He accused Donaldson's Feastables brand of trademark infringement by naming its peanut butter-flavored bar "Deez Nuts."</p><p>The name is "confusingly similar and phonetically equivalent" to Dee's Nuts, the complaint says. Dee's Nuts products are sold in 34 states, it says, and Ditore has held the trademark since 2012.</p><p>Ditore founded Dee's Nuts more than a decade ago, the complaint says, in memory of his grandmother. The name "paid homage to her and her comedic flair," it says.</p><p>Donaldson, meanwhile, is known as YouTube's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/mrbeast-controversy-waitress-car-logo-2023-3">major philanthropist</a>, giving away cars, houses, and thousands of dollars to fans. He's also exploded in popularity for his major social experiments, such as recreating <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/mrbeast-recreats-squid-game-watch-youtube-cash-prize-2021-11">his own real-life "Squid Game."</a></p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/whats-it-like-to-work-for-mrbeast-biggest-youtuber-world-2023-11">Former staff recently spoke with BI</a> about what it was like to work with the YouTuber, describing demanding hours, incredible stunts, and an "addictive" lifestyle.</p><p>Donaldson founded Feastables in January 2022. It <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-youtuber-mrbeast-feastables-uses-giveaways-data-to-sell-chocolate-2022-5">made $10 million in its first few months</a> and caused a stir online when Donaldson <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/mrbeast-asks-fans-tidy-grocery-store-shelves-feastables-competition-2023-3">asked fans to tidy up shelves</a> of bars in grocery stores for a chance to win $5,000.</p><p>Donaldson's interest in the phrase "Deez Nuts" probably stemmed from an internet meme that emerged in 2016, when an Iowa teenager <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fake-campaigns-and-antisemitic-pacs-the-fec-has-a-verification-problem-2022-11">launched a presidential campaign</a> under that name. The phrase has since become a widespread gag.</p><div type="image" title="YouTuber MrBeast posing with his Feastables chocolate range." height="4500" width="6160" msid="105993813" hostid="261" sizebytes="1803900"></div><p>The complaint sought for Feastables to cease using "Deez Nuts" or any phrase that resembled the name Dee's Nuts.</p><p>On December 6, the court granted a permanent injunction against Feastables Inc, stating the company could no longer use "Deez Nuts" on its packaging.</p><p>The company and its employees are "permanently enjoined from manufacturing, or causing to be manufactured, purchasing, importing, exporting, advertising, marketing, distributing, offering for sale, selling or commercially exploiting in any manner, snack foods bearing the Dee's Nuts Mark, and/or reproductions, counterfeits, copies or colorable imitations thereof, including but not limited to, the DEEZ NUTZ mark," the final order reads.</p><p>As of Thursday December 14, "Deez Nuts" bars are still available for purchase on the Feastables website, with a 10-pack costing $29.99.</p><p>BI has reached out to representatives for Donaldson and Dee's Nuts for comment.</p>

Ditore to select a trademark that paid homage to her and her comedic flair, hence DEE'S NUTS was created."</p><p>But the peanut company appears to find nothing funny about the famous YouTuber's similar sense of humor.</p><p>On August 25, Dee's Nuts filed a lawsuit against MrBeast's <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/mrbeast-feastables-youtube-hershey-buffett-musk-candy-chocolate-short-stocks-2023-7">Feastables</a>, accusing the brand of trademark infringement by naming one of its chocolate flavors "Deez Nuts."</p><p>Dee's Nuts says in the lawsuit that the name is "confusingly similar and phonetically equivalent" to its own brand name. The platform's incredibly popular text-to-speech feature, which originally rolled out in late 2020, now appears to feature a different female voice than its original, leading to users testing its ability to say a variety of words and phrases. Now, TikTok users are putting the new voice through its paces, testing out its capacity to say multiples of the same word along with various lewd or prank-related phrases.</p><p>Reports of a new text-to-speech voice <a href="https://www.insider.com/tiktok-new-female-text-to-speech-voice-2021-5">began to emerge on TikTok on Monday</a>, with users posting videos reacting to the new tone, which has distinctly different vocal inflections from the previous text-to-speech voice. The exact reason for the change is unclear, though it comes after a professional voice actor, <a href="https://www.insider.com/professional-voice-actor-sues-tiktok-text-to-speech-2021-5">Beverly Standing, filed a lawsuit against ByteDance</a>, TikTok's parent company, alleging that it had used recordings of her voice without permission for the text-to-speech function.