Although the rainfall plummeted the national capital's temperature, it has however disrupted normal life. Massive traffic jams were witnessed in ITO, Ring Road, nearby area of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Barapullah, Delhi-Noida border, Chilla Border, UP Gate, Delhi-Gurugram road and in Palam. In an advisory to commuters, the <keyword id="6357103" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi-traffic-police" source="Orion">Delhi Traffic Police</keyword> said: "As per IMD report thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds would occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi. Commuters are advised to plan their journey accordingly." Apart from traffic jams, waterlogging was reported in all the low lying areas of the city. "Waterlogging was reported in the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Pul Prahladpur underpass, <keyword id="1475643" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zakhira-flyover" source="Orion">Zakhira Flyover</keyword>, IP Estate, Vinod Nagar, Azadpur market underpass, Loni Road roundabout and near Pragati Maidan," an official said. Meanwhile, flight operations at the IGI Airport were also disrupted. The airport authorities have requested the passengers to reach out to the concerned airline for updated flight information. According to the authorities, multiple flights were delayed, while two have been diverted so far to Amritsar and Jaipur. Delhi Police fires tear-gas shells on farmers near Akshardham temple and Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar

The country would now get to experience world-class express highways with the Government’s plans to upgrade eight <keyword id="6373156" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Highways">National Highways</keyword>, including Delhi-Jaipur, Delhi-Chandigarh and Delhi-Agra, Parliament was informed today. The stretches approved for upgradation into expressways include 249 km Delhi-Chandigarh section of NH-1 and NH-22; 334 km of Bangalore-Chennai section of NH-4; 261 km of Delhi- Jaipur section of NH-8, and 277 km Kolkata-Dhanbad stretch of NH-2, Minister of state for Road Transport and Highways Pon Radhakrishnan said to <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> today. 

	The National Highways to be upgraded also include 66 km Delhi-Meerut section of NH-58; 200 km of Delhi-Agra section of NH-2 and 135 km length of Eastern Peripheral Expressway, he said.
 

	"Feasibility study of above projects is in different stages. The work shall be taken up after finalisation of feasibility study and completion of land acquisition activity," he said.
 The Minister said, "<keyword id="6377129" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Government-Of-India">Government of India</keyword> had earlier approved a plan for constructing 1,000 km of expressways under NHDP PHASE - VI at a cost of Rs 16,680 crore on DBFOT (design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis." 

	In a separate reply to the Lower House, he also said that construction of a six-lane expressway is envisaged at centre with 4-lane highways on both sides from Delhi/Uttar Pradesh border section of NH-24 for which bids have been invited on hybrid annuitymode.
 Last month, Road Transport and Highways Minister <keyword id="26680" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nitin-gadkari">Nitin Gadkari</keyword> said work on 10 expressway projects will start soon and once completed they will not only reduce travel time between major cities but would also contribute significantly towards the economic growth. 

	"All these express highways are going to be world class matching the quality and specifications in advanced nations and once completed would result in huge savings in fuel cost," he had said.
 

	He also said most of the projects will be concrete cement expressways.
 

	The Indian road network of 33 lakh km is the second largest in the world and consists of 92,851 kms of National Highways, which constitute only 1.7 per cent of the road network but carry about 40 per cent of the total road traffic.

