 The 23 projects that the <keyword id="43909" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence-ministry">defence ministry</keyword> is taking up under the ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ initiative has 13 for Army, six for Navy and four in <keyword id="15141" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword>’s fold.<o:p></o:p>

	This is for the first time such a transparent modus operandi has been followed by the ministry of defence.<o:p></o:p>

	The 23 projects will allow participation of all categories of companies including MSMEs – participation of a sector that the government wants to encourage under Make in India. A host of projects, however, are for the big and medium players, sources in the ministry said.<o:p></o:p>

	While the order for these 23 projects may not be very big and is estimated to be in the range of around Rs 2500-3000 crore in totality, the same is being viewed as an important step by the Indian government and is also the first of the lot after the announcement of the new Defence Procurement Policy (DPP) 2016.<o:p></o:p>

	Moreover, some of these projects were earlier not open for private participation and were either manufactured by defence PSUs, ordinance factories or the demand was alternatively being met from imports.<o:p></o:p>

	“Under the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the government, a list of potential ‘Make’ projects has been identified by the Service Head Quarters (SHQs) in consultation with the other stakeholders in the ministry. These projects are being contemplated to be undertaken as per category Make-I or Make-II of new revised Chapter-III on Make Procedure of Defence Procurement Procedure-2016,” a brief from the defence ministry stated.<o:p></o:p>

The video accompanying the update shows artillery crews standing underneath the Ukrainian flag as they practice firing the weapon on a field. The AS90 is a self-propelled 155 mm artillery gun that was first produced in the late 1980s and is still in service with the British Army today.The gun has a 155 mm 39 caliber barrel that is capable of firing up to six rounds per minute with an effective range of around 30 kilometers (18.6 miles).It is operated by a crew of six people including the driver and can fire a variety of different types of shells, including high explosive, smoke, and illuminating rounds, Forces News reported. The weapon is on the back of a car that is highly mobile and can keep up with armored units on the battlefield.In May, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Britain's support for his country will "never waver.""From providing Challenger tanks to long-range missiles and pilot training, the UK's support for Ukraine's defence will never waver," Sunak said, <a href="https://www.itv.com/news/2023-05-21/uk-support-for-ukraine-will-never-waver-sunak-tells-zelenskyy">according to ITV News. </a>More than 1,000 UK service personnel have been involved in running the program as part of the British government's support for Ukraine in the war, Forces News reported. Ukrainian troops finish training on 'formidable' AS90 self-propelled artillery that can wipe out Russian targets from 18 miles away, UK says

<ul><li>New deal saved 2.86% for the Indian exchequer, says India's federal auditor.</li><li>Latest report tabled in the Parliament will help Modi in fighting corruption charges from the opposition.</li><li>Opposition had hoped to corner the Modi government over the controversial defence deal.</li></ul> The Narendra Modi government struck a better deal than the Congress, that's the verdict from the <keyword id="6379775" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Comptroller-and-Auditor-General-of-India">Comptroller and Auditor General of India</keyword> (CAG), the country's federal auditor, which tabled its report on the controversial 2015 deal to buy 36 Rafale jets from French company Dassault, according to news reports. "Compared to the 126 aircraft deal, India managed to save 17.08% money for the India-specific enhancements in the 36 Rafale contract," news agency ANI said, adding that,"the delivery schedule of the first 18 Rafale aircraft is better than the one proposed in the 126 aircraft deal, by five months." However, the full price of the jets have been redacted in the report based on the insistence of the Defence Ministry citing the Indo-French agreement of 2008 and the provisions of inter-government agreement, another news agency IANS reported. In April 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that India will buy 36 French-manufactured Rafale fighter jets off-the-shelf. This was a departure from the original plan, under the previous regime, under which India would buy 18 off-the-shelf jets and another 108 would be assembled by the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited or HAL in Bengaluru. Modi , however, intervened and decided to buy 36 "ready-to-fly" fighters instead of trying to acquire technology from Dassault and make it in India. "A Defence Ministry team in March 2015 recommended the scrapping of the 126 Rafale deal saying that Dassault Aviation was not the lowest bidder and EADS (European Aeronautic Defence &amp; Space Company) was not fully compliant with the tender requirements," the CAG report said according to ANI. The opposition parties had cornered the incumbent Modi government alleging that the ₹590 billion deal was more expensive and it included kickbacks. It was also said that the deal was made to help Anil Ambani, whose Reliance Naval and Engineering was reportedly brought in to support Dassault. Both entities have denied this. Modi also faced a direct <a href="https://twitter.com/INCIndia/status/1093733762104524800/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1093733762104524800&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hindustantimes.com%2Findia-news%2Fdefence-ministry-note-proves-pm-bypassed-negotiations-with-france-on-rafale-deal-rahul%2Fstory-EUd4UAbFWTQ9lX6XODsLkM.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">charge</a> after news reports revealed that the Prime Minister's Office had intervened in the deal negotiations and in fact, dismissed the apprehensions of its own Defence Ministry. The latest report from CAG will be a big blessing for Prime Minister Narendra Modi who will be seeking re-election in the upcoming summer. However, the opposition was already prepared. Prior to the release of the report, the Congress party had pre-emptively dismissed the findings of the report, explaining that Rajiv Mehrishi, the current Comptroller and Auditor General of India, took part in the deal’s negotiations.

