The child is thought to have been a girl.</li></ul><p>Archaeologists have discovered the 6,000-year-old skeleton of a child in the "Cave of Horrors" in <keyword id="6355882" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="israel">Israel</keyword>'s Judean Desert alongside ancient <keyword id="454578" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dead-Sea-Scrolls">Dead Sea scrolls</keyword> as well as what may be the world's oldest basket.</p><p>The Cave of Horrors takes its name from the 40 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mass-grave-6200-year-old-skeletons-massacre-study-2021-3?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">skeletons</a> found there during excavations in the 1960s. Researchers found the child's remains naturally mummified in the dry atmosphere of the cave, which can be accessed only by climbing ropes.</p><p>A CT scan revealed that the child, who had skin, tendons, and even hair partially preserved, was between 6 and 12 years old, according to <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/first-dead-sea-scroll-fragments-decades-found-cave-180977251/">Smithsonian Magazine</a>. The child is thought to have been a girl.</p><p>"It was obvious that whoever buried the child had wrapped him up and pushed the edges of the cloth beneath him, just as a parent covers his child in a blanket," Ronit Lupu, a prehistorian at the Israel Antiquities Authority, said in a statement. "A small bundle of cloth was clutched in the child's hands."</p><p>The skeleton was found along with ancient Dead Sea scrolls, which are among the earliest texts written in Hebrew.</p><div type="image" title="World's oldest basket" height="5217" width="6957" msid="81619870" hostid="261"></div>The newly discovered fragments of the 2,000-year-old scrolls are Greek translations from the biblical books of Nahum and Zechariah, found in the Book of the 12 Minor Prophets in the Jewish Tanakh.<p>The only Hebrew included in the text, however, is the name of God, <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/dead-sea-scrolls-new-israel-b1817703.html">The Independent</a> noted, and the scrolls are thought to have been hidden during a Jewish revolt against Rome, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/dead-sea-scrolls-discoveries-are-first-ancient-bible-texts-be-n1261182">NBC News</a> added.</p><p>What appears to be the world's oldest recovered basket, dating back 10,000 years, was also found, as were arrowheads and coins thought to be from the Bar Kochba revolt period in other caves, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/16/israeli-archeologists-find-new-dead-sea-scroll-fragments">The Guardian</a> reported.</p><p>The authority commissioned the excavation back in 2017 following reports of plundering by looters, The Guardian noted.</p>

For the first time in 60 years, they've found a new cave that they say their excavations show once held Dead Sea Scrolls, making the total number of Dead Sea Scroll caves 12 instead of 11 as was previously thought.</p><p>"This is one of the most exciting archaeological discoveries, and the most important in the last 60 years, in the caves of Qumran," Oren Gutfeld, an archaeologist at the Hebrew University's Institute of Archaeology and director of the excavation, <a href="http://new.huji.ac.il/en/article/33424">said in a Hebrew University press release</a> announcing the news.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/589c83146e09a81c008b6323-2000/hu170208caveentrance.jpg" alt="new dead sea scrolls cave" data-mce-source="Casey L. Jars that once held scrolls were broken open, their contents removed. Iron pick axe heads from the 1950s were stored in the tunnel leading into the cave, which the researchers say indicate that Bedouins uncovered the site in the mid-20th century, removing the scrolls.</p><p>They left behind fragments of pottery, a parchment which had yet to be written on, cloth that the scrolls had likely been wrapped in, along with flint blades, arrowheads, and a decorative stamp that helps date the remnants in the cave.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/589c80613149a1fc778b49b6-2400/undefined" alt="dead sea scrolls new discovery" data-mce-source="Casey L. Until now, it was accepted that Dead Sea scrolls were found only in 11 caves at Qumran, but now there is no doubt that this is the 12th cave," said Gutfeld. A new Dead Sea Scrolls cave has been discovered - and it changes what we thought we knew about them

