<p>One word: television.</p>
<p><span>At the <keyword id="1753100" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="IGNITION-Mobile">Ignition Mobile</keyword> conference in San Francisco Thursday, Nishar suggested that in 10 years, when you walk into a room with a television in the morning before you go to work, you won't turn on a TV set and listen to an anchor read headlines selected by a producer.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Instead, you'll see all the news you need to know from your network—much as you get from LinkedIn Today, the professional network's personalized news service, on its website and mobile app today.</span></p>
<p>Nishar pointed out that we're already watching television on 4-inch screens—smartphones—and 22-inch screens—monitors attached to our computers.</p>
<p>Once smart, connected televisions capable of running apps become mainstream, what's stopping LinkedIn from becoming the equivalent of a cable channel?</p>

<p>But merely growing traffic is a limiting way to think of the effect mobile can have on your business, Joff Redfern, LinkedIn's mobile product chief, and Deep Nishar, the professional network's top product executive, said in an on-stage interview at Business Insider's Ignition Mobile conference Thursday.</p>
<p>Because LinkedIn's mobile usage was relatively small in 2011, when Redfern joined, there was low risk in trying radical new designs, he told interviewer Nicholas Carlson.</p>
<p>"Mobile gives you a chance to reinvent yourself," said Redfern. "Deep [Nishar] said this was an opportunity to reimagine what LinkedIn could be."</p>
<p>LinkedIn's mobile apps then informed the design of its desktop website, which in turn inspired new versions of its mobile apps. This back-and-forth between mobile and desktop culminated in a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/linkedin-new-profile-page-2012-10">sweeping redesign of the site last year</a>.</p>

AstraZeneca had another rough week

Talent intelligence platform Eightfold AI raises $220 million led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2

The companies that are not doing well, you're going to get [that] news sooner, and the companies that are doing really well, you'll hear about them later," Nishar said.</p><p>"We don't expect all 80-plus investments that we have to be amazing successes," he added, going on to note that eight SoftBank-funded firms had gone public, including Guardant Health and Slack.</p><p>He continued: "We've had really good outcomes, and then things like WeWork which haven't gone quite the way we planned, but we are still in it, we are involved, we are helping the company because we believe the idea at its core is very, very good and they had some governance and execution challenges that we are going to help solve with the next set of management."</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5dbc5f7f2f364a740125fe1a-2400/gettyimages-1079941750.jpg" alt="adam neumann" /><p class="source"><span>Michael Kovac/Getty Images for WeWork</span></p><p class="caption">Former WeWork CEO Adam Neumann.</p><p>WeWork's core proposition is to take out long-term leases on buildings and fit them up to rent out to larger enterprises or smaller startups. The company spiraled to a $47 billion valuation - <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leaked-audio-shows-softbank-hyping-up-weworks-valuation-to-100-billion-in-2018-2019-9?r=US&amp;IR=T">one SoftBank executive predicted a $100 billion valuation</a> - puzzling critics who pointed out that WeWork was no different from any other office-leasing company.</p><p>The firm filed for IPO in August 2019 but pulled the float after intense public criticism of its business model and numbers. A SoftBank partner described WeWork a 'very, very good' business

Human-Centered AI platform and products company Vianai Systems, founded by former <keyword id="6354512" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> CEO <keyword id="6369763" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vishal-Sikka">Vishal Sikka</keyword>, on Thursday announced it has raised $140 million in a Series B round from <keyword id="9240440" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="softbank-vision-fund-2">SoftBank Vision Fund 2</keyword> and other industry players.<br /><br />Vianai said it will use new funds to accelerate the delivery of its human-centered AI platform and products to enterprises worldwide.<br /><br />"In the time to come, AI can play a transformative role in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>n business and Indian society. My dream is to see India's youth as a massive creative force that can use tools, like Vianai's platform, to build human-centered AI systems for India and for the world." said Sikka, Founder and CEO of Vianai.<br /><br />Formed in 2019, Vianai Systems began with $50 million in seed investment.<br /><br />"I am pleased to join Vianai as an advisor. Former Infosys CEO Vishal Sikka's company Vianai Systems raises $140 million led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2

