<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Greece's defence minister Panos Kammenos has threatened to "flood Europe with migrants", potentially including Syrian jihadists, if Europe fails to find a solution to the Greek debt crisis. </p><p>The provocative declaration comes just hours <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/time-is-running-short-for-greece-as-another-bailout-summit-looms-2015-3" target="_blank">before a crucial meeting between the finance ministers of the Eurogroup</a>, who are set to decide whether the reforms proposed by the Greek government are good enough to grant an extension on the country's bailout programme.</p><p>Kammenos, who is a member of the Greek government's junior coalition party Independent Greeks, has raised the stakes ahead of Monday afternoon's meeting.</p><p>As <a href="http://www.repubblica.it/esteri/2015/03/09/news/la_minaccia_di_kammenos_alla_germania_se_ue_ci_abbandona_vi_sommergeremo_di_migranti_mescolati_a_jihadisti_-109102086/?ref=twhr&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter" target="_blank">reported by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica</a>, he said that: "If Europe leaves us in the crisis, we will flood it with migrants, and even worse for Berlin if in that wave of millions of economic migrants there will be some jihadis of the Islamic State too."<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><br /></span></p><p>He went on explaining that: "If they [the Eurogroup] strike us, we will strike them. We will give to migrants from everywhere the documents they need to travel in the Schengen area, so that the human wave could go straight to Berlin." </p><p>The Schengen area is the area comprising 26 European countries that have abolished passport and other controls at their common borders, allowing travellers to move from one country to another as if they were in a single state. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.bfmtv.com/politique/le-drian-la-france-a-frappe-daesh-7-fois-depuis-lundi-943359.html">BFMTV</a></span></p><p class="caption">Still from Jean-Yves Le Drian's interview on BFMTV.</p></div><p></p></div></div>On Thursday morning France's defence minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, announced that ISIS militants were retreating in Iraq.</p><p>Talking about France's strikes against ISIS (also known as the Islamic State, ISIL or Daesh) <a href="http://www.bfmtv.com/politique/le-drian-la-france-a-frappe-daesh-7-fois-depuis-lundi-943359.html" target="_blank">on BFMTV</a>, Le Drian said: "What we can say today is that Daesh is retreating in Iraq." <br /><br />He also claimed recent French air attacks had hit a "communication and propaganda centre" close to Mosul and that seven strikes had been conducted since Monday.<br /><br />Over the last few months, the Iraqi army, aided by support from the US-led coalition, has carried out a series of successful offensives against ISIS targets.</p><p>But while news of an ISIS retreat is most welcome it has been reported on Thursday by <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-mideast-crisis-iraq-fighting-idUKKCN0US0VK20160114" target="_blank">Reuters</a> that the extremist group, has captured a northern village after pushing through the Iraqi army front line.</p><p>"Daesh exploited a weak spot in the Himrin (mountain) area that is not under control of the (Iraqi) forces and attacked Kusaiba village with 10 vehicles, including Humvees," Laith Hameed, a senior official in Alam, told Reuters.</p><p>The village of Tal Kusaiba is 20 miles east of Tikrit, a town the Iraqi pro-government forces re-took from ISIS last April. France's defence minister claims ISIS is on the retreat in Iraq

<br /> India’s <keyword id="6366153" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defence-Minister">defence minister</keyword> <keyword id="6363133" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manohar-Parrikar">Manohar Parrikar</keyword> is going to hold a high-powered Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) this Saturday, in which he would discuss projects that he is considering, said to be worth over Rs 1 lakh crore. These projects include critical purchases like armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), an advanced air defence system, carbines for the Army and a range of vessels for the Navy.<br />

 As per <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/rs-1-lakh-crore-defence-purchases-on-manohar-parrikars-mind/articleshow/52875093.cms">ET</a> sources, the Saturday meeting would decide the fate of several of these projects, some of which have been pending for years now, because of differences within the ministry.<br />
 <br /> The proposal to acquire a new fleet of armed drone for the <keyword id="15141" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword>, which will help IAF increase its opportunity for disciplinary cross-border action in response to terror, is on the topmost priority. Last year, there were talks of a $400 million proposal for acquiring armed Heron TP drones from Israel, but nothing has been officiated as of yet. Now, India might also buy US-made Predator armed drones since it has got entry into the Missile Technology Control Regime.<br />

Another plan for IAF acquisition involves $6.1-billion purchase of S 400 air defence system from Russia, which could be a game-changer for the region, since S 400 has a range of over 300 km, along with an ability to target aircrafts that are flying deep in enemy territory. China is also procuring the same aircrafts.<br />

