<ul><li>Several trains came to a halt at the Murshadpur train station in <keyword id="6357713" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> on Friday because the station master was lying unconscious in a drunken stupor.</li><li>According to a disturbing report in the Hindustan Times in April 2017, 15% of the <keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian Railways</keyword> train drivers failed the alcohol test at the end of their journey</li><li> In all, 281 train drivers have failed the alcohol tests between 2012 and 2016.</li></ul> Trains delays are so commonplace in India that most remain unphased when they hear about one. And while there are reasons aplenty - most avoidable and some unavoidable - the story about last Friday’s delay was quite something else. A number of trains came to a halt at the Murshadpur train station in Uttar Pradesh because the station master was lying unconscious in a drunken stupor. Around 80 km from Delhi, the Murshadpur station lies on an arterial long-distance train route. It is the station master’s responsibility to give the green signal for the trains to proceed. Needless to say, because of his absence these trains had no choice but to stop and wait for the signal. Unable to reach the missing station master Deep Singh, harried railway officials headed to the station along with a replacement station master only to find him passed out in his office surrounded with empty bottles of alcohol. A senior railway official told the <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/national/no-signal-drunk-station-master-679855.html">Deccan Herald</a> that “Singh was dead drunk and could barely walk”. Sources also told the paper that Singh was later taken to a local hospital where a medical examination revealed a very high level of alcohol in his blood. Railway officials have now suspended Deep Singh and have ordered an investigation. Now, while most may think that surely this bizarre incident is unprecedented, it is in fact one of many. In April 2016, the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/51666158.cms?utm_source=contentofinterest&amp;utm_medium=text&amp;utm_campaign=cppst">Times of India</a> reported a similar incident where the stationmaster at <keyword id="6355588" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajasthan">Rajasthan</keyword>’s Munabao station near the India-Pakistan border was found passed out in his room. In this case, Rajuram Choudhary, the station master, was a repeat offender and had been put on notice thrice earlier for the same reason. And if that were not enough, according to a disturbing report in the <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/drink-driving-major-issue-for-indian-railways-too-fourfold-rise-in-train-drivers-failing-alcohol-test/story-M2USyd8QIJYx9dVlrnp7HK.html">Hindustan Times</a> in April 2017, 15% of the Indian Railways train drivers, also known as loco-pilots, failed the alcohol test at the end of their journey. Which basically means they were ferrying hundreds of passengers in an inebriated state. In all, 281 train drivers have failed the alcohol tests between 2012 and 2016.

Meanwhile, many large corporations, including Microsoft, have begun utilising water-saving tap aerators to control water flow in the Bagmane Business Park offices. The city’s water board, the BWSSB, has also launched four mobile apps to help tackle the city’s water crisis. Attempting to bridge a gap between the water department and the citizens it serves, these apps will help residents book water online, apply for borewell permissions, report water misuse and more. At 24% of its total capacity, reservoirs across Karnataka are also drying up. Despite growing shortages, the state government has assured that the Cauvery River reservoir that supplies water to Bengaluru holds sufficient water levels to last at least until June. After that, the pre-monsoon and monsoon rains are expected to replenish the water resources. However, the supply remains much lower compared to the demand, and the only way to survive this summer could be to adopt drastic water-saving measures and a few good spells of pre-monsoon showers.

As per Hoovu Fresh, traditional or ‘puja’ flowers are the flowers an average Indian consumer uses almost daily - mostly for prayers or simple, everyday activities. “Most Indians interact with traditional flowers - jasmine, marigold, chrysanthemum, bud roses, etc - every single day. They use it in their morning prayer, to decorate their hair, to hang up in their auto, car, offices. Traditional flower usage is a ubiquitous need, just like the daily newspaper or milk,” states Hoovu Fresh. Combining their knowledge of agriculture with the untapped potential of the industry, the duo came up with a way to reduce the turnaround time from harvest to reaching the customers. Hoovu Fresh claims to have reduced the turnaround time to 12-24 hours from 36-48 hours. Prior to starting Hoovu Fresh with her sister, she worked with multiple publications like the Times of India, Deccan Herald, the Stanford Daily and the Bay City Beacon, among others. The Karuturi sisters are currently chasing the sweet smell of success, but Hoovu Fresh has been in the news long before Shark Tank India came knocking. This included one of Modi's most trusted aides and Minister for Internal Security Amit Shah. Reported cases of the coronavirus in India — the second worst-hit country in the world after the US — have only just begun to drop from a September high of nearly 100,000 new cases per day, <a href="https://www.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6">according to Johns Hopkins University</a>. Regional ministers did not escape that toll, with 16 testing positive for the coronavirus by August, <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/dh-galleries/photos/here-is-a-list-of-indian-ministers-who-have-tested-positive-for-coronavirus-869039#1">according to Indian newspaper the Deccan Herald</a>. Modi has not fallen sick.<h2>Russia</h2>Several Russian lawmakers have contracted the coronavirus and recovered throughout the pandemic, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-prime-minister-reveals-testing-positive-for-virus-2020-4?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin</a> and Vladimir Putin's head spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.Overall, at least 60 members of Russia's State Duma — its lower house — have been infected with the coronavirus throughout the pandemic, <a href="https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2020/10/07/coronavirus-in-russia-the-latest-news-oct-7-a69117">according to The Moscow Times</a>. At least 10 of those were hospitalized in September, <a href="https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2020/09/22/10-russian-lawmakers-hospitalized-with-coronavirus-a71508">the paper reported</a>.<h2>UK</h2>Prime Minister Boris Johnson <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uk-prime-minister-boris-johnson-tests-positive-for-coronavirus-covid-19-2020-3?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">was hospitalized</a> with COVID-19 in late March. Two other senior members of the government — Health Ministers Matt Hancock and Nadine Dorries also tested positive in March, while Johnson's most senior adviser, Dominic Cummings, and Scottish Secretary Alister Jack, showed symptoms. <h2>Iran</h2>Iran, one of the first countries to see large numbers of infections, saw around <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/8-percent-iran-parliament-has-coronavirus-it-released-54000-prisoners-2020-3?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">8% of its entire parliament test positive</a> in March amid an atmosphere of denialism amongst its leadership. Early in the pandemic, Iran likely had the hardest hit world government. This figure included <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/one-of-irans-vice-presidents-has-been-infected-with-coronavirus-2020-2?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">Vice President Masoumeh Ebtekar</a> and the Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi.

