrome OS. You're mainly running through Microsoft's Edge browser (for now), and you can only download apps from Windows' app store. If you try to download, say, Google Chrome from the web, you'll get a pop-up recommending you download Edge instead.To be clear: For a lot of people, including many college kids, that's still plenty. Chrome OS has shown that people can get by with just a web browser, Edge is getting better, and the Windows app store does have a good chunk of the essentials onboard. (Full-on versions of Microsoft Office are coming soon, too.) <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-windows-10-s-versus-windows-10-pro-whats-the-difference-2017-5" target="_blank">Windows 10 S looks virtually identical</a> to plain Windows 10 in function and aesthetics - you just can't download as much. And if it's anything like Chrome OS, it should get much more out of lesser hardware than its beefier sibling.Jeff Dunn/Business InsiderBut if you need the whole shebang, or you just don't want to pay close to $1,000 to be locked into Microsoft Land, then the Surface Laptop loses a bit of its shine. Microsoft's ace in the hole is that you can switch to the full Windows 10 for free until the end of the year - <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/devices/surface-laptop/tech-specs?ranMID=24542&amp;ranEAID=TnL5HPStwNw&amp;ranSiteID=TnL5HPStwNw-ISS2OIHdjYwSE083nWrX2g&amp;tduid=(c691e84571d0f898e48327eb072c4d59)(256380)(2459594)(TnL5HPStwNw-ISS2OIHdjYwSE083nWrX2g)()" target="_blank">it'll be $50 after that</a> - but that lowers the value a bit, particularly if you're using the entry-level model and its lesser RAM and storage. In that sense, the Surface Laptop is as much "Microsoft's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-chromebook-pixel-review-2015-4" target="_blank">Chromebook Pixel</a>" as it is "Microsoft's MacBook."Nevertheless, as a piece of hardware, the Surface Laptop feels like it belongs alongside the other top-end devices in the Surface series. It's got that "object of desire" feel going for it, and the lighter software load should help it get more out of what it's working with. Microsoft's new MacBook rival runs a brand new version of Windows 10 - here's what it's like

It's called, well, the Surface Pro, and it's the first refresh to the company's popular line of hybrid PCs since October 2015.But aside from the lack of a number in its name, there aren't many major differences to the new Surface Pro model.If anything, the most interesting shift is that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-cvp-yusuf-mehdi-on-new-surface-pro-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Microsoft is avoiding any talk</a> of the Surface Pro being a tablet in the first place; the company now refers to the device as a "versatile laptop" (rather than "<a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/devices/surface-pro-4/overview" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the tablet that can replace your laptop</a>"), nudging it alongside more traditional clamshells instead of in some niche category.Whatever you want to call it, the new model may not make it immediately obvious if Surface Pro 4 owners who've been patiently waiting for an upgrade should take the plunge right away.I was able to use the new Surface Pro for a short while prior to Tuesday's launch, so if you're on the fence, here's a quick rundown and what is and isn't new:<ul><li>The idea behind the new Surface Pro is exactly like its predecessors. It's still a big tablet running Windows 10 that you can connect to a keyboard and use like a laptop.</li><li>That means it's still lighter and easier to carry around than most full-size laptops. It's still not as comfortable on your lap as a traditional notebook. And Windows 10 still plays much nicer with desktop-style work than tablet-style apps. (Hence Microsoft's change in marketing.)</li></ul>Matt WeinbergerThe Surface Pro 4 tablet, for comparison's sake.<ul><li>The display is virtually identical to before. It's still 12.3 inches big, with a sharp resolution of 2736 x 1824 and a squarish 3:2 aspect ratio. The Surface Pro 4's screen was good, and this looks the same. Just don't expect any 4K video or shrunken-down bezels a la <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-laptops-you-can-buy-guide-2016-12/#its-aging-a-bit-but-the-dell-xps-13-continues-to-be-the-go-to-notebook-for-most-people-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Dell's XPS 13</a>.</li><li>Its corners are slightly more curved, but generally speaking the new Surface Pro looks and feels very similar to the Surface Pro 4. You'd likely have a hard time telling the two apart at first. It's not the flashiest device around, but its magnesium finish still feels smooth, study, and suitably high-end.</li><li>The new model is the exact same size as the Surface Pro 4: 11.50 x 7.9 x 0.33 inches. It's still huge if you look at it as a tablet, but not a big burden if you look at it like a laptop. Some of the new models are a hair lighter than before, but really not by much.</li></ul>Jeff Dunn/Business InsiderThe new Surface Pro.