Eight National Highways to get a world-class upgrade

Union Environment Minister <keyword id="119642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prakash-Javadekar">Prakash Javadekar</keyword> on Thursday flagged off 50 inspection teams of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for field visits in Delhi-NCR to keep a watch on <keyword id="10111530" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="pollution-hot-spots">pollution hot spots</keyword> during the winter season and urged the Punjab government to curb stubble burning. He said stubble burning, however, is not a major factor for <keyword id="55910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Pollution">air pollution</keyword> in Delhi-NCR. "Only 4 per cent pollution is due to stubble burning. Ninety-six per cent of it is due to local factors like biomass burning, garbage dumping, unpaved roads, dust, construction and demolition activities, etc.," he told reporters at his residence in Delhi. Javadekar said his throat choked with the smoke from burning of crop residue during a recent visit to Ludhiana. "I appeal to the Punjab government to swing into action and curb stubble burning. I went to attend a programme in Ludhiana last year. On my way back, my throat choked due to the smoke from stubble burning even when I was in an air-conditioned car. It is harmful for everyone, including people living there. The Punjab government should ensure there is not much stubble burning this time," the minister said. Addressing the nodal officers of the CPCB teams, he said, "You will work for next two months and take note of all activities and complaints. You will inspect all factors. You have the right to file a report on your observations and strict action will be taken." He said, "The way corona warriors are appreciated, you (CPCB officials) all are warriors fighting pollution and we highly appreciate you. We will meet after two months." The minister said that while on one hand there is stubble burning, on the other there is garbage being burnt by public and "even by karamchaaris". "We have to keep a watch on that too," he said. Javadekar urged people to avoid congested routes and opt for other routes even if they are longer. "I appeal to people to not go to already congested areas and take longer routes. Use cycles for nearby work," he said. The 50 CPCB teams will make extensive field visits from October 15 to February 28 next year and focus on hot spots where air pollution is aggravated, the environment ministry said. They will visit Delhi and NCR towns Noida, Ghaziabad, Meerut in Uttar Pradesh; Gurugram, Faridabad, Ballabgarh, Jhajjar, Panipat, Sonepat in Haryana; and Bhiwadi, Alwar, Bharatpur in Rajasthan. Prakash Javadekar flags off 50 inspection teams, says only 4% pollution in Delhi-NCR due to stubble burning

When <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=prime+minister+narendra+modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a> laid the foundation stone of three road projects worth more than Rs 13, 800 crore at Delhi-Haryana border, hopes of decongested traffic and smooth connectivity rose once again. 
 
The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=road+projects">road projects</a> are expected to be complete soon as Modi government said building roads was the fastest means to bring <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=economic+growth">economic growth</a>. 
 
"Bharatmala will connect 123 districts to national highways. Under the Setu Bharatam project, we'll be building over 400 new bridges," said Modi. 
 
In past six months, the government has rolled out stuck projects worth Rs 4 lakh crore. 
 
While laying the foundation stone, Modi lauded <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nitin+gadkari">Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari</a> and said that no one has done as much for the roads and highways sector in the past 60 years as Gadkari has done. 
 
These projects were stuck since 2006, the government said. The total length of these projects is 341 km. 
 
"These projects will change things for Delhi and NCR. Not only traffic will come down but the vehicular pollution will also be under control in the capital," said Gakari. 
 
The government will also soon start work on Delhi-Meerut expressway at the tune of Rs 6,500 crore.

3 road projects worth Rs 13k crore have just received the go-ahead!

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=highway">highway</a> connectivity to India’s prominent <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Hindu">Hindu</a> shrines is getting easier, thanks to PM Narendra Modi. Soon after the plan for highway connectivity for the coveted four Hindu religious shrines (Char Dham) in Uttarakhand has been finalised, the BJP led NDA government is planning an expressway between Delhi and Katra, the base for pilgrims going to Vaishno Devi in Jammu and Kashmir. 
This expressway once operative would be 600 km long, the longest in India. 
 
The expressway would pass through <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Haryana">Haryana</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=punjab">Punjab</a> and Jammu &amp; Kashmir and would cost more than Rs 15,000 crore. 
"A consultant to study the feasibility of the project is being appointed. It will significantly improve connectivity between Delhi and Srinagar as a national highway is already being built between Jammu and Srinagar," a senior government official revealed. 
 
Road transport &amp; highways minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed that his ministry was working on the plan. 
Presently, travel time from Delhi to Katra is around 11-12 hours, which would be reduced to half once the expressway is built. 
 The government has approved plans for the construction of about 1,000 km of expressways at an estimated cost of Rs 16,680 crore. The approved corridors are Delhi-Chandigarh, Bengaluru-Chennai, Delhi-Jaipur, Delhi-Meerut, Kolkata-Dhanbad, Delhi-Agra and Vadodara-Mumbai. 
 
"It could be a hightraction project as the traffic flow, both private vehicles and freight, is good on the route," the official added. 
While final meetings would be taking place soon, an official said, getting land wouldn’t be of problem as the states of Haryana, Punjab and J&amp;K have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BJP">BJP</a> in power. The government is already working on a land pooling policy for expressway projects, where a portion of the land acquired from farmers will be returned to them after development.

