Mortal remains of late former Indian President <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=APJ+Abdul+Kalam">APJ Abdul Kalam</a> arrived at Palam Airport in New Delhi from Guwahati on Tuesday. 
 Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, <keyword id="6354814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="prime-minister-Narendra-Modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword>, along with Three Service Chiefs paid homage to Kalam. 
 
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal were also present. 
 
 
 
Public can pay homage to the late President from 3pm onwards at 10 Rajaji Marg in New Delhi. 
 
 
 
The last rites will take place at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. 
 
People from all walks of life took to social media and paid homage to the apolitical President. Kalam led the scientific team that developed missiles able to carry India's nuclear warheads. 
 
He became a national hero after helping oversee nuclear tests in 1998 that solidified India's status as a nuclear weapons state. India's first atomic test was in 1974. 
 
Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=smriti+irani">Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani</a> announced Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan to be renamed as APJ Abdul Kalam Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan. 
 
Telangana Government has announced holiday, whereas the Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to work one hour extra to pay tribute to the late President. 
 
Kalam died on Monday (July 27) from a cardiac arrest at the age of 83. 
 
Kalam, popularly known as 'Missile Man', was delivering a lecture in Shillong when he collapsed and was rushed to Bethany Hospital.

President Pranab Mukherjee, PM Modi pay homage to Dr Kalam at Delhi airport

Even as aftershocks continue to be felt across <keyword id="12266" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nepal">Nepal</keyword> and its capital <keyword id="18568" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="kathmandu">Kathmandu</keyword>, reports of the first <keyword id="6379994" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="casualty">casualty</keyword> from the severe 7.9 magnitude has trickled in, of a 15 year old girl, who succumbed to her injuries on the Indian side of the Indo-Nepal border. The casualty, officials both in <keyword id="2823538" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nepal-and-India">Nepal and India</keyword> fear, could go much higher given the scale of devastation followed by the massive <keyword id="6362774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="earthquake">earthquake</keyword> and its hugely powerful aftershocks. 
 
Some extremely moving first pictures and videos amongst other details of the extent of damage have also started filtering in. Several pictures have surfaced showing huge cracks on roads in Kathmandu, several destroyed buildings, including a completely raised to the ground chapel. Reports also suggest that the Kathmandu airport has been shutdown and all flights are now being directed to India. Fear is now mounting that there could be several people stuck or buried under collapsed high-rises and other buildings in Kathmandu alone. 
 
An earthquake measuring 7.9 magnitude struck 80 km (50 miles) east of Pokhara in Nepal on Saturday, about half way between the town and the capital Kathmandu. Tremors have been felt right across the entire northern Indian belt, from Rajasthan to the states in the north east. The quake was 31 km (19 miles) deep. 
 
This is the second largest earthquake to rock the region since 1934, when an earthquake measuring over 8 on the Richter scale, nearly wiped out the entire area. Though slightly lesser in magnitude, today’s earthquake, given it is continental in nature, is expected to create widespread devastation in and around the epicentre. 
 
So strong has been its impact, that several strong after- tremors have been felt even as far as Delhi NCR since then. Several picture from Kathmandu showing damaged and destroyed buildings have already started pouring in. 
 
What is a big cause of concern however is the level of preparedness that one can expect in the national capital region, given it falls in Earthquake Zone 4, or the second most dangerous geographical zone for earthquakes in India, followed only by the entire Himalayan belt, which is the most earthquake prone area in India (Zone 5).