The COVID-19 outbreak at the White House is the worst to hit any major government

<ul><li>The board of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (<keyword id="30351" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL">BSNL</keyword>) has approved slashing 54,000 jobs in order to relieve financial stress. </li><li>The recommendations were made by a 3-member panel that was constituted in the face of mounting losses in the aftermath of Jio’s aggressive pricing.</li><li>Other telecom operators like Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel have also been under pressure since Jio’s entry into the space.</li></ul>The board of the Indian state-run telecom operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL), <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/national/bsnl-okays-laying-off-54k-staff-but-will-wait-govt-726643.html">approved </a>the cost-cutting that could result in as many as 54,000 employees losing their jobs. The layoffs won’t happen till after the election and the officials are deferring to the new government to take up the challenge before taking the final call according to the Deccan Herald. The three member panel consisting of Rekha Jain as the coordinator as well as Vishal Gupta and Ajay Pandey — all of whom are professors at the Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad (IIM-A) — was put together to find solutions as BSNL started to reel from the financial stress. And, then make their recommendations to the board. The company’s losses started to mount after Mukesh Ambani’s Jio entered the telecom space. In the last fiscal, the company’s overall revenue fell by 20%.

 BSNL isn’t the only company that has fallen victim to the aggression from Mukesh Ambani-owned enterprise. TataDoCoMo was one of the first casualties resulting in an acquisition by Bharti Airtel in 2017. Airtel was also able to <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Industry/rws5uR2FeOti3o3nU7AirL/The-shakeup-in-Indias-telecom-sector.html">acquire</a> Tata group’s wireless phone business and Telenor for virtually nothing. Soon after, one of the top telecom services providers in the country, Aircel <a href="https://www.teleanalysis.com/analysis/aircel-mostly-blamed-jio-bankruptcy-27828">blamed</a> Jio when it filed for bankruptcy in 2018. Two of the biggest telecom players in the country, Vodafone and Idea, were also forced to merge mid-2018 to form the world’s second-largest telecom company. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has been <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/tdsat-junks-trais-predatory-pricing-order/articleshow/67077045.cms?from=mdr">accused</a> of passing regulations that are in favour of Jio that discriminate against its competitors — BSNL, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea — under the guise of being a ‘new entrant’ in the market. One of the new regulations was shot down by the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal because it appeared to be “an unnecessary abdication of its regulatory powers by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India”.

A state-run Indian telecom company is laying off 54,000 employees in an election year

The one thing that has changed is social distancing. People standing in queues outside state-run establishments are maintaining a distance of a few feet between them to reduce the chance of an infection.  However, some reports suggest that the videos of social distancing at liquor stores is only optics. Reporters with <a href="https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/covid-19-videos-social-distancing-kerala-liquor-shops-just-optics-120723">TNM</a> saw a very different picture on the ground. One brave soul petitioned the Kerala High Court to make way for the home delivery of alcohol. Instead, he was slapped with a ₹50,000 fine as per <a href="https://www.livelaw.in/news-updates/online-liquor-delivery-to-home-154132">LiveLaw</a>’s report. The case for home delivery of alcohol The petitioner argued that since alcohol shops were crowded during peak hours, it’s not safe for him to go out and actually buy what he needed. Instead, he suggested alternative ways in which delivery would be feasible during the Coronavirus outbreak.