CAG report on Rafale deal is a blessing for Modi government

While we Indians are happy thinking that we belong to a country that is an emerging superpower, the truth is that this ‘so-called’ emerging superpower is not going to have a single operational aircraft carrier for the coming eight months. 
 
The only aircraft carrier that India has, called <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/This-Is-Why-The-NewAircraft-Carrier-INS-Vikramaditya-Is-Important-For-The-Indian-Navy/articleshow/25805872.cms">INS Vikramaditya</a>, is undergoing maintenance refit, and would be fit for use only after eight months, and till then, we are pretty much without one. 
 The problem doesn’t end here. The 44,570-tonne <keyword id="317546" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="INS-Vikramaditya">INS Vikramaditya</keyword> is probably going to be the only aircraft carrier in India for the next six-seven years. 
 The central audit body, the CAG of India, presented a report in Parliament yesterday, which said that the second aircraft carrier of India, the 40,000-tonne homemade <keyword id="312412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="INS-Vikrant">INS Vikrant</keyword>, which is already been delayed for long now, will be ready only by 2023.

Talking of the use of aircraft carriers, they are used to display raw combat power when they are in the high seas, with fighter jets and missiles ready to be launched in case of adversaries. It’s because of this use that the Indian Navy has been asking for three aircraft carriers, one each for the western and eastern sea-boards, and one extra in case of these timely refits. 
 
However, the CAG report, which <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/CAG-slams-DPSUs-for-project-delays/articleshow/53410883.cms">slammed the defence PSUs</a> for being sluggish with the projects given to them, says that we can’t expect even a two-carrier force till 2023.

However, the Navy is confident that INS Vikrant, first approved in May 1999 and beginning its construction in November 2006 will be ready by December 2018. 
 
"INS Vikrant will not have its Russian aviation complex (aviation armaments, mobile systems, arresting gear, hydraulic stations and other equipment) and the Barak-8 long-range surface-to-air missile systems by then. But we are planning sea trials from 2018 onwards," a senior officer told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/India-to-stay-without-aircraft-carrier-for-8-months/articleshow/53409482.cms">ET</a>.

Britain's equivalent of the Navy SEALs stormed an oil tanker, ending a suspected hijacking off the UK coast

<a href="http://www.themoscowtimes.com/article/514038.html" target="_blank"></a>Russia is preparing to test military robots in the Astrakhan region, an <a href="http://russiatrek.org/astrakhan-city" target="_blank">industrial outpost on the coast of the Caspian sea</a>, about 1,500 kilometres (1,000 miles) south of Moscow.
The Moscow Times quotes Major Dmitry Andre yev, a&#xa0;representative for&#xa0;the Defence Ministry's Strategic Missile Forces, who said in a statement to the Interfax news agency that the preparation for the testing is in the final stage.
The&#xa0;testing is part of&#xa0;a defence ministry's initiative <a href="http://www.themoscowtimes.com/article/514038.html" target="_blank">to&#xa0;deploy robots in protection of the intercontinental ballistic missile launch sites before 2020</a>, according to The Moscow Times.