A spokesperson from SoftBank Vision Fund confirmed the news. </p><p>"I want to thank Praveen for everything he's done for the Vision Fund. His deep technical expertise, thoughtfulness and passion for entrepreneurs will be missed. We wish him all the best on his next adventure," a statement from Vision Fund CEO Rajeev Misra said. </p><p>Akkiraju was one of the fund's twelve managing partners, managed investments in both America and Asia, and served as the co-lead on India investments. </p><p>The former Cisco executive joined SoftBank Vision Fund last spring, and has the fund's enterprise software investments. One of Akkiraju's deals was intelligent automation company Automation Anywhere from India, in which SoftBank Vision Fund invested $300 million. Akkiraju currently holds a seat on Automation Anywhere's board. </p><p>On the company board page, Akkiraju has said that he believed that technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and cloud computing were "redefining the way products and services are being delivered." </p><p>SoftBank's first Vision Fund backed some of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wework-uber-oyo-what-like-living-on-softbank-companies-2019-7">biggest names in tech, </a>including Uber, WeWork, and DoorDash. It also has a few sizable investment in enterprise technology companies like the office-messaging service Slack. But doubts about the investment vehicle have intensified after the collapse of WeWork's planned IPO, as well as Uber and Slack's disappointing stock performances. </p><p>SoftBank Vision Fund had initially targeted raising $108 billion in funding for its second act, which aimed to shake up next-generation enterprise technology. Last month, the company's first fund-raising round collected $2 billion, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-11-15/softbank-s-second-vision-fund-is-starting-life-a-lot-smaller">Bloomberg reported</a>. That's less than 2% of the company's original vision. </p><p>Vision Fund declined to comment on what implications Akkiraju's departure would carry for its second iteration. </p><p>No replacement for Akkiraju has yet been announced. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5ae70bc419ee861e008b467d-2400/masa.jpg" border="0" alt="Masayoshi Son" data-mce-source="Koki Nagahama/Getty Images" /><p class="source"><span>Koki Nagahama/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Softbank founder and CEO Masayoshi Son</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Before a Valley startup named Cohesity landed a massive $250 million round of investment led by Softbank's Vision Fund, the founder had to pass muster with Masayoshi Son himself, Softbank's founder and one of the world's richest men.</strong></li><li><strong>It was an unusual and whirlwind meeting at Son's California mansion, wedged into a six-hour layover.</strong></li><li><strong>Cohesity CEO Mohit Aron and Softbank's senior managing partner Deep Nishar shared details of the meeting with Business Insider, and what it's like to be a startup working with the world-renown billionaire.</strong></li></ul><hr /><p><br />Earlier this month, a computer storage <a href="https://www.cohesity.com/press/cohesity-raises-250-million-funding-round-led-softbank-vision-fund/">startup called Cohesity announced that it had raised </a>a massive $250 million round of investment mostly from Softbank's Vision Fund.</p><p>In addition to the usual due diligence, Cohesity founder and CEO Mohit Aron tells Business Insider that he had to pass muster with Masayoshi Son himself, Softbank's founder and one of the world's richest and most prestigious business men.</p><p>"I was naïve," Aron said. "I know investors and the way they work, but I don't know how Softbank worked."</p><p>Right when Aron thought he and Softbank had hammered out the details, he was told there was one final step involved: Son personally approves every deal. "They have $100 billion. How can he approve every deal? But they told me, 'We don't do that many deals. We are very picky'." </p><p>Son's $100 billion Softbank Vision Fund is earmarked for tech that Son thinks will be game-changing. As such it has mostly focused on the trendiest companies, pouring huge investments into companies like WeWork, Uber, Katerra.