</p><p>Most notably, they're posting about how the new text-to-speech voice says the words "deez nuts." <ul class="summary-list"><li>My oldest child was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 7 years old. </li><li>Now he is 13 and a full blown teenager, with eye rolling and moodiness. </li></ul><p>When he was 7, my oldest son was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/symptoms-of-adhd-time-to-see-psychologist-2023-9">diagnosed with ADHD</a>. In the years since his diagnosis, his ADHD has manifested in many ways: hyperactivity, impulsivity, inattention, loss of focus, etc. He's a textbook case, and it makes parenting him harder.</p><p>I grew up in a time when <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/parenting/how-to-explain-autism-to-kids">awareness of neurodiversity</a> was more limited, but by the time I became a parent, I had a pretty good idea of what it looked like. I knew it would add a wrinkle or two.</p><p>Last fall, that same kid turned 13. In the months since his birthday, his teendom has manifested in many ways: he sleeps late, he hides in his room, he rolls his eyes, and he's moody. He's a textbook teen, and it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mom-of-6-teens-shares-why-witnessing-best-parenting-tool-2023-4">makes parenting him a lot harder</a>.</p><h2>I don't know how to tell if he's being just a teen</h2><p>I knew <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/parenting-teens-is-a-balance-too-close-or-too-far-2021-12">having a teenager</a> would bring new challenges. We joke about the terrible 2s, but it's the terrible teens that most parents fear. After all, we remember being teens ourselves, and even the most delusional among us can admit we were no picnic. I knew what I was in for.</p><p>What I didn't know was how <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/my-kids-have-adhd-what-learned-from-experts-2022-5">his age and his ADHD</a> would combine to expose my deficiencies as a parent. Not because his teen angst is especially extreme or his ADHD symptoms have intensified, but because it is hard for me to separate the two.</p><p>I have trouble differentiating my 13-year-old's typical 13-year-oldness from actions that are caused or influenced by his neurodiversity.</p><h2>We need to guide him without crushing his self-esteem</h2><p>One of the first things my wife and I learned after my son's diagnosis is that many <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/parenting-a-child-with-adhd-helped-me-face-my-diagnosis-2023-1">ADHD kids</a> struggle with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/late-adhd-diagnosis-relief-2024-3">self-esteem</a>. They tend to hear a lot of criticism — I'm not the only person who misinterprets behavior — and can't help but internalize it, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mdedge.com/psychiatry/article/23971/pediatrics/dont-let-adhd-crush-childrens-self-esteem">damaging their self-image</a>.</p><p>To counteract that, my wife and I constantly emphasize that ADHD makes your brain different, not worse, and assure our son that those differences can be harnessed into strengths. Unfortunately, it's not always easy to convince him of that.</p><p>The problem is teenagers do a lot of things that inspire scolding and criticism.</p><p>As kids grow up and start yearning for a level of independence that is suddenly becoming available to them, their eyes get bigger than their stomachs (only figuratively; anyone with a teen knows their stomachs are bottomless pits), and they often reach for too much at once. It's our job to rein them in with a little discipline.</p><p>Discipline doesn't have to mean punishment or lectures; it means taking a clear-eyed look at misbehavior, reflecting on what could have and should have been done differently, and reinforcing the importance of learning from those mistakes.</p><h2>I'm trying to be a better dad for him</h2><p>Newsflash: teenagers aren't the most open-minded recipients of serious discussions about behavior (or about anything), and having substantial conversations with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/mental-health/types-of-adhd">ADHD teens</a> requires even more patience and understanding. It's even worse when your dad is lecturing you for doing things your brain struggles not to do. Especially when he doesn't understand that.</p><p>I'm trying to get better.</p><p>I can't separate the ADHD-inflected aspects of my son's personality from the rest of him any more than I can prevent him from being a teenager. Nor do I want to. His ADHD is a part of who he is, and stripping it from him would be no different than stripping away his sense of humor (although if I never hear another "deez nuts" joke, it will be too soon).</p><p>But that's fine because my job is not to stop my son from growing up or to eliminate his neurodiversity. It's to understand him better and what he's going through and lovingly parent all of it.</p>

My teenager has ADHD. Sometimes it's hard to differentiate between teen behavior and his condition.  