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Writer Jude Roth Hausen lost her friend Daniel Davis Aston to the Club Q shooting in November.</li><li>Her post commemorating Daniel went viral, and she was swallowed in a deluge of online support and sympathy.</li></ul><p>On November 20th, I woke up at 1:26 pm to the news that there had been a shooting in Colorado Springs at a venue called Club Q. Daniel Davis Aston, one of my closest and oldest friends, was a bartender and assistant manager there. I knew that he had been at work that night, as he was most nights. At 1:33 pm, I frantically sent him a text. I tried to remain calm. </p><p><em>"Hey are you okay?"</em></p><p>It was never answered. </p><p>I sat in bed scrolling through Twitter in a panic, trying to find information. At the time, all that had <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2022/12/27/colorado-red-flag-law-club-q-shooting/">been released</a> was that there were five dead and nineteen injured, and search results only yielded this unhelpful and sterile fact over and over again. I was searching desperately for names but found nothing. I checked my messages every few seconds for Daniel's response. Finally, after scrolling through post after post that shared the same headline, I saw what I was praying I wouldn't find: Someone had posted a photo of my friend with his arm around a fellow bartender named Derrick Rump. The caption read, "Heartbroken to share that we lost these beautiful boys last night." </p><p>The following moments were a blur. I ran to my roommate and collapsed to the floor. I sobbed with a kind of theatricality that would come to feel comical later. I couldn't breathe; I couldn't form a coherent thought. It felt as if the walls were closing in around me, like the air had gone out of the room altogether. For over an hour, I weathered the storm until I could finally catch my breath and gain control of my thoughts. Finally, I lifted my head, and I wrote. And hit publish.</p><div type="image" title="screenshot of Instagram post author shared of Daniel" height="1088" width="944" msid="96891592" hostid="261"></div><p>I hadn't expected or prepared for the possibility that anyone outside of our circle of mutual friends would see it. <a href="https://twitter.com/area51lovedoll/status/1594440115790962690">My tweet</a> that shared my Instagram tribute to him climbed in numbers <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/ClMmZBbva4T/">across the different platforms</a>. It was reshared, and it accrued thousands of likes, hundreds of comments, and millions of views. I received a deluge of responses, all of them with a central theme: People had been brought to tears, my words were a "gut punch", and they felt as if through my writing about Daniel, they had known him too. I was floored by the reaction — in shock and confused. I was grateful, but still in a haze of processing that obscured that anything happening was real. It hadn't sunk in that he was truly gone, even with thousands of people telling me that they were sorry for my loss.</p><p>The next few days blended together into what felt like one long night. I went through the motions. Online, the messages and comments continued to pour in. I sat motionless and refreshed my Twitter feed continuously for over 18 hours each day. I committed to liking every comment and message. It was all I could do, as I had nothing else to give. It was impossible for me to extend my genuine gratitude to each person when I had so little within myself to give. It was overwhelming, terrifying, and comforting all at once. </p><p>The chaos of my online cocoon continued to grow bigger and untethered. It was a whirlwind of interactions — likes, replies, quote retweets, journalists begging for comment, messages of love, support, and shared grief in my inbox. A <a href="https://twitter.com/area51lovedoll/status/1594761551596109850">poem I had written</a> about Daniel climbed in engagement numbers as well, which only added to the sea of responses I felt I needed to acknowledge. Every post across social media platforms seemed to be about the shooting: <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/3749399-bidens-call-owners-of-club-q-site-of-colorado-mass-shooting/">Joe Biden</a> contacted the owners of Club Q; Celebrities were sending me and others comforting messages; I was even approached to write an <a href="https://www.them.us/story/daniel-davis-aston-remembrance-essay">article about Daniel</a>. I tried to be the best advocate I could be for him, a mouthpiece of sorts trying to ensure that he would be remembered as the complex, loving, kindhearted activist he was. </p><h2>'Losing the attention of the public felt, in a way, like losing Daniel twice.'</h2><div type="image" title="A photo of Daniel Davis Aston provided by the author." height="1536" width="2048" msid="96891593" hostid="261"></div><p>Weeks crept by. The news cycle shifted away from coverage of the shooting. Daniel's funeral services came and went. The public returned to their lives. Time continued on, but I stayed in place. I thought that the loss of support would be more gradual, but instead, it was a sharp tapering off into an abrupt silence. One day I woke up and the world no longer seemed to remember or care. There were no more posts about him. No one sharing his photos. No one left to say his name but those of us who knew him.</p><p>Despite this, it still felt like a betrayal to talk about anything other than Daniel, or to give the impression that I had moved on. I felt as if I were betraying him by expressing any emotion besides sadness or anger — like smiling before the eyes of the world that had turned away from me. With the position I'd been given, the pedestal upon which my pain had been placed, it was difficult to feel as if there was anything else I was allowed to do. And that truth was something that my audience reinforced.