Amid the severe pollution gripping the national capital, <keyword id="19948557" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-metro" source="keywords">Delhi Metro</keyword> recorded its highest-ever daily ridership on November 18, with a staggering 78.67 lakh passenger journeys, according to official data. This figure exceeded the previous high of 77.49 lakh passengers on August 20 of this year, the data said. On November 18, the Yellow Line, which connects Millennium City Centre in Gurugram to Samaypur Badli in Delhi, saw the highest passenger traffic, with a record 20.99 lakh commuters. The Blue Line followed closely with 20.80 lakh passengers, while the Red Line recorded 8.56 lakh commuters, 8.15 lakh in Pink Line and 7.93 lakh in Violet Line. The Magenta Line saw 6.19 lakh passengers, followed by the Green Line with 4.12 lakh commuters, 81,985 in Airport Line, 57,701 in Rapid Metro, and 50,128, in the Grey Line, as per the data. Thick grey haze continued to choke Delhi for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, with pollution levels remaining alarmingly high at 488 in the 'severe plus' category. To encourage more people to use the metro in this scenario, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is running 60 extra trips on weekdays, offering more capacity than usual, an official statement said. The DMRC has recorded its 25 highest passenger journeys since August this year, the statement added. It emphasised that the more people opt for the metro over private vehicles, the greater the reduction in vehicular emissions, which will help improve the air quality of the city and its surrounding areas. In addition, the DMRC has introduced several measures to make travel more convenient for passengers, the statement read. These include the ability to book single or multiple journey tickets through various digital platforms, allowing passengers to plan their journeys anytime and anywhere without the need to stand in queues at the station. Furthermore, partnerships with organisations such as IRCTC, NCRTC, ITPO, and others have made it easier for people to not only travel by metro but also access interconnected travel options, along with various offers and events, all with seamless ease, the statement said. The DMRC also stated that it is one of the most <keyword id="24050954" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="environmentally-friendly-transport" source="keywords">environmentally friendly transport</keyword> options and the first metro system in the world to be registered for carbon credits with the United Nations for its environmental measures.

Delhi metro suspends services on select routes till 2 pm as farmer protest intensifies

Addressing a session on the 'future of mobility' at the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2022 on Friday, Anjum Parwez, Managing Director, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (<keyword id="6367448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMRCL" source="Orion">BMRCL</keyword>), said as part of the second and third phase of the project, Bengaluru will have 314 km of metro rail connectivity by 2041. He said construction of metro lines is also progressing well on the airport side. He said the biggest challenge in urban mobility is the integration of multi-modal transport systems and moving people to get into public transport from personalised transport modes. Parwez said urban India was the most neglected area until the 1990s, as urban planning was not in sync with connectivity or mobility issues. He said BMRCL is getting a lot of support from startups in mobility to ensure that commuters have last-mile connectivity. He said the corporation is tying up with mobility providers to get people to reach the nodal point and commute to their workplaces. Parwez said the <keyword id="6367447" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Namma-Metro" source="Orion">Namma Metro</keyword> has recently gone digital with its payment options that include the use of QR code scans and UPI-based payment options which has met with good response from commuters. Also, there is no waiting time for passengers who are in a hurry as there is no need to stand in queues to buy tickets or cards now. He said BMRCL is working on a transit-oriented development where commuters live close to the stations and to the workplace. Besides, the BMRCL also intends to integrate all aggregators by bringing out a mobility card for commuters. He said the corporation is in talks with BMTC to have bus stops at metro stations to help commuters hop on and hop off both modes of transport. He said bike taxis and carpooling should be encouraged although the government of Karnataka had put brakes on their operation. The BMRCL is also working on introducing shopping options for commuters inside and outside the metro stations. He said the BMRCL plans to sell office space in metro stations and provide end-to-end solutions to all the stakeholders. Amit Bhatt, Managing Director of the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), said urbanisation in India is 33 per cent while it is about 80-85 per cent in European and American countries. He said about 66 per cent of urban infrastructure is yet to be built in India as the country is set to see a number of cities being built. The biggest challenge is to ensure zero emission, zero exclusion and zero accidents in urban transport, he said. Vadiraj Krishnamurthy, Vice President of Technology and Innovation, Bosch Global Software Technologies, said the future is software-defined fully programmable vehicles. "The key enablers of urban transport are personalised multi-modal mobility, automated mobility, electrified and connected mobility. Connecting vehicles using technology is an engineering challenge of the future," he said. Bengaluru metro rail on track to complete 175 km of commute by June 2025: BMRCL MD