Domestic airlines carried 144 million flyers in 2019, according to the regulatory body <a href="https://www.dgca.gov.in/digigov-portal/?page=jsp/dgca/InventoryList/dataReports/aviationDataStatistics/handbookCivilAviation/HANDBOOK2018-19.pdf&amp;main4252/4205/sericename">Directorate General of Civil Aviation.</a> By comparison, the US (population 333 million) has over <a href="https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/by_the_numbers/">5,000 civilian aircraft</a>, while China (population 1.44 billion) operates <a href="http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2019-07/18/c_138237617.htm">close to 3,700</a> passenger jets.Today, trains remain the preferred mode for the long-distance journeys of the masses in India. In the 12 months <a href="http://indianrailways.gov.in/railwayboard/uploads/directorate/stat_econ/Annual-Reports-2019-2020/Year-Book-2019-20-English_Final_Web.pdf">ending March 2020,</a> Indian trains ferried over eight billion travelers.But as India's middle class grows and competing airlines keep the price of domestic airfare low, air travel is slowly becoming a viable mode of transport for more people. Delhi aims to unveil <a href="https://twitter.com/MoCA_GoI/status/1357015867448455169">over 200 new airports</a> across the vast country in the next four years and is rapidly expanding the existing airports. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration expects civil aviation to play a crucial role in its ambitious goal of making <a href="https://www.narendramodi.in/pm-modi-s-aspirational-call-for-5-trillion-dollar-economy-in-5-years-547486">India a $5 trillion economy </a>by 2024."We can expect huge growth in the next five to 10 years," Sanjay Kumar, chief strategy and revenue officer of IndiGo, told Insider of the Indian aviation market. IndiGo is India's market leader in domestic traffic <a href="https://www.ibef.org/industry/indian-aviation/showcase/indigo">with 55% share.</a>"The growing middle-class population will start traveling as the Americans or Chinese do. We've so far not seen this [in India] at all," Kumar added.<h2>A volatile market</h2>Until the second half of 2018, India was home to the fastest-growing aviation market in the world, with passenger numbers ballooning.Growth nosedived in 2019 due to factors including crew shortage, taxes on jet fuel, and unsustainable business models.At the heart of India's spiraling airline crisis was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jet-airways-shuts-down-after-running-out-of-money-2019-4">the collapse of Jet Airways</a>, the country's oldest and first successful private airline. Mounting debts, poor acquisitions, and cheaper prices offered by rivals killed the 26-year-old Jet Airways.The Indian aviation market is so volatile that about <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_airlines_of_India">50 players have shut shop</a> in the past three decades and changed billionaires into millionaires.And this was all before the pandemic decimated the industry.But a troubled industry also means abundant talent in the market for hire, low asset costs, and weakened competitors, factors that could play a role in Jhunjhunwala's favor.<h2>A market dominated by low-cost carriers</h2>Unlike the aviation markets of the western world, where the segment is multi-layered and caters to a wide range of travelers, carriers in India need to keep a close watch on ticket costs. About 80% of <a href="https://www.dgca.gov.in/digigov-portal/?page=jsp/dgca/InventoryList/dataReports/aviationDataStatistics/handbookCivilAviation/HANDBOOK2018-19.pdf&amp;main4252/4205/sericename">the market share</a> in India is cornered by low-cost carrier models (LCC), which make a profit through volume by selling seats at cheap rates.Six large airlines dominate the domestic skies in India: IndiGo, SpiceJet, GoAir (which rebranded as GoFirst), AirAsia India, Vistara, and Air India. While Vistara and Air India are classified as no-frills carriers, the rest operate as LCC.Unlike all other existing market players, Akasa is an ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC), which means every little space inside the plane – from paper cups or luggage bins — is for sale for advertising. Further, Akasa can cut back on all expendable costs and fly more hours a day while keeping the seat fares separate from all other related services like food. It's basically like the Spirit Airlines of India.Akasa is expected to launch operations by early or mid 2022, if the speculation in the industry is proved right. Akasa has been busy hiring industry veterans including Vinay Dube, the former CEO of Jet Airways, and Aditya Ghosh, the former CEO of Indigo. <a href="https://centreforaviation.com/data/profiles/airlines/akasa">Regulatory approvals </a>are on track.Yet, the fate of Akasa depends on more than a billionaire backer and experienced leadership. Other variables at play in the airline's success include how it manages its fleet composition, distribution models, and the choice of flying destinations.<a href="http://www.knowindia.net/aviation7.html">Airbus dominates</a> the Indian skies: The A320 family makes up 70% of all passenger aircraft in the country.The advent of Akasa means an opportunity for American planemaker Boeing to make a breakthrough in a crucial market.Akasa hopes to operate a fleet of 70 aircraft in four years, ​​Jhunjhunwala told <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-07-28/indian-billionaire-investor-plans-70-planes-for-new-airline">Bloomberg</a> in a television interview in July. To be successful, Akasa must get the combination of these correct, industry experts said."Akasa's bet is on the fragility of one or more carriers and as a well-capitalized new entrant, it may very well be able to gain a strong foothold," said Satyendra Pandey, managing partner at India-based aviation services firm AT-TV.Rival carriers are bound to match Akasa's fares from day one of its operations, Pandey said – which means it'll be entering a profitless growth environment. A careful assessment of the market should incorporate both business and behavioral trends, Pandey said."Force-fitting western frameworks just does not work. Getting this wrong has meant that even extremely well-funded airlines have consistently failed to turn a profit and witnessed continuous margin deterioration. Levers that worked pre-pandemic may not quite work the same," Pandey added."If the ULCC model is implemented, Akasa Air may expand the overall market by stimulation due to low airfares," said Manvi Hooda, chief of consulting and research at the aviation consulting firm, CAPA India."India remains an under-penetrated air travel market. Given India is a value-sensitive market, low airfares can significantly stimulate the market," said Hooda.