</p><p>People didn't understand when I had to find humor in the situation I was in. They projected their own wrenching sadness onto me, and it often felt patronizing. If I tried to share funny stories about Daniel, or about the comical absurdity of the grieving process, I get comments saying it brought people to tears, and that it was a "gut punch." It seemed like those who followed me for the tragedy didn't want to see me moving on, or trying to find things to laugh or smile about. People had come for my viral posts about the eviscerating grief I experienced shortly after the shooting, and they only wanted more of the same. </p><p>From the tragedy forward, I felt I couldn't live only for myself anymore — I had to live for him. I had to be a conduit for him, a vessel through which to keep him alive, in any form. This only became harder as the public began to quiet their interest. It became uncomfortably clear that I was sharing my grief, and the process of putting myself back together, with a shrinking audience who seemed to be growing bored and moving on.</p><p>Losing the attention of the public felt, in a way, like losing Daniel twice. I experienced a second surge of grief from a mass forgetting where there had been a mass appreciation. As much of a consolation as it is to have been able to share him with the world however briefly, there's a deep loneliness when I'm reminded that those who rallied around his memory can no longer recall his name. In the week following the shooting, having so much focus on Daniel and seeing so many people celebrating him online felt like I hadn't lost him at all…because he was all around me. I felt him, I saw him everywhere I turned. The tragedy of his death reverberated across queer and trans communities worldwide.</p><p>With the world grieving alongside me, it appeared like I was surrounded by support. In reality, however, I was struggling to navigate my grief and I was counting the days until that support inevitably waned. I was left with a mess of complicated emotions; I was truly grateful for having had as much support as I did. but in its absence, I only became angrier and more isolated, coupled with the guilt of feeling greedy for wanting the world to have loved him more. </p><p>Many of us have been desensitized by the nature of recurrent tragedies and the increasing speed of the online news cycle. I knew from the start that the focus on Daniel's death was temporary, and that there would come a time that it would disappear. With the<a href="https://research.uh.edu/the-big-idea-mag-spring-2021/stories/the-24-hour-news-cycle.html#:~:text=The%2024%2Dhour%20news%20cycle%20contributes%20to%20the%20CNN%20Effect,every%20little%20bit%20of%20news."> 24-hour news cycle</a>'s hunger for more information, aided by social media and how fast posts go viral, I saw firsthand just how insatiable we all were for content. I tried to console my feelings of anger and abandonment by telling myself that I was lucky to have been given a few weeks to share my grief with the world, rather than just a few days. </p><h2>'Everyone else gets to move on, but those of us still mourning Daniel's absence will be left to pick up the pieces alone. '</h2><div type="image" title="A photo of Daniel Davis Aston provided by the author." height="954" width="1271" msid="96891594" hostid="261"></div><p>There is only so long that an audience can vicariously grieve, especially with a revolving door of new tragedies and stunts to hold our attention. This was one of the most painful realizations: That, to many, my grief was only content to consume voyeuristically. With the demand for more of the same content they had come to see, the process of surviving and carrying on after loss is of little interest. And in a matter of weeks or days, there will be a new round of news articles and viral posts to take its place. Everyone else gets to move on, but those of us still mourning Daniel's absence will be left to pick up the pieces alone. </p><p>I am more grateful than I can express for the support I've received in sharing my stories about Daniel with the world. It's more than most people dealing with grief get to experience. For a moment, however short, he was celebrated by millions of people. That alone is a consolation, even if it was brief. </p><p>Although it may be selfish, I wish it could have lasted longer. I wish that strangers continued to check in, ask about Daniel, and repost his legacy. I wish that he was remembered more for the joy of his life than the tragedy of his death. I can't say for certain if this would bring me closure; Grief rarely responds the way we want it to. All I can do is adapt, carry on, and ask instead that people make it a point to not forget. </p><p>Think of Daniel, Derrick, Kelly, Raymond, and Ashley from time to time. Commemorate them on the anniversaries to come. Don't let this pass by as one of many senseless tragedies to be forgotten. I can't ask the world to share my grief with me forever, but I can ask that others share in the act of remembering — that no one is carrying the memory of their loved ones alone.</p>