The metro services were suspended on March 22 to combat the spread of Covid-19. Since then, it has kept all the safety measures in place but the Centre has not allowed it to recommence its services. It is, however, likely to resume in 'Unlock 4.0' in a phased manner and with extensive restrictions. Recently, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said that metro services should be resumed in a phased manner on an experimental basis as the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> situation has improved in the national capital. The challenges , however, will be overcrowding on the platforms, long queues, frisking and seating arrangements in the metro. "All the arrangements are in place. We would require two days' time to sanitize stations as they have been closed from long, set up the system, set staff and <keyword id="1512261" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="train-operators">train operators</keyword> on duty," a top ranking DMRC official told IANS. A batch of trains are stranded in the hub depot and would require dusting, stations would also require thorough cleaning, he said, adding that the basic preparations will be done in two days after the go ahead. "Besides the logistics planning, precautionary measures like social distancing, ground marking will also be in place. Whether or not frequency of the trains will be increased will depend on government's guidelines," the DMRC added. All the measures will be in place to combat the spread of the virus and efforts will be made to make travel safe for the passengers, it said. Recently, DMRC Managing Director Mangu Singh had inspected the <keyword id="132653" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajiv-Chowk-Metro-station">Rajiv Chowk metro station</keyword> to check the functioning of the operational systems and maintenance activities, fuelling speculation that the services will resume soon.

Delhi government to set up another 100 charging stations for electric vehicle

Vandalism was reported from ITO where the Police Headquarters are situated. Police was caught completely unaware. According to official data, there are 264 Metro stations, 2,200 coaches and over 1,100 escalators and 1,000 lifts for common use. Delhi Metro to remain shut until further notice

New Delhi, The <keyword id="61705" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Metro-Rail-Corporation">Delhi Metro Rail Corporation</keyword> (<keyword id="45312" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="DMRC">DMRC</keyword>) has been facing a financial stress with the losses to the tune of ₹1,500 crore during the heydays of the pandemic induced lockdown. Metro operations were halted during lockdown for a period of roughly six months, which drastically affected revenue from passenger travel. At the same time, operating expenses including Operation and Maintenance (O&amp;M) costs had to be continuously paid for the upkeep of the metro network which spans 285 stations and a total track length of 389 km. Additionally, there had been a decline in the non-fare revenue garnered from advertisement as well as shop rentals for the months when metro operations had been suspended. The DMRC has around 400 retail outlets at its stations. Owners of these retail shops have expressed their inability to pay rent to the DMRC on account of no sales. Even now, when the metro services have been resumed, it has been done with sub optimal capacity on account of following strict social distancing norms. In addition, the Delhi Metro had taken a soft loan of ₹35,198 crore from <keyword id="6395487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="japan-international-cooperation-agency">Japan International Cooperation Agency</keyword> (JICA) at a concessional rate of 1.2-2.3 per cent for 30 years. For the financial year 2020-21, DMRC is required to pay ₹1,242.8 crore of which ₹434.1 crore is the interest while ₹808.7 crore is the principal amount. However, till July 2020, DMRC had been able to pay only ₹79.2 crore as interest payment. In the wake of <keyword id="392283" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-distress">financial distress</keyword>, the DMRC has turned to seek financial assistance from the <keyword id="6357307" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Government">Central Government</keyword>, Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh governments. It is learnt that the DMRC has written to the Central and state governments requesting financial help. It is yet to be seen whether the Central and the state governments come to the rescue of the DMRC since they too are reeling under high fiscal deficit. This is for the first time that the Delhi Metro is facing operational losses. Since 2002, the DMRC has never faced an operational loss owing to efficiency in operations and world class service standards. To tide over its financial stress, the Delhi Metro is brainstorming innovative methods of revenue generation. The DMRC is following a two pronged strategy of curtailing expenditure wherever possible and deferment of non-essential expenditure. It has decided to reduce perks and allowances of its employees to about 50 per cent in the coming financial year and also requested the Centre to defer the payment of its loan instalment to JICA for the year 2020-21. A Parliamentary Committee report had suggested innovative methods of revenue realisation for the DMRC. The average non-fare revenue of Metro, across the world, comprising of revenue from advertisements, property leasing and consultancy is close to around 40-50 per cent of total traffic revenue. However, for the DMRC, non-fare revenue accounts for only 15 per cent, which is abysmally low. In order to tackle this challenge, the committee suggested leasing of existing assets i.e. track and rolling stock, leasing of commercial spaces at stations, advertisement fee, parking fee as well as revenue generation by levying a cess on residential property development of nearby areas which have seen enhancement in value owing to metro operations. Delhi Metro facing financial distress with losses of ₹1500 crore due to COVID-19 pandemic

