Amid the severe pollution gripping the national capital, <keyword id="19948557" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-metro" source="keywords">Delhi Metro</keyword> recorded its highest-ever daily ridership on November 18, with a staggering 78.67 lakh passenger journeys, according to official data. This figure exceeded the previous high of 77.49 lakh passengers on August 20 of this year, the data said. On November 18, the Yellow Line, which connects Millennium City Centre in Gurugram to Samaypur Badli in Delhi, saw the highest passenger traffic, with a record 20.99 lakh commuters. The Blue Line followed closely with 20.80 lakh passengers, while the Red Line recorded 8.56 lakh commuters, 8.15 lakh in Pink Line and 7.93 lakh in Violet Line. The Magenta Line saw 6.19 lakh passengers, followed by the Green Line with 4.12 lakh commuters, 81,985 in Airport Line, 57,701 in Rapid Metro, and 50,128, in the Grey Line, as per the data. Thick grey haze continued to choke Delhi for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, with pollution levels remaining alarmingly high at 488 in the 'severe plus' category. To encourage more people to use the metro in this scenario, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is running 60 extra trips on weekdays, offering more capacity than usual, an official statement said. The DMRC has recorded its 25 highest passenger journeys since August this year, the statement added. It emphasised that the more people opt for the metro over private vehicles, the greater the reduction in vehicular emissions, which will help improve the air quality of the city and its surrounding areas. In addition, the DMRC has introduced several measures to make travel more convenient for passengers, the statement read. These include the ability to book single or multiple journey tickets through various digital platforms, allowing passengers to plan their journeys anytime and anywhere without the need to stand in queues at the station. Furthermore, partnerships with organisations such as IRCTC, NCRTC, ITPO, and others have made it easier for people to not only travel by metro but also access interconnected travel options, along with various offers and events, all with seamless ease, the statement said. The DMRC also stated that it is one of the most <keyword id="24050954" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="environmentally-friendly-transport" source="keywords">environmentally friendly transport</keyword> options and the first metro system in the world to be registered for carbon credits with the United Nations for its environmental measures.

Similarly, the privately-owned Rapid Metro transit system in Gurugram has also sold the rights to some of its stations to buyers like Vodafone and Micromax. The Bangalore Metro authority is also negotiating <a href="http://www.dnaindia.com/business/report-ikea-infosys-take-bengaluru-delhi-metro-ride-2593584">deals with Ikea and Infosys</a> for naming and leasing rights to stations. The DMRC should pass on some of the benefits to customers by using the funds generated to improve its services, adding two more compartments to each six-carriage train and freezing fares.

Tata Motors will supply, operate and maintain the 12-metre Tata Starbus for a period 12 years, as per the contract. Sathyavathi, Managing Director, BMTC, said, "This order is paramount for Bengaluru's growing need for clean and sustainable urban mass mobility. BMTC is happy to induct modern electric buses that will attract maximum ridership for eco-friendly public transportation." This is the third biggest order that Tata Motors has bagged from a state government in the last one month. The Chief Minister of Delhi, Mr. <keyword id="260213" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword>, in his Independence Day speech has announced that <keyword id="46888" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="DTC">DTc</keyword> and cluster Bus ride will be made free for Women after the festival of Bhai Duj i.e. 29th October onwards. The Delhi government has said it will make public transport free for women in the national capital, citing safety reasons. Women in the national capital can travel free in state-run DTC buses as well as the Delhi Metro, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Monday. The new rules are expected to go into effect in the next two to three months. The concerned departments have reportedly been asked to submit a report on ridership within a week, he told the media. "On all DTC buses, cluster buses and metro trains women will be allowed to travel free of cost so that they have a safe travel experience and can access modes of transport which they were not able to, due to high prices. Public transport has been considered the safest mode of travel,” Kejriwal said at a press conference. However, he urged all the women — who are able to afford the tickets — to make a voluntary contribution by purchasing one.

This is a headache for the Delhi government because it wishes to share losses on a soon-to-be-built Metro line with the central government. The Delhi metro criss crosses three different states that fall within the National Capital Region. The finance department of the DMRC, which is a 50-50 joint venture between the two, clarified last week that losses are calculated for the entire network as a whole as opposed to individual lines - a glaring problem for a metro system that has been built in phases. If there isn’t a system to adequately share the loss from each new phase of the Metro system, then it could delay the construction of future lines. This will affect people living outside Delhi, as the new lines of the Delhi Metro are expected to connect people in the outer National Capital Region to Delhi. The news comes as construction on the Phase IV of the Delhi Metro, which is expected to cost <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/infrastructure/delhi-metro-phase-iv-fate-of-the-project-still-hangs-as-centre-and-delhi-government-work-to-iron-out-issues/1433445/">₹450 billion</a>, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/metro-ph-iv-work-may-not-start-before-6-months/articleshow/67631654.cms">has been stalled</a> after being approved in December 2018. If it gives in, this could reportedly cause the central government to give in to other states with similar demands. The absence of a system to calculate individual losses also affects the arrangement for the existing phases of the Metro network. The Delhi government and central government are required to share costs on Phase I and Phase II while the former is expected to bear all the losses for Phase III. The rail network’s losses have come under scrutiny following two consecutive rate hikes that were imposed in 2017. India’s largest Metro rail does not have a mechanism in place to calculate the profitability of different lines: Report

