<keyword id="19900881" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="keywords">Delhi</keyword> seems to have been dealt a bad hand this year as a never-ending heatwave gripped the national capital first, followed by a water shortage crisis spurred by an increased demand for the essential commodity. These things have already ballooned into political issues and the city has been in desperate need for some relief. Fortunately, relief of some sort is here. While the ongoing rainy spell isn’t going to fully solve Delhi’s water shortage or the settle matters between the Haryana and Delhi governments, it is a start. Between January 1 and June 26, the national capital has seen less than 20 mm of rainfall, resulting in a rainfall deficiency of 61%. To make matters worse, there were whispers of a delayed monsoon progression over Delhi. Had this come true, it might’ve been the last straw for heat-stricken Delhiites and the parched landscape. However, it seems like things started to look up for the residents of Delhi when cloudy skies rolled into the city on Wednesday. Prodded by a western disturbance, rains finally began to drench Delhi last evening. In the evening, 2.3 mm, 1.3 mm and 1.3 mm of rain were recorded in Palam, Aya Nagar and Ridge, respectively. The icing on Delhiites’ cake is that the monsoon is just around the corner too! The monsoon has reached the threshold of Delhi-UP. On Wednesday, pre-monsoon rain fell in many areas of UP, including Ayodhya. As per the India Meteorlogical Department’s indications, the southwest monsoon is expected to enter Delhi by the end of this week, around June 29-30. Given these projections, the national capital and its surrounding regions can expect moderate to heavy rains (up to 115.5 mm) accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds will continue over the next seven days. Accordingly, a yellow watch has been issued over Delhi-NCR for the forecast period so as to urge locals to ‘be updated’ about the weather conditions. Meanwhile, Delhiites are currently battling the scorching heat, and there have been nine heatwave days in June so far, while there was not a single heatwave day during the same period in 2023 and 2022. Although Delhi has got some relief from the heat compared to earlier, its daytime temperatures have stubbornly remained two notches above-normal in spite of the rains. The good news is that the city’s maximum temperature is expected to gradually drop by a whole 4-5 degrees in the next few days and touch 34°C.

And when the hot winds continue till night, dinner is not the best option either. And some eateries say the number could be closer to 40 per cent. Staring at empty tables and staggering losses, Rahul Arora, the owner of The Big Tree Cafe in Gurgaon, is one of them. The USP of his restaurant as the name suggests is al-fresco dining experience. It thrives on that for a good part of the year. "Typically, we do see a slight reduction in footfalls during the hotter months, but this year, the decline has been more pronounced due to the extreme temperatures. This has had a substantial impact on our business, affecting both our revenue and the overall dining experience that we pride ourselves on," Arora told PTI. "We have suffered a huge 40 per cent drop in business due to the record breaking sweltering heat," he said. Temperatures in and around Delhi have hit all time highs this summer. On May 29, the day's maximum temperature of 46.8 degrees Celsius, recorded at the primary weather station Safdarjung Observatory, was a 79-year high. It broke the previous record of 46.7 degrees Celsius, registered on June 17, 1945. In Najafgarh area, temperatures soared even higher. According to industry insiders, lunch hours are the worst hit with usual office goers and trusted shoppers preferring to stay indoors. Besides, true-blue foodies are also ditching their weekly dine-outs and preferring to stay in. The visible drop in footfalls in big market hubs such as Connaught Place are a problem, said Manpreet Singh, treasurer of the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) and owner of multiple <keyword id="19980908" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="restaurants" source="keywords">restaurants</keyword>, including Zen and Fujiya. "Usually, even in summer, people during the afternoon would come out to shop and then to take a break they would head to a restaurant, where they would rest, have a cooler or take a bite. This has not been the case this year... There has been a 25 per cent drop in business in general," Singh told PTI. Hoping to temper the heat effect, restaurants are throwing in attractive discounts, recalibrating menus and enhancing outdoor cooling systems with mist fans and additional shaded areas. For instance, casual dining chain Anardana is offering a refreshing plant-based summer soiree, featuring delicacies made of seasonal ingredients and cool mango beverages at its multiple outlets to beat the heat. "This year's unprecedented heatwave has significantly impacted footfall, particularly at lunchtime...," said Shruti Malik, founder of Anardana. For those staying in, ordering out is the option. And while home deliveries have assuaged to some extent the concerns of restaurant managements, food delivery agents are facing the heat. As they zip through the streets of Delhi-NCR, the young men - and some women - say they face a torrid time, sweating under their helmets in the blistering heat for a modest income - earning as low as Rs 40 for a 10 km ride - and the occasional tip. A 36-year-old who makes his living delivering food says doing so between 11 am to 3 pm a "living nightmare". "We have to stop multiple times for shade. We can't even see our mobile screen for maps because the sun is so bright. A wet handkerchief on my head, beneath my helmet is all that I do to keep myself cool during the rides," he said on the condition of anonymity. Of course, he added, there are no bonuses for the summer. In an unusual request, food aggregator Zomato recently urged customers to avoid ordering during peak afternoon hours amid the heatwave. The appeal, which was sent out as an X post, sparked a debate, where some appreciated the company's concern while others offered alternative solutions to the problem. Rushabh Jhaveri, founder of Recipe Cup, also a food aggregator platform, commended Zomato's initiative but said a more nuanced approach, one where the company prioritises delivery partners while ensuring a smooth customer experience, would be more beneficial. His suggestions include "incentives for delivery partners during peak afternoon hours and encouraging customers to place pre orders during morning and evening hours to avoid extreme afternoon heat". It's not all bad for the food business if located in the cool refuge of air-conditioned malls. The negative impact of drop in footfalls in the afternoons has been mitigated by the rise in evening footfalls, said insiders. So, Birch at Netaji Subhash Place's Pacific Mall, Harajuku Tokyo Cafe at Saket's Select Citywalk Mall or Bira 91 Taproom, which has outlets in different malls, are among the outlets which have registered a "significant increase" in evening and nightlife sales. "The heatwave has not disrupted our business. On the contrary, we have witnessed the best May ever. And we are looking at a stellar June. Most of our outlets are in malls, and people are spending a lot of time in malls to take respite from the heat. This is helping our business," said Rahul Singh, senior vice president, pubs, at Bira 91.

