This is a headache for the Delhi government because it wishes to share losses on a soon-to-be-built Metro line with the central government. The Delhi metro criss crosses three different states that fall within the National Capital Region. The finance department of the DMRC, which is a 50-50 joint venture between the two, clarified last week that losses are calculated for the entire network as a whole as opposed to individual lines - a glaring problem for a metro system that has been built in phases. If there isn’t a system to adequately share the loss from each new phase of the Metro system, then it could delay the construction of future lines. This will affect people living outside Delhi, as the new lines of the Delhi Metro are expected to connect people in the outer National Capital Region to Delhi. The news comes as construction on the Phase IV of the Delhi Metro, which is expected to cost <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/infrastructure/delhi-metro-phase-iv-fate-of-the-project-still-hangs-as-centre-and-delhi-government-work-to-iron-out-issues/1433445/">₹450 billion</a>, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/metro-ph-iv-work-may-not-start-before-6-months/articleshow/67631654.cms">has been stalled</a> after being approved in December 2018. This is largely due to the ongoing friction between the state government of Delhi, which is run by the Aam Aadmi Party, and the BJP-led Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry over the sharing of operational costs and losses. The Delhi government reportedly wants equal loss-sharing and also wants the DMRC to act as a guarantor for the loan extended by <keyword id="6395487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="japan-international-cooperation-agency">Japan International Cooperation Agency</keyword> (JICA) for the phase’s construction. If it gives in, this could reportedly cause the central government to give in to other states with similar demands. The absence of a system to calculate individual losses also affects the arrangement for the existing phases of the Metro network. The Delhi government and central government are required to share costs on Phase I and Phase II while the former is expected to bear all the losses for Phase III. The rail network’s losses have come under scrutiny following two consecutive rate hikes that were imposed in 2017. India’s largest Metro rail does not have a mechanism in place to calculate the profitability of different lines: Report

A survey conducted by <keyword id="61705" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi-Metro-Rail-Corporation">Delhi Metro Rail Corporation</keyword> (<keyword id="45312" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="DMRC">DMRC</keyword>) has said that the commuters of Delhi Metro are happy with its services. The survey was conducted in May this year. 
 
The survey also revealed that most commuters find beggars and encroachments around metro stations ‘dissatisfying.’ According to the survey, commuters gave a rating of 5.63 (on a scale of 10 points) for issues related to these aspects outside metro stations. 
 
"An action plan has been prepared and the departments concerned have been instructed to initiate remedial action," a DMRC spokesperson said. 
 
The commuters said they were largely satisfied with the quality of service of Delhi Metro. The survey covered 1,09,188 people who were asked to rate various aspects of metro service. 
 
On an average, commuters gave a rating of 8.24 for information available at stations, 8.13 for travel, 8.08 for the smart card facility, 8 for security and 7.83 for behaviour of customer care representatives and their alertness. 
 
The survey was conducted according to EN13816, which is a European survey system extensively used to assess the functioning of public transportation systems.

The DMRC is going to build 29.7 km <keyword id="6358143" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Noida-Metro">Noida Metro</keyword> line on <keyword id="70990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Solar-power">solar power</keyword> within a year. Not only the metro line, solar power will be used to run all 21 stations along with its workplaces and train depot. 
 
Noida Metro will emerge as the most environment friendly Metro project in light of the fact that the entire system will be running on solar power. 
 <keyword id="252738" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Santosh-Yadav">Santosh Yadav</keyword>, the managing director of Noida Metro, said the target for Noida Metro will be generating an amount of 12MW of solar power everyday. In order to do so, solar panels on the rooftops of all stations, footbridges, its main office building, the depot and parking lot boundary walls will be installed. 
 
"We will also apply for a diamond rating for our buildings by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). Metro's total power consumption can be reduced further with better engineering practices, sleek design, recycle and reuse,” Yadav told ET. 
 
Supplementary power connection will only be used as backup or when there will be a glitch. The corridor’s power consumption estimated by officials is less than 12 MW. . If there is a surplus, Metro will route it to the conventional power grid and claim a rebate on its power usage, cutting operational costs. 
 
"Each of the stations will be powered by its own green energy. Rooftops of stations will have solar panels and the buildings will fitted with LED bulbs. The two sub-stations that will supply power for trains running on the corridor will also support solar panels,” Yadav told ET. 
 
DMRC is building the corridor and is also recycling construction waste. "Wasted concrete is being used to make kerbstones and tiles, which will be used at stations. We are also using wasted iron for grilles and railings of stations. We are using fly ash in construction, preserving top soil. The water used in our train depot shall be 100% recycled. It will be a zero-discharge facility,” Yadav told ET. 
 Noida Metro Railway Corporation’s headquarters in Sector 29 is going to be the first building in the <keyword id="53426" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NCR">NCR</keyword> to fully generate its own solar power. "We will generate about 30 kW electricity for the building,” Yadav said.