By Namita Tewari New Delhi, Apr 19 () Turning the COVID-19 lockdown into an "opportunity", highways regulator NHAI is working on a war footing to resolve disputes worth a staggering Rs 80,000 crore, besides reviewing projects to expedite work. "During this lockdown period, we are holding five to seven video conferences every day to find resolution to disputes through reconciliation to be ready with all the ground work. "Normally what would take months together has been done during the lockdown," NHAI Chairman S S Sandhu, who was on an inspection of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway project when contacted him, said. Sandhu and other top brass of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have been on an inspection spree of projects, taking the benefit of no traffic on otherwise congested highways. NHAI, an official said, has at least 180 cases in arbitration involving a sum of about Rs 80,000 crore. Sandhu told that as a result of intensive meetings, NHAI is in a position to place all matters before the reconciliation committees for speedy disposal of disputes. "Next week we are likely to take up the matters, work on which have been done, with the conciliation committees for final dispute redressal processes," Sandhu said. He said the exact number of cases for which work has been done cannot be assessed at the moment as multiple officials are working on different projects and the compilation will be done soon. Out of the 180 cases involving about Rs 80,000 crore, the officials are currently working on 86 cases worth about Rs 31,000 crore, a source said. "Work is almost complete on 33 cases with a solid ground ready for disposal of these by the reconciliation committees. These involve a sum of Rs 12,356 crore," the source added. Work is going on a war footing in other 43 cases involving a sum of Rs 20,000 crore, he added. The projects under arbitration include Delhi-Agra highway section, Kishangarh-Udaipur road and Chenani-Nashri project, the official said. The highways builders involved in these projects include ILFS Transportation, Madhucon, Gammon, HCC and Gayatri Projects, among others. The official said once the conciliation happens, the NHAI payout will be much lesser than the amount projected now as arbitration is a long-drawn process where payout is about 25 per cent but in conciliation, whatever amount is finalised is paid immediately. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has asked the ministry and NHAI officials to convert the coronavirus "crisis into opportunity". Preparations are afoot to re-start work on highway projects expeditiously in association with the states, while following the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Gadkari told : "I have asked NHAI to resolve all cases in three months span." The NHAI has achieved record 3,979 kms of highways construction in 2019-20. NHAI turns lockdown into opportunity to redress disputes, review projects on war footing

New Delhi, Jan 31 () The government has decided to invest more than Rs 100 lakh crore on building modern infrastructure in the country with a special emphasis on connectivity, President Ram Nath Kovind said on Friday.
 In a bid to improve connectivity, the government will also focus on creation of new highways, waterways, airways and I-ways (IT infrastructure), the President said addressing the joint sitting of both houses of Parliament, on the first day of the Budget session here.
 "The poor and the middle-class hope and aspire for a modern 21st century infrastructure in the country. To fulfil this aspiration of the people more than Rs 100 lakh crore will be invested in the next five years. With a special emphasis on connectivity, the government is also focusing on creation of new highways, new waterways, new airways, and new I-ways," the President said.
 Rapid progress is being made towards providing better public transport facilities in urban areas, Kovind said adding, metro facility has now been extended to 18 cities in the country.
 So far, 670-km of metro lines have been operationalised, and work on another 930-km is underway, he said and added the residents of Delhi and NCR have greatly benefitted from the construction of Delhi-Meerut Expressway, as well as from Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways.
 He further said inland waterways are also being developed by the government and in December 2019, for the first time, container cargo reached Pandu in Assam via National Water Way-2.
 Under the Jal Marg Vikas Project, the multi-modal terminal at Haldia on River Ganga and the navigation lock at Farakka will be completed this year, Kovind said adding, it is also our endeavour to operate large transport cargo vessels on River Ganga by next year.
 On air connectivity, he said about 35 lakh people have so far travelled by air under the UDAN scheme and last year, 335 new air routes have been approved.
 Rural roads contributed significantly to the country's infrastructure, he said and added 1.25 lakh kilometers road will be constructed and upgraded under Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojna.
 Rural roads have now been expanded to every corner of the country through the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana, he said adding third phase of the programme has been launched to strengthen rural roads and connect them to schools, hospitals and agricultural markets.
 On Noth East connectivity he said: "More than the physical distance of the North East from Delhi, it was the emotional disconnect that disheartened the people of the region. My Government has transformed this situation by working tirelessly during the last five years. Work is being done at an unprecedented pace in the North East to enhance connectivity, strengthen infrastructure and make people's lives easier."
 As a result of the government's efforts, he said by 2022, the capitals of Sikkim, Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland will be connected with the rail network.
 "The work on Agartala-Akhaura rail link is also progressing at a fast pace. In the year 2022, the construction of the new airport being built at 'Holongi' in Arunachal Pradesh will also be completed," he added.
 The President said, during the last few years, there has been extraordinary development of infrastructure related to tourism.
 "Recently a nationwide programme has been launched from Kolkata for conservation and beautification of the heritage buildings of the country. The tourism sector is also being strengthened by the modern infrastructure being developed under Swadesh Darshan and PRASAD schemes. New records are being created every day in the number of tourists visiting the 'Statue of Unity', the statue of Sardar Patel; which is the tallest in the world," he emphasised.

