The history-making Indian women's hockey team's dream of securing its maiden Olympic medal remained unfulfilled as it lost 3-4 to Great Britain in a hard-fought bronze play-off match at the ongoing Games here on Friday. The Indian women had already created history and surpassed all expectations by entering the semifinals of the Games for the first time. But the maiden Olympic medal remained out of bounds as world no.4 Great Britain, who were gold-winners in the 2016 Rio Games, came out on top in the pulsating encounter. The heartbreak came a day after the Indian men's team ended a 41-year-old medal drought by clinching bronze with a 5-4 win over Germany. The Indians played their hearts out and overcame a two-goal deficit to lead 3-2 at half time. But a desperate Great Britain gave their everything in the second half and scored two goals to snatch the match from India's hands. India scored three goals in a span of five minutes through Gurjit Kaur (25th, 26th minutes) and <keyword id="809404" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vandana-Katariya">Vandana Katariya</keyword> (29th) to stun Great Britain. But the Britishers found the net four times through Elena Rayer (16th), Sarah Robertson (24th), skipper Hollie Pearne-Webb (35th) and Grace Baldson (48th) to emerge winners. India's best performance in the Olympics was a fourth place finish in the 1980 Moscow Games. In that edition, there were no semifinals as only six teams competed in a round-robin format with the top two featuring in the final. As expected, Great Britain started strongly and had the lion's share of ball possession and chances in the first quarter. The Indians made some circle penetrations but failed to create any clear cut chances and were also guilty of losing possession at the midfield. India goalkeeper Savita Punia stood out in the first quarter, denying Great Britain on at least three occasions. She first made a fine save from Great Britain's first penalty corner in the second minute and then pulled off a double save in the 12th minute to keep India in the hunt. In between Great Britain also wasted another penalty corner. Britain began the second quarter on the same pace and took the lead when Elena Rayer's push went into the net after getting a deflection of <keyword id="2183249" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deep-Grace-Ekka">Deep Grace Ekka</keyword>'s stick. Minutes later, the former gold-medallists secured their third penalty corner which yielded no result. Lalremsiami came close to equalising for India only to be denied by the experienced Maddie Hinch, who brilliantly kept away the Indian striker's reverse hit. India got their first penalty corner soon but wasted it. Great Britain doubled their lead in the 24th minute when Robertson scored with a powerful reverse hit from top of the circle. A minute later, India got two back-to-back penalty corners and Gurjit converted the second chance to reduce the margin. Two minutes later, Salima Tete's brilliant run from the left flank earned India another penalty corner and Gurjit was once bang on target to draw parity. The momentum shifted completely in India's favour as they started to attack with numbers and threatened the Great Britain goal frequently thereafter in the second quarter. After <keyword id="704258" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sharmila-Devi">Sharmila Devi</keyword> hit wide from a one-on-one situation, the Indians stunned Great Britain when <keyword id="3439" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vandana">Vandana</keyword> tapped in an open ball inside the circle to go into half time with a 3-2 lead. Down by a goal, Great Britain were expected to come out hard after resumption and they did exactly that forcing the pace of the game, securing a penalty corner two minutes into the third quarter but India defended well. But a minute later, Great Britain drew level through skipper Hollie Pearne-Webb. The Indians then secured two more penalty corners but couldn't utilise them. Savita stood like a wall in front of the Indian goal and pulled off some brilliant saves to deny Great Britain. A second from the end of third quarter, India secured the seventh penalty corner but to no effect. The fourth quarter completely belonged to Great Britain as they pressed hard on the Indian defence in search of goals. The ploy worked as the Indian backline wilted under pressure and conceded four quick penalty corners, three of them in succession and Baldson scored from the last one with a flick that went through Savita's legs. India had one more chance in the form of a penalty corner in the last eight minutes but Great Britain defended stoutly to deny Gurjit a hat-trick. Thereafter, Great Britain did just enough to keep India at bay and to ensure a finish on the podium. It looked like India's fairy-tale run, which saw them reach the semifinals after losing their first three matches, will continue when drag-flicker <keyword id="264193" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gurjit-Kaur">Gurjit Kaur</keyword> put them ahead in the second minute. Reaching the final would have assured India a medal but that was not to be as Argentina came back strongly and ended India's dream. Skipper <keyword id="11790982" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="maria-noel-barrionuevo">Maria Noel Barrionuevo</keyword> scored a brace of goals as Argentina emerged 2-1 winners to reach the final and set up a clash with reigning world champions the Netherlands on Friday. India will play Great Britain for the bronze medal on Friday. The Indians were slack in midfield and defence on Wednesday and made a lot of