Today, the date marks the second anniversary of a horrible crime that shook the very soul of our nation, or so we think. Two years back, a 23-year old Delhi girl was brutally assaulted and raped in a moving bus by five men, and the incident was heavily reported in media because of the level of heinousness those men had shown. 
 
Even before the incident happened, eve teasing, molestation and rape were three words that were not that unheard of in India. Although, after that particular incident, there has been a sudden shift in the way our society looks at men, each and every one of them. 
 
However, the question is, is it justified? 
 
It is true that our society is full of perverts who consider women to be inferior to them in all manners, and think of themselves as the masters of the objects they see girls as. It is true that rapes are as much an issue in the country as is corruption. It is true that eve teasing has even happened in rallies against eve teasing, but looking at all men with raised eyebrows is surely not a way to deal with the problem. 
 
A few days back, there was a video in which two college-going girls were seen thrashing and abusing three men who reportedly molested and abused them in a moving bus. Within no time, the issue gained the attention at many social media platforms, with the hashtag #RohtakBravehearts trending. 
 CM awards were announced, the driver and conductor of the bus were suspended and the molesters were incarcerated. <keyword id="74452" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Haryana-government">Haryana government</keyword> was even applauded for taking a quick action in such a sensitive issue. 
 However, soon after that video, another video surfaced, showing the two girls beating someone else in a park in Haryana. This was followed by a video showing the female passengers of the bus coming out in the open and saying that the boys didn’t tease or molest the girls. Just when the matter was heating up, an <keyword id="348574" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="independent-journalist">independent journalist</keyword> <keyword id="2643368" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Deepika-Narayan-Bhardwaj">Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj</keyword>, who is associated with the issue of men suffering because of false cruelty and dowry charges under Section <keyword id="974500" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="498A">498A</keyword>, smelled something foul in the case and took it upon her to unearth the hidden facts. 
She, in association with the team of The Logical Indian, explored some shocking facts in the case and made a small video about it, unearthing several cases where the Rohtak sisters filed false cases or made false charges for extorting money from boys’ families. Called <a href="http://thelogicalindian.com/story-feed/exclusive/final-face-rohtak-sisters/">The Final Face of The Rohtak Sisters</a>, the video was uploaded on <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>, TLI’s website and <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword>, and has been seen by hundreds and thousands of people by now. 
 
As we all got to know about the details which were not taken up in the first few days of the incident, an uglier side of Women Safety in India has come to light, the side where not women but men are the victims. 
 
We got in touch with Deepika and below are the excerpts from her interview: 
 
How did you smell that there was a foul play involved in the incident? 
To tell you the truth, I had applauded the girls when I had first read about the incident, but then my co-activists said that being someone who knows the ground realities of false charges against men, how can you be so sure that the girls are telling the truth? This made me a bit skeptical; being from Haryana myself, I could easily relate with this incident because this is unfortunately a common sight in roadways buses. However, when I repeatedly heard the video, I heard what most of the people ignored. The women in the bus were asking the girls to leave the boys in their thick Haryanvi accent. I understood the accent, which made me wonder why the women were supporting the boys. Also, in Haryana Roadways, if such cases happen, the boys are asked to vacate the bus, which was not done in this case. All these loopholes made me have a closer look at the story and I decided to go and interview the boys to know their side of the story. 
 
You have been working for this cause for long now. How bad is the situation? Can you share some data? It is very unfortunate that sensitive issues like rape and molestation are being used to extract revenge or extort money from men. I am primarily working for issues related with Section 498A, where men are falsely accused of demanding dowry. According to the data shared by <keyword id="83267" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi-Commission-for-Women">Delhi Commission for Women</keyword>, 1,466 of the 2,753 rape cases registered between April 2013 and July 2014 were found to be false. This is an alarming number, and we as a society, need to be more aware about such incidents before we jump on to conclusions that men are always at fault. Almost 1,500 false cases were filed for a highly sensitive issue like rape from June 2013 to July 2014, which reflects that there is an uprise in people making bad use of such laws. 
 