New Delhi, Nov 27 () Terming huge crude oil import a "big economic challenge" for the country, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday urged automakers to focus on alternative fuel vehicles as well and ensured Government's support in the venture.
 Gadkari also stressed the need for diversifying agriculture towards power and energy to meet the goal of bio-fuel generation.
 "I am giving you the confidence from the government that we are all supporter of this sector...you have lot of apprehensions about the future policy but the government is keenly interested to support and encourage you for new development (alternative fuel vehicles). ....go ahead with old manufacturing but also encourage alternative fuel," Gadkari said addressing 'NuGen Mobility Summit 2019' .
 He said the government's approach is "import substitute, pollution free and cost effective" alternative to crude oil and the prime minister has specially given instructions to the Cabinet Secretary and Principal Adviser to work in this direction including on coal gasification and making methanol from that.
 "The problem which is related to our economy is that our import bill is 20 per cent of our capital cost...it is a big economic challenge for the country. ..This is the time we have to find out some solution," the minister said stressing that the automobile sector is one sector which provides good revenue to the government with maximum employment potential.
 Promising that the problems of the automobile sector will be resolved, Gadkari said the intention of the government was not to create obstacles for them.
 Citing popular brands like Toyota and Hyundai, he said when these can manufacture flexi engines in Brazil why can't they do so in India where consumers can choose from various options including the alternative fuel.
 The road, transport and highways minister said India is the fastest growing economy and by 2030 it is expected to become the third largest economy in the world.
 Apart from crude oil imports, another major problem faced by the economy is in the agriculture sector with surplus production of sugar, rice and wheat, he said adding that there is a need for diversification of agriculture and forest towards producing alternative fuel power and energy.
 About highways sector he said the road construction pace has reached 30 km a day and the government was constructing 22 new express highways including Rs 10,000 crore Dwarka express highway.
 "Meerut Express Highway being constructed at a cost of Rs 9,000 crore is going to be complete before March...My ministry is spending Rs 50,000 crore for road construction around Delhi," he said.
 Besides, he said 60 per cent of the contracts for Rs one lakh crore Delhi-Mumbai express highway on a new alignment passing through tribal areas have already been awarded and it would prove to be a growth engine for the country.
 On policy related to scrapping of old vehicles he said it is in final stages and India will become the biggest automobile hub after the policy comes into force given availability of cheap labour, skilled manpower and technology. NAM \