Restaurants in Delhi-NCR face the heat as summer business drops by up to 40 per cent

Dense fog and cold weather conditions continue to hamper train movements to and from the national capital, with two dozen long-distance trains running behind schedule by up to eight hours or more. According to Northern Railways, around 24 long-distance trains to <keyword id="19900881" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="delhi" source="keywords">Delhi</keyword> were delayed on Thursday due to fog and poor visibility conditions. The list includes the Gaya-New Delhi Mahabodhi Express (12397) train, which was running eight hours late. Similarly, the Puri-New Delhi Purushottam Express (12801), Katihar-Amritsar Express (15707), Bhubneshwar-New Delhi RajdhExpress (22811), and Bhubneshwar-New Delhi Duronto (12281) were delayed by over 5 hours. Manikpur-Nizamuddin Exp (12447), Kamakhya -Delhi Jn Brahmputra Mail (15658), Amritsar-Mumbai (12904), Chennai-New Delhi Express(12621), Vasco-Nizamuddin Express(12779), Ambedkarnagar-Katra Express (12919), Banaras-New Delhi Express (12559), Bhagalpur-Anandvihar Express (12367), Azamgarh-Delhi Jn Kaifiyat Express(12225), Prayagraj-New Delhi Express(12417), and Rewa-Anandvihar Express (12427) were also delayed by one to fours hours, the railways said. The mercury dipped to 4.4 degrees Celsius in the national capital on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. As per the IMD, Lodhi Road recorded a minimum temperature of 4.4 degree Celsius, Safdarjung recorded 4.4 degree Celsius, while Ayanagar, Ridge and Palam areas of the national capital recorded 5.1, 5.2 and 5.9 degree celsius. Low visibility due to the dense fog was reported from several areas of the city, such as Brigadier Hoshiyar Singh Road, Anand Vihar and India Gate. The visibility recorded at Delhi's main weather station at Safdarjung was 50 metres at 5:30 am. It was 25 metres at Palam, the <keyword id="19929812" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="met-office" source="keywords">Met Office</keyword> said. According to the IMD, 'very dense' fog is when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres, 51 and 200 metres is 'dense', 201 and 500 metres 'moderate', and 501 and 1,000 metres 'shallow'. Delhi's cold snap strains power grids, threatens homeless and delays trains

After witnessing the coldest of the season so far on Friday, the national capital may experience the chilliest day in November in 14 years on Sunday, officials of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) told IANS. Kuldeep Srivastava, scientist at IMD and Head, Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC), informed that cold winds coming after snowfalls in the hills could bring the mercury down to 7-degree Celsius on Sunday. "The minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to further reduce to 7-degree C and 24-degree C on Sunday, respectively," he said. On November 29, 2006, the minimum temperature in the national capital had dipped to 7.3-degree C. "As the wind direction continues to be north-westerly, cold winds are coming in from Jammu and Himachal Pradesh, which have received snowfall. Besides, clear skies in the day is causing the heat to dissipate quickly and make the nights cooler than usual," Srivastava explained. However, he also forecast that the temperature is expected to rise in the next three-four days before dropping again after November 27. "Western disturbance and change in wind direction will cause the rise in temperature," Srivastava added. The minimum temperature in the national capital had dropped to 7.5 degrees Celsius on Friday morning, five notches below normal for this time of the year. On Thursday, the city had recorded a minimum temperature of 9.4-degree C. In 2017, the minimum temperature had dipped to 7.6-degree C in the last week of November. IMD data showed that the average normal minimum temperature is 12.9-degree C for this time of the year. Delhi even saw its coldest October in 58 years this time with an average minimum temperature of 17.2-degree C. The lowest temperature recorded last November was 11.4-degree C, while in 2018 it was 10.5-degree C. The IMD is likely to declare a cold wave on Saturday if the temperature remains five degrees below normal. Meanwhile, the city's air quality index fell to the "poor" category on Saturday with a reading of 252. New Delhi may face the coldest Sunday of November this week, according to the IMD

Delhi's temperature dropped to 3.9 degrees, the lowest of the season

Delhi's air quality deteriorated on Monday morning but remained in the "poor" category, while 14 of its 38 monitoring stations recorded "very poor" air quality, government agencies said. According to Central Pollution Control Board(CPCB) mobile app, SAMEER, the city's air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 281 on Monday morning. Delhi's air quality remains in 'poor' category as the national capital faces its coldest November in 17 years

A cold wave gripped Delhi on Monday as the minimum temperature dropped to 6.3 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal and the lowest in the month of November since 2003, according to the India Meteorological Department. On Sunday, the national capital had recorded a minimum of 6.9 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 24.2 degrees Celsius, the lowest day time temperature so far this month. "The Safdarjung Observatory which provides representative data for the city, recorded a minimum of 6.3 degrees Celsius, which is Delhi's lowest minimum temperature in the month since November 2003, when the city recorded a minimum of 6.1 degrees Celsius," Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the IMD's regional forecasting centre, said. The mercury dropped to 6.4 degrees Celsius at the Lodhi Road weather station, he said. For the plains, the IMD declares a cold wave when the minimum temperature is 10 degrees Celsius or below and is 4.5 notches less than normal for two consecutive days. "However, for small areas such as Delhi, a cold wave can be declared if the criteria is fulfilled even for a day," Srivastava said. Delhi had recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 11.5 degrees Celsius last year, 10.5 degrees Celsius in 2018 and 7.6 degrees Celsius in 2017 in the month of November. The all-time record for the lowest minimum temperature in November is 3.9 degrees Celsius recorded on November 28, 1938. Srivastava said icy cold winds blowing from snow-laden western Himalayas have led to a dip in the mercury. However, the minimum temperature will rise by two to three degrees Celsius in the next four to five days under the influence of a fresh Western Disturbance. The minimum temperature this month, barring on November 16, has remained 2-3 degrees Celsius below normal in the absence of a cloud cover, according to IMD officials. Clouds trap some of the outgoing infrared radiation and radiate it back downward, warming the ground. The month of October was the coldest in 58 years in the national capital. The mean minimum temperature in October this year was 17.2 degrees Celsius, the lowest since 1962, when it was 16.9 degrees Celsius.  With temperatures dropping to minus 6.5 degrees Celsius, Srinagar recorded the coldest night ever. The hill station of Gulmarg recorded a night temperature of -7.8 degrees on December 29 while the temperature was -10. 2 degrees in Pahalgam.

 Drass, a small town situated 60 km from Kargil, was freezing too as the mercury dipped to minus -28.8 degrees Celsius. In Srinagar, the fringe of the Dal lake was frozen and the boatmen had to cut ice to navigate their boats. Himachal records temperature below freezing point

 Large parts of Himachal Pradesh reeled under severe cold on December 30 with the minimum temperature staying below freezing point.  The minimum temperature of Patna city plummeted to 6.8 degrees Celsius. Gaya was the coldest place in the state with a low of 5.3 degrees Celsius. In Bhagalpur and Purnia, the minimum temperatures settled at 7.3 degrees and 6.8 degrees, respectively. Meanwhile, coldwave conditions intensified across the state due to a spell of chill and fog, according to the Patna Meteorological Centre.