Coming back to the Rohtak incident, where is the investigation headed? Any updates? 
I know as much about the case as everyone else. Special investigation teams have been formed to investigate the case, and polygraph tests of three accused boys and those sisters would be done. There are 9 witnesses of the incident, including the conductor and driver of the bus, and I hope that they do not act partial towards any party. This incident can prove to be a landmark in such cases, and people should know that just because the complainant is a woman doesn’t mean that she is a victim. 
 
You shared a newspaper clipping on your Facebook profile that the girls are demanding a probe into the documentary you made? Have you been served any notice? 
No, none as of yet. Although if they do plan to serve me a notice, I have enough evidences to prove that I wanted to interview them too, but they didn’t agree to it. 
 
 
 
You have been working in this field for quite some time now. What do you think should be done for better laws? 
Well, I would like to appeal for two things. One, the media should be impartial and show both sides of the story before jumping to conclusions that make catchy headlines. In this incident, had the media acted fast and dug for details, the scenario would have been different. Also, the laws should be like this that no man who molests a lady should be let go but at the same time, no woman who falsely accuses someone should be left free to do the same thing again. Recently, a woman was reported to have filed 100 false cases against different men. This should be stopped. People should not feel free to misuse the law. The theory of “Guilty until proven innocent” should not be practiced in these cases. 
 
It also happens to be the second anniversary of <keyword id="1490015" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi-gang-rape-case">Delhi gang rape case</keyword>. What do you think has changed? There is no doubt that ‘<keyword id="6363203" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Crime-against-women">crime against women</keyword>’ is a concern in our society, and that after that particular incidence, there has been an uprise in awareness about women safety. Although there are certain wrong issues that have come up too after that incident; it is necessary to draw a line between true and false cries of women. When we talk of the role equality plays in a better society, we should talk about equality and not only women development. The laws need to be stricter and the police department needs more personnel. 'Crime against women' is a serious concern but so is rising crime rates everywhere in India. We as a society need to question where we are headed.

Two Years To Delhi Gang Rape; In Conversation With Someone Who Thinks Even Men Deserve Safety