<ul><li>The main difference is that you can push the kickstand on the back of the new Surface Pro much further. Microsoft says this model can now lean back as far as 165 degrees. That doesn't make it any easier to use on your lap, but it could make it easier to use as a digital canvas, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-surface-studio-review-2017-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a la the Surface Studio</a>.</li><li>The other main difference is that two-entry level models are fanless. That means they should make less noise in operation than before. The little vents you'd see on the back of every Surface Pro 4 aren't around on the non-Core-i7 models here.</li><li>The chipset has gotten the expected bump, going from the 6th-generation Intel Core chips on the Surface Pro 4 to 7th-generation Intel Core chips here. The jump from "Skylake" to "Kaby Lake," as the they're called, isn't all that big, but it's a bit more efficient and powerful all the same. The integrated graphics have received the same generational update with them.</li></ul>MicrosoftThe Surface Pro 4.<ul><li>You still get an okay Core m3 chip with the cheapest model, then stronger Core i5 and Core i7 chips as you go up the price ladder. You'll get either 4 GB, 8 GB, or 16 GB of RAM, as well as 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB of storage.</li><li>The biggest technical improvement, if Microsoft's claims are true, should be battery life. The company says the new Surface Pro can get up to 13.5 hours of juice. It used to market 9 hours with the Surface Pro 4. Per usual, take the proclamation with a grain of salt until we can test further, but, at least with some models, the new Surface Pro should last longer than before.</li><li>The port situation, however, is exactly the same. You've still got Microsoft's proprietary, MagSafe-like charging port, a mini DisplayPort, one USB 3.0 port, a microSD card, and a headphone jack.</li></ul>Jeff Dunn/Business Insider<ul><li>That, notably, means there's no USB-C (or Thunderbolt 3) ports. Microsoft reps said they don't think the newer standard - which could theoretically let you use one cable for all your devices - is ready for prime time just yet, pointing to the fact that not all USB-C ports and cables support the same level of power. The company will release a USB-C dongle later in the year, however.</li><li>One thing that will be added is LTE support, which'll let some Surface Pro buyers connect to mobile internet on the go. This won't be available right out of the gate, though - Microsoft only says it'll release certain LTE models sometime later in the year.</li><li>Perhaps the most dramatic changes here are with the Surface Pen, which Microsoft says is four times as pressure-sensitive as the old model. So, it should be more precise and nuanced. The company says it's fine-tuned the Pen to be particularly smooth on the new Surface Pro - I saw a little lag in my pre-production unit - but in general it's still a tool for artists and designers more than the typical PC buyer.</li></ul>Jeff Dunn/Business InsiderThe new Surface Pen and Microsoft's Surface Dial tool. The Dial now works with the new Surface Pro, too.<ul><li>The catch is that the new Surface Pen doesn't come with your purchase, as the last one did. Instead, you can only buy it as a $99 accessory. That's on top of the keyboard, which has always been sold separately, and still starts at $129. Other keyboards made from alcantara fabric go for $159.</li><li>The Type Cover keyboard looks almost identical to those made for the Surface Pro 4, but is slightly clickier than before. It's nothing major, but it's something. Those keyboards, like the Pen, can work with the older model, though.</li><li>All of this is still pricey. The new Surface Pro starts at $799, just like the last one, but only comes with a Core m3 chip, 4 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. Everything starts shipping on June 15.</li><li>The best configuration for most is likely the $1,299 model, which has a Core i5 chip, 8 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of storage. Add the keyboard on top of that, and you're up around $1,420. There are decent 2-in-1s and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-laptops-you-can-buy-guide-2016-12/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">great standard laptops</a> that go for less than that, so you're still paying a bit for the brand.</li></ul>Jeff Dunn/Business InsiderThe new Type Cover keyboards for the Surface Pro. There's no grand rethinking that fixes the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/huawei-matebook-review-windows-tablet-pc-hybrid-2016-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2-in-1's fundamental problems</a>, so if you have a Surface Pro 4 that's still kicking fine, there's little here that immediately screams "drop everything and buy me."If the time comes, though, the big upgrades will likely be in battery life and the lack of noise with the fanless models. If you love the Pen, the upgraded stylus and more flexible hinge should help, too.
