Britain is not part of the Schengen area. The declaration is set to spark some reactions in Berlin, where <a href="http://www.handelsblatt.com/politik/international/migration-in-europa-griechischer-minister-droht-europa-mit-fluechtlingen/11476072.html" target="_blank">it has already been reported by the leading German financial publication Handesblatt</a>. Greece's defence minister is threatening to 'flood Europe with migrants'

Over the last few months, the Iraqi army, aided by support from the US-led coalition, has carried out a series of successful offensives against ISIS targets.But while news of an ISIS retreat is most welcome it has been reported on Thursday by <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-mideast-crisis-iraq-fighting-idUKKCN0US0VK20160114" target="_blank">Reuters</a> that the extremist group, has captured a northern village after pushing through the Iraqi army front line."Daesh exploited a weak spot in the Himrin (mountain) area that is not under control of the (Iraqi) forces and attacked Kusaiba village with 10 vehicles, including Humvees," Laith Hameed, a senior official in Alam, told Reuters.The village of Tal Kusaiba is 20 miles east of Tikrit, a town the Iraqi pro-government forces re-took from ISIS last April. France's defence minister claims ISIS is on the retreat in Iraq

<keyword id="32723" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence">Defence</keyword> Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday projected that the annual Indian defence exports will touch Rs 35,000 crore by 2024 from the current level of Rs 17,000 crore. Singh also said he has no doubt about India emerging as among the three major economies of the world by 2030 andthe defence industries will have an important role to play. "India's defence export is growing. In the last two years our export has been Rs 17,000 crore but keeping in view your (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) capacity in the successive years, I can say that by 2024 Rs 35,000 crore. I am confident about it," the Defence minister said at the Karnataka 'Rajyotsava' event organised at the HAL here. The minister told the gathering that India cannotremain dependent on imports for long and the Indian companies,especially defence public sector units, will have to play amajor pro-active role in achieving the goal of 'Make In India'as envisaged by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>. "We don't want to see India as an importing nation. Instead, based on your strength, I can say that India is sure to become an exporting nation. Nobody can stop her," Singh said. In this regard, he hailed the HAL for being among those Defence public sector units, whose performance in operations and finances was excellent. "By March 2019, the company's turnover was Rs 19,705 crore and the HAL gave shareholders 198 per cent healthy dividend," he said. Lucknow, Feb 6 () Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said India and the US were moving towards a collaborative approach in the defence sector from the traditional 'buyer-seller' arrangement and asserted that this relationship could become the "biggest collaboration of this century".Speaking at an event at the DefExpo-2020, Singh also referred to several key agreements signed during the "2+2 Dialogue" he had held with US Defence Secretary Mark Esper in December.During the Dialogue, India and the US signed an industrial security agreement that will allow the transfer of defence technology."The Indo-US relationship will move towards collaboration approach from the traditional 'buyer-seller'. I am confident this relationship will be more dynamic and vibrant in the future," the defence minister said."The US is one of the largest defence exporters for India and the world. At the same time, the defence manufacturing sector in India is growing at a rapid pace. In such a situation, our collaboration can prove to be the biggest collaboration of this century," Singh said.Assuring investors that the government is reforming the defence sector and would continue to do so, he urged them to take the maximum advantage of the reforms and invest in India.He appreciated the US-India Business Council for its role in improving the bilateral trade ties.Vising the UP pavilion at the DefExpo, he said the investment opportunities would increase in the state with the establishment of a defence corridor.The five-day expo was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.It is being attended by 38 defence ministers and top executives of 172 foreign defence majors and 856 Indian companies. US, India moving towards collaboration in defence: Rajnath

Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles will travel to Ahmedabad to witness the summit clash between <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> and <keyword id="6355478" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="australia" source="Orion">Australia</keyword> at the <keyword id="3859" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cricket-world-cup" source="Orion">cricket World Cup</keyword> on Sunday. Marles, who is also Australia's <keyword id="32723" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="defence" source="Orion">defence</keyword> minister, and Foreign Minister Penny Wong are visiting India to co-chair the second edition of the "2+2" ministerial dialogue along with their Indian counterparts on Monday. The defence ministry on Saturday announced the Australian deputy prime minister's two-day visit to India from November 19-20 primarily for the "2+2" dialogue that is expected to focus on boosting the overall defence and strategic ties between the two countries. It said Marles will also attend the cricket World Cup final between India and Australia on Sunday. "Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles will visit India from November 19 to 20 to co-chair the second India-Australia 2+2 ministerial dialogue with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh," the ministry said in a statement. The Indian delegation at the "2+2" dialogue will be led by Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. "During his visit, Minister Marles will also attend the Cricket World Cup final between India and Australia in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on November 19," the ministry said. It said Singh and Marles will hold a bilateral meeting on November 20 that would be followed by the "2+2" dialogue. "India and Australia are pursuing a comprehensive strategic partnership and the visit of Minister Marles is expected to give further impetus to the collaboration as well as bilateral defence cooperation," the defence ministry said. "The two countries are expected to discuss wide-ranging issues of mutual interest during the 2+2 dialogue and the bilateral defence ministers' meeting," it added. The two sides are expected to focus extensively on further ramping up the overall defence and security ties and boost the strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region during the "2+2"dialogue. Both Australia and India are part of the Quad or Quadrilateral coalition that is focused on working towards ensuring a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific. The other two members of the Quad are the United States and Japan. The situation in West Asia in view of the Hamas-Israel conflict, China's increasing military muscle flexing in the Indo-Pacific and issues relating to regional security is expected to figure in the talks, people familiar with the preparation for the dialogue said. The inaugural "2+2" ministerial dialogue between India and Australia took place in September 2021. India has such a framework for talks with a very few countries, including the US and Japan. The latest edition of the India-US foreign and defence ministerial dialogue took place in New Delhi on November 10. The bilateral defence and strategic ties between India and Australia are on an upward trajectory in the last few years. In June 2020, the two countries elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership and signed a landmark deal for reciprocal access to military bases for logistics support. The <keyword id="10796857" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mutual-logistics-support-agreement" source="Orion">Mutual Logistics Support Agreement</keyword> (<keyword id="449908" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mlsa" source="Orion">MLSA</keyword>) allows the militaries of the two countries to use each other's bases for repair and replenishment of supplies, besides facilitating scaling up of the overall defence cooperation. Australian Deputy PM Marles to watch India-Australia World Cup cricket final in Ahmedabad

India’s <keyword id="6366153" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defence-Minister">defence minister</keyword> <keyword id="6363133" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manohar-Parrikar">Manohar Parrikar</keyword> is going to hold a high-powered Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) this Saturday, in which he would discuss projects that he is considering, said to be worth over Rs 1 lakh crore. These projects include critical purchases like armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), an advanced air defence system, carbines for the Army and a range of vessels for the Navy. 
 
 As per <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/rs-1-lakh-crore-defence-purchases-on-manohar-parrikars-mind/articleshow/52875093.cms">ET</a> sources, the Saturday meeting would decide the fate of several of these projects, some of which have been pending for years now, because of differences within the ministry. 
 The proposal to acquire a new fleet of armed drone for the <keyword id="15141" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword>, which will help IAF increase its opportunity for disciplinary cross-border action in response to terror, is on the topmost priority. Last year, there were talks of a $400 million proposal for acquiring armed Heron TP drones from Israel, but nothing has been officiated as of yet. Now, India might also buy US-made Predator armed drones since it has got entry into the Missile Technology Control Regime. 
 
Another plan for IAF acquisition involves $6.1-billion purchase of S 400 air defence system from Russia, which could be a game-changer for the region, since S 400 has a range of over 300 km, along with an ability to target aircrafts that are flying deep in enemy territory. China is also procuring the same aircrafts. 
 
Other than this, IAF is also expected to appeal to acquire the Indo-Israeli long-range surface-to-air missile, along with the long-pending proposal to equip two Boeing 777 VVIP aircrafts, which are being transferred from Air India with missile avoidance systems. 
 Talking of <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword>, there are chances that the $700-million plan to purchase 145 M777 ultra-light howitzers, which is to be done as per a foreign military sales deal with the US, pending since January 2016, could have some light thrown on it. 
 
