Cases of malaria are considerably higher so far when compared to last year. Delhi has reported 363 malaria cases till this month while the figure stood at 294 in the corresponding month in 2023. As per a PTI report, the total malaria cases last year were 426. Most malaria cases are reported from the West Delhi zone. As for Chikungunya, 43 cases have been reported so far. This is nearly double than last year when the figure stood at 23. A total of 65 cases of the virus were reported last year. The most number of chikungunya cases have been reported from the South Delhi zone this year. Last week, the city witnessed a spike of nearly 250 cases of dengue in seven days. As per Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) data from January till September 21, a total of 1,229 dengue cases have been reported in the city with the death of a 54-year old registered in Lok Nayak Hospital, a senior official at the hospital had confirmed. Delhi reported 651 cases of dengue this month. Last month, a total of 256 dengue cases were reported in the city. The number of cases has become three-digit since August, it said. Last year, Delhi reported 3,013 dengue cases till the corresponding month, a manifold increase from 525 in 2022. A total of 9,266 cases were reported in the entire year while 19 dengue deaths were registered in the city last year. In September alone, the figure stood at 2,141 cases in 2023. The most number of cases this year are reported from the Najafgarg zone at 180. In a week, 45 cases have been reported in the area, the highest of all the zones besides the south zone where an equal number of cases were reported this week. The non-MCD areas governed by other agencies like NDMC, Delhi Cantt, and Railways, reported 312 dengue cases to the total tally, as per the data. To enforce mosquito control laws, the MCD has issued over 1.14 lakh legal notices and 39,338 challans to those who allowed mosquito breeding on their properties. Repeat offenders have been fined Rs 24.82 lakh, and police complaints have been filed against 9,241 people who didn't follow the rules, as per the data. The civic body also plans to increase fogging operations at major upcoming public events like Dussehra and Durga Puja and step up inspections and anti-larval measures in areas with high mosquito populations to curb the infectivity of the virus. Delhi reports over 300 dengue cases in a week; malaria and chikungunya cases on the rise

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has attributed the significant <keyword id="20029550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rise" source="keywords">rise</keyword> in <keyword id="20233512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue-cases" source="keywords">dengue cases</keyword> in the city this year to an increase in the number of <keyword id="22375552" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="testing-centres" source="keywords">testing centres</keyword>, which has grown from 36 to 900 compared to last year, according to an official report. As of July 6, Delhi recorded over 256 dengue cases, which is nearly double of the 136 cases recorded in the corresponding period in 2023 and the highest since 2020, according to the report's data. In previous years, the number of dengue cases stood at 153 in 2022, 38 in 2021, and 22 in 2020. The highest number of dengue cases were recorded in the Najafgarh Zone, the report said. No deaths due to the vector-borne disease have been reported so far this year. Last year, 19 deaths occurred due to dengue, the second-highest since 2020. "The rise in the number of cases this year is because more testing centres have started collecting samples and reporting the dengue cases to the civic body. Until last year, there were about 36 testing centres. Now, this number has increased to 900 because of which the numbers appear to be inflated," a senior civic body official said. The peak season for dengue is yet to arrive in Delhi and the situation will call for urgent attention when the monsoon advances, providing a suitable atmosphere for <keyword id="21283114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mosquito-breeding" source="keywords">mosquito breeding</keyword> to increase significantly, the official said. Usually, it takes about 10-15 days for a larva to become an adult mosquito that spreads dengue. The MCD is taking various measures to curb breeding at the source, another official said. According to the report, in areas under the jurisdiction of other agencies like New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), Delhi Cantt and Railways, around 10 dengue cases were reported as of July 6. The report also shows data on other vector-borne diseases. The number of malaria cases reported until the end of last week stood at 90, while chikungunya cases were logged at 22. The MCD conducted over 1.8 crore house visits to check for domestic mosquito breeding and found breeding in over 43,000 houses, the report said. Rise in dengue cases due to more testing centres in city: MCD

The national capital has reported around 295 fresh cases of <keyword id="6360092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue" source="Orion">dengue</keyword> in a week - taking the total number of cases reported this year to 2490. However, there has been no death due to <keyword id="6360092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue" source="Orion">dengue</keyword>, shows official figures. As per official figures released by the <keyword id="48285" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="municipal-corporation" source="Orion">Municipal Corporation</keyword> of <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> (<keyword id="55093" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mcd" source="Orion">MCD</keyword>), there were around 693 cases of dengue reported in the month of September this year. In October, this count rose to 1238 cases. Around 295 positive cases of dengue have been reported between November 1 and 7, said officials with the anti-malaria wing of the <keyword id="48285" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="municipal-corporation" source="Orion">municipal corporation</keyword>. Last year, there were around 6739 cases reported in the month of November, they pointed out. Similarly, the national capital has also recorded seven new cases of malaria and a single case of <keyword id="6374860" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="chikungunya" source="Orion">Chikungunya</keyword> in the last week - taking the total count of cases reported in the current year to 207 and 41 respectively. Delhi reports 295 cases of dengue in a week

<keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> has registered a huge spurt in dengue cases, with over 100 people being diagnosed with the infection in the last one week, taking the tally of the vector-borne disease in the city to nearly 400 so far this year. According to a report released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (<keyword id="55093" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mcd" source="Orion">MCD</keyword>) on Monday, 152 cases have been reported in this month alone till September 17. The city had recorded 295 dengue cases till September 9. In the last one week, 101 fresh cases have been reported. Out of the 396 total cases recorded till September 17 this year, 75 were reported in August. It is also the highest number of dengue cases logged during the January 1-September 17 period, since 2017, when the corresponding figure was 1,465. No death has been reported so far this year due to the disease. Ninety-two cases of malaria and 17 case of chikungunya have also been reported this year in Delhi till September 17, the report said. A senior MCD official had earlier said the rising cases of dengue is a "matter of concern for us" and "we are working on measures to combat it". Cases of vector-borne diseases are usually reported between July and November, sometimes stretching till mid-December. Civic officials said dengue cases were recorded earlier than usual this year due to weather conditions congenial for mosquito breeding. Last year, 9,613 dengue cases were recorded in the national capital, the highest since 2015, along with 23 deaths -- the maximum since 2016. According to the MCD report, the city recorded 23 dengue cases in January, 16 in February, 22 in March, 20 in April, 30 in May, 32 in June and 26 in July. In 2018, Delhi had reported 343 dengue cases during the January 1-September 17 period, according to the report. The figures in 2019, 2020 and 2021 were -- 217, 172 and 211, respectively. Amid the spike in cases of dengue in Delhi, mosquito breeding was found at public places and government offices, including a police academy and a metro station, during an anti-dengue drive following which legal measures were taken by the civic authorities. "This year, MCD has issued 82,490 legal notices and 28,846 challans so far against defaulters," the civic body had said in a statement on September 16. Intensifying its ongoing drive for prevention and control of vector-borne diseases, the MCD has carried out a "massive drive to detect mosquito-breeding in the premises of government offices, construction sites, schools, universities, educational institutes, metro parking lots and metro stations". During the drive, breeding of mosquito larvae was found on their premises and the "department issued 42 challans and 18 notices", it said. Legal measures were taken against defaulters for mosquito-genic condition or breeding of larvae found on premises of Delhi Jal Board plant offices, Keshopur and Nangloi; DDA horiticulture unit, Janakpuri; Kukeja Hospital, <keyword id="6366598" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajouri-garden" source="Orion">Rajouri Garden</keyword>, NITRD TB Hospital, Dwarka; Akash Institute IIT-JEE &amp; Medical, Dwarka; police stations at Paschim Vihar West and Seelampur; DJB Yamuna Vihar; Government Senior Secondary School, Brahampuri; PWD Office Gokulpuri; Delhi Police Academy, Sonia Vihar; BSES Kamla Market; metro station at Peeragarhi; and PWD Outer Ring Road, Peeragarhi, the statement said. Delhi reports over 400 cases of dengue in a week, taking the tally to 937

Amid a spike in <keyword id="64895" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dengue-cases" source="Orion">dengue cases</keyword> in the national capital, many people down with viral infection are exhibiting "overlapping symptoms" of COVID-19 and the vector-borne disease, leaving both patients and doctors perplexed about the exact diagnosis. Cases of vector-borne diseases are usually reported between July and November, sometimes stretching till mid-December. Its symptoms include high fever, headache, rash and muscle and joint pain, which are quite similar to that of COVID-19 which also includes fever or chills, muscle or body aches, fatigue and headache among others. In such a situation it has become difficult to ascertain whether a person suffering from fever, body ache and headache is <keyword id="8764262" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="covid" source="Orion">Covid</keyword> positive or not, doctors said. "Covid cases are declining right now, but the virus is still there. I am still seeing Covid cases in my OPD. In the last 3-4 days, two cases were detected in OPD and one later in an ICU. However, on an average, dengue infection is on rise right now," said Dr Suranjit Chatterjee, a senior consultant at <keyword id="56368" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="apollo-hospitals" source="Orion">Apollo Hospitals</keyword>. "There are a few overlapping symptoms when it comes to both dengue and Covid, such as fever, bodyache and headache, and in such cases diagnosis cannot be that black and white. So, we are prescribing both Covid and dengue test to ascertain the exact infection. In fact, in some cases, even malaria and typhoid tests are also being done," he said. However, if a patient is suffering more from sore throat and cough and their fever is not very high, then Covid infection is more probable. So, a dengue test is not being prescribed in cases "where we can differentiate from the nature of symptoms," Chatterjee added. Doctors at many government and private hospitals are reporting a rise in footfall in OPDs after a continuous spike in dengue cases in <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> in the past two weeks. Most of the patients are complaining of fever, cough, sore throat and body ache or headache or both. Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital - Delhi government's largest hospital and the main COVID-19 facility - is also reporting dengue cases with some of the patients being admitted after their platelets level had fallen beyond the normal range. Dengue fever can result in a drop in white blood cell and platelet counts. The normal platelet count in the body ranges from 1.5 to 4 lacs, which can go down to as low as 20,000 to 40,000 in the case of dengue patients. "Yes, rising dengue cases are making diagnosis difficult now. Earlier, we would analyse symptoms and Covid test would be prescribed if they had fever or other matching symptoms. Now not only patients, but even doctors are confused about the exact ailment due to their overlapping symptoms," a senior doctor at the hospital said. Over 520 dengue cases have been reported in Delhi this year till September 21, as per the data shared by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). According to a report released by the civic body on September 26, as many as 281 cases have been reported this month alone till September 21. The spurt in dengue cases in the national capital has come after Delhi was lashed by incessant rains recently. 106 cases of malaria and 20 cases of chikungunya have also been reported this year in Delhi in the same period, the report said. Of the 525 total cases recorded till September 21 this year, 75 were reported in August, which is the highest number of dengue cases logged between January 1 to September 21 since 2017, when the corresponding figure was 1,807. Malaria, dengue and chikungunya are accompanied by high-grade fever and, therefore, doctors feel that people might think that they have contracted COVID-19, or even vice-versa. Chatterjee said many people are reluctant to get the COVID-19 test done, fearing they will have to go in isolation as they want to "go on with their lives". "So, given the slump in daily Covid cases in Delhi and rise in dengue cases, many are assuming that if they have fever or sore throat or body ache, it is either regular viral infection or something else, but not Covid. But, it could be Covid too, as the coronavirus is still amidst us," he cautioned and urged people to get themselves tested for Covid too if symptoms persist. At many workplaces, employees continue to work despite having cough, cold or sore throat, while earlier when the <keyword id="8785701" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Covid-19-cases" source="Orion">COVID-19 cases</keyword> were on the rise, it would have been a strict no-no with an option of a 'work from home' regimen given to them, doctors said. "But, I would urge people to not assume any kind of fever as a regular flu, if their symptoms are prolonged and intense, consult a doctor," Chatterjee added. The <keyword id="79024" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="New-Delhi-Municipal-Council">New Delhi Municipal Council</keyword> (NDMC) has issued 80 notices this month to the <keyword id="47718" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rashtrapati-Bhavan">Rashtrapati Bhavan</keyword> after <keyword id="6360092" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="DENGUE">dengue</keyword> mosquitoes were found breeding at various places especially near residential quarters of the Rashtrapati Bhavan staff. 

	"During this month, we have issued around 80 notices to various departments to check mosquito breeding on their premises," a senior NDMC official told PTI.
 

	The civic body has also constituted a four-member team after a meeting with the Director of the President's Estate to brainstorm ways and means to control mosquito breeding at Rashtrapati Bhavan at the earliest.
 

	"The team consists of one member each from sanitation and horticulture units at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and Malaria unit of NDMC Health Department.
 

	"This team will review the mosquitogenic conditions at various places in the President Estate and will help in precautionary as well as controlling measures," the official added.
 

	The council had last week issued challans to four hospitals including AIIMS and Safdarjung, various government offices and a school here after dengue mosquitoes were found breeding on their premises.
 "We had issued challans to four hospitals including AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital, RML Hospital and <keyword id="209925" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lady-Hardinge-Hospital">Lady Hardinge Hospital</keyword> after their premises were found to be breeding ground for mosquitoes," the official said. 

	The Ministries of Finance and Home Affairs, Bihar Bhawan, Sikkim Bhawan and Uttarakhand Bhawan were issued notices by the NDMC for mosquitogenic conditions on their premises. 
 

	The council staff had also detected heavy mosquito-breeding conditions in five embassies including that of Ghana, Ethiopia, Singapore, Malaysia, Bhutan, Ethiopia and the Czech Republic, but no challans have been issued to them as the civic-body doesn't have an authority to do so. 
 

	The action comes in wake of the rising figures of the total number of cases from the vector-borne disease which shoot to an alarming 530, with over 440 of them being reported in August only. Two deaths have been reported due to this disease this year. 
 

	The dengue cases in the city is up this year by 251 cases compared to what was recorded last year by this time. 
 

	"We have issued a total of 137 challans this season for mosquito breeding inside institutions and households and served 3215 notices. 
 

	"During the inspection, if the premises are tested positive for mosquito breeding, they are issued notices. But if no improvement is found in the hygiene conditions during the next inspection, the defaulters are issued challans," the official said. 
 

	Earlier this month, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) had also issued 80 challans to government and educational institutions in the city, including JNU, DDA, DTC and PWD, for breeding of mosquitoes in their premises. 
 

	Dengue a vector-borne disease, is transmitted by several species of mosquito within the genus Aedes. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash that is similar to measles. 
 

	Doctors say treatment is symptomatic with no specific cure, so if patients use pain medicines indiscriminately there is a risk of becoming resistant to these.

New Delhi, As Google celebrates its 25th birthday this month, its CEO <keyword id="164502" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sundar-pichai" source="Orion">Sundar Pichai</keyword> has reminisced about how technology has changed the way we communicate, create and innovate. Celebrating Google's rich history of events (the company will officially celebrate its 25th birthday later this month), <keyword id="1604185" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pichai" source="Orion">Pichai</keyword> said it's time for some gratitude, and a moment to reflect. "Years ago, when I was studying in the US, my dad -- who was back in India -- got his first email address. I was really excited to have a faster (and cheaper) way to communicate with him, so I sent a message. "And then I waited...and waited. It was two full days before I got this reply Dear Mr. Pichai, email received. All is well," he wrote late on Tuesday. Fast forward to a few months ago. "I was with my teenage son. He saw something interesting, took some quick pictures and shared them with his friends. Then they exchanged a few messages, and it all seemed faster than the time it would take me just to pull out my phone," said Pichai. "How I communicated with my dad all those years ago compared with how my son communicates today shows just how much change can happen across generations," he noted. Google was founded on September 4, 1998, by American computer scientists Larry Page and <keyword id="100154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sergey-brin" source="Orion">Sergey Brin</keyword> while they were PhD students at Stanford University in California. The company -- now part of the parent group called Alphabet and run by Indian-origin Pichai -- has diversified into several tech streams and launched several products. "Larry and Sergey first wrote down our mission 25 years ago: to organise the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. The product they built, Google Search, went on to help billions of people around the world get answers to their questions," said Pichai. Search is still at the core of the mission, and it's still the biggest moonshot with so much more to do, according to him. "Of course, Google today is more than a search box. We have 15 Google products that each serve more than half a billion people and businesses, and six that serve more than 2 billion users each," Pichai informed. The company rapidly grew to offer a multitude of products and services beyond Google Search, many of which hold dominant market positions like Gmail, Google Maps, Google Cloud, Chrome, YouTube, Workspace, Android operating system, cloud storage Drive, Google Translate), video chat app Meet, Pixel smartphones, Google Assistant, Bard AI and more. Google has been investing in AI since almost the beginning. They were one of the first to use machine learning in their products, starting in the early 2000s. "Now, generative AI is helping us reimagine our core products in exciting ways -- from our new Search Generative Experience (SGE), to "Help Me Write" in Gmail. And earlier this year, we launched Bard, an early experiment that lets people collaborate with generative AI," said Pichai. One million people are already using generative AI in Google Workspace to write and create. Flood forecasting now covers places where over 460 million people live. A million researchers have used the AlphaFold database which covers 200 million predictions of protein structures, helping with advances to cut plastic pollution, tackle antibiotic resistance, fight malaria, and more. "We've demonstrated how AI can help the airline industry to decrease contrails from planes, an important tool for fighting climate change," according to Pichai. Pichai was appointed as CEO of Google on October 24, 2015, replacing Page, who became the CEO of Alphabet. On December 3, 2019, Pichai also became the CEO of Alphabet. "Over time, AI will be the biggest technological shift we see in our lifetimes. And in 2048, if, somewhere in the world, a teenager looks at all we've built with AI and shrugs, we'll know we succeeded. And then we'll get back to work. Thanks for an amazing 25," he noted.

New Delhi, Apr 25 () The Godrej Group on Saturday urged the government to include mosquito repellents and other similar products in the essential items list during the ongoing lockdown. As a trend, malaria and dengue spike during May running up to August and preparation for the malaria season starts from April, it said in a statement. The group's FMCG arm Godrej Consumer Product Ltd (GCPL) is a major player in the segment with brands like GoodKnight and Hit. As per the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, India witnessed 3,34,693 malaria cases in 2019 and 19,980 cases were already reported up to February this year. Presently, the government and healthcare infrastructure are heavily invested to deal with COVID-19, but India cannot be unprepared for malaria and dengue, it said. During the current nationwide lockdown, only essential products are allowed to be sold. "...mosquito repellents, personal repellents, liquid vapourisers, must be brought under the purview of 'essential goods'. This will ensure an uninterrupted supply of household insecticide products and will be easily accessible for families till the lockdown is lifted completely," it added. In March, the World Health Organization (WHO) also issued an advisory urging countries to ensure the continuity of malaria services in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the statement said "COVID-19 has caused high levels of panic. While we do our best to deal with this pandemic, we should not forget the looming threat of malaria and dengue. "Indian households primarily depend on mosquito repellents, vapourisers, coils to safeguard themselves. The infected person must avoid scratching the rashes or blisters. With the schools reopening, one must proceed with caution and not panic because the situation is not alarming yet.