mistakes that resulted in their good start turning into a close defeat. India made a brilliant start as they earned an early penalty corner and went into the lead. Gurjit Kaur put India ahead in the second minute when she sent a powerful flick past the experienced Argentine goalkeeper Maria Belen Succi to give her side the lead. Gurjit, who struck the winning goal against Australia in the quarterfinal, has grown more confident in the knockout matches and on Wednesday sounded the board with a powerful flick that did not give goalkeeper Maria time to react. The Indians dominated the first quarter and held possession. Vandana Katariya and Navneet Kaur made some good runs into the shooting circle. The Indians created a couple of good chances but could not double their lead. Argentina established their ascendancy into the midfield as the Indians fell back to defend, left too many spaces and the South Americans slowly took control of the match. They struck early in the second quarter and levelled the score when skipper Maria Noel Barrionuevo made no mistake in the 18th minute as she took the penalty corner in the absence of Agustina Gorzelany, their short-corner expert. The second quarter belonged to Argentina as the Las Leonas firmly established their superiority. They attacked from the left flank as forward Merino Delfina teamed up with midfielder Agostina Alonso and Valentina Llanos to break open the Indian defence and caused a lot of troubles for Deep Grace Ekka, Gurjit, and Udita. Argentina went into the lead in the 36th minute when skipper Marina Noel capitalised on another penalty corner and the ball took a deflection off an Indian player's foot and went into the goal. The umpire checked with the video umpire whether it had hit the Indian defender's leg above the knee. The video umpire replied in the negative and the goal stood, making it 2-1 for Argentina. The Los Leonas, with coach Carlos Retegui urging them on, created some good moves and put the Indian defence under tremendous pressure, which made several mistakes but survived as the score remained 2-1 in Argentina's favour as the team went into the last quarter. The Indians were aggressive and created some chances and Vandana and Sharmila came close; they earned their fifth penalty corner but found the Argentina defence, and the goalkeeper thwarted them from getting the equaliser. Vandana (4th, 17th, 49th minutes) achieved a rare feat by becoming the first Indian woman hockey player to score a hat-trick in the history of the Olympics. Young Neha Goyal (32nd) was the other goal getter as the Rani Rampal-led side registered its second consecutive win at the Games. South Africa's goals came from the sticks of Tarryn Glasby (15th), skipper Erin Hunter (30th) and Marizen Marais (39th). With two wins from their final two pool matches, India have finished the group stages with six points from five games. By virtue of this win, India have jumped to the fourth position in Pool A, but Ireland still have a chance to leapfrog the Indians. India's fate now depends on the outcome of the last Pool A match between Great Britain and Ireland. The Indians will have to wait till the evening to know their fate. A Ireland loss or a draw will be enough for India to seal their place in the quarterfinals. The top four teams from each pool will qualify for the knockout round. Needing a win to stay alive in the competition, the Indians meant business and pressed hard on the South African defence from the start. In doing so, India secured two penalty corners in the first two minutes of the match but dragflicker Gurjit Kaur's poor execution continued in the tournament. Still it didn't take India long to open their account and in the fourth minute, Vandana gave her side the lead, tapping in from close range after being set up by Navneet Kaur's great run from the right flank. India kept up the pressure and penetrated the South African circle many times without much success. But seconds from the end of first quarter, a lapse in concentration from the defence cost India dearly as South Africa drew level through Tarryn Glasby, who deflected in a long shot from Taryn Mallett. India had enough time to regain their lead through a penalty corner but wasted the opportunity. Two minutes into the second quarter, Vandana restored India's lead when he deflected in Deep Grace Ekka's flick from their fourth penalty corner. The Indians had three more chances to extend their lead in the second quarter but they couldn't do so. The Rani Rampal-led side got two more penalty corners which they wasted, and then, Neha Goyal's effort from open play was saved by the South Africa goalkeeper. Just like in the first quarter, India gave away their lead seconds away from half time when Hunter found the net from her team's first penalty corner. Two minutes after the change of ends, Neha restored the lead again, deflecting in a Rani hit from a penalty corner as the Indians executed a fine variation. The fragile Indian defence wilted under pressure once again, when South Africa drew level for the third time in the match, through a Marais strike. South Africa enjoyed a good run of play in the initial minutes of final quarter and, in the process, secured three penalty corners quickly, but this time the Indian defence did enough to thwart the dangers. In the 49th minute, a brilliant Vandana saved the day for India when she deflected in Gurjit Kaur's flick from another penalty corner. Thereafter, the Indians fell back and looked contend to keep the possession as South Africa pressed hard. Two minutes from the final hooter, the Indians successfully referred a penalty corner decision given against them.
