<ul><li>For the last four months, the residents of Delhi have been either stuck in never-ending traffic or walked out of closed metro stations; or looking for ways to keep their children engaged thanks to unexpected school closures. </li><li>All this is happening in the wake of protests, violence, gunfire and a lot more that is stressing out the national capital. </li><li>Here are all the reasons that Delhi is protesting and suffering for, at the same time. </li></ul>For the last four months, the residents of Delhi have been either stuck in never-ending traffic or walked out of closed metro stations; or looking for ways to keep their children engaged thanks to unexpected school closures. The era of protests started much before the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) issue raged on. In early November, students started it as Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) hiked hostel fee. Later, the winter session of the Parliament has left students and citizens alike taking to the streets protesting the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/bullets-glass-and-stones-fly-all-over-north-east-delhi-killing-5-and-injuring-100/articleshow/74294273.cms">Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)</a>. Recently, depositors of scam-hit PMC Bank staged a protest outside RBI in Delhi asking the banking regulator to take action. Moreso, the victims who saw their savings vanish also said that they would take inspiration from ‘Shaheen Bagh’ protests. Looks like Delhi is not falling short of issues to take to streets about. While most of the above-mentioned issues are resulting in strife across the country, no city is as affected as Delhi which has become the hotbed. Adding to that, most protests are taking a violent turn, and random incidents of gun shots fired by miscreants is not helping Delhi-ites who are already skittish thanks to pollution spikes and inconsistent weather. The residents are unable to keep up a routine either as untoward incidents have been keeping adults from work and children from schools. There have been at least three such incidences where the schools were shut in Delhi. Two months ago, the massive protests against CAA at the Jamia Millia Islamia University had led to closure of schools in South Delhi. And it hasn’t gotten any better since that day. Even today (February 25), the schools will remain shut in the North East Delhi as the intelligence agencies suspect riots in the area. ADB compiled the data for 278 cities using night-time lights images from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, grid population data from LandScan Datasets of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and trip routes from Google Maps.  As of July 2013, <keyword id="6373156" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Highways">national highways</keyword> account for 79,116 km, connecting all major cities and state capitals. <ul><li>The <keyword id="6355014" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-high-court">Delhi High Court</keyword> suggested that India’s national capital use drones to monitor water logged areas of the city to reduce traffic congestion and conduct water harvesting. </li><li>In Mumbai, the <keyword id="66416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Western-Railways">Western Railways</keyword> are also using drones to monitor train tracks that are prone to flooding. </li><li>The government will use contractors to deploy camera drones, which will send back pictures from areas deemed vulnerable to <keyword id="52295" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="waterlogging">waterlogging</keyword> and flooding. </li></ul>Every year the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-mystery-of-indias-erratic-monsoon-can-be-found-in-the-indian-ocean/articleshow/69215027.cms">monsoon rolls in</a> and India’s major cities, Mumbai and Delhi, are left flooded and water logged in the aftermath. Underpasses are submerged, potholes turn into mines that cars have to navigate through; and lack of drainage systems turns roads into swimming pools. This year, the <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/delhi-high-court-suggests-use-of-drones-to-identify-water-logging-sites-in-city-during-monsoon-2231843.html">Delhi High Court</a> suggested that the city rope drones to identify and keep an eye on the areas in the city that are vulnerable to excessive water collection. This will help take care of traffic congestion as well as water logging, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/drone-cams-to-help-wr-stay-on-track-during-rains/articleshow/69299444.cms">The Western Railways</a> in Mumbai too has learnt lessons from last year. It has already contracted drones to keep an eye on the Virar-Nalasopara area, which is prone to water logging. Technology vs the monsoon Drones are already used to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mumbai-must-brace-for-floods-this-week-says-a-private-weather-forecaster/articleshow/70029004.cms">predict</a> weather patterns and rainfall. But, this is the first time that the governments are using drones for traffic surveillance and keep a check on water logging. In Delhi, the two-judge bench of Justice GS Sistani and Justice Jyoti Singh said, "We have no hesitation in saying that all the departments would cooperate with each other to ensure that citizens are not inconvenienced during the coming monsoon." The contractors selected by the government will deploy drones with cameras to areas that are known to be vulnerable, and send images back to the data collection point. The operators at the data centers will then decide whether or not there is a risk of water logging at the moment and plan the next action. Before deploying any drones, the police has to approve the use of air space. So far, the Western Railways has only gotten permission for the Virar-Nalasopara area even though other stretches like Frant Road, Prabhadevi, Dadar and Bandra-Khar are also flood prone areas. Too much water or not enough In Delhi, the monsoon is a double-edged sword. There’s waterlogging, on the one hand, and a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/every-household-in-india-will-get-water-supply-by-2024-under-the-jal-jeevan-mission-says-nirmala-sitharaman/articleshow/70086396.cms">shortage of water</a>, on the other. The Delhi High Court has suggested that the city use the opportunity of monsoons to harvest water in water clogged areas, to hit two birds with one stone. The Indian Court took up the issue of water logging on its own, to point out how the resulting traffic congestion leads to loss of time. Drones are going to help unclog India’s water logged cities this monsoon

<keyword id="6385438" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="heavy-rains">Heavy rains</keyword> lashed parts of the national capital today leading to waterlogging and traffic jams in many areas at several places, Gurgaon being the most affected. 
 