</p><p>It has also turned Softbank and its wealthy founder into one of the most powerful forces in Silicon Valley these days.</p><p>Cohesity doesn't seem like the typical Vision Fund investment because it offers far geekier technology, software and a cloud service that helps companies manage their large-scale computer storage backups.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/58e3c79f77bb70a0428b5cb7-1152/undefined" border="0" alt="Cohesity Mohit Aron" data-mce-source="Cohesity" data-mce-caption="Cohesity Mohit Aron" /><p class="source"><span>Cohesity</span></p><p class="caption">Cohesity founder CEO Mohit Aron</p></div><p></p></div></div>It's technology has been <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20180621005310/en/Cohesity-Awarded-Technology-Pioneer-World-Economic-Forum">winning awards </a>(and Business Insider <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/51-enterprise-startups-to-bet-your-career-on-in-2018-2017-11#cohesity-a-second-act-for-a-successful-founder-30">named it a startup to bet your career on in 2018</a>) and the company is on track for $100 million in revenue this year, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/softbank-vision-fund-cohesity-enterprise-software-investment-2018-6">it said.</a></p><p>But its true claim to fame is its founder, Mohit Aron, who was an early Google employee and one of the co-founders of another hugely successful <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="enterprise">enterprise</keyword> tech company, Nutanix. </p><p>Aron has known senior managing partner for SoftBank's Vision Fund, Deep Nishar, for years. Nishar was also an early Google employee and a seed angel investor in both Nutanix and Cohesity, as well as a mentor to Aron, a first-time CEO.</p><p>When Aron decided to raise another round, he called his old friend Nishar, confident that the relationship would generate a term sheet.</p><p>And it did (after Cohesity passed the due diligence). But before the $250 million check was cut, which valued the five-year-old company at $1 billion, it had to be personally approved by Son himself. And Aron had to meet Son in person.</p><h2>Guards as big as bouncers</h2><p>Aron describes the meeting as nerve-wracking.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/51c311516bb3f7b603000007-691/masayoshi-son-house-2.png" border="0" alt="masayoshi son house 2" data-mce-source="Google Maps" /><p class="source"><span>Google Maps</span></p><p class="caption">Masayoshi Son broke real estate records when he bought this California house for $117.5 million in 2012.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Son had scheduled a trip to the US and Nishar convinced Son to land his plane in the Bay Area. He carved out a six-hour layover, Aron tells us.</p><p>Aron didn't have to schlep to the tarmac. Son has a mansion in the exclusive Portola Valley and Aron was invited there.</p><p>"Me and my VP of finance, we parked our cars [on the street] and the gate surrounding the property was closed," Aron described.</p><p>"There was a security guard with a walkie talkie and a mike and headphone. He told us to wait on the road, all of us, even when Deep and his team arrived," he said.</p><p>When the gate opened, guards escorted them all into the house. "They look like bouncers. If things go wrong, they can throw me out," Aron thought as he walked beside them.</p><p>The house was gorgeous and tasteful, decorated in Japanese style, as you would expect from a man that founded one of Japan's biggest telecom and tech companies.</p><p>Everyone removed their shoes, as is the Japanese custom, and to Aron's surprise, Son "was at the door to receive us."</p><p>They bowed and shook hands and he followed Son into a conference room big enough to hold the visitors plus a handful of Son's staff. </p><h2>Soft voice, big commitment</h2><p>Son speaks in a soft voice. After he finished, Son's right-hand man asked questions like what are the plans to grow? </p><p>Son merely listened.</p><p>The room seemed to know when he was ready to speak and everyone grew quiet.</p><p>In his soft voice, he asked Nishar questions about the terms of the deal, which Nishar explained including plans for expansion into Asia.</p><p>Then Aron's long-time friend added. "I believe in this team."</p><p>Masa grew quiet again. For 10 seconds, he tapped his fingers on the table, thinking deeply. </p><p>"I was on the edge of my seat," Aron said.  </p><p>And then Son nodded. Aron had passed the test. Cohesity was closer to its $250 million cash infusion as well as the massive international resources that Softbank could bring. </p><p>"Masa and I shook hands again and he was nice enough to accompany us to the door and bowed again," Aron says. When he shook Aron's hand, he said, "Now, this is done, yes?"</p><p>It was a moment of partnership. He's a fellow founder who's been investing for 30 years. He wants to look the founders in the eyes. <p>In a post on the social network's own blog, SVP of Products And User Experience Deep Nishar announced that 38% of LinkedIn's unique visitors come from mobile, and that in some markets, that number has even surpassed 50%. At their event in San Francisco, CEO Jeff Weiner expects the global mobile number will hit 50% within the next year. </p>
<p>On top of this, Nishar also proclaimed that active users on mobile show 2.5 times more activity and engagement than the site's desktop only users.</p>
<p>To capitalize on that trend, LinkedIn is launching <a href="http://blog.linkedin.com/2013/10/23/announcing-linkedin-intro/">LinkedIn Intro</a>, which will integrate LinkedIn user profile details directly into the Apple Mail app for iOS. Intro will only be available on iOS for now, but it's a smart start for LinkedIn, as usage rates are significantly higher on Apple's platform. He likes to travel. </p><p class="p1">Still, he's so good at what he does - building tech products and managing people - that companies from startups to Google have begged him to work for them, turning him into a millionaire and huge success, almost in spite of himself.</p><h2 class="p1">Teen tech star</h2><p class="p1">His phenomenal career story began when he was in high school in Utah.</p><p class="p1">He got an internship at word processing software maker WordPerfect, which was bought by Novell. He worked his way up to product manager by age 18.</p><p class="p1">But Microsoft was killing Novell, so <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Novell hired Eric Schmidt as CEO. <span>T</span><span>hat's when the teenage Smith first met him. </span></span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">A</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">lthough Schmidt didn't end up saving Novell, he did give it a few years of breathing room. Then</span> Novell began tanking again, and Smith quit his high-paying job to go to college in London, studying economics.</p><p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56ff27c991058436008ba601-1500-1125/jared-smith-1 - 1.jpg" alt="Qualtrics Jared Smith" data-mce-source="Business Insider" data-mce-caption="Qualtrics cofounder Jared Smith" /><p class="source"><span>Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Qualtrics cofounder Jared Smith</p></div><p></p></div></div>While in London he learned he was a "horrible" driver. So after he graduated, he took a job in a startup called Juice Software in New York, just to live in a city where he wouldn't have to drive.</p><p class="p1">Juice was started by Kim Scott (who would later lure him to Google). The company designed software for the financial services industry.</p><p class="p1">It launched on September 10, 2001. </p><p class="p1">The next day was 9/11. New York was in tatters, as was Smith's apartment which was near the World Trade Center towers. </p><p class="p1">Ultimately, the company bounced back and was sold to Microsoft. But as soon as he could - and before it was sold - Smith left New York to decompress. He spent a year hitchhiking around South America.</p><p class="p1">Having hitchhiked around Africa in college, he was an "incredibly seasoned traveler" who wasn't afraid of dangerous situations, he said. Still, his trip ended in Caracas, Venezuela, when he got caught in the "oil riots and coup against [President] Chavez. It was really tense," he said. "Tear gas in the plazas and everything else."</p><p class="p1">It was time to go home to Utah.</p><h2 class="p1">A new product and a fistfight</h2><p>Back home, his dad, BYU professor Dr. Scott Smith had been diagnosed with cancer. The prognosis wasn't good. His younger brother Ryan had moved home to be with his dad. They were working in the basement "twiddling around on a survey product" and they asked Smith to help them sell it.</p><p>He looked at the product, declared it "worthless" and built them a new version, which would ultimately become the product used by millions of people and lead the company to big profits and a big valuation.  </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56ff28e49105842b008ba4f4-1732-1299/ryan smith and jared smith.jpg" alt="Qualrics Ryan Smith and Jared Smith" data-mce-source="Qualtrics" data-mce-caption="Qualrics brothers and cofounders CEO Ryan Smith and COO Jared Smith" /><p class="source"><span>Qualtrics</span></p><p class="caption"> Qualtrics brothers and cofounders CEO Ryan Smith and COO Jared Smith </p></div><p></p></div></div>He also convinced Ryan to change the name of the company to Qualtrics, from a variety of product names it was using. "Ryan and I got in a fistfight at a restaurant over that," he laughed.</p><p>The brothers and cofounders are opposites in every way; they disagree often, but they rarely come to blows.</p><p>They usually fight, dig in, then compromise, he said. "Normally, in every argument we're both right."</p><p>Meanwhile, his dad made a miraculous recovery thanks to the doctors at the Huntsman Cancer Center. (Qualtrics just donated a $1 million dollars to Huntsman and launched the <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20160217005573/en/Qualtrics-Partners-Huntsman-Cancer-Foundation-Launches-Major">Five for the Fight</a> campaign).</p><p>With the product built, his dad on the mend, Smith hired the company's first engineer and told his brother he was leaving again.</p><p>He didn't want to work on Qualtrics. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">That was "always Ryan's dream," he said.</span></p><p>He wanted to travel. He bought a ticket to New Zealand intending to hitchhike through Asia.</p><p>Right before he left, Kim Scott called. She was working for Google and was offering him a job that would change his life, and Qualtrics, forever.</p><h2 class="p2">Dragged to Google</h2><p class="p2">Smith didn't want to work there. "I was opposed to work on principal. I was going to go traveling. This tells you how stupid I was," he said. </p><p class="p2"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56ff296d52bcd05c658ba4a3-1284-963/kim-scott.jpg" alt="Kim Scott" data-mce-source="Qualtrics" data-mce-caption="Kim Scott" /><p class="source"><span>Qualtrics</span></p><p class="caption">Kim Scott</p></div><p></p></div></div>This was the end of 2004, right after the IPO when the stock was trading at under $200 and employees' stock options sold for far less than that. </p><p class="p2">Scott wouldn't give up. She flew him out to Mountain View at Google's expense where he reluctantly interviewed.</p><p class="p2">"I think the only reason I got the job is that I didn't really want the job and they thought I was so humble," he says. 'It was like, 'How are you at this?' I was like, 'I suck at this.'"</p><p class="p2">For instance, he says of his programming skills, "I'm a hacker at best. I have good design skills, but I would not consider myself an engineer. I'm not a computer scientist. I'm an economist. Compared to Google engineers, I would never make it in the engineering department." </p><p class="p1">Scott disagrees, calling him a great coder. He saw Google's daunting hiring process as a challenge, and did well, she remembers. And after he was hired, he earned the respect of the Google engineers, who even let him code a few things himself, the first non-engineer at Google given that honor, Scott said. </p><p class="p1">But, according to Kim Scott, Smith's real gift is guiding engineers to build products that wowed the business side:</p><blockquote class="blockquote">I could go to him with an acorn idea and he would go away for a weekend and come back with the whole oak tree, taking conceptually what I meant, making it look beautiful and actually building it. He gets more work done in a 24-hour period than any other human being I've ever encountered.</blockquote><h2>From Google, to quagmire, to Qualtrics</h2><p class="p1">He took the job at Google and discovered he didn't fit in, he recalled, thanks to his time at Novell.</p><p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56ff2a6852bcd01b008ba745-400-300/nishar-1.jpg" alt="deep nishar igintion" data-mce-source="Business Insider / Matthew Lynley" /><p class="source"><span>Business Insider / Matthew Lynley</span></p><p class="caption">Deep Nishar</p></div><p></p></div></div>"I ruffled some feathers," he said. "Google was straightforward and you had to play no games. You just had to use data and be honest. Novell was much more political and all about fiefdoms."</p><p class="p1">With Scott's help, he learned the Google way and did well. He worked on ad products, then on internal tools for the sales team. He learned how to hire and manage.