I went viral after losing a loved one in the Club Q shooting. It only made me feel more alone.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Jules Maury is the head of Scott Dunn Private, an ultraexclusive division of a luxury travel firm.</li><li>She was raised in a wealthy family and learned how to plan luxury trips by taking them herself.</li></ul><p>Jules Maury was 12 when she made her first hotel booking. She and her sister, who was 10 at the time, had left boarding school in Britain to fly to Geneva, where they'd reunite with their parents. But there was no one there to greet them: The girls' father, a president at Dow Chemical, had accidentally booked his flight to arrive the following day.</p><p>But Maury wasn't fazed. "My first instinct was to get into a taxi and ask to be taken to the <a href="https://www.beau-rivage.ch/en/">Beau Rivage</a>, which was the only five-star hotel name I could remember," Maury told Insider. "And when we got there, I said they should call Dow Chemical and they'd pay the bill." Her parents, fraught with worry, arrived the next day. "And there we were, two princesses, safe as houses, sitting upstairs having room service."</p><div type="image" title="headshot of Jules Maury" height="1438" width="1918" msid="94846006" hostid="261" sizebytes="121672"></div>Decades later, Maury remains resourceful, connected, and matter-of-fact as the head of <a href="https://www.scottdunn.com/us/scott-dunn-private">Scott Dunn Private</a>, the London-based ultraexclusive division of the luxury-travel firm Scott Dunn. She handles trips for the world's wealthiest people along with a team of four travel advisors and six booking specialists. It's an invitation-only division.<p>"We're not telling you where to put $2 million in stocks and shares to get the best returns — we're telling you where to spend it to get the most exciting experiences," she said.</p><p>Maury's clients often come to her as referrals from wealth managers like Killik &amp; Co. She said she doesn't charge hourly consulting fees for trip planning, as some travel specialists do, but relies on commissions from suppliers; the industry standard is around 10% of spend, but she said it can vary. She added that such considerations never affect her recommendations — she values the trust her clients place in her far more than a little extra cash.</p><p>Here's what her job is like and how she broke into the industry.</p><h2>She got her start booking vacations for friends</h2><div type="image" title="woman in a helicopter" height="768" width="1024" msid="94846007" hostid="261" sizebytes="96684"></div><p>Maury stumbled into her role as a secret weapon for one-percenters' vacations by accident. She started booking friends' holidays for fun while living overseas as the wife of an expat executive.</p><p>Without a visa, Maury wasn't able to work where they lived in places like Australia, Vietnam, or St. Barts, but her friends came to her for advice, as Maury was steeped in globetrotting. Her childhood included skiing in St. Moritz, spending summers on Lake Como, and even living in the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Hong Kong for three months.</p><p>"I'd been to, or lived in, so many luxury places," she said. "And it became embedded in me how fascinating it was to travel, see new cultures and new people, and I loved to share it with other people."</p><p>When she moved back to the UK full time in 2008, Maury turned this expertise into a career. While working for a different travel company, she was headhunted by Andrew Dunn for her current role. The interview was structured around her knowledge of travel, and she was asked about insightful experiences she would apply to different destinations to make a trip stand out.</p><p>"By then, my knowledge, what I had picked up from traveling, was probably second to none," she said. "When a member talks to me who's someone ultra-high-net-worth, I know because I've lived their life."</p><p>Her insider perspective is why many requests for trips that Maury receives are surprisingly vague. Maury's specialty is money-can't-buy experiences, or what she calls "fairy dust": scoring a primetime dinner reservation at <a href="https://guide.michelin.com/us/en/pais-vasco/es-donostia-san-sebastian/restaurant/arzak">the Michelin-starred restaurant Arzak</a> in San Sebastián next weekend when it's booked solid for months, for instance, or securing a meeting with a curator at Jerusalem's Israel Museum to view a facsimile of the Dead Sea Scrolls. ("The originals are in a vault, because of their frailty, and you need government clearance to access them," Maury said.)</p><p>But there are limits even to her connections. She says her black book, built up over years of traveling and networking, is filled with anyone interesting she thinks might be worth weaving into a travel journey or story. "But I've failed to get the entire Eiffel Tower privatized," she said. "Well, at least so far."