New Delhi, Feb 25 () Billionaire Gautam Adani's energy and infrastructure conglomerate is considering bidding to buy Air India and is pouring into bid documents before finalising a plan, sources said. The government is offering to sell its entire holding in the loss-making carrier along with its entire interest in its low-cost arm and 50 per cent in the ground handling unit. Sources with knowledge of the development said the mergers and acquisition (M&amp;A) team of Adani Group is scrutinising Air India bid documents and the interest was at a preliminary stage. Bidding, they insisted, would depend on the due diligence. If Adani bids, it will join likes of Tata Group, Hindujas, IndiGo and New York-based fund Interups who are said to be considering putting in an expression of interest (EoI) at the close of the bid deadline next month. Adani Group's spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comments. Sources said Adani sees synergy in Air India and its airport operations. It last year won bids to operate six airports at Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram, and Mangalore. The deciding factor for Adani to bid for Air India would be the debt and losses. The buyer will have to take on a fixed debt of Rs 23,286.5 crore along with certain identified current and non-current liabilities. The airline has been in losses during the last few years. While the privatization bid document does not place any restriction on Adani from bidding for Air India, Airports Authority of India (AAI) restricts an airline or a group owning an airline to hold no more than 27 per cent in the airports. A similar clause restricting airlines or group owning airlines from owning more than 10 per cent in Delhi airport recently resulted in the collapse of the Tata-GIC group's investment in GMR. Air India and its subsidiary, Air India Express own about 120 aircraft at FY18-end and 126 aircraft till September last year. After its unsuccessful bid to sell Air India in 2018, the government this time has decided to offload its entire stake. In 2018, the government had offered to sell its 76 per cent stake in the airline. Of the total debt of Rs 60,074 crore as of March 31, 2019, the buyer would be required to absorb Rs 23,286.5 crore, while the rest would be transferred to Air India Assets Holding Ltd (AIAHL), the special purpose vehicle. As a precursor to Air India sale, the Cabinet in February 2019 approved setting up AIAHL to transfer Rs 29,464 crore worth loans of the national carrier and its four subsidiaries-- Air India Air Transport Services (AIATSL), Airline Allied Services (AASL), Air India Engineering Services Ltd (AIESL) and Hotel Corporation of India (HCI). The&#xa0;$35-million, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/05/world/middleeast/at-the-border-between-gaza-and-israel-a-crossing-in-need-of-travelers.html">375,000-square-foot border terminal</a> at Erez looks like an international airport, with a soaring wave-like dome reaching over an inviting glass facade.&#xa0;When it opened in 2005, Israel was about to withdraw its soldiers and civilian settlers from Gaza, formerly Egyptian-occupied land which it had held since the Six-Day War in 1967. Each day more than 15,000 Palestinians were expected to cross here.
But since the takeover by Hamas,&#xa0;a US and EU-listed terror organization, Israel has imposed tight border restrictions in order to keep weapons and other financial and material resources out of the militants' hands. Traffic has precipitously declined:&#xa0;Erez now sees only a few hundred users a day, mostly aid workers and journalists along with Palestinians with rare permission to enter Israel for passage to the West Bank or Jordan or to visit relatives in Israeli hospitals.
The Erez terminal is&#xa0;flanked by a military base, and there there's a high wall that runs along the border, ahead of a second layer of wall that protects the nearby town of Netiv HaAsara from rocket and mortar attacks.
When I crossed at 8:30 AM on a Monday morning in mid-November, the only other travelers in the broad and empty departure hall were a trio of Swedish aid workers. There was only one desk open out of 15, and no one lined up behind me.&#xa0;
Making the passage was an anxious and unforgettable process. Signs in the terminal point the way "to Gaza" in English, Hebrew, and Arabic, with no hint of what awaits on the other side.

The terminal is about 100 feet from the high concrete barrier marking the border. Behind the terminal is a covered area linking the facility to the border wall; a traveler walks through a broad corridor with fencing on either side before entering a second fenced-off area enclosing what appears to be a thick rectangular metal slab cut into the stark carapace.
This area has a fence-type door that remotely locks behind the traveler; for a moment, I found myself alone and seemingly trapped. I tried to pry at the metal door grafted into the border wall, assuming there was some basic cue I was missing. It turned out my movements were being carefully tracked by camera: as I turned around and tried to signal for help, the metal rectangle grafted into the larger concrete wall was slowly and somewhat ominously sliding open on its own, revealing a covered cement walkway cutting through swampy agricultural tracts.&#xa0;

Immediately before me was a covered passageway several hundred-meters in length, with gridded aluminum fencing on either side and a metal canopy overhead. I wanted to walk the entire thing, just to survey the weirdly quiet border area and get used to the idea of even being in Gaza at all.
But a few moments later, a man with a golf cart pulled up and told me to get in. He sped along the otherwise-empty passageway, and before I could tip him he darted into a covered waiting area to collect what few passengers he could wrangle for the return trip.

