As <keyword id="1464841" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="edtech" source="Orion">edtech</keyword> platforms continue to lay off employees in India, US-based celebrity-driven learning provider <keyword id="2128865" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="masterclass" source="Orion">MasterClass</keyword> has announced it is reducing its workforce by 20 per cent. MasterClass CEO <keyword id="14267852" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="David-Rogier" source="Orion">David Rogier</keyword> said the decision was taken to "adapt to the worsening macro environment and get to self sustainability faster". The layoff impacts nearly 120 people across all teams from its 600-strong workforce. "It was the most difficult decision I've had to make since we launched 7 years ago, because our team poured their heart and soul into MasterClass. They are some of the most creative, curious, caring and dedicated people in the world," Rogier tweeted late on Wednesday. He said that this very tough step will "strengthen our position both financially and strategically, allowing us to serve our members, employees and instructors for many years to come". The edtech company, which was last valued at $2.75 billion, has pledged to provide healthcare to affected employees through the end of the year, reports <keyword id="179988" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="TechCrunch" source="Orion">TechCrunch</keyword>. MasterClass made remote education with aspirational content (entertainment) available from celebrities such as Serena Williams and Issa Rae. MasterClass raised more than $460 million from investors including IVP, NEA and Owl Ventures. Even former Chess World Champion Garry Kasparov launched a "MasterClass for chess lovers" platform. MasterClass charges a $180 annual subscription fee for people to access its library of content. In India, edtech platforms have laid off more than 3,600 employees to date. Overall, nearly 10,000 workers have lost their jobs in the Indian startup ecosystem in the last 2-3 months. Edtech platform MasterClass fires 20% of its employees

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Most online classes are taught by professors who are taking an offline curriculum&#xa0;and bringing it online so it's more accessible."What's happening in most online classes is you're taking a physical class and putting a webcam in the back of the room," said MasterClass cofounder David Rogier.&#xa0;Rogier and his cofounder Aaron Rasmussen decided to build the opposite: classes taught by masters of a profession, designed for online first.On its roster of teachers are names like tennis star Serena Williams, actor Dustin Hoffman, and writer James Patterson.Starting Tuesday, <a href="https://www.masterclass.com/">MasterClass&#xa0;is adding classes</a>&#xa0;from actor Kevin Spacey and singer Christina Aguilera to its course offerings."If you've done well in business, it's your obligation to send the elevator back down," Spacey says <a href="&lt;iframe%20width=%22640%22%20height=%22360%22%20src=%22https://www.youtube.com/embed/8eQ0FKRIHyI?rel=0%22%20frameborder=%220%22%20allowfullscreen>&lt;/iframe>">in a trailer for the course</a>.&#xa0;<div></div>Unlike a typical syllabus, Each class&#xa0;contains 10 to 25&#xa0;chapters with interactive activities, with each chapter taking around 12 minutes of time. These aren't just click a button quizzes passing as activities, either.&#xa0;In James Patterson's writing course, students edit the first draft of one of his novels and compare it to the final one. In Serena William's course, students can upload photos of their swings and have other students give them feedback.&#xa0;For Christina Aguilera's course, the company built a range finder that works by tapping into a computer's microphone and measuring an artist's vocal range. Aguilera dedicates a whole chapter on improving it, so students can keep using the tool as they go, Rasmussen said.The courses are designed to not feel like a classroom lecture, but more like a workshop that you would normally pay to attend from a star anyways.Rasmussen and Rogier reject the workshop comparison a little bit, since it's not a one-time deal. Compared to a workshop that might last a few hours or days, the MasterClass materials are yours to re-watch, re-work, and continue learning from even after you finish, the founders say.Each class costs $90, so it's pricier than many of the free classes offered online.&#xa0;The startup also makes no pretenses that the celebrities it works with are the ones who are editing assignments or watching the acting videos. Instead, Rasmussen and Rogier have seen MasterClass students latch onto the peer review process - a Dustin Hoffman's MasterClass acting fan club has already sprung up in LA for instance.&#xa0;The company does split the revenue with the master instructing the class, but it's largely a&#xa0;labor of love and a passion to teach what they've learned that motivates its lecturers, Rogier says.&#xa0;Since each class takes weeks, if not months, to produce, the company has raised more money to help accelerate its pipeline and bring more masters on board.&#xa0;MasterClass plans to announce Tuesday a new $15 million round of funding led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA). So did David Rogier.
But he kept striking out with the companies he wanted to work for.
Finally, his advisor told him: Go have lunch with a guy named Tristan Walker and find out how he got his career going.
Walker is currently an entrepreneur in residence at Andreessen Horowitz. He made his name as the first business development guy for Foursquare.
<a href="https://medium.com/better-humans/5ae6fb285d1">In a blog post</a>, Rogier tells the story of how Walker got that job. It wasn't easy.
Tristan wanted to work at the hottest start up in the Valley?-?Foursquare (it was 2009).
He applied on Foursquare's website.
No response.
Tristan found the CEOs email address on the website and sent him a note.
No response.
Tristan emailed him again.
No response.
Tristan emailed him again.
No response.
Tristan emailed him again.
(I have chutzpah, but I would have stopped at the fourth email)
Tristan didn't and emailed him again.
No response.
Tristan emailed him 3 more times. No response.
So what did Tristan do? He started working for them. He wanted a job in business development, so he started doing business development. He called up companies said he was a student and asked if they would be interested in advertising on Foursquare (remember, Tristan did not actually work for Foursquare). He had to explain what Foursquare was?-?but, miraculously, a few companies said yes.
Tristan then emailed the Foursquare CEO a 9th time and said?-?I've lined up a few advertisers for you.
This time, the CEO replied. They met the next day. Tristan went on to run Business Development at Foursquare.
Rogier now works for IDEO, the design consultancy. He says he learned a lot from eating lunch with Walker, including the idea that your job application should actually emphasize the areas you'll be perceived as weak.
He writes:
 "Before I applied to IDEO (the revolutionary product design consultancy), I asked a former IDEO employee (the wonderful Emily Ma) what IDEO would perceive as my biggest weakness. Her answer: are you actually creative? I didn't have a portfolio and I came from supply chain. Instead of filling out their application, I decided to make a book. I spent 10 hours in 4 different airport baggage claims, interviewed 23 people and put together a book on Snapfish about how I would improve baggage claims (the book). I got the internship."