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - All four men convicted of raping and murdering a 23-year-old woman in Delhi were sentenced to death on Friday, nine months after a crime whose savagery triggered furious protests across Indiaand rare national debate about violence against women.
"Everybody got the death penalty," defense lawyer A.P. Singh told reporters outside the Delhi courtroom, where dozens of police had formed a barricade to keep crowds back.
One of the four men sentenced to death by hanging, gym instructor Vinay Sharma, was dragged out of the court crying.
The victim, who was raped for an hour and tortured with an iron rod on a moving bus, became a symbol of the dangers women face in a country where a <keyword id="39493" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Rape">rape</keyword> is reported on average every 21 minutes and acid attacks and cases of molestation are common.
"This has shocked the collective conscience of society," Judge Yogesh Khanna told the court, referring to the attack.
The four men were sentenced to death despite their lawyers' pleas to ignore popular and political pressure for a penalty handed down in only the "rarest of rare" cases.
Lawyer A.P. Singh, who represented two of the convicts in the trial, said hours before the sentencing that it would be "based on the emotions of the people".
"This sentencing is under political pressure," he said.
The sentencing capped a seven-month trial, often held behind closed doors, that was punctuated dramatically by a fifth defendant hanging himself in his jail cell. A sixth, who was under 18 at the time of the attack, was earlier sentenced to three years detention, the maximum allowed under juvenile law.
It was one of the biggest tests in years of <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>'s paradoxical attitude towards the death penalty.
The country's judges hand down, on average, 130 death sentences every year but India has executed just three people in the past 17 years. Despite its apparent reluctance to carry out the sentences, last year India voted against a U.N. draft resolution calling for a global moratorium on executions.
In November, India ended what many human rights groups had interpreted as an undeclared moratorium on capital punishment when it executed a man convicted for the 2008 militant attack on the city of Mumbai. Three months later, it hanged a Kashmiri separatist for a 2001 militant attack on parliament.
"In the past year, India has made a full-scale retreat from its previous principled rejection of the death penalty," said Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director of Human Rights Watch.
The hanging of the two militants came after a seven-year gap in executions, the last being a man who was convicted of raping and killing a schoolgirl in the city of Kolkata.
Prosecutors had called for the "harshest punishment" to be given to Sharma, bus cleaner Akshay Kumar Singh, fruit-seller Pawan Gupta, and unemployed Mukesh Singh for last December's murder to signal that such attacks cannot be tolerated.
The four men were found guilty of luring the woman onto a bus, raping and torturing her with a metal bar and then throwing her naked and bleeding onto the road. She died two weeks later.
Violent protests exploded in several cities after the crime, a reaction commentators and sociologists said reflected a deep well of frustration that many urban Indians feel over what they see as weak governance and poor leadership on social issues.
The government, seen as out of touch with the aspirations of the burgeoning urban middle class, was caught off guard by the protests.
DIVIDED ON DEATH
The Delhi case led to the introduction of tougher rape laws in March, and for the first time open conversation about gender crime in television debates, social media and even Bollywood.
Still, sex crimes remain commonplace in India, and social commentators say patriarchal attitudes towards women have not been diluted by more than a decade of rapid economic growth.
Comments on social media websites and elsewhere ahead of the sentencing suggested that popular opinion was in favor of executing the men, although a survey by CNN-IBN-The Hindu newspaper in July showed Indians were divided on the merits of capital punishment.
The victim's parents have said their daughter's dying wish was for her attackers to be "burned alive".
A potentially years-long appeals process lies ahead for the four men. The case will go to the High Court and then Supreme Court. If they confirm the sentences, the final decision will lie with the president, who has the power to grant clemency.
Although the Supreme Court ruled in the 1980s that the death penalty should be imposed only in the "rarest ofrare" cases, opponents say the reality is quite different.
Indian courts sentenced 1,455 prisoners to death between 2001 and 2011, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
There are 477 people on death row. Many have been there for years. Human rights groups have been alarmed, however, by the vigor with which President Pranab Mukherjee, who was sworn into office in July 2012, has acted in clearing the backlog of clemency pleas. He has rejected 11, confirming the death penalty for 17 people.
Retired Delhi High Court judge R.S. Sodhi attributes the country's low execution rate to former presidents being "too soft", wary of any backlash from what he described as a divided public.
Sodhi, who said he sentenced five people to death during his time on the bench, now opposes the death penalty.
"A life sentence is the biggest sentence you can give. Imagine rotting for the rest of your life in jail," he said.
It is a view echoed by some women's rights groups and legal experts who had opposed executing the physiotherapist's attackers. Others have invoked the Gandhian principle that "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind".
But top politicians, including the interior minister, had said the death penalty was assured in the case. Such comments were seen by some as adding to pressure on the court to make a populist ruling to satisfy the public outrage over the attack.
"Public opinion and particularly media channels are adding fuel to the fire. It is putting the judiciary on the back foot," said Colin Gonsalves, a lawyer who has appeared in the Supreme Court and is founder director of the Human Rights Law Network.

Due to the case's infamy, the legal process looks set to be difficult. At present it is not entirely clear which lawyers are representing the suspects, <a href="http://www.indianexpress.com/news/delhi-gangrape-3-accused-to-plead-not-guilty-says-lawyer/1056400/1">one source told the Indian Express</a>.
“Generally in a sensational case, many advocates come forward to represent the accused. Being illiterate and already scared, the accused might have signed even more than two advocates. Three Of The Men Accused In Brutal Delhi Gang Rape Are Reportedly Pleading Not Guilty

 But, the <keyword id="69007" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Economic-Forum">World Economic Forum</keyword> data shows that India and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=saudi+arabia+women">Saudi Arabia</a> came last in G20 on a female-to-male ratio on earned income. 
 
Not only this, it was found that Indian women faced greatest workplace inequities and were least likely to speak out. 
 
Harassment at work is faced by one-third of women in G20 countries and 27% of women in India said they had been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=work+harrasment">harassed at work</a>; of those harassed, 53% said they would always or most of the times report it. 
 
Over 9,500 women were polled by independent polling agency Ipsos-Mori to offer insights into the way women feel and how they fare in the workplace. 
 
In line with global findings, nearly 57% Indian women said the biggest concern for them was balancing work and life. The second one was flexible working, while 40% felt that men had better access to jobs and 61% women in India felt they can have a family without damaging their career. 
 
Meanwhile, majority of younger women feel they can have children without damaging their career and are confident they have the same chance of being successful as men in starting their own business.