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Two recently established political committees appear to violate FEC regulations.</li><li>One committee uses a potential candidate's name without their permission. The other includes antisemitic language in its name.</li></ul><p>On November 12, following a speech from retired lieutenant general H.R. McMaster at the <a href="https://richmondforum.org/mcmaster/">Richmond Forum</a> in Virginia, a man says he found himself so inspired that he formed a political committee to support McMaster for president in 2024. </p><p>His mistake? Naming the PAC "<a href="https://docquery.fec.gov/cgi-bin/forms/C00828335/1661359/">H.R. McMaster for President.</a>" Federal regulations generally prohibit committees from using the name of a prospective candidate in their committee's name.</p><p>Then, two days after the McMaster filing, another man filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to form a committee with completely different — and hostile — intentions. The campaign committee is named "Peter Y. Liu for U.S. Senate 2024 Against Jew Supremacy in America." It appears to violate an FEC policy for using obscene language.</p><p>In the meantime, however, anyone perusing the federal government's latest campaign filings could reasonably conclude that McMaster has launched a run for the presidency — he most certainly has not — or come across official documents strewn with hate speech.</p><div type="image" title="H.R. McMaster" height="1164" width="1552" msid="95541831" hostid="261" sizebytes="48942"></div><p>They're the latest examples in a years-long <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super-pac-election-fec-racism-doxxing-government-trump-biden-2020-7">series of shenanigans</a> taking place in one of the federal government's less-traveled corridors. And it may be weeks before federal officials do anything about it.</p><p>FEC spokesperson Christian Hilland told Insider that the man who created the pro-McMaster committee could fix his situation by amending the filing to make it a "draft committee." This allows someone to use a prospective candidate's name to essentially encourage them to run for office — and raise money toward that goal.</p><p>A notable instance of this type of committee: the "<a href="https://ballotpedia.org/Ready_PAC">Ready for Hillary</a>" PAC, which promoted a Hillary Clinton presidential campaign before she formally announced her intentions to run for the White House during the 2016 election.</p><p>Peter Marcia, the man listed as creating the pro-McMaster committee, could not be reached for comment.</p><p>As for Liu's antisemitic committee name, the FEC has a process for dealing with that — but it's a protracted one.</p><p>FEC commissioners adopted a <a href="https://www.fec.gov/updates/fec-adopts-interim-verification-procedure-for-filings-containing-possibly-false-or-fictitious-information-2/">policy in 2016</a> to have agency staff flag any political committees that include "fictional characters, obscene language, sexual references, celebrities (where there is no indication that the named celebrity submitted the filing), animals, or similarly implausible entries" in their names.</p><p>The policy in part arose from a <a href="https://publicintegrity.org/politics/deez-nuts-puts-federal-election-commission-on-bozo-patrol/">rash of bogus presidential candidates</a> — led by an Iowa teenager who launched the "Deez Nuts" presidential campaign, but also including Star Trek Captain <a href="http://docquery.fec.gov/pdf/066/201508209000880066/201508209000880066.pdf">Jean-Luc Picard</a>, <a href="http://docquery.fec.gov/pdf/945/201508199000863945/201508199000863945.pdf">Queen Elsa</a> from Disney's "Frozen," former Cuban President <a href="http://docquery.fec.gov/pdf/418/201508219000925418/201508219000925418.pdf">Fidel Castro</a>, Jedi knight <a href="http://docquery.fec.gov/pdf/491/201508239000927491/201508239000927491.pdf">Obi-Wan Kenobi</a>, and <a href="http://docquery.fec.gov/pdf/374/201508209000925374/201508209000925374.pdf">Captain Crunch</a>. </p><p>After flagging a suspected sham political committee, the FEC then sends a verification letter to the filer notifying them of potential penalties and asking them to confirm, or amend, their filing.</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super-pac-election-fec-racism-doxxing-government-trump-biden-2020-7">previous Insider reporting</a>, if the committee fails to respond within 35 days or withdraws its filings, the FEC labels the committee as "unverified" and moves the committee's listing to a "download-only spreadsheet buried on the FEC's website." The FEC may also move to "<a href="https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CFR-2002-title11-vol1/html/CFR-2002-title11-vol1-sec102-4.htm">administratively terminate</a>" a committee, as well.