Petraeus, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cia-director-david-petraeus-resigns-2012-11">who resigned from the top post at the CIA over an extramarital affair last year</a>, is now the chairman of the newly created KKR Global Institute.

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts &amp; Co. L.P. today announced the appointment of retired four-star General and former Director of the CIA David Petraeus as Chairman of the newly created KKR Global Institute.
<a href="http://www.kkr.com/leadership/henry-r-kravis">Henry Kravis</a>, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of KKR, stated: "I have long known and respected General Petraeus and, on behalf of everyone at KKR, I welcome him to the firm. In recent months, General Petraeus has focused his efforts on supporting returning veterans as they transition to the workforce. Among such endeavors, he currently serves on the advisory council of American Corporate Partners, an organization that connects veterans to business leaders. In addition, he will lead a seminar as a visiting professor at the City University of New York's Macaulay Honors College and he is a member of the University of Southern California faculty. As a Judge Wid ney Professor at the University of Southern California, he will lecture part time and also mentor members of the school's Reserve Officers Training Corps program and young veterans.
General Petraeus holds a PhD in international relations from Princeton University and has taught economics and international relations at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He also completed a fellowship at Georgetown University's Institute for the Study of Diplomacy.
About General David H. Petraeus
David Howell Petraeus is a retired American military officer and former government official. In June 2011, the U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed him as director of the CIA, a role he held from September 2011 until November 2012. Prior to assuming the directorship of the CIA, he was a highly decorated four-star general, serving more than 37 years in the U.S. Army before retiring in August 2011.
A lauded combat leader and strategist, General Petraeus was instrumental in reshaping American military doctrine through his focus on the concepts of a comprehensive civil-military counterinsurgency campaign.
General Petraeus' final assignment in the military was as commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force and U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Other four-star assignments included his service as the 10th commander of the U.S. Central Command, where he was responsible for military operations in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq, the Levant and Egypt, and his service as commanding general of the Multi-National Force—Iraq for more than 19 months.
In the latter position, he commanded all coalition forces in Iraq throughout the surge in 2007 and 2008 when violence in that country was reduced by nearly 90 percent. During that tour in Iraq, he oversaw the implementation of the concepts in the Army/Marine Corps counterinsurgency manual that was drafted under his direction during his assignment as commander of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, between his second and third tours in Iraq.
Previously, General Petraeus was the first commander of the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq and the NATO Training Mission—Iraq. Prior to those assignments, he was commanding general of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), leading the 101st into Iraq in 2003 during the fight to Baghdad and the first year in Iraq, when his division distinguished itself in the conduct of a comprehensive counterinsurgency campaign.
Following General Petraeus' extensive service in the Middle East, former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates praised him for the critical and historic role he played in dramatically reducing the violence in Iraq and haling the Taliban's momentum in Afghanistan, writing that he had "changed the course of two wars, an unprecedented accomplishment." Earlier in General Petraeus' career, he also served in Europe, Bosnia, Central America, Haiti, Kuwait and the United States.
General Petraeus earned a bachelor's degree from the United States Military Academy, from which he graduated in 1974 as a distinguished cadet, finishing in the top 5 percent of his class. He later received the General George C. Marshall Award as the top graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College class of 1983. He subsequently earned an MPA and a PhD in international relations from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He served as assistant professor of international relations at the U.S. Military Academy and also completed a fellowship at Georgetown University's Institute for the Study of Diