The update includes new parental controls, with a range of features that can be enabled with a vehicle PIN, the reports said.That reportedly includes something called "Night Curfew," which could make it easier for Tesla parents to enforce their teenagers' bedtimes. The new feature apparently sends notifications to the Tesla mobile app when a vehicle is driven past a set curfew time, the reports said.For parents who worry their kid could be taking advantage of the extra zip and high top speed possible with a Tesla, there are also said to be new controls that give parents the ability to set a maximum speed limit and reduce acceleration.If that sounds a bit familiar, you might remember that Tesla already has a similar option with "Valet Mode," but the latest update would allow parents to set limitations for other drivers, according to the reports. Parents would also be able to limit the acceleration to "Chill," which restricts the EV's horsepower and torque, the reports said.Other features within the parental controls reportedly include the ability to prevent a driver from disabling the speed limit and collision warnings, or automatic emergency braking.While the rumored update could be helpful for parents trying to catch their teens sneaking out, it could also be useful for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-owner">Tesla owners</a> who rent out their vehicles or lend them to others.If and when "Night Curfew" and the other parental controls are released publicly, they'll add to the other features that help Teslas <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-features">stand out from other cars</a>. In December 2023, 4,97,80,240 (4.97 crore) bottles were sold from 635 vends. According to the data, 24,00,726 (24 lakh) liquor bottles were sold on New Year's Eve (December 31) -- the highest single-day sales during December 2023. December 31, 2022, witnessed sales of 20,30,664 (20.30 lakh) bottles -- also the highest single-day sales figure for that month. The second highest sales in December 2023 were recorded on Christmas Eve (December 24) when 19,42,717 (19.42 lakh) bottles were sold. On the same day in 2022, the data showed that 14,69,357 (14.69 lakh) bottles were sold. The data also showed that 17,79,379 (17.79 lakh) liquor bottles were sold on December 30, 2023, against 14,66,353 (14.66 lakh) on the same day in 2022. In 2023, the lowest sales were recorded on December 5 when 12,84,222 (12.84 lakh) bottles were sold against 13,81,531 (13.81 lakh) on the same day in 2022. In 2022, the lowest sales were seen on December 4, with 9,03,835 (9.03 lakh) bottles sold. Sales of liquor bottles breached the 10-lakh every day in December 2023.

It's been edited for length and clarity.My wife Julie and I have partied in Vegas, ventured off to a friend's winery in Iowa, and on occasion hunkered down on our couch in front of the TV at home in Colorado, but there's nothing quite like a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/photos-show-abandoned-floors-times-squares-new-years-building-2019-11">New Year's Eve in Times Square</a>.At the same time, standing out in the cold, fighting a crowd for hours, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-years-in-times-square-were-all-wearing-diapers-2014-12">wearing an adult diaper</a> is not my idea of a celebration, so I decided to research a more comfortable alternative. I started researching, at the end of 2022, when a high school exchange student from Uzbekistan, whom we hosted for eight months, said her dream was to visit New York for New Year's Eve.A Google search<a target="_blank" href="http://www.balldrop.com"> led me to Balldrop.com,</a> a website that features a variety of ticketed New Year's Eve events in New York City. I soon learned most of the parties only accommodated guests 21 and older. Since the exchange student who we were hosting was only 18 years old we needed to find a party catering to all ages.It soon became clear the best <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/people-spending-hundreds-dollars-new-year-ball-drop-chain-restaurants-2023-12">choice for us was Applebee's.</a> All of this, of course, came at a price. Our three tickets, which were the least expensive option, cost $699 a piece. After taxes and service charges the total came to just over $2,500.<h2>In 2022, I spent New Year's Eve at Applebee's</h2>Many of the other New Year's Eve festivities, despite their high ticket prices, only offered a televised streaming of the ball drop or a view from a window or terrace.We figured if we were making the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-traveling-to-new-york-city">trip to New York City</a>, specifically for this reason, we should do whatever we could to get as close to the action as possible. Applebee's was not only family-friendly and open to all ages but, barring any unforeseen security issues, all ticket holders were escorted to the street and granted access to a dedicated area behind barricades for a live view of the ball drop.<h2>We bought the cheapest seats, but they were the best</h2>For that price, we each had a window-facing high-top counter seat in the bar area of the Applebee's on 50th Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue, a few blocks away from the ball drop on West 43rd Street.Although they were the cheapest seats in the house, I think they were the best because the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/should-i-visit-times-square-2019-6">views of Times Square</a> provided us with plenty of great people-watching.Higher-priced tickets came with seats at an actual table but the best bang for our buck were the bar stools. We got guaranteed seating and all-inclusive access to everything that everyone else got for less money.<h2>The food was more high-end than I expected</h2>Normally, I'm not an Applebee's guy, but I'll go there on occasion. I mostly go if I'm traveling on business and need to grab a quick bite, but on New Year's Eve they take everything to the next level. The food isn't <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/applebees-two-people-appetizers-entree-review-photos-2023-10">your typical Applebee's fare</a>. It's much more high-end than I ever expected.There are passed hors d'oeuvres including items like avocado and shrimp ceviche and chicken wontons, a full buffet including steak and salmon, and an assortment of desserts. There's also a premium top-shelf open bar for guests 21 and older and different types of specialty cocktails as well as a Champagne toast.The best part is that twenty minutes before midnight all 400 Applebee's guests are personally escorted outside to a designated area to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-years-eve-ball-drop-tradition-sailors-times-square-2016-12">watch the ball drop</a>. There's no waiting in the cold for hours or fighting to get a good spot. We literally just have to walk outside and head to the corner for a clear, unobstructed view of the ball. You can't beat that.<h2>We used hotel points and airline miles to cover our New Year's Eve trip</h2>After the ball drop, the party is over and since our hotel, the Marriott Marquis, was only a few blocks away, we were back in our hotel room within fifteen minutes.We <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/how-to-earn-redeem-marriott-points">redeemed Marriott points</a> for our stay otherwise it would've cost us somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,200 a night. We also used airline miles to cover our flights, which would normally run us about $600 each. Our only hard costs were the Applebee's tickets which are worth every penny.<h2>I went to Applebee's for New Years Eve again, in 2023</h2>Our most recent exchange student, a 17-year- old high school student from Poland, said she'd also love to visit <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-years-eve-new-york-city-events-things-to-do-2017-11">New York for New Year's Eve</a>. We had such an awesome time bringing in last year that I went online and booked the same seats at Applebee's for the same price to bring in 2024. Last year, I ordered the tickets by phone but this year I did it online so I actually saved some money and paid $2,264 for our three tickets.This year's party did not disappoint, in fact, I'd say it was even better this time around. In addition to everything they offered last year including a live DJ and standard giveaways like hats, tiaras, and noisemakers, the servers were way more interactive with the guests. They chatted and danced throughout the night, which really elevated the party atmosphere.The Applebee's also had dancing robots, which were fun to watch. Plus instead of being in a barricaded area outside like last time, we were allowed to stand directly in the middle of the intersection on 50th Street and Broadway — the street was blocked off to traffic. It was amazing.<h2>If you're going to do New Year's Eve in Times Square, I think this is the way to go</h2>I had a Tito's and Sprite in my hand and my wife of 11 years alongside me. We're giving these exchange students the experience of a lifetime, and then right before the clock strikes 12, boom! We waltz out into the street and take in all the festivities without any hassle.I'm already counting down the days until next year.

I paid $2,500 to spend New Year's Eve at Applebee's and it was worth every penny

Delhi imposes two-night curfew on New Year’s eve — no celebrations allowed at public places

As the fast-approaching southwest monsoon gradually drowns out the summer, it will also help ease and then erase the memories of a brutal season past. Even then, an unease is expected to continue lingering in the minds of most Indians: something just wasn’t right this year. Studies have already shown time and again that deadly heat is becoming a frequent phenomenon in India. With temperatures expected to touch a scorching 54°C, extreme conditions are rendering an increasing number of places unliveable. This includes India’s highly developed metro cities, which are dealing with their own set of unique heat troubles. Delhi-based think tank Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has shed light on an alarming trend: not only are <keyword id="21052325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heatwaves" source="keywords">heatwaves</keyword> are becoming deadlier in India’s major cities, temperatures aren’t dropping enough to provide sufficient respite at night either. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Deadlier heatwaves" comment="subhead" text="Deadlier heatwaves">Deadlier heatwaves</cmsannotation> Spanning over 23 years from January 2001 to April 2024, the study meticulously analysed data from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, and <keyword id="6354321" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bengaluru" source="Orion">Bengaluru</keyword>. While their air temperatures haven’t witnessed a dramatic rise during the specified period, these areas have continued to witness an increase in their relative <keyword id="20237161" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="humidity" source="keywords">humidity</keyword>. The researchers think that this may also be heightening the <keyword id="21177615" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heat-stress" source="keywords">heat stress</keyword> — a measure combining air and land temperatures along with relative humidity — and intensifying the discomfort and <keyword id="19977451" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-risks" source="keywords">health risks</keyword> for the city’s inhabitants. Another of the main culprits behind the discomfort in Indian metros may be due to the way <keyword id="21384366" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="urban-sprawl" source="keywords">urban sprawl</keyword> has spread massively in the past few years. The CSE study found that the rapid expansion of urban areas has led to a significant reduction in <keyword id="20113356" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-cover" source="keywords">green cover</keyword>, coupled with a surge in concrete surfaces. In cities like Chennai, green spaces have dwindled by nearly 14% over the past two decades, while concrete infrastructure has doubled. Even Bengaluru, a city earlier famed for its abundance of garden-like spaces, has only 7% green cover left, an earlier IISc study had found. This transformation contributes to the "<keyword id="21843173" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="urban-heat-island-effect" source="keywords">urban heat island effect</keyword>," where concrete-trapped heat is making urban regions notably warmer than their rural counterparts. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Minimums on the rise" comment="subhead" text="Minimums on the rise">Minimums on the rise</cmsannotation> However, what’s particularly concerning is the decline in nighttime cooling. Historically, cities would cool down considerably at night, providing much-needed relief from the daytime heat. However, the study reveals that this cooling effect has substantially decreased, exposing residents to prolonged periods of high temperatures without respite. The continuous exposure to heat, compounded by high humidity, exacerbates health risks, making heat stress and related illnesses more prevalent and potentially deadly at lower temperatures. The health implications are dire. The study observed an increase in the number of days with a heat index — what the weather “feels like” — surpassing 41°C in cities such as Kolkata and Chennai. Furthermore, the monsoon season, once a period of relief, now brings hotter and more humid conditions in some cities compared to the pre-monsoon months. As most might know, high humidity undermines the body’s ability to cool itself through sweating, increasing the risk of heat stress and related illnesses In response to these findings, CSE Executive Director Anumita Roychowdhury highlighted the necessity for in-depth assessments of heat trends, relative humidity, land surface temperatures, and diurnal temperature variations. These assessments are crucial for developing effective heat management plans that extend beyond emergency responses to encompass long-term strategies, such as expanding green spaces, enhancing water bodies, and improving thermal comfort in buildings. The study also called for reversing detrimental land use patterns and implementing scientifically grounded measures to monitor and mitigate urban heat stress. The time for action is now, as the repercussions of inaction could be devastating for millions residing in India's rapidly growing urban centers. The essay has been edited for length and clarity.In January 2021, my husband and I purchased a three-bedroom, three-bathroom home in Bend, Oregon, for around $850,000. We're located in an area called the Golden Triangle, about 10 minutes from downtown Bend and 20 minutes from nearby towns Redmond and Sisters. You can kind of just split off and go anywhere. It's fantastic.Our property is a little over two acres and it came with an RV parking spot on about three-quarters of an acre.I used to be a big camper. The first summer we lived in the house, some of our friends said they were taking a trip with Hipcamp. I never heard of it before. Its a website where homeowners can rent out land to RVs and tent campers.My husband and I weren't using the RV spot at all, so I figured it was worth a shot. It goes back into the upkeep of the spots, too, but with a two-acre property, there's always going to be high maintenance costs.We were getting such good feedback on the first RV spot that we decided to make a second. We debated leaving that area just for dry camping, but my husband decided he could hook up power and water.<h2 id="4833faed-1a07-4c4d-ab42-08d11b046518">Summer is our busiest season</h2><div type="image" title="Two Adirondack chairs underneath a string of outdoor lights waiting for the McCrocklin's next visitors" height="958" width="1282" msid="113827995" hostid="261" sizebytes="237296"></div>I really love meeting our guests and getting to know some amazing people.We get a mix of people staying on the property. People mostly come for mountain-biking, zip-lining, hiking, and rafting in the area.We have a lot of people come in for concerts at the Hayden Homes Amphitheater and the fairgrounds nearby. There was a big country music festival this summer and a young group of kids came in. They had the best time ever, but we're also super respectful.They come from all over. We've had guests from as far away as Georgia and Pennsylvania. We had a family this year from Sweden who were spending a month traveling the US. We did manage to get over the language barrier.Our busiest season is the summer, June through August. We're booked out around 25 nights per month. Nightly rates are between $70 to $74. For the fall and spring it drops down to five or six nights per month.We don't have too many campers November through February. One time, however, we had a family come over the mountain on New Year's Eve. They pulled their camp trailer through the snow to come to Bend with their young kids. We had a lot of snow and had to go out and shovel a spot for them. They had a blast, though — the kids did a lot of sledding.<h2 id="e5a116ff-42ec-479c-8597-2c0f79b96877">Some Hipcamp guests have been especially memorable</h2><div type="image" title="A picnic table and two Adirondack chairs" height="1707" width="1280" msid="113827994" hostid="261" sizebytes="662330"></div>Our house is about 100 feet from the site. We keep the door open during the summer and we've never been bothered by noise.The only time we really heard someone was a group from Santa Rosa, California. They were all in their 50s and just had the most amazing time. They rented both spots, set up lights, played guitar, danced, and sang. We loved it.We get a lot of returners — people who will book a year in advance and come back for their summer trip. There's a retired couple who comes every year for the Fourth of July because they love our local parades so much.Last summer, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and we had to block off some time on the calendar because I just couldn't keep up with guests. When we reopened the listing, my husband mentioned we might be slow communicating because I was recovering from surgery. The guests brought me a card and some flowers. It was so nice of them.<h2 id="29e8f692-d58d-41fb-8e8f-e28663333ddf">You have to be OK with strangers on your property</h2><div type="image" title="A group of visitors hang out in the Adirondack chairs outside their parked RV." height="960" width="1280" msid="113827991" hostid="261" sizebytes="331424"></div>I love how much fun Hipcamp can be, but it does take a lot of work.I'm a little bit of a perfectionist. I like the yard to look nice, to be mowed, and the flowers to be planted, so springtime gets a little bit busy. But once it's all dialed in, it really is a lot of fun.Between each guest, I spend about 45 minutes cleaning up the site. I try not to go up there when the campers are up there — I just don't want to bother them. I do a deep water on the flowers. I take out the trash, pull some weeds, and do a quick mow of the lawn if need be.I also only do two-night minimums. Most people want to come for the whole weekend. If someone is just here one day, it seems to really mess things up.Talking to people when they arrive always puts my mind at ease. I'll do a short meet-and-greet, though if we really hit it off I'll chat with them for an hour. I prefer to meet people — I find it so much better than just somebody you don't see setting up on your property.If you're not ready to share your space — if you're a really private person and it bothers you to see people on your land — then you're probably not going to be a good fit for this.We happen to love it.

I let campers rent part of my backyard from $70 a night. It helps pay our high home maintenance costs.

All three also own and operate another New York City cocktail bar, Monkey Thief.This conversation has been lightly edited for length and clarity.Avi: Rishi and I go way back. We grew up together in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/visit-india-2016-3">New Delhi, India</a>. Our parents were friends.Fast forward to 2016, Rishi was living with my brother in New York City, and we reconnected.Rishi: After I graduated college, I worked in event management. Two years later, I pivoted and started working for a tech startup where I was leading <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-double-dip-work-two-jobs-2023-9">quality assurance.</a>I liked the creative aspect of getting to work with different companies. But my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-worker-left-job-opened-natural-wine-bar-brooklyn-2024-11">work was very monotonous</a>. It got boring. And I didn't like being behind a desk for 10 to 13 hours a day.Avi: I went to college at Emory in Atlanta. My peers were entering one of three fields: finance, marketing, or consulting. The thing that intrigued me most was consulting because of its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-hired-top-consulting-firms-bcg-mckinsey-pwc-2024-7">problem-solving nature. </a>I took a job at a consulting firm that would allow me to move to New York City. Reality hit pretty quickly with regard to what you actually do as a business analyst at a consulting firm. It was 80 hours a week sitting on Excel and PowerPoint, building models, and putting together decks. I didn't feel like I got to see any of my work being implemented. I had a hunger to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/six-figure-consulting-job-not-fulfilling-quit-start-business-2024-11">make more of an impact.</a>Rishi: When I reconnected with Avi, we were both in a position where we didn't know what we wanted to do with our lives. We didn't like where we were at. We didn't want to go through life like that, so we started talking about what would happen if we followed our dreams.