Delhi Metro put on 'red alert' citing security threat after India abolished Kashmir's right to make its own laws

New Delhi, Feb 12 () Siemens Ltd on Wednesday said the company has installed an efficient power supply system with advanced passenger safety features in the Kolkata East-West Metro Project. The project of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (KMRCL) will be inaugurated on Thursday, Siemens said in a statement. "Siemens has successfully implemented an efficient power supply system with advanced passenger safety features for Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL). Siemens-powered metro line is to be inaugurated in Kolkata (tomorrow)," the company said in a statement. The company added that it has designed, tested and commissioned power supply systems, including cutting-edge supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA) and operation control centre and advanced intelligent infrastructure features such as passenger safety and digital simulation. The solution also includes digital simulation of the entire metro rail corridor in Kolkata. The Kolkata East-West Metro Project is a rapid transit system connecting Kolkata and Howrah, it said. It has a total length of 16.1 kilometers and serves 12 stations. The installation of the system has made six elevated stations with the operation control centre and depot at central park along the 5.5-kilometer route operational. Siemens Head (Mobility) Tilak Raj Seth said, "We take great pride in partnering KMRCL in this prestigious project. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on Tuesday signed a <keyword id="78814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="memorandum-of-understanding">memorandum of understanding</keyword> (<keyword id="6368586" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="MoU">MoU</keyword>) with the <keyword id="44991" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ghaziabad">Ghaziabad</keyword> Development Authority (GDA) for the 9.41 km long Metro expansion from <keyword id="185815" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dilshad-Garden">Dilshad Garden</keyword> in Delhi to Ghaziabad’s <keyword id="523007" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="new-bus-stand">New Bus Stand</keyword>. The cost of the project is estimated to be around Rs 1,770 crore. The corridor is expected to be completed by June 2017. 

	According to Metro officials, work will be expedited to commission the project ahead of schedule. Delhi Metro MD Mangu Singh said, "Work on technical studies, including soil profiling and ensuring proper power supply for the project, will immediately start. The actual work on ground can be seen in the next three months.”

 The nine stations are namely HUDA City Centre, <keyword id="6366601" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajiv-Chowk">Rajiv Chowk</keyword>, New Delhi, Kirti Nagar, Guru Dronacharya, MG Road and <keyword id="208523" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Noida-Sector">Noida Sector</keyword> 15, Noida Sector 16 and <keyword id="209917" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Noida-City-Centre">Noida City Centre</keyword>, where frisking gates have been improved, more ticket vending machines have been assembled.

Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi launched the feature in partnership with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. The feature allows one to check schedules for the Delhi Metro, based on pricing as well as timing. "In our first five cities in the world, half a million users have been using the public transport system in Uber app," said Khosrowshahi at a press conference in Delhi. "DMRC is embracing technology and we want to commend them for that. India is a huge opportunity to make sure its cities are built for people and not for cars," he said. In the near future, Uber also aims to have dedicated pick up spots at metro stations, charging stations for Electric Vehicles, vehicles for physically disabled, self driving cars and bikes and more. India is a fundamental part of Uber's growth story. Profitability characteristics and business in India are improving. India's market is a gateway for the rest of the developing world, said the Uber CEO. There were also mentions of its latest product--Uber bus. "Uber bus service is a new product that we have launched <keyword id="6526136" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="18-months">18 months</keyword> ago. We are testing and learning to understand how the service works. As the product matures, it will be specifically marketed for cities like Delhi," said Khosrowshahi. Partnering with Delhi Metro, Uber hopes to offer seamless travel to users. In <keyword id="6361586" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gurgaon">Gurgaon</keyword>, Uber Moto sees 25% of its trips starting from metro stations. "We have discussed that 210 metro stations in Delhi, where Uber will have a designated pick up spots. Inside the stations too, Uber will place information desks and booking facilities," said Dr Mangu Singh, Managing Director of DMRC. Khosrowshahi also spoke about <keyword id="129243" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword>’s latest comment on car sales being affected by the likes of Uber and Ola. “One of the enemies of innovation is established businesses. We are moving from a world of ownership to a world of services. The dream is now to have freedom. Sometimes car ownership is a trap that prevents innovation. India doesn't need to be trapped by these established models, India can be a trailblazer for other established countries,” he said. The Uber CEO also has big expectations from India. He said, “India is going to be a big source of innovation. One example is the Uber Lite app, was designed and built in India and moved to over 30 countries around the world.” Uber is also set to hire more in India. “We are very proud of the engineering and product talent based out of Bengaluru and <keyword id="6354552" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hyderabad">Hyderabad</keyword>. We have a goal to double the headcount in these offices and have 1,000 people to build innovative products out of India,” said Manik Gupta, Uber's chief product officer.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi launches its public transport feature in Delhi, its first for Asia

Owing to several requests and complaints, the officials at <keyword id="6366797" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi-Metro">Delhi Metro</keyword> Rail Corporation have revived the minimum recharge amount of Rs 100 at the counters. It is the third change to be induced in four months. In May this year, the minimum recharge amount was increased to Rs 200 from Rs 100. In July, DMRC reverted the decision, but only for recharges at Token Vending Machines (TVMs).

	 

	The 83 metro stations have around 170 TVMs, which was the reason behind the July decision. However, to use these TVMs, you need to be tech savvy. This seems to be a challenge as the Delhi Metro has commuters from all sections of society.

	 

	Thinking about the technically challenged section of commuters, the decision has been reverted altogether and the authorities would soon announce the decision.

	 

	Almost 70 per cent of Delhi Metro commuters use smart cards, getting 10 percent discount and saving time by not standing in recharge queues, and this would come as a welcomed change, or rather a reversal.