 However, Judge Nambiar was not amused. “It is with a deep sense of exasperation and a tinge of disgust that I write this judgment,” he said. “The petitioner's conduct in filing this frivolous petition at a time like this, while making a mockery of the salutary concept of access to justice — which this institution strives to guarantee — also ridiculous the functioning of this noble institution,” he added before instructing the petitioner to address the costs and send them to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund. Sources at the Kerala State Beverages Corporation told the <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/national/south/covid-19-keralas-liquor-shops-open-for-revenue-813994.html">Deccan Herald</a> that despite the emergency around Coronavirus, there hasn’t been much of a fall in liquor sales. Others within the government feel that the shutting down of liquor shops may trigger alcoholics to drink copious amounts of alcohol in the name of stocking up before stores shut down. This could lead to a more dangerous situation, sources told <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/coronavirus-scare-social-distancing-for-keralas-tipplers/articleshow/74731096.cms">ET</a>. To ensure that necessarily precautions are taken, local authorities have posted additional guards at every Indian-made foreign liquor outlet to enforce social distancing. Several incidents of violence and stone pelting reported from interiors of localities such as Jaffarabad, Brahmapuri which adjoining Maujpur. At Jaffarabad metro station, a large number of people were seen carrying tri-colour and sticks in hands.  12:00 PM As protests rage on in Delhi over opposing factions over Citizenship Amendment Act, a high level urgent meeting was convened in the national capital to discuss the events. Union Home Minister Amit Shah met representatives of different political parties including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to appraise them on the status of violence caused by the protests. As many as seven people died in the violence in which also includes a police head constable. The number of injured also rose to 150 as of 12:45 today. The protests which took a new turn late Saturday (Feb 22) in the Maujpur area and raged on as pro and anti CAA clashed with each other. It was reported that some used guns, other pelted stones and some even tried to set a petrol pump on fire. All of North-eastern Delhi remained tense as Section 144 was imposed in the areas of Maujpur, Kardampuri, <keyword id="3354144" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chand-Bagh">Chand Bagh</keyword> and Dayalpur.areas on Monday. However, the riots and protests went on through Monday night showing little indications of cooling off. On the contrary, the number of deaths, injured and civic complaints to the fire department is swelling by the hour. In 2007, <keyword id="2102599" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dr-Ganesh-Rakh">Dr Ganesh Rakh</keyword> set up a 25-bed Medicare General and Maternity Hospital in the Hadapsar suburb of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Civic-Panel-Approves-Pune-Light-Rail-Project-Despite-Protest/articleshow/37172407.cms">Pune</a>, with the aim to help underprivileged patients. But, today he’s doing more than just that. 
 As his hospital has grown, so has the intensity of his work. In a bid to fight <keyword id="56887" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Female-infanticide">female infanticide</keyword>, Dr Rakh kicked off a unique initiative on January 2012. In line with the initiative, Dr Rakh wouldn’t charge any delivery fees if a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/How-Indian-NGOs-are-marrying-Philanthropy-with-Social-Innovations/articleshow/46426703.cms">girl child</a> is born. 
 
Not just that, the entire <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=hospitals">hospital</a> celebrates the birth of the girl by distributing sweets. 
 
In an interview with Deccan Herald, Dr Rakh had said that female infanticide is rampant because of the presence of regressive social norms, which he believes are not only anti-women, but also anti-girl child. 
 
He further states that as a medical professional, he has seen the torture that a mother undergoes when she comes to know that she has delivered a girl. 
 Hence, Dr Rakh tried doing his bit to help reduce the social stigma of delivering a <keyword id="6366837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="girl-child">girl child</keyword> and has waived off maternity charges in over 200 deliveries, both normal and caesarian. 
 
Initially, his initiative was met with a lot of apprehension from his gyanecologists and paediatricians. 
 
“When I told them that I’d decided that the hospital will bear the expenses of neo-natal care, they were understandably quite skeptical as to whether I would be able to run a hospital or not,” he admits. 
 
Relatives gathering on the day of the delivery are a given sight in any hospital. But, what we fail to notice is the scenario that happens after they are made aware of the sex of the infant born. 
 
“They hug each when a boy is born and disappear when a girl is born,” Dr Rakh states. 
 
It was this scenario and the added mental trauma on expecting mothers that changed Dr Rakh’s thinking and lucky for him, he found support from unexpected quarters. 
 
As word of his initiative kept spreading, he was contacted by a host of colleagues and doctors working in interior districts such as Ahmednagar, Beed and Solapur wrote to him saying they will stop carrying our procedures such as unwarranted medical termination of pregnancy and indiscriminate sex discrimination tests in solidarity and welcome a girl child by motivating families. 
 
Some doctors, like Dr Pravin Dungarvar who runs Anand Hospital at Kunjirwadi at Haveli Taluka started charging half the amount in case a girl was born, in a bid to show his support for Dr Rakh’s initiative. 
 
While in Solapur district, Vinod Kekan, the sarpanch of Vanjarwadi village had even announced a prize of Rs 10,000 to any person who gave information or helped stopped female foeticide. 
 
Kekan thought if one man could do it, why couldn’t an entire village?