New Delhi, Jun 28 () With a record spike of nearly 20,000 cases in a day, India's COVID-19 tally mounted to 5,28,859 on Sunday and the death toll rose to 16,095, while Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh announced a door-to-door survey joining several states and UTs which have opted for the exercise in their efforts to check the surge. The Centre noted that recoveries exceeded active COVID cases by over one lakh, stressing that "proactive steps" taken by it along with the states and union territories are showing "encouraging results". The number of active cases stands at 2,03,051, while 3,09,712 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, according to the updated data. "Thus, around 58.56 per cent patients have recovered so far," an official said. "The graded, preemptive and proactive steps taken by the Government of India along with the states and UTs for prevention, containment and management of COVID-19 are showing encouraging results," the Union Health Ministry said in a statement. India saw a surge of 3,38,324 infections from June 1 till date as the lockdown restrictions eased. The country reported 19,906 cases on Sunday. This is the fifth consecutive day that coronavirus infections have increased by more than 15,000. As the country enters the "unlock" phase, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, it will have to focus on defeating coronavirus and bolstering the economy. India has always transformed adversities into stepping stones to success and this year won't be different, he said. He said people have to remain more vigilant compared to the lockdown period. "Always remember, if you do not wear a mask, do not observe the two-yard social distancing norms or do not take other precautions, you are putting others at risk besides yourselves, especially the elderly and children at home," he cautioned in his monthly "Mann ki Baat" radio address. Speaking in the same vein, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said the restrictions will continue even after June 30 as the crisis is not over. "Even if I am not using the term lockdown, do not misunderstand and lower your guard. In fact, we need to show more stringent discipline," he said. "We can't leave this war halfway in this final phase. I am sure that you will continue to cooperate with the government to ensure that lockdown is not reimposed," he said in a televised address. The unlock process, dubbed Mission Begin Again by the state government, is being gradually implemented to put the economy back on track, Thackeray said. Maharashtra has reported the highest number of cases at 1,59,133 followed by Delhi at 80,188, Tamil Nadu at 78,335, Gujarat at 30,709, Uttar Pradesh at 21,549, Rajasthan at 16,944 and West Bengal at 16,711, according to the ministry data. Mumbai Police urged the city residents not to move beyond two-km radius of their homes for the purpose of exercise or visiting shops and salons, in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus. Movement beyond two km is permitted only for attending office or medical emergencies, a senior police official said, adding that movement outside this radius for shopping is strictly prohibited. With the further easing of coronavirus-induced curbs in the state, some salons opened in Mumbai on Sunday after a gap of three months while many remained closed due to lack of manpower. Thackeray also said the 'Chase the Virus' initiative that received good results in worst-hit Mumbai will now be expanded to other parts of the state. As part of the campaign, 15 close contacts of a COVID-19 patient will be compulsorily kept in institutional quarantine. It was launched on May 27. In Delhi, where authorities are implementing a revised strategy after a major surge in cases, the number of COVID-19 containment zones has risen from 218 to 417 after a re-mapping of such areas, while around 2.45 lakh people have been screened in a mammoth house-to-house survey to check the spread of COVID-19 Officials said the count of containment zones is expected to jump further as the authorities in some districts were yet to complete the task of redrawing such areas following the Centre's directions. "We have screened around two lakh people for COVID-19 in house-to-house survey being conducted across the city. Also, 45,000 people have been screened in COVID-19 containment zones," an official told . The process of screening every household has to be completed by July 6. According to the 2011 Census, there were over 34.35 lakh households in the national capital, including 33.56 lakh in urban areas and 79,574 in rural areas. Other states with more than 10,000 cases are Telangana (13,436), Haryana (13,427), Madhya Pradesh (12,965), Andhra Pradesh (12,285) and Karnataka (11,9230). Stepping up surveillance, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh will also conduct house-to-house survey like Delhi, Goa, Odisha and Jharkhand. Uttar Pradesh's Additional Chief Secretary (Medical and Health) Amit Mohan Prasad said the state will launch a large-scale campaign from Meerut division in July, where house-to-house survey will be undertaken similar to the pulse polio immunisation. "It will be carried out in containment and non-containment zones," he said. The Madhya Pradesh government said it will launch a 'Kill Corona' campaign from July 1 to control the spread of COVID-19 in the state. Under the campaign, door-to-door survey will be conducted and tests would also be done on citizens for other diseases as well, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said during a virtual review meeting on the COVID-19 pandemic Chouhan said during the 15-day campaign, 2.5 lakh tests will be carried out and 15,000 to 20,000 samples would be collected daily, according to a press release. In Karnataka, Bengaluru police said criminal cases will be filed against those flouting face mask and social distancing rules and public can call police in case someone refuses to follow the COVID-19 preventive norms in the city, While police and civic body officials will patrol city roads and enforce the mask rule and social distancing, the public can also do their bit and ask every other person to follow them, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao said said in a series of tweets as the government stepped up efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus. COVID: Cases surge to 5.28 lakh; MP, UP announce house-to-house survey; Centre says 'encouraging' results after proactive steps

The government is planning to award 100 highway projects on PPP next year, Union Minister <keyword id="26680" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nitin-gadkari">Nitin Gadkari</keyword> said today. 