Other than this, IAF is also expected to appeal to acquire the Indo-Israeli long-range surface-to-air missile, along with the long-pending proposal to equip two Boeing 777 VVIP aircrafts, which are being transferred from Air India with missile avoidance systems.<br />
 <br /> Talking of <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword>, there are chances that the $700-million plan to purchase 145 M777 ultra-light howitzers, which is to be done as per a foreign military sales deal with the US, pending since January 2016, could have some light thrown on it.<br />

There is one more Army plan, to replace its long-retired short-range 44,600 carbines, which is pending since 2010. Along with that, long-running 'short-range surface-to-air missile' project of the Army could also be taken a decision on, which aims to buy an agile missile shield for forward moving forces.<br />
 <br />
Navy, on the other hand, has a range of vessels that are soon going to expire, so replacing them could be discussed in the meeting. These include six new-generation missile vessels and a new range of fleet support vessels.<br />

Defence minister Rajnath Singh among first BJP leaders to congratulate Mamata Banerjee over the victory in the elections

<keyword id="32723" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence">Defence</keyword> Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday projected that the annual Indian defence exports will touch Rs 35,000 crore by 2024 from the current level of Rs 17,000 crore. <br /><br />Singh also said he has no doubt about India emerging as among the three major economies of the world by 2030 andthe defence industries will have an important role to play. "India's defence export is growing. In the last two years our export has been Rs 17,000 crore but keeping in view your (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) capacity in the successive years, I can say that by 2024 Rs 35,000 crore. <br /><br />I am confident about it," the Defence minister said at the Karnataka 'Rajyotsava' event organised at the HAL here. <br /><br /> The minister told the gathering that India cannotremain dependent on imports for long and the Indian companies,especially defence public sector units, will have to play amajor pro-active role in achieving the goal of 'Make In India'as envisaged by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>. <br /><br /> "We don't want to see India as an importing nation. Indian defence exports will touch Rs 35,000 crore by 2024, says Defence

Paris, May 11 (AP) French defence minister Florence Parly has acknowledged "mistakes" that led about two-thirds of troops aboard an aircraft carrier to be infected with the coronavirus.<p>Parly told French lawmakers on Monday that one sailor from the Charles de Gaulle remains hospitalized. Others have recovered.</p><p>The number of positive cases reached a total 1,046 out of 1,760 sailors onboard the aircraft carrier.</p><p>The investigation shows that the virus first infected people after February 26, while the carrier was at sea, Parly said.</p><p>The virus was then introduced again onboard during a stop in the French port of Brest in mid-March, as the country was about to enter into lockdown.</p><p>Parly said the commandment established precautionary measures, like increasing physical distance between sailors, but they were lifted at the end of March because of concerns of the low morale of the troops. </p>She said the virus was not detected onboard before April 5. Bengaluru, <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> plans to spend 130 billion dollars on military modernisation in the next 7-8 years to strengthen its security apparatus, <keyword id="7706628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-minister-rajnath-singh">Defence Minister Rajnath Singh</keyword> said on Wednesday.<br /><br />Speaking at the 'Aero India' show here, the Minister said: "We have taken many steps to strengthen our security apparatus recently. Domestic manufacturing of bigger and complex <keyword id="32723" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence">defence</keyword> platforms has now become the focus of our policy under the <keyword id="9215149" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="atmanirbhar">Atmanirbhar</keyword> <keyword id="2592711" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-abhiyan">Bharat Abhiyan</keyword>. We plan to spend 130 billion dollars on military modernisation."<br /><br />To achieve the twin goals of self-reliance and exports, he said, a target has been set to achieve a turnover of Rs 1,75,000 crore, including exports worth Rs 35,000 crore in aerospace and defence goods and services by 2024.<br /><br />He pointed out that India holds the potential to become a reliable supplier of defence equipment to many friendly nations. "We have a strong and diversified Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises sector, having more than 5,000 active units," the Minister said.<br /><br />Talking about 'Aero India', he said that India today offers a <keyword id="9602850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="unique-opportunity">unique opportunity</keyword> in defence and aerospace manufacturing. "This opportunity comes as a 'sangam' or confluence of rising demand, greater innovation, conducive policies and maturing ecosystem in defence and aerospace manufacturing sector," he said. <br /><br />The Minister said that in aviation sector, the air show and aviation exhibition is one of the brightest galaxies which offers a wide variety of options, solutions, partnerships and, most importantly, opportunities.<br /><br />Singh expressed gratitude to the Defence Ministers of Maldives, Ukraine, Republic of Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Comoros and Madagascar, who were present on the occasion, and others who joined in virtually.<br /><br />About 540 exhibitors, including 80 foreign companies, defence ministers and delegates, services chiefs and officials from more than 55 nations are participating in the event.