</p><p class="p1">He got stock options, which a New York financial industry friend advised him not to sell off every month like the other employees did. So he held onto them all.</p><p class="p1">One day, he went to lunch with his friend, <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/deepnishar">Deep Nishar</a>, another well-respected product manager. At the end of lunch, Deep asked him to lead Google's products in China.</p><p class="p1">"It didn't make sense. How do you lead products if you don't speak the language? So I turned him down. Similarly stupid to turning Kim down," Smith said.</p><p class="p1">Deep was also persistent, and eventually Smith was talked into the China job, working under "Kai-Fu Lee, the guy we stole from Microsoft," he said. (Lee's resignation caused Steve Ballmer to throw a chair at Lee, and declare war on Google and Eric Schmidt, <a href="http://battellemedia.com/archives/2005/09/ballmer_throws_a_chair_at_fing_google.php">court documents later revealed</a>).</p><p class="p1">Once again, he was scaling an operation from a few people to hundreds, this time in a foreign country.</p><p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56ff2b6291058426008ba4a0-1393-1045/google china.jpg" alt="Google China" data-mce-source="Reuters" /><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Under Lee, Google China grew from 9% market share to 30% share - and to about 900 people, Smith said.</p><p class="p1">Then Google discovered that hackers, presumably from the government, were attacking Google to help track down dissidents. Google went public about it all, but the PR was terrible all the same.</p><p class="p1">Unhappy with the situation, Google yanked its operations out of China, moving them to Hong Kong. </p><p class="p2">"I had a front-row seat through all of that," he remembered. The situation put him, a product manager, in constant contact with some of Google's most senior executives, including Schmidt.</p><p class="p2">Meanwhile, Qualtrics was taking off, too. It had customers. It was profitable. Ryan now had 40 employees and he was calling Smith regularly for advice, hounding him to quit Google and come back to help at Qualtrics.</p><p class="p2">Ryan pressed: How high did Google's shares have to go before he was willing to sell them all and become wealthy enough to quit Google and come work for his startup? Google had been flirting around the $600 mark.</p><p class="p2">"And in a moment of weakness, I gave him the price," he says. It was a price that would make Smith financially well off for life. </p><p class="p1">The day the shares hit that price, Ryan called Smith. "I sold all my shares the same day," he says. Then Ryan flew out, helped him pack and escorted Smith back to Utah. </p><h2 class="p1">'Rude' to VCs</h2><p>The truth was, the whole China thing had also worn him out. But when he got to the startup, he said, "I was bored. A 40-person operation, it took me about 20 minutes a day to manage."</p><p>But the company "was a sales machine" and growing. Soon, he was back to hiring and scaling.</p><p>VCs had also found Qualtrics and were calling. Ryan was "rude" to them, Smith said, and Ryan confirmed. He saw investors like predatory lenders. "Why would I want to take on a mortgage?" Ryan Smith remembers telling them. Ryan also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/qualtrics-becomes-1-billion-business-2014-9">turned down a $500 million acquisition</a> offer.</p><p>But, eventually Ryan decided that he wanted a board of people who had grown huge tech companies. That meant VCs and they would want a stake in the company.</p><p>Smith hated the idea. "I thought it was silly to sell any part of the company because it was doing so well, profitably, growing 100% year on year," he recalled.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56ff2a0a52bcd022008ba710-1500-1125/ryan smith jared smith.jpg" alt="Qualtrics, Ryan Smith, Jared Smith" data-mce-source="Qualtrics" data-mce-caption="Ryan Smith and Jared Smith" /><p class="source"><span>Qualtrics</span></p><p class="caption">Ryan Smith and Jared Smith</p></div><p></p></div></div>So, the brothers fought. They dug in. They compromised. "The detente was if he could raise $100 million, for a small percentage of the company, then we would fund-raise," Smith said.</p><p>Ryan got the terms that Smith demanded.</p><p>And, looking back, Smith said, "Ryan was incredibly right." The cash and the board pushed Qualtrics to grow in new ways. Without it they would have gotten "fat and lazy," satisfied with the old products and the profits it generated, Smith admitted.</p><p>As for the investors, "They've all done phenomenally well. A dream investment," he says.