A list of stations where <keyword id="9851890" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="metro-travel-services">Metro travel services</keyword> are being restored is being prepared and will be made public soon, <keyword id="268720" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Delhi-government">the Delhi Government</keyword> said on Sunday, day after the Centre allowed the service in Unlock 4.0 guideline. After being shut for more than five months due to coronavirus or Covid-19 pandemic, <keyword id="61705" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Metro-Rail-Corporation">Delhi Metro Rail Corporation</keyword> (DMRC) will be resuming its services from September 7 onwards in a calibrated manner with new guidelines. Delhi Metro services have been suspended since March 22. For the time being, the Delhi government said, no tokens will be issued to passengers due to its high risk of spreading the virus, and there will be a system of purchasing smart cards at every station and passengers will be able to travel only with smart cards. To ensure contactless travel, digital methods will be enabled to recharge smart cards and all measures will be taken to ensure the <keyword id="9851889" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="mandatory-social-distance">mandatory social distance</keyword> of one meter between passengers in the train, the Delhi government said. "Marking of seats will also be done to ensure social distancing." Also, Metro staff, additional civil defence volunteers will be deployed to ensure that the station does not get crowded. Provision of sanitizers will be made at every station and wearing a mask will be mandatory, it said. If a passenger is found to be travelling in violation of the rules, the Delih government said, the DMRC officials and police officers deployed have been given the power to generate a challan in the name of the violating passenger. The air condition in the coaches will be operated as per new guidelines so that there is a constant flow of fresh air in the train. <keyword id="67779" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-transport">Delhi Transport</keyword> Minister <keyword id="2893545" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kailash-Gahlot">Kailash Gahlot</keyword> in a statement said he was glad that after a long wait, the people of Delhi would be able to travel by metro once again. "We will ensure that social distancing is maintained in the Metros. Thermal screening of the passengers will be done at all the entry points. Tokens will not be issued, commuters can only use smart card and other digital methods of payment for purchasing the ticket. We will resume Metro services by following all COVID protocols so that the general public do not face any kind of difficulties." Resumption of Metro services will provide great relief to the public of Delhi, Gehlot said. "In a way similar to how we successfully restored the bus services in Delhi, we will restore metro services strictly taking care of all the protocols and precautions," the Minister added.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that he was "glad" the mertro services will resume operations in a phased manner. "As per the latest guidelines issued by <keyword id="2835665" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Ministry-of-Home-Affairs">the Ministry of Home Affairs</keyword> under Unlock-4, the Delhi Metro will be resuming its services for public from September 7 onwards in a calibrated manner," <keyword id="902259" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Delhi-Metro-Rail-Corporation">the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation</keyword> (<keyword id="45312" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="DMRC">DMRC</keyword>) said in a statement. Further details on the metro's functioning and its usage by the general public will be shared once a detailed <keyword id="50548" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sop">SOP</keyword> is issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in the next few days, the officials said. Delhi Metro to resume services from Sep 7 in phased manner

<keyword id="48503" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="alstom" source="Orion">Alstom</keyword>, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has been awarded the contract to design, manufacture, supply, test, and commission 312 standard gauge metro cars for <keyword id="6366797" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="delhi-metro" source="Orion">Delhi Metro</keyword> Phase IV expansion by the <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The order worth EUR312 million (Rs 2,643 crore approx.) includes the design and manufacturing of 234 standard gauge metro cars for Line 7 extension, which is 12.558 km of Pink line on the Mukundpur- Maujpur corridor and, the Line 8 extension, which is 28.92 km of Magenta line for the Janakpuri West - RK Ashram corridor, according to a statement from Alstom. Alstom will also design and manufacture of 78 standard gauge metro cars for the 23.622 km Silver line between Aerocity and Tughlakabad, including 15-year maintenance of these 78 cars. The statement said that Alstom would supply its Metropolis trainsets for this order. Metropolis trains offer a unique design, a wide range of configurations and ensure the highest performance due to the perfect combination of proven and reliable components and innovations, the company said. With its extensive track record, low lifecycle costs, and keen focus on passenger experience, Alstom said its Metropolis metros set the standard around the world. Talking about the new contract, Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India Cluster, said that "Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) is amongst the largest urban clusters in the world. Faced with the realities of climate change, such megacities need reliable and sustainable public transport solutions. Alstom is pleased to continue the partnership with Delhi Metro, one of Asia's largest rapid transit systems. Alstom said it had delivered more than 800 metro cars that are in service for the Delhi Metro network. The new trains will be built at Alstom's largest urban rolling stock manufacturing site in Sricity (<keyword id="37102" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="andhra-pradesh" source="Orion">Andhra Pradesh</keyword>), which has a strong portfolio of delivering for major domestic and international projects, according to the company. Currently, the Delhi Metro network consists of about 391 km with 286 stations. The network has now crossed the boundaries of Delhi to reach Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad in <keyword id="6357713" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh" source="Orion">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>, Gurugram, Faridabad, Bahadurgarh and Ballabhgarh in Haryana. In addition to providing rolling stock, Alstom said it had in the past partnered with DMRC for several other projects, including the successful implementation of supply and commissioning of train control and signalling system for DMRC's Red line (L1), Yellow line (L2), Green line (L5), Violet line (L6), Pink line (L7) during Phase I, II and III. Alstom said it has also delivered metro trains for the cities of Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Kochi and is currently delivering trains and signalling for Bhopal-Indore Metro project, Kanpur-Agra Metro project, Mumbai Metro Line 3 and for India's first semi-high-speed rail network -- NCRTC-RRTS -- that connects Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut.