Intruder in car tried to 'force his way in' to US Air Force base in Suffolk, reports claim

Known for its heavy duty trucks, buses and passenger vehicles, Tata Motors is foraying into the arena of defence where it has smelt the opportunity of earning whopping revenues. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Shares-of-Tata-Motors-are-surging-Know-why/articleshow/48187327.cms">At a time when its shares are surging</a>, it is transitioning from just providing logistic support to supplying combat vehicles including front line combat vehicles, as per a news report by The Economic Times. Simultaneously, the company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Tata-Motorsto-triple-its-commercial-vehicles-export/articleshow/48176534.cms">is planning to open up new overseas markets through the hub-and-spoke model</a> in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asean and Latin America. 
 
The company is building tie ups with the brands well recognized in the defence segment, including SUPACAT, a UK-based high mobility vehicle specialist. This will supposedly provide technical assistance for its Light Armoured Multi-role Vehicle (LAMV) project, a combat vehicle based on a defence ministry programme. The company also has collaborated with Malaysian-based DRB-HICOM for import, distribution and assembly of Tata Motors' commercial vehicles and defence range in Malaysia, a step towards expanding into the international market, confirms the ET report. 
 
Besides, the LAMV and its upgrade programmes include missiles carriers, mine protected vehicles, main battle tanks and infantry combat vehicles, Tata has also developed the WHAP (Wheeled Armoured Amphibious Platform). 
Defence business is expected to account for 15 % of its total revenues, a 5 times jump from 3 % at present, and exports volumes to increase to 150,000 units from about 50,000 in 2014-15. 
 
"The potential is very large...10 % is not a good number, our defence business can be much bigger than 15 per cent in the future," Ravindra Pisharody, executive director and head of commercial vehicle business at Tata Motors told the ET. Pisharody was referring to Rs 900 crore order that Tata Motors secured from the Indian Army for supplying 1,200 trucks for material handling cranes for loading, unloading and transportation of ammunition pallets, spares and other operational equipment. 
 
Not only India, the Indian multinational automaker has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Tata-Motors-has-entered-Vietnam-market/articleshow/47298143.cms">supplied defence vehicles in markets including the ASEAN, SAARC and Africa</a>. The company recently received an order from Myanmar for about 500 units and it completed deliveries for 520 defence vehicles to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali.

The UK government plans to deploy 3,500 British soldiers to handle no deal Brexit chaos

"They remain silent, there is no contact with them. They are to hand it over on [November] 14, but they remain silent."
Delivery of the ship, the Vladivostok, has been thrown into doubt due to Western sanctions over Russia's part in the ongoing Ukraine crisis. Although French President François Hollande has remained resolute in his determination to meet his country's commitment to deliver the ships, it seems highly unlikely that France would choose to deliver them while Russia was reportedly moving troops across the border.

India will be picking up AI-enabled military tech from South Korea at the DefExpo 2020

Moscow, Apr 12 () All the major military contracts, including the deliveries of S-400 air defence missile systems, between Russia and India will be on schedule and the coronavirus pandemic will have no effect on their timeframe, according to India's top diplomat here."I don't think there will be any impact. There has been slight dislocation of a couple of weeks but all the major contracts will be on schedule, we don't anticipate any problem on that," Indian Ambassador to Russia Bala Venkatesh Varma was quoted as saying by the TASS news agency on Saturday.In October 2018, India had signed a USD 5 billion deal with Russia to buy five units of the S-400 air defence missile systems, notwithstanding warning from the Trump administration that going ahead with the contract may invite US sanctions.Last year, India made the first tranche of payment of around USD 800 million to Russia for the missile systems.In February, Deputy Director of the Russia's Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC), Vladimir Drozhzhov, said that Moscow will begin the delivery of the S-400 surface-to-air missile systems to India by the end of 2021 and there will be no delay in execution of the project."We will fulfil our delivery commitments," Drozhzhov had said, adding that the defence cooperation between the two countries is very robust.The 'Triumf' interceptor-based missile system can destroy incoming hostile aircraft, missiles and even drones at ranges of up to 400 km.The S-400 is known as Russia's most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defence system.Russia plans to complete the delivery of the fifth regimental set in the first half of 2025.The US had imposed sanctions on Russia under the stringent Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