<ul><li>India will soon have its first ever ‘<keyword id="3429044" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="water-metro">water metro</keyword>’, which will be functional in December 2019. </li><li>Connecting 10 islands along the coastal belt of Kochi, the water metro will be a chain of 23 air-conditioned ferries — electric boats — sailing in the water, that will have capacity to fit in nearly 100 passengers. </li><li>Three years down the line, the water metro will be completely transformed into solar powered boats.</li></ul>India will soon have its <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Kochi/water-metro-to-start-sailing-in-december-this-year/article25876163.ece">first ever ‘water metro’</a> — and no, that does not mean it will have rail tracks spread across in the water. Sailing along the coastal belt of Kochi, the ‘water metro’ will be a chain of 23 air conditioned ferriers — electrical boats — that will connect 10 islands with the capacity to carry 100 passengers. Kochi — a major port city on the south-west coast of India — will be the first hub in India to achieve such a feet where <keyword id="103729" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="water-transport">water transport</keyword> will be integrated a feeder service to the metro. It’s also the first time that so much investment — ₹7.5 billion — has been put in to improve water transport services. The WiFi enabled ferries can sail up to 18 kmph, which is twice the speed of existing ferries. Expected to take off in December 2019, the ‘water metro’ project has the potential to help over 100,000 islanders than live in the area by connecting the 38 jetties across 16 identified routes. Three years down the line, in 2021, the government has plans to come up with 55 more ferries, bringing the total upto 78, that will have the will have the capacity ferry 50 passengers each. There are also plans to transform the entire network to solar powered boats making the ‘water metro’ the first of its kind — not just in India, but in all of Asia. Checks and balances The water metro will be owned by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) and is <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/kochi/2019/jan/01/more-good-news-water-metro-to-be-a-reality-later-this-annum-1918983.html">expected to cost</a> ₹7.5 billion. The project, however, is underway with a long term borrowing of ₹5.76 billion from German bank, KFW. The ‘water metro’ project is important since it will foster the country’s water transport network. In fact, the project has been recommended by the state government under FAME (faster adoption and manufacture of hybrid and electric vehicles) India scheme, which aims to support electric vehicles market to promote eco-friendly vehicles. The 23 ferries themselves will cost ₹45 million, while the upcoming 55 ferries will amount to another ₹26 million. The government is also considering extending the network to Infopark, after they’re able to construct a waterway corridor along the Brahmaputra river. India’s first ever ‘water metro’ has the potential to help 100,000 islanders living in the area

<keyword id="66" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword> wears the crown of achievements with an increase in literacy rate (86.) and sex ratio, according to Economic Survey of Delhi 2014-15 tabled in the <keyword id="6356117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-assembly">Delhi Assembly</keyword> today. 

	The sex ratio has improved from 821 in 2001 to 868 in 2011. The density of population has increased from 9,340 persons per square km in 2001 to 11,297 persons per sq km in 2011. 
 

	According to the survey, the literacy rate has increased from 81.67 per cent in 2001 to 86.34 per cent in 2011. The urban population of the national capital increased from 93.18 per cent in 2001 to 97.50 per cent in 2011. 

	Per capita income of India’s national capital is almost three times its value for the country, which stands at Rs. 87,748. Its per capita income during financial year 2014-15 has increased to Rs 2.41 lakh from Rs 2.12 lakh in the previous fiscal, a rise of nearly 13.50 per cent over the period. 
 

	As per the survey, the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) at current prices during 2014-15 has increased to over Rs 4.51 lakh crore, a growth of 15.35 per cent over the previous year. 
 

	At constant prices, the growth of the Gross State Domestic Product for 2014-15 is 8.2 per cent as compared to 7.4 per cent recorded at national level. 
 As per the survey, the fiscal deficit of <keyword id="6354952" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Government">Delhi government</keyword> was Rs 2,21.25 crore in 2014-15, which is 0.049 per cent of GSDP, as compared to estimated fiscal deficit of 2.35 per cent of all states during the same year. 

	The expenditure incurred on social service sectors in Delhi increased from 48.79 per cent in 10th Five Year Plan to 57.12 per cent in the 11th Five Year Plan and 65.75 per cent for the first three years of the 12th Five Year Plan. 
 

	Tax collection of Delhi government registered a growth of 2.64 per cent in 2014-15 as compared to the growth of 10.60 per cent in 2013-14, it said. 
 

	Delhi has maintained its consistent revenue surplus which was Rs 6,079.53 crore in 2014-15 as compared to Rs 5,615.37 crore in 2013-14. 
 

	As per Census 2011, about 97.50 per cent of the population lived in urban area. Rural area of Delhi reduced from 558.32 sqm in 2001 to 369.35 sqm in 2011. The number of villages has declined from 165 in 2001 to 112 in 2011, as per the survey. 
 

	The decennial population growth of Delhi during 2001-2011 was recorded as 20.96 per cent as compared to around 50 per cent in each decade between 1961 and 1991 and 47 per cent between 1991 and 2001. The population of Delhi as on March 2011 was recorded at 167.53 lakh. 
 
 

	About greenery, the survey said, tree cover area in 2013 was 297.81 sq km, which is 20.08 per cent of the total area of Delhi. 
 

	The total cropped area reduced from 52,816 hectares in 2000-01 to 34,312 hectares in 2014-15. 
 

	The number of agricultural operational holdings has reduced from 25311 in 2005-06 to 20497 in 2010-11, it said. 
 

	The main reasons behind such reduction are fast urbanisation and shift in occupational pattern especially during the last two decades. 
 

	On power sector, it said the electricity supply in Delhi increased from 23,537 million units in 2005-06 to 37,484 million units in 2014-15. The total number of electricity consumer in Delhi is 54.05 lakh in 2014-15 with power consumption recording an annual growth of 3.63 per cent.
 

	Peak demand increased from 3,626 MW in 2005-06 to 5,925 MW in 2014-15. AT&amp;C (Aggregate Technical and Commercial) losses were brought down from 52 per cent in the pre-reform era to 12.83 per cent in 2014-15. 
 As per the survey to encourage <keyword id="6357019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="solar-energy">solar energy</keyword>, a new Solar Photo Voltaic (SPV) Power Plant of 2.14 MWp at <keyword id="6354478" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indira-Gandhi">Indira Gandhi</keyword> International Airport has been successfully installed and commissioned. 

	New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area will be developed as a 'Solar City' by installing SPV panels on rooftops of government buildings, metro stations, bus stops, among other places. 
 

	The total number of motor vehicles on road in Delhi as on March 31, 2015 touched to 88.27 lakh, showing an increase of 6.4 per cent over previous year. 
 

	Total road network of Delhi has increased from 32,131 lane km in 2007-08 to 33198 lane km in 2014-15. 
 

	Average ridership of Delhi Metro was approximately 24 lakh per day during 2014-15 with around 238 Metro Feeder bus services available at 41 metro stations. 
 

	DTC operates 3,781 low-floor AC and non-AC CNG buses and 924 standard-floor buses to take care of about 39 lakh passengers daily, while private sector corporate carriage operators are operating 1,406 cluster buses in 9 clusters. Government has installed CCTV cameras on a pilot basis in 200 DTC buses. 
 

	As per 2011 Census, 81 per cent of total households were having piped water supply system. 
 

	The total number of water connections provided by Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has increased from 17.85 lakhs in 2009-10 to 20.65 lakhs in 2013-14. 
 

	The survey said that about 142 MGD of treated waste water is being utilised for cooling of power plants, horticulture, parks, irrigation as well as crops irrigation. 
 

	According to the report, 35.98 per cent of total population of Delhi is residing in urban areas. There is a near universal electrification and 99 per cent of the households have access to sanitation facilities. 
 

	Close to 31.76 lakh houses (77.6 per cent) were being used exclusively for residential purposes in 2011. The DUSIB has setup 271 night-shelters for the shelter-less population. 
 

	In the education sector, Delhi has a variety of quality schools, colleges and universities as well as centres for research and higher education with male and female literacy rate of 91.03 per cent and 80.93 per cent respectively. 
 

	As per the survey, the literacy rate of Delhi is at around 86 per cent, which is much higher than the all India level of 74 per cent as per the 2011 Census. 
 

	Delhi government has invested massively in education sector for improving the education as around 20 per cent of the total budget of 2014-15 was allocated to the education sector. 
 