</p><h2>Planning 6-figure vacations is her specialty</h2><div type="image" title="woman with a hot air balloon" height="1155" width="1536" msid="94846008" hostid="261" sizebytes="238196"></div><p>Upcoming trips she's planned include a private sailing trip around the Galápagos Islands for a multigenerational family reunion and another down the Nile for six women who are leaving their husbands at home. Their full-time guide, one of the world's foremost Egyptologists, can whisk them into pyramids and archeological sites that are usually off-limits to tourists.</p><p>Another group, consisting of three women and their daughters, will celebrate graduation with a trip to France, featuring private after-hours shopping at the department store La Samaritaine.</p><p>Recently she arranged an $800,000 weeklong superyacht tour for a family over the holidays that included special access to islands, a private villa, beach picnics, and snorkeling.</p><h2>When the going gets tough, Maury gets going</h2><div type="image" title="a group of three people on safari" height="1536" width="2048" msid="94846009" hostid="261" sizebytes="563940"></div><p>Maury's greatest value to her clients is in how deftly she can fix problems when they arise.</p><p>Take the client who was staying at the Amanzoe resort in Greece this summer when <a href="https://www.travelweekly.com/Travel-News/Hotel-News/Amanzoe-closes-wildfire">the hotel caught fire</a> because of nearby wildfires. "We airlifted her somewhere else on a private jet," Maury said.</p><p>Another client of hers was about to head to Bali when Mount Agung erupted. She woke to a call at 6 a.m.</p><p>"I said to them, 'Do you trust me?' and they said yes, so I told them to fly to London, and when they landed I'd let them know where they were going," Maury said. Within hours she'd planned a custom trip in Cambodia, complete with a private dinner in an off-limits temple and luxury accommodations at Amansara.</p><p>"The magic was the fact they landed in London and had no idea where they were going, but we sorted it out," she said. "It was a true crisis, but it ended up being so magical — they said it was one of the best holidays they've ever had."</p><p>The company has a team in San Diego and another in Singapore who cover Maury's off-hours, but she said that if someone needs to speak with her late at night or on the weekends, she'll always take the call and then use her backup teams to look after the issue.</p><h2>But even an expert travel planner lacks some knowledge</h2><p>Maury still relishes the chance to travel, and she spends much of the year on the road, often attending luxury travel shows like <a href="https://www.iltm.com/cannes/en-gb.html">ILTM in Cannes</a> or <a href="https://purelifeexperiences.com/">Pure in Marrakech</a>. When her team bought out <a href="https://www.octola.com/">Octola in Lapland</a> for a family, she hadn't seen it personally, so she flew there and back from London on a budget airline for a reassuring site inspection.</p><p>Maury acknowledged she has a few gaps in her knowledge: She's not yet visited Antarctica — a buzzy destination — or set foot in Japan. She said that while she plans to remedy both as soon as she can, she delights in the fact that parts of the world remain new to her.</p><p>Her company pays when she's on a familiarization trip, be it a hotel or destination, and the budget depends — Chile would be more than a long weekend in Malta. She pays for her own trips, which are frequent; she said her thirst for learning outpaces the time she has. She said she's sometimes offered reduced rates or complimentary hotel services, but she doesn't take any comped flights.</p><p>This year alone, Maury has traveled to Lisbon, Portugal; Montenegro; Israel; Marrakech, Morocco; Malta; and Sardinia.</p><p>"Someone asked me the other day, 'Where is your favorite place?' and I honestly answered, from my heart, 'It's where I haven't been yet,'" she said.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I quit my 9-to-5 job in New York City to work as an entertainment host for a major cruise line.</li><li>The first few weeks were overwhelming, but I quickly adjusted to the <keyword id="15482" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="lifestyle">lifestyle</keyword>. </li><li>The living quarters are incredibly small and have mandatory weekly inspections.  </li></ul><p>Growing up, I was often told I was going to "make it" in New York City, and I always believed it was what I wanted. </p><p>So when I graduated from Temple University in 2014 with a journalism degree, I <a href="https://www.insider.com/rich-fled-nyc-coronavirus-i-want-to-leave-too-2020-4">made my way to NYC</a> and got a job at a highly regarded publication in the biz.</p><p>But my two-hour commute and cubicle filled with boxes wasn't glamorous at all. I started getting bald spots in my hair <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-know-if-youre-stressed-2018-4">from the stress</a> and often daydreamed about <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-about-living-in-a-camper-van-what-it-is-like">traveling the world full-time</a>, scrolling endlessly on Instagram to discover how I could get paid to be a nomad.</p><p>When I found out that onboard cruise-ship employees get a paycheck to <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> and meet new people every day, I auditioned to be an entertainment host for <a href="https://www.insider.com/adults-disney-cruise-line-2018-9">a major cruise line</a>, got the job, and left NYC for good on my first contract: seven months out of Baltimore, Maryland, a mere two hours from my hometown.</p><p>I joined despite feeling discouraged, and now, six years and 65 countries later, here are the seven <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-i-wish-i-knew-before-buying-a-secondhand-rv-travel">things that have surprised me the most about the job</a>:    </p><h2><strong>There are barely any Americans working onboard</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="ship crew" height="760" width="1013" msid="82660883" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>I was coined "<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@ericafromamerica?lang=en">Erica from America</a>" the very first day I boarded the ship.</p><p>As the sole American on a bus full of employees (some who'd worked on ships for over 20 years) about to join their contracts, <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-normal-in-the-us-but-considered-weird-2018-8">I stood out like a hotdog</a> at a hamburger party.</p><p>There were only nine other Americans working onboard my first ship, and every contract after that, the same pattern followed. The crew comes from over 150 countries, but there's a very small percentage of Americans working onboard.</p><p>Even today, everyone in my life calls me Erica from America.</p><h2><strong>The first week can be incredibly overwhelming and stressful </strong></h2><p>The whole onboarding process is always intimidating, from presenting all of your medical paperwork to officers to being thrown headfirst into learning what each fire extinguisher does. I was learning how to operate a deadly, watertight door on my first ship day.</p><p>Safety is the most important thing <a href="https://www.insider.com/foods-you-shouldnt-eat-on-a-cruise-2018-7">on cruise ships</a>. So whether they're returning from vacation or are a brand-new hire, every crew member has hours of safety training during their first weeks in addition to their job prep.</p><p>I cried in the bathroom every day for a week straight. It is a lot to handle after hours of <keyword id="100790" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="traveling">traveling</keyword> across the world to join a ship, but life onboard gets so much easier after the first few weeks.</p><h2><strong>The crew cabins are seriously cramped</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="cruise ship living space" height="543" width="724" msid="82660884" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Cut a big walk-in closet in half and <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-be-a-good-roommate-2018-2">put two random humans</a> from different countries in there with a wardrobe that has just enough space on each side for exactly five hangers and you have yourself a crew cabin.</p><p>Despite the fun of having a mini-fridge to store foods we're not supposed to keep and a flat-screen TV that can swing to face the top bunk, the shower curtain clings to your butt, and the bathroom is so tiny that you can bathe, brush your teeth over the sink, and use the toilet all in one swoop.</p><p>And don't forget mandatory cabin inspections once a week where staff checks how orderly our space is. </p><h2>The dating culture is dramatic but can also be amazing</h2><p>I expected to experience college-like drama on the ship, but the reality was even wilder.</p><p>Picture adults who are away for seven to nine months at a time, working extremely hard and under stress but having an incredibly glamorous life trotting around the world.</p><p>Some are married. Some are single. Some are married but "single" on ships. Some are undercover. <a href="https://www.insider.com/experience-going-to-a-matchmaker-2017-12">Some are truly amazing partners</a> - but most of the time, you find out the hard way that they're not.</p><p>There are so many heartbreaks but also plenty of amazing love stories on the seas. </p><h2><strong>It wasn't hard for me to adjust to the lifestyle</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Erica in Rome" height="810" width="1080" msid="82660886" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Working <a href="https://www.insider.com/unique-cruises-to-go-on-2018-10">onboard a ship</a> isn't for everyone, and I have seen many people quit within their first month.</p><p>We typically work eight to 12 hours per day, with no days off for seven months straight. However, it's easy to see that the crew who work onboard absolutely love the lifestyle and what they do. You won't make it otherwise.</p><p>As crew members, we wake up in a different country virtually every day and appreciate our free moments 10 times more. Being in such an amazing group is the most special thing I've ever felt a part of - we have the biggest sense of community and morale.</p><p>Plus we have a three-month vacation between contracts to eat junk food, sleep all day, and catch up on every bit of pop culture.</p><h2><strong>Crew life is a blast, even after work</strong></h2><div type="image" title="ship crew having fun" height="2802" width="3736" msid="82660888" hostid="261"></div><p>Cruise-ship crews are known for partying after work, and let me tell you, we (sometimes) live up to that standard.</p><p>There are very strict alcohol policies for the staff, but the crew-bar drinks are cheap and <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelorette-party-destinations-more-to-do-than-drink-2018-8">the parties are so much fun</a>, so learning a level of self-control is crucial.</p><p>There is an entire HR team on board dedicated to the staff who plan multiple events a week, offer support of all kinds, and organize crew tours onshore.</p><div type="image" title="dog sledding in Alaska" height="3024" width="4032" msid="82660889" hostid="261"></div><p>Some staff positions, like mine in entertainment, get more time off in the ports than others because we don't work with guests as much while docked. </p><p>So I was lucky to have a lot of chances onshore to <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-leave-job-and-travel-according-to-someone-who-did-it">explore depths of the world</a> I never thought possible, like dog sledding in Alaska, running around Petra in Jordan, and cave diving for glowworms in New Zealand, to name a few.</p><h2><strong>I was totally </strong><strong>alone</strong><strong> on this journey</strong></h2><div type="image" title="erica in the desert" height="703" width="936" msid="82660890" hostid="261"></div><p>Although I made amazing friends who feel like family onboard, I realized after a while that I was truly on my own throughout this ship journey.</p><p>Constantly being surrounded by hundreds of crew members and passengers and becoming close with everyone you encounter is special, but no one will ever experience it exactly the same way as me.</p><p>Crew members share a sense of closeness because of our common familiarity with being global citizens, but every time I came home from a contract, it was harder to relate to friends and family on land.</p><p>I'm so lucky to have a supportive family who came to visit a ton. It's hard to describe to someone who's never <a href="https://www.insider.com/family-of-5-lives-on-a-boat-full-time-photos">experienced ship life</a>, but it can get lonely while also being the most enthralling and fulfilling thing you could ever choose to do. </p>

On Saturday, digital strategist Kendall Brown <a href="https://twitter.com/kendallybrown/status/1241519413486129156">tweeted a widely circulated photo</a> of a note allegedly written by Hobby Lobby founder David Green, in which the openly conservative Christian businessman repeatedly mentions the power of God as part of his justification to leave stores open.</p><p>In the note to employees, Green reportedly wrote that the decision was informed by a message from God bestowed upon his wife Barbara Green, who he described as a "prayer warrior." </p><p>"In her quiet prayer time this past week, the Lord put on Barbara's heart three profound words to remind us that He's in control. Guide, Guard, and Groom," Green reportedly says in the letter. "We serve a God who will Guide us through this storm, who will Guard us as we travel to places never seen before, and who, as a result of this experience, will Groom us to be better than we could have ever thought possible before now." </p><p>Green wrote that while the future remains unclear, the company can "rest in knowing that God is in control," adding that the company may have to "tighten our belts" moving forward. </p><p>"While we do not know for certain what the future holds, or how long this disruption will last, we can all rest in knowing that God is in control," he wrote. "The Company's leaders are doing all they can to balance the need to keep the Company strong and the need of employees. To help ensure our Company remains strong and prepared to once again when this passes, we may all have to 'tighten our belts' over the near future.'"