</p><h2>A verification crisis across the web</h2><p>As the FEC slowly works to purge hate and fake candidates from its databases, US politicians are also dealing with an influx of imposters on Twitter after its new owner, Elon Musk, implemented new policies regarding verification status.</p><p>Musk, who took over the social media company in late October, made it so anyone — not just public figures, celebrities, journalists, and politicians — can receive the blue verification checkmark on their user profiles for an initial payment of $8.</p><p>Soon after Musk made this decision, verified <a href="https://www.washingtonian.com/2022/11/11/fake-verified-twitter-accounts-are-making-dc-elites-look-filthy/">accounts were created</a> with the express goal of impersonating past and present US leaders, such as President Joe Biden, Sen. Ted Cruz, Gov. Ron DeSantis, and Sen. But don't be fooled by the name; it actually has nothing to do with nuts, and is essentially bite-sized, savory bits of meat jerky. The recipe is based on traditional landjaeger, a sun-dried European sausage.</p><p>Dietz Nuts was not always intended to be an actual product. In fact, it was conceptualized as a stunt to hijack the big game with a play on the popular "deez nuts" meme, an expression used to deliberately interrupt a conversation that became widely popular on the internet.</p><p>"It just so happens that Dietz &amp; Watson has the perfect name to play on that phrase," Steve Red, president and chief creative officer at the brand's agency RTO+P told Business Insider. "That, and the fact that we saw a huge opportunity in the dried-meat snack category made this the perfect idea."</p><p>Dietz &amp; Watson simply couldn't pass up the opportunity, Lauren Eni, the brand's VP of brand strategy, told Business Insider. Not only was it a chance to tap into a big pop-culture phenomenon, but also to do something off the beaten path and stand out in a crowded space, as well as make inroads in a new product category with a new addition to its brand portfolio.</p><p>"We're an 80 year-old heritage brand that's been around for a long time, and yet we're not necessarily top-of-mind for consumers," Eni said. "Our goal is to become a nationally-known brand, and for that we have to evolve and cater to new demographics and markets that we haven't paid attention to - and bring our brand to the forefront."</p><p>And, of course, not every brand thinks it's worth it to shell out $5 million for 30 seconds of airtime during the big game on Super Bowl Sunday either. Every year, a string of brands, for instance <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super-bowl-commercials-2019-list-2019-1">Skittles</a> this year, try to bypass Super Bowl ads by pulling off other stunts instead.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super-bowl-commercials-2019-list-2019-1">Here's the full list of all the Super Bowl commercials we know about</a></em></p><p>Dietz &amp; Watson is also one of them, and has opted for humorous regional stunts during the Super Bowl until now.</p><p>Last year, for example, the brand delivered deli meats and cheeses to Super Bowl parties across Philadelphia in a campaign called "Deli Deli" to troll Bud Light's "Dilly Dilly" ads.</p><p>This year, the brand is running a new ad campaign featuring comedian and "The Office" actor Craig Robinson and his brother, Chris Robinson, to create awareness, amplify the new line of products and drive sales.</p><p>A 30-second spot sits at the center of the effort, which will run primarily across digital and social platforms including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Twitch, and Vevo, among others. The campaign will also tap celebrity influencers to test out and promote the new product.</p><p>Dietz Nuts will be available online starting Tuesday, January 29, less than a week before the big game on February 3. It is being sold on Amazon Fresh and <keyword id="46801" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="prime">Prime</keyword> Now and on-demand convenience delivery service GoPuff, as well as the brand's own website.</p><p>That itself is a strategic move by Dietz &amp; Watson to not only aim for the widest possible reach before the Super Bowl, but it's also efficient targeting. The company has been trying to go deeper into e-commerce, as well as get access to a greater swath of consumer data.</p><p>"E-commerce is big for us right now, and we see a huge opportunity to grow our business there," Eni said. It doesn't appear that West has registered as a candidate with the FEC, according to publicly available records.