</p><p>While Qualtrics, a private company, doesn't release revenue, and is officially valued at a billion as of its last raise - $<span>150 million in 2014, $220 million total raised</span> - at one point, Smith told attendees at its annual customer conference last month that it was a "multibillion" company. It claims over 8,000 customers. In any case, it's still highly profitable.</p><p class="p1">As Qualtrics grew, Smith implemented all of the employee management tools he learned at Google, plus wrote a few new ones.</p><p class="p1">"<span>I really love building systems that transform organizations</span>" he said. And since Qualtrics is his company, he's been known to take liberties. "Imagine Ryan's surprise when one day he walks in and I've coded something that puts all the salespeople on a curve and made it public. That's radical transparency."</p><p class="p2">The company now has closer to 1,000 employees including seasoned leaders. It just launched a second generation survey products and new data analysis products, retiring the original product Smith built in the basement 12 years ago.</p><p class="p2">And Smith is once again talking about not working.  </p><p class="p1">"I put all the processes, machinery, and management stuff in place to scale the organization. Ryan is the CEO. I've started to slow down and spend more time at my beach house to give execs more space to work. When I left Google, I thought I was retiring and I'd like to end up there again," he said.</p><p class="p1">Then again, if Ryan were to call him and insist he take on something new, he could be dragged in, again. How this economist reluctantly became one of the most successful tech execs you've never heard of

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56c764816e97c61d008b8659-821-616/sukhinder singh cassidy.png" alt="Joyus CEO Sukhinder Singh Cassidy" data-mce-source="YouTube/Women 2.0" data-mce-caption="Joyus CEO Sukhinder Singh Cassidy" /><p class="source"><span>YouTube/Women 2.0</span></p><p class="caption">Joyus CEO Sukhinder Singh Cassidy</p></div><p></p></div></div>A run-in with an incredibly sexist boss at her first Valley job 18 years ago almost convinced Sukhinder Singh Cassidy to quit the tech industry, and give up her entrepreneurial dreams.</p><p>Fortunately she didn't and now she's launched a new startup called <a href="https://theboardlist.com/">theBoardlist</a> that could help the tech industry solve the problem of the lack of woman in the business.</p><p>"Diversity is such a hot topic but I'm only interested in talking about solutions at this point,"<span> Cassidy told Business Insider.</span></p><p><span>Cassidy is </span>a Valley power broker. Today she's the CEO of fashion shopping startup Joyus, which has raised $43 million in venture funding.</p><p><span>But she made her name as</span> an early Google employee, working under Omid Kordestani (now executive chairman of Twitter) and rising to become president of business development of Google's Asia Pacific and Latin America operations.</p><p>And it almost didn't happen.</p><p>She came Silicon Valley at age 26 from New York, after successful stints at Merrill Lynch and British Sky Broadcasting. But at her first job at a tech startup, hired to do business development, her boss relegated her to menial tasks while "coddling" a male sales guy and giving him all the choice business development responsibilities, she recounts. She was told she was "scaring the secretaries" and that she was a "rookie."</p><p>She started to question her own abilities and almost packed up and left the tech industry altogether. Then the company offered a mandatory sexism training and a light bulb went on. Maybe the problem wasn't her, it was her boss.</p><p>A few months later, she quit that job and landed another at a startup called Jungalee, working for Ram Shriram, who would later become one of Google's first investors. She soared at <span>Jungalee, stayed after it was acquired by Amazon, went on to co-found <span>financial services platform </span>Yodlee and take it public, and then jumped to Google.</span></p><h2><span>Time for action, not just talk</span></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56c7671d2e5265b9008b85c6-1607-1205/sukhinder singh cassidy and ryan smith.jpg" alt="Joyus CEO Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, Qualtrics CEO Ryan Smith" data-mce-source="Qualtrics Insights" data-mce-caption="Joyus CEO Sukhinder Singh Cassidy talks with Qualtrics CEO Ryan Smith" /><p class="source"><span>Qualtrics Insights</span></p><p class="caption">Joyus CEO Sukhinder Singh Cassidy talks with Qualtrics CEO Ryan Smith</p></div><p></p></div></div>About a year ago,<span> Cassidy</span> got sick of all the talk and media coverage about how awful it was to be a woman in tech.</p><p>She shared <a href="http://recode.net/2015/05/13/tech-women-choose-possibility/">her own, mostly good experience</a> as well as the results of 100 other female entrepreneurs she surveyed.</p><p>This resulted in the <a href="https://medium.com/@sukhindersinghcassidy/choosepossibility-project-90a217ff0a86#.jkerj8gdr">#ChoosePossibility Project</a>, a list of successful women entrepreneurs, and it ultimately led to her new startup, theBoardlist.</p><p>After talking to the other women founders, and hearing their struggles, she realized that the Valley is only a meritocracy after "you have a <span>body of work, of successes,"<span> Cassidy</span> says.</span></p><p><span>Before you've proven yourself, "<span>people will make judgments on you all day long, on your gender, the color of your skin, your age," she tells us. </span></span></p><p><span><span>"The Valley is entirely obsessed with itself, and incredibly confident they can solve everyone else's problems, which is why people make fun of us when we have our own problems, when we lag in areas like diversity," she says. "But diversity doesn't have to be the Valley's defining characteristic."</span></span></p><p><span><span>So, in typical Valley fashion, <span>Cassidy has</span> launched a tech startup to fix the women-in-tech problem.</span></span></p><h2>More women in the board room</h2><p>theBoardlist, which had been in beta but officially launched this week, helps startups and private companies find women to serve as independent directors on boards, a job hardest to fill and often left unfilled altogether, <span>Cassidy</span> says.</p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56c767442e526558008b862b-513-385/picture 8-109.png" alt="women board room" data-mce-source="aileenaminhas via statigram" data-link="http://statigr.am/p/341398152139643906_11669230" /><p class="source"><span><a href="http://statigr.am/p/341398152139643906_11669230">aileenaminhas via statigram</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>I</span>t's unique because the list of potential female board members comes entirely from recommendations of hand-selected successful Valley entrepreneurs.</p><p>Those <span>entrepreneurs must be invited onto theBoardlist to make a recommendation. People can't nominate themselves, for instance.</span></p><p><span>theBoardlist has already compiled a list of 1,000 qualified women <a href="https://theboardlist.com/our-community">endorsed by about 200 business professionals</a> and is hosting information on about 60 open board seats.</span></p><p>Folks like Box's Aaron Levie, Arista Networks' Jayshree Ullal, Softbank's <span>Deep Nishar, CloudFlare's Michelle Zatlyn have all recommended women as potential board members for theBoardlist.</span></p><p><span>Wholly owned by Cassidy, who says she will not take VC money for it, theBoardlist is a Benefit Corp., a for-profit company with a mission to do good.</span></p><p><span>It is currently funded by sponsors and charges nothing to the people it asks to make recommendations. It will charge a finder's fee to companies and recruiters using the list to fill board seats.</span></p><p><span>The goal is for theBoardlist to earn enough money to sustain itself as it grows, Cassidy says. "Joyus is my venture capital company, my primary focus, where I plan to create my wealth," she explains.</span></p><h2><span>More women, all around</span></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56c767bc2e5265b9008b85ca-800-600/joyus-team.jpg" alt="Joyus employees" data-mce-source="Joyus" data-mce-caption="Joyus employees" /><p class="source"><span>Joyus</span></p><p class="caption">Joyus employees</p></div><p></p></div></div>Cassidy has launched this project because the data shows that when more women are in the board room, companies <a href="http://www.catalyst.org/media/companies-more-women-board-directors-experience-higher-financial-performance-according-latest">are more prosperous</a>.</p><p>And there's a network effect where women leaders bring more women into companies in other roles. </p><p>She's already seen the effect on theBoardlist.</p><p>The men invited to participate nominated on average five women, the women nominated up to 15 women. "The women's networks of qualified women were three times as big."</p><p>She realizes that this project isn't the be-all, end-all when it comes to getting more women into the tech industry.