</p><p>Hobby Lobby did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment. </p><p>Though the company wrote in a <a href="https://newsroom.hobbylobby.com/notice-regarding-covid-19-virus/">note on its website</a> that if a worker exhibits symptoms it "will send that employee for medical care to self-isolate at home," it did not state if they will be eligible for paid sick leave. According to the company's 2017 benefits summary guide, its most recently available public document on benefits, only salaried employees are eligible for paid sick leave, leaving hourly workers without protection in the face of the coronavirus. </p><p>Green's note was widely lambasted on Twitter, as several users took to the platform to call out the company for the alleged policies, including writer and editor Parker Molloy who dubbed Hobby Lobby one of "the most deceptively evil companies on the planet." </p><p>The Twitter furor comes on the heels of a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/forged-dead-sea-scrolls-at-museum-of-the-bible-lead-to-great-scientific-detective-story/2020/03/20/08e9ca70-695a-11ea-abef-020f086a3fab_story.html?outputType=amp">recent investigation</a> that discovered pieces of the Dead Sea Scrolls featured at the Museum of the Bible - an organization that is majority funded by Hobby Lobby and the Green family - were fake. In 2018, the museum and Hobby Lobby also found itself at the center of controversy for <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/museums/hobby-lobbys-illicit-artifacts-are-returned-to-their-iraqi-homeland/2018/05/02/3f59842a-4e44-11e8-84a0-458a1aa9ac0a_story.html">smuggling 4,000 ancient artifacts</a> from Iraq without authorization. </p><p>Hobby Lobby had previously drawn ire in 2014 for its <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2014/07/02/politics/scotus-hobby-lobby-impacts/index.html">Supreme Court </a>case that challenged a mandate issued by the Obama administration that required companies to provide health care options for contraceptives. Hetta, who was born in Egypt and says he came to the United States due to religious persecution for his Christian faith, is suing the Museum of the Bible alleging racial profiling, discrimination, and humiliation. </p><p>Hetta claims he was racially profiled and interrogated by security officers when visiting the museum. Further, the complaint states that the Museum of the Bible continued to investigate Hetta and advised the FBI that he was a possible terrorist, security, or criminal threat. </p><p> "Mr. Hetta's visit to the Bible Museum turned into a Kafkaesque ordeal of humiliation, detention, interrogation and ultimately an FBI counter-terrorism investigation caused by the Museum's false reporting," Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, Hetta's lawyer and executive director of the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund, said in a statement. </p><p>"The Museum's conduct in this case begs the question: would the Museum of the Bible have racially profiled Jesus?" Here's what it's like to visit.</a></em></p><h2>A 'Kafkaesque ordeal'</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/595e5056a3630f1d008b7bc7-1259/screen shot 2017-07-06 at 103945 am.png" border="0" alt="Museum of the Bible" data-mce-source="Museum of the Bible" /><p class="source"><span>Museum of the Bible</span></p><p class="caption">The Museum of the Bible.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>At the center of the lawsuit is Hetta's visit to the Museum of the Bible on January 20, 2018. </p><p>In the complaint, Hetta claims officers interrupted him as he was socializing with his church group and brought him to a different room. The officers allegedly questioned why Hetta had been sitting alone on a bench earlier in the day. Hetta says he told them he was waiting for a friend, who did not have a cell phone and was running late.</p><p>According to the filing, officers further questioned Hetta - who is a <span>Coptic Christian -</span> <a href="https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/who-are-egypts-coptic-christians-and-what-do-they-believe_us_58ebc537e4b0c89f912058d5">about his church's denomination and whether it was "Christian."</a> A plainclothes officer told Hetta he was "suspicious because of where he was sitting," on a bench near the museum entrance, the filing states.</p><p>"Without prompting, [a different security officer] blurted out that they were 'not racially profiling' him," reads the filing. </p><p>After 20 to 25 minutes, Hetta says, he was allowed to leave and return to his church group meet-up. The next day, he reported the incident as discrimination in public accommodation to the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division. </p><p>Meanwhile, the Museum of the Bible continued to investigate Hetta, including reviewing his social media profiles, creating a dossier on him, and alerting the FBI, the court filing states. </p><p>"The Museum falsely advised the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) that Mr. Hetta was a possible terrorist, security and/or criminal threat," reads the complaint. "The Federal Bureau of investigation then opened a counterterrorism investigation into Plaintiff Hetta." </p><p>The complaint states that the FBI questioned Hetta's housemate and landlord and visited his residence. Hetta says in the court filing that he met with an FBI agent who stated he was "looking into concerns that the Museum of the Bible had asserted about Mr. Hetta related to terrorism." According to Hetta, the agent told him that the Museum of the Bible advised that Hetta might be a terrorist because of, among other reasons, his legal names: Hetta and Melek. </p><p>The lawsuit alleges that the Museum of the Bible, as well as employees who interacted with Hetta, violated federal civil-rights laws and the Fourth Amendment.