The mercury, however, settled at the normal level. The maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 34.7 and 26.5 degrees Celsius respectively, both normal for this time of the year, according to the MeT Department. 
 
However, vehicular movement was affected across the city, including at ITO, Vikas Marg, South Extension, Khanpur, Mahipalpur, Hari Nagar, IIT crossing, Nehru Place, Yusuf Sarai Market and Munirka. 
 
Traffic also crawled at various major intersections such as Laxmi Nagar, Kashmere Gate, Dwarka, Dhaula Kuan, Sarai Kale Khan, Moolchand, Karkarduma, Rajghat, Kalindi Kunj. 
 
Heavy traffic and bottlenecks were also witnessed on road stretches from Punjabi Bagh flyover to Rajouri Garden flyover, Mandi House to W-Point, Baraf Khana, Minto Road, Leela Palace and on Meerabagh Outer Ring Road. 
 
Meanwhile, Gurgaon saw waterlogging at a number of key intersections, including Hero Honda Chowk, Sohna Road, Manesar, Udyog Vihar, old Gurgaon Road and a few areas in New Gurgaon.

Heavy rains cripple Delhi, bring Gurugram to a complete standstill

<ul><li>Mumbai is now the most car-congested city in India with 510 cars for every kilometre. </li><li>Car density in Mumbai is five times more than that of New Delhi. </li><li>Pune, Kolkata, Chennai are among the top five most ‘car congested’ cities after Mumbai. </li></ul>Narrow roads and lack of parking regulation have all contributed to turning India’s financial capital Mumbai into the most car-congested city in the country. Mumbai’s car density rose by 18% in the last two years with 510 cars for kilometers of road, Times of India reported. The density is five times higher than that of New Delhi, which is also struggling with longer traffic jams and lower Air Quality Index, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/mumbais-car-density-5-times-that-of-delhi/articleshow/68553387.cms?from=mdr">reported</a> the Times of India. Other cities struggling with the problem of high car congestion include Pune with 359 cars per kilometre, followed by Kolkata with 319 cars per km and Chennai with 297 cars per km. The primary reason behind car-congestion is insufficient road space. The private car population of Mumbai is less than a third of Delhi but it has only 2,000km of road in comparison to 28,000 km road space in Delhi. The under-construction Mumbai metro network adds to the problem. There were only 430 cars per km in mid-2016, according to Maharashtra transport ministry data, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/mumbais-car-density-5-times-that-of-delhi/articleshow/68553387.cms?from=mdr">reported the Times</a> of India. However, the government <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/mumbai-news/mumbai-metro-work-causes-traffic-bottlenecks/story-yARZ73LiWSpMYFgfiKLTeM.html">expects</a> traffic to ease once the Metro project finishes by 2021. In mid-2016, car density in Mumbai was 430 cars per km, which has now gone up to 510, This has taken the total number of registered private cars to 1 million on city roads, roughly 28% of the total vehicular population in the city, which stands at 3.6 million, said the report citing an official. Nearly half the road space is occupied by private cars of all types including SUVs which is why the average speed on the Western Express highway is limited to 10kmph during peak hours. There is an urgent need to set up a parking authority which will overlook parking problems in the city and free up 50% roadspace in the city, said the reporting citing an official. The transport commissioners in the past have suggested people to using public transportation system but there’s little progress on it. Mumbai is now the most car-congested city in India: Report

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/National-Green-Tribunalclears-Art-of-Living-event-with-Rs-5-Crore-fine/articleshow/51330838.cms">World Culture Festival</a>, 20,000 weddings and another event by a spiritual group have led to traffic snarls in Delhi-NCR. 
 
People going to offices from Delhi to Noida faced bumper-to-bumper traffic as final preparations for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=sri+sri+ravi+shankar">Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s</a> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=art+of+living">Art of Living</a> event, at banks of River Yamuna, led to traffic jam. 
 The matter is going to get worse in the evening when the <keyword id="3626730" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Culture-festival">World Culture Festival</keyword> will kickstart and so will the 20, 000 weddings in the city. 
 
The police have issued advisory and asked people to avoid major roads, including the Ring Road stretch in south Delhi, the highway, the Noida Link Road, areas near the Akshardham temple and Mayur Vihar in east Delhi. 
 
People have also been advised to take public transport and avoid going out between 12 noon and 11 pm. 
 
Meanwhile, nearly 1,700 personnel will be regulating traffic for World Culture Festival.