At the first Palestinian checkpoint there was an outdoor waiting room and a shipping container-turned-office with a small group of non-uniformed individuals inside. They were engaged in a bureaucratic performance unconvincing even to a newcomer - miming the examination of travel documents, issuing the occasional glazed-eye look at travelers collected into gridlocked lines and rows. A banner urging travelers to Keep Palestine Free of Ebola hanged nearby.
It turned out the&#xa0;real&#xa0;border post was a few hundred yards and a 10 shekel cab ride up the road. The cabs might have license plates with a Palestinian flag on them - the Gaza Strip the only place in the world where vehicles have these. But one still pays for this cab, and just about everything else in Gaza, in Israeli currency.
The second checkpoint was staffed with vehement-looking young men, some of whom wore faded blue uniforms curiously stripped of any government or national insignia.
These men were from Hamas, and unlike at the earlier checkpoint these officials wanted to look over the contents of my backpack and examine my Palestinian Authority-issued press credential before allowing me to proceed.

This officious attitude is typical of how Hamas runs the Strip. While Gaza's Islamist overlords don't provide much in the way of public services and their governance is all but notional, they seize any and all opportunities to appear like an actual state.
"They believe this is strength," one Gaza-based analyst told me, "but it is weakness."
Hamas's situation became even more tenuous this summer after they instigated and lost a battle against Israel, resulting in the death of hundreds of its fighters and the destruction of its attack tunnel network - along with thousands of structures inside of Gaza. Now the Palestinian Authority, which holds little actual power in Gaza but holds far more credibility globally, has even more excuse to curtail the Islamists' power. Although the PA and Gaza are technically in a unity government, the PA has cut off salaries to Hamas civil servants in Gaza and few expect the arrangement to last. 
Hence power-tripping inconveniences at the border, like the annoying insistence that taxis park far down the street from the checkpoint, as well as weightier policies, like a border guard's brief inquiries about whether I was carrying alcohol into the Strip.
My Palestinian Authority media credential was issued under PA letterhead by an office peopled with Hamas officials; I was told the $50 I paid for it, along with the hefty sales tax levied at my waterfront hotel, almost certainly went into the group's coffers.
Visible from this second checkpoint is a line of black-scarred highrise apartments that lie just a few hundred yards inside the border. The Hamas checkpoint itself enclosed a mound of bomb-shattered cinder block, ruins of a building leveled during the war. It's only the first, comparatively mild evidence of destruction from the conflict that Hamas kicked into motion this past summer.&#xa0;The road to Gaza City is scattered with damaged and collapsed buildings, with neighboring structures often left remarkably unscathed.

Billboards heralding the grisly accomplishments of local militant groups make it impossible to forget the violence to which the Strip and its future are now captive. Same with the Hamas traffic cops in downtown&#xa0;Gaza&#xa0;City and the Hamas policemen manning checkpoints between towns. On the morning of my second day in the Strip, I saw unarmed men in blue khaki uniforms drilling in formation in a vacant lot across the street from my hotel near the&#xa0;Gaza&#xa0;port, members, apparently, of Hamas's "civilian" auxiliary.

Re-entering Israel through Erez is somehow an even stranger experience than leaving.
 The slab rolls open remotely. Just inside the wall is a metal table in front of a pair of electronically-locked turnstiles; the light only turns green when travelers open their bags or suitcases for a remote camera. Next is the 100-foot corridor to the border terminal, followed by a second electronic lock, followed by another corridor with a third electronic lock, followed by a conveyor belt where travelers must leave their luggage - signs note that every item in their position is liable to an individual search behind closed-doors. At various points, hidden loudspeakers issue brief instruction in Hebrew.
The first human a traveler encounters on the Israeli is just after the conveyor belt and the aforementioned series of locks, cameras, and corridors; the day I crossed, this individual was actually an Arabic-speaker. There are a number of turnstiles along the way - inconvenient for one of the people with whom I was crossing, a mother attempting to angle her child's stroller through a gauntlet of cramped metallic cylinders.&#xa0;
The inconvenience serves a purpose: the border is an attractive target for militant groups. Erez was the site <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/05/world/middleeast/at-the-border-between-gaza-and-israel-a-crossing-in-need-of-travelers.html">several attacks</a> during the war over the summer, as well as a 2004 <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/01/14/israel.blast/">suicide bombing</a> in which four Israeli soldiers were killed and several Palestinians were injured. And these days, the border receives so little foot traffic that the labyrinth of locks and passage ways and conveyor belts can take dizzyingly little time if one's papers are in order. Crossing back into Israel took only about 30 minutes for me.
After I'd collected my baggage, the last obstacle was passport control. After a now-perfunctory question about my African travel and a stamp of my passport, I was back in Israel, some 300 meters and an entire universe away from where I'd stood just minutes before.