	Asking investors to change their perception about public-private-partnership (PPP), the Road Transport and Highways Minister said all problems pertaining to the mode have been addressed and this year seven projects worth Rs 11,500 crore have already been awarded in contrast to a nil last year.
 "The government will award 100 projects on PPP mode next year. Under the hybrid model, we will give you on platter projects with land acquisition and <keyword id="6356826" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="environment">environment</keyword> clearances. 40 per cent cost will be borne by us while 60 per cent will be funded by you. Of the 60 per cent, banks will provide 30 per cent of the requirement," Gadkari said at India PPP summit by FICCI. 

	He said investors need not worry at all and just "change their perception about PPP" as in the present hybrid model even the toll collection will be done by the government adding PPP has received good response this year.
 

	The Minister said the government was planning to float tenders for about 18 projects by December.
 

	He said 95 per cent problems pertaining to PPP projects have been addressed and of the 283 projects, 44 were terminated.
 

	About Delhi-Jaipur Highway, he said the Rs 1,700 crore project will be completed by December as 85 per cent of the long-delayed project is completed while problems related to Delhi-Haridwar and Ranchi-Jamshedpur highways were being addressed.
 

	He said highways ministry has no dearth of funds but was lacking on two fronts - shortage of contractors and capacity constraints.
 Expressing commitment to transform highways network, he said Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> will do "bhoomi pujan" for access-controlled Rs 7,000 crore eastern highway project to decongest Delhi soon while Delhi-Meerut highway will be developed as a green expressway with 14 lanes on NH-24. 

	The national highways length would be increased to 1.5 lakh km from 1 lakh km at present as it does not match up to the 10 per cent annual growth in vehicles, he said.
 

	He added that apart from Buddha circuit, 1000 km of highways will be constructed to link 'char dhams'. Besides, one per cent of the highways construction cost will be set aside for plantation along the roads, which in turn would generate five lakh employment. He added that government also plans to build a number of expressways including Delhi-Mumbai, Mumbai-Nagpur, Delhi-Ludhiana and Bengaluru-Chennai.
 

	The Minister said both shipping and highways would contribute at least 2 per cent to the country's GDP.
 

	Also, he added that all the 12 major ports and SCI, DCI and Cochin Shipyard would post a profit of around Rs 6,000 crore this year.
 Gadkari said three new ports would be built in <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, <keyword id="6357783" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="West-Bengal">West Bengal</keyword> and Maharashtra. 

	He said 1,200 roadside amenities will be built besides 5,000 driving centres across the country to check corruption. 
 

	NHAI and builders would now solve their disputes amicably instead of going to courts as the PMO also is of the view to solve them through talks, he said. 
 

	Road Transport and Highways Secretary Vijay Chhibber said the PPP mode picked up last year after going through a rough patch for three years and this year, the government will award road projects totalling 10,000 km and complete 6,500 km, he said. 
 

	Last year, the government awarded projects totalling 8,000 km and completed 4,000 km. 
 

	Of the 1 trillion investment in infrastructure as per the 12th Five Year Plan, one-tenth ($95 billion) will go to road sector and private players will contribute about 50 per cent of it, he said. 
 

	Chhibber said the government had taken a number of initiatives to address the issues including rescheduling of premium, easy exit policy, one-time fund infusion and 20 amendments in concessionaires agreements. 
 

	Also, the government is considering compensation to developers in case the delays in projects were attributable to authorities. 
 

	He also said that a Rs 6 cess on diesel and petrol was contributing Rs 50,000 crore to the sector annually. 
 

	He said the government is considering monetisation of highways and of the 6,000 km under EPC, 200-300 km will be monetised this year.