Though the incident in December 2012 drew international attention for its gruesomeness - a Delhi woman <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/04/world/asia/murder-charges-filed-against-5-men-in-india-gang-rape.html?hp&amp;_r=0">was raped and bludgeoned by six men</a> while taking the bus home from a movie - the new public service announcement puts a vitriolic spin on the practice of everyday street harassment.
The ad was released by the Whistling Woods International Institute on Dec. 16, the one-year anniversary of the Delhi gang rape.
In it, men are seen leering at women while driving mopeds, riding public transportation, and sitting in cafes. Then, the women flip the switch by showing the men just how silly they look checking out a woman who doesn't want their attention.

Rape has continued to be a hot-button issue in India in the year since the incident. Another controversy erupted this past New Year's Eve, when a 16-year-old woman in West Bengal was set on fire and killed after charges were filed against two men who had raped her on consecutive days two months prior. 
The atrocity inspired <a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=260340302">new protests</a> from critics who say the police did not do enough to protect the victim after she reported the rapes and failed to heed the warnings of family members who told authorities they were being harassed by associates of the accused.

A Clever New Ad From India Shows Just How Stupid Men Look When They Creep On Unsuspecting Women

Can it be more shameful for us to learn that India has seen a 288 per cent increase in the arrest of juveniles for committing rapes in 10 years - from 2003 to 2013. Even more disturbing is the fact that arrests of juveniles in the age group 16-18 has increased to almost 60% in this period, which is the highest among all three juvenile age groups. 
 Despite such alarming facts staring at us, we still required a brutal and horrifying Delhi gangrape-murder of a female paramedical student on Delhi streets to realize the threat from rising <keyword id="6793720" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Juvenile-crimes">juvenile crimes</keyword> in the country. It wasn’t until the spine-chilling details of the crime emerged and we learnt that the youngest rapist in the case (17 years’ old) was infact the most brutal one, that we stood up against unfair constitutional concession to dangerous minors like him in India which says those under 18 to be sentenced only to a maximum of three years in a reform facility. That meant no strict trial for him and others like him. 
 
You will be surprised to know that even before the Delhi gangrape incident took place, the statistics on juvenile crimes were startling. 
 
-In 2011, 33,887 juveniles were arrested for crime. Of these, 21,657 fell in the 16-18 years age group. In Delhi itself, of the 925 boys arrested for juvenile crimes in 2011, 567 were in the 16-18 years age group. -The next year 2012 which saw the <keyword id="1499530" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirbhaya-gangrape">Nirbhaya gangrape</keyword> had the number of juvenile offenders steadily increasing. There were 39,822 juvenile arrests and the highest increase in the incidents of crimes committed by them was reported under assault on woman to outrage her modesty (132.3%) followed by insult to the modesty of women (70.5%) and <keyword id="39493" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rape">rape</keyword> (60.3%). Notably, the debate about the trial age of juveniles between 16 and 18 years first began after the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, in which one of the main accused was a juvenile. While the others accused in the case were given death (one committed suicide), the minor accused was sent to a remand home for three years. 
-In 2013, the number of juvenile arrests increased to 43,506 which further up to 48,230 in 2014 when a total of 48,230 juvenile boys and girls were arrested. 
 Despite such a situation, <keyword id="42851" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maneka-Gandhi">Maneka Gandhi</keyword> introduced the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Amendment Bill in Parliament only in August last year. Yes, we did finally wake up to the need of a stricter juvenile law, one that would consider those above 16 who commit “heinous crimes” as adults. Finally, a gruesome rape case had led to massive debates in the political corridors, which were echoing in the Parliament. It was a welcome change for sure, but the crucial Bill passed in Rajya Sabha merely two days after the now 20-year-old ‘juvenile’ rapist of Nirbhaya walked out of jail amid vociferous protests, still awaits President’s assent to become a law. 
 
Had it not been for the narrow scope of the prevailing law, and the new Bill being stuck in the Rajya Sabha due to the Parliament logjam, the consequent new law could have prevented the juvenile rapist, from getting out of jail. The new law would have set an unprecedented example to begin with. Justice was however not only delayed, but denied in one of the most gruesome case the country has ever witnessed. We wish no more Nirbhayas being raped and in the face of increasing crimes by juveniles, all India direly needs now is the Juvenile Justice Act.