There is one more Army plan, to replace its long-retired short-range 44,600 carbines, which is pending since 2010. Along with that, long-running 'short-range surface-to-air missile' project of the Army could also be taken a decision on, which aims to buy an agile missile shield for forward moving forces. 
 
Navy, on the other hand, has a range of vessels that are soon going to expire, so replacing them could be discussed in the meeting. These include six new-generation missile vessels and a new range of fleet support vessels.

Defence minister is considering purchases worth Rs 1 lakh crore

Paris, May 11 (AP) French defence minister Florence Parly has acknowledged "mistakes" that led about two-thirds of troops aboard an aircraft carrier to be infected with the coronavirus.Parly told French lawmakers on Monday that one sailor from the Charles de Gaulle remains hospitalized. Others have recovered.The number of positive cases reached a total 1,046 out of 1,760 sailors onboard the aircraft carrier.The investigation shows that the virus first infected people after February 26, while the carrier was at sea, Parly said.The virus was then introduced again onboard during a stop in the French port of Brest in mid-March, as the country was about to enter into lockdown.Parly said the commandment established precautionary measures, like increasing physical distance between sailors, but they were lifted at the end of March because of concerns of the low morale of the troops. She said the virus was not detected onboard before April 5. (AP) SCYSCY

French defence minister acknowledges 'mistakes' in handling of coronavirus outbreak on carrier

<ul><li><keyword id="7706628" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence-Minister-Rajnath-Singh" source="Orion">Defence Minister Rajnath Singh</keyword> on Saturday said the government is working and committed to increasing the <keyword id="15812191" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-production-target" source="Orion">defence production target</keyword> from the current $12 billion to $22 billion by 2025.</li><li>The government is also working to provide market access to the domestic industry to make them Aatmanirbhar.</li><li>Defence Minister said, India has moved from the group of 'fragile 5' economies to 'fabulous 5 world economies' in the last nine years and registered itself as one of the fastest growing economies.</li></ul>Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said the government is working and committed to increasing the defence production target from current $12 billion to $22 billion by 2025. "You (industry) can imagine, with this kind of growth, how many opportunities will be available for the Indian industry," the Defence Minister said while addressing <keyword id="15812194" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FICCIs-95th-Annual-Convention" source="Orion">FICCI's 95th Annual Convention</keyword> &amp; AGM here. He further underlined that to increase the participation of domestic industry, the government has reserved a certain portion of defence capital acquisition for domestic procurement. "Out of the total defence capital budget outlay, 68 per cent of it is reserved for indigenous procurement by domestic industry and 25 per cent for the private sector. The results of these have now started appearing and more measures will be announced soon," he emphasised. The government, he said, is also working to provide market access to the domestic industry to make them Aatmanirbhar. Singh said that in the last few years, there has been a continuous increase in defence exports. The government has already taken a series of steps including simplifying the FDI norms which have been increased to 74 per cent via automatic route and 100 per cent via government route, he added. The Defence Minister also urged the domestic industry and foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers to invest in Indian defence sector by focusing on R&amp;D, bringing in newer technologies and capital. He added that India is making defence products not just for the domestic market but also to meet the global requirements. "The world is waiting for the products made in India," he claimed. India has moved from the group of 'fragile 5' economies to 'fabulous 5 world economies' in the last nine years and registered itself as one of the fastest growing economies, the Defence Minister said on the occasion. Sanjiv Mehta, President, FICCI, thanked the government for ushering in reforms in the process of defence acquisition and facilitating ease of doing business through the revision of the DPP 2016 as DAP 2020 and assured Industry's unstinted support for achieving the goal of 'Aatmanirbhar Raksha Utpadhan'. Subhrakant Panda, President-Elect, FICCI said that the government's focus on 'Make In India' and 'Make for the World' is an impressive strategic move towards shedding its historical status of one the largest importer of defence equipment to a net exporter.