	The total number of schools increased from 5043 in 2009-10 to 5798 in 2014-15. Even the number of students enrolled in schools increased from 37.38 lakh in 2009-10 to 44.13 lakh in 2014-15. 
 

	About 25,000 students got admitted under EWS quota in 1200 recognised private unaided.
 
 It is said the number of students in ITIs and Polytechnics increased from 22,070 in 2009-10 to 28628 in 2013-14, with a growth of 30 per cent in five years. More than 16000 trainees were trained under <keyword id="985247" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Skill-Development-Mission">Skill Development Mission</keyword> during 2014-15. 

	As per economic survey, Delhi has a wide network of health sector infrastructure comprising 95 hospitals, 1,389 dispensaries, 267 maternity homes, 973 polyclinics and 16 medical colleges. 
 

	It is said total number of hospital beds increased from 41,706 in 2010 to 48,096 in 2014 simultaneously bed population ratio increased from 2.54 to 2.71 in the same period. 
 

	About 82 per cent of the total births were institutional in 2013. 
 

	The life expectancy in Delhi is of 72 years four years more than the national average of 68. 
 

	In social security and welfare sector around 95 Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) with a network of 10,897 Anganwadi Centers took care of 14.58 lakh pregnant and lactating women and children up to the age of 6 years. 
 

	About 3.32 lakh senior citizens were provided monthly old age pension during 2014-15. 
 

	Around 7.5 lakh girls registered under Ladli Yojana and 84,305 girls received the final maturity value upto March 2015. 
 

	The survey said that around 3400 households were provided financial support of Rs 10,000 under National Family Benefit Scheme during the year 2014-15. 
 

	About 27,000 students of SC/ST/OBC/Minority category studying in recognized unaided public schools got reimbursement of tuition fee. 
 

	Delhi is one of pioneer state in implementation of the National Food Security Act, 2013 with effect from September 1, 2013. It issued 17.68 lakh National Food Security Smart Cards have been issued to eligible households and all the digital Food Security Cards are Aadhar enabled. 
 

	The survey said the number of persons below Poverty Line in Delhi has reduced from 23.3 lakhs (14.2 per cent) in 2009-10 to 16.96 lakhs (9.91 per cent) in 2011-12.

New Delhi, Apr 9 () Detrimental impact of COVID-19 on the overall economy is expected to impact transportation infrastructure, rating agency Icra said on Thursday.According to the ratings agency, transportation infrastructure has a strong correlation with the health of the economy and thereby with the movement in GDP."Therefore, the detrimental impact of Covid-2019 on the overall economy would in turn affect the movement of freight on the road stretches and the air traffic," Icra said in a statement.It said the GDP growth is estimated at 2 per cent for FY21 and added that as far as toll road projects are concerned, the assumption is that entire April, 2020 will be under toll suspension with gradual ramp up over a three month period between May and July, 2020.Subsequently, the traffic growth rates are aligned to rating agency's quarterly growth estimates of GDP, it said, adding that revision in toll rates in alignment with WPI rates is expected to be in the range of 1-4 per cent based on the applicable toll rate revision formulas, which will also aid toll revenues in FY2021.About toll road projects, Rajeshwar Burla, Vice President, Corporate Ratings, Icra said, "Another assumption that was made while drawing toll collection estimates is that NHAI would compensate O&amp;M and interest costs by June, 2020 for the entire lockdown period. After factoring in this compensation, the toll collections for FY2021 are estimated to decline in the range of 6.5 per cent to 8 per cent in FY2021".On the air traffic movement, even prior to COVID, the growth in air craft movement as well as passenger traffic had slowed down considerably during nine months of FY2020, it said.This was driven by increase in fares due to lower number of flights owing to grounding of Jet airways followed by overall sluggishness in demand for travel amid weak business sentiments, it added."Overall, adjusted for the closure of airport operations (excluding cargo), the passenger traffic witnessed de-growth in the range of 3-5 per cent for FY2020. ICRA rates four major private airports – Bangalore, Cochin, Delhi and Hyderabad which together account for around 40 per cent of total air passenger traffic in the country," the statement said.On the performance of airport operators, Burla added, "The impact on airport operators can be viewed in two parts. One, majority of the revenue loss gets trued-up and hence the impact is short-term in nature. ICRA rated airport operators have robust on-balance sheet liquidity which helps them tide over short term cashflow mismatches. Two, the portion of revenues which does not get trued up (70 per cent of non-aero revenues) has to be borne by the operator which would impact their return on capital employed. From the debt serviceability point of view, no issues are being envisaged".On the metro projects, ICRA said that revenues are directly linked to the ridership which is likely to remain under pressure even post lockdown as social distancing norms are likely to continue which discourages usage of mass transit systems.