<h2 id="891d925d-e92d-4743-9282-ab8459339509">We wanted to go into food and beverage</h2>Avi: Growing up in India, food was a big part of our social and familial interactions. That's where the love started.We knew how <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/restaurants-america-eating-out-crisis-your-fault-labor-shortage-tipping-2024-2">difficult the industry</a> was, but we were still fairly young, so we just said let's give it a shot. In the worst-case scenario, we can always come back to our desk jobs.Rishi: I started working as a dishwasher, busser, server, and then manager at an Indian restaurant to gain experience while we came up with our concept.Avi: It was definitely a risky move. Coming from Asian households, we were guided toward a more <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/modern-career-path-2018-7">traditional career path</a>. I had to present my dad with a full business plan and pitch the bar to him. But we had done our market research and knew we had a good idea.We wanted Sama Street to be based on our upbringing and experiences. Maybe you need to be dressed a certain way, or you're afraid to be loud with your friends. Sama is from the Sanskrit word meaning true equality to all beings.We were looking for a head bartender and posted an ad on Craiglist. That's how we met David. He helped us realize our vision.David: I was working as a general manager at the time, but wanted to get back behind the bar. I saw the ad and skipped over it a few times because they seemed pretty green. But my wife convinced me to call them. We talked for an hour and a half and just clicked right away. We had all the same sort of ideas about hospitality.<h2 id="88091082-fd0e-4bc0-9939-3fbe42de37fc">We opened Sama Street in 2019</h2>David: We learned so much during that process. We <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/changes-restaurants-pandemic-qr-codes-self-service-kiosks-2024-10">survived the pandemic.</a>Avi: It was rough. We celebrated our one-year anniversary over FaceTime. But Sama Street is in Greenpoint, a very close-knit neighborhood, so our regulars showed up for us. The other bars and restaurants did, too. There was a lot of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-its-like-to-eat-restaurant-outdoor-dining-nyc-pandemic-2020-6">local industry support.</a>We basically did everything that we were <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-restaurants-are-struggling-2020-12">legally able to do</a> to get as many people drinks and food during the lockdown.We're definitely still feeling the ripples of COVID, but it was a great learning experience and taught us that anything can change overnight, and you have to be able to pivot.<div type="image" title="four craft cocktails" height="5464" width="8192" msid="115385469" hostid="261" sizebytes="2130388"></div>I still get worried about financial security some days. As an entrepreneur, you can't pay yourselves unless the business is doing well.<h2 id="e8d53f13-0f83-4bae-9d07-d009ad306ed7">We knew we wanted to expand</h2>David: We searched and searched and searched and came across a spot in Hell's Kitchen and fell in love immediately.Avi: We opened Monkey Thief in October.David: It was very fast. We didn't have to do a lot with the space, mostly cosmetic changes and getting staff trained. The fast opening was good for our pocketbooks but also very high stress. We've all been doing 18-hour days for the last two months.Rishi: We couldn't have asked for a better opening. We've had so much support from the neighborhood, and our regulars from Sama Street have come in to see the new concept.David: It's been a learning curve because it's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/restaurant-owners-how-to-run-a-successful-profitable-small-business-2023-10">bigger than Sama Street. </a>But it's a good problem to have. We've got people waiting outside to come in.Rishi: Hopefully, we will open a couple more spaces in the future.Avi: One of the things I love about this industry is that every day is different, though not necessarily in a good way. You might walk in and see the AC has stopped working or the gas is turned off. It's never boring.David: This is not an industry for everyone. The reason we've been successful is that we love coming to work every day. We love the chaos. We love the community.

We will still call her while cooking to ask her questions about her recipes and techniques.""The fish is the most important part for us because my grandma includes this for every Chinese New Year dinner; it feels like the centerpiece of the meal," they added. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Tuesday decided to impose a weekend curfew in the capital city in the wake of the ongoing Covid-19 resurgence. In a virtual meeting chaired by Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, the Authority suggested for weekend curfew during which no non-essential movement will be allowed. The meeting also discussed imposing more restrictions in the city in an effort to curb the unabated surge. According to the DDMA order, all government offices, except those dealing with essential services, will work from home. A cap of 50 per cent occupancy has been imposed on private offices. On Monday, Delhi reported 4,099 fresh Covid cases, the highest single-day spike after May 18, 2021 when the tally was also 4,482. The new cases have pushed the infection tally to 14,58,220. Meanwhile, an additional Covid fatality has increased the national capital's death toll to 25,110. The Covid infection in the city has climbed to 6.46 per cent, highest in the last seven months. According to the Delhi Health Department, the national capital had recorded 6.89 per cent positivity rate on May 18, 2021. Of the cases being reported in the national capital, 81 per cent are that of the new Omicron variant, Health Minister Satyendra Jain had said in the Legislative Assembly on Monday. The capital has, so far, detected 351 Omicron cases, of which 57 have been discharged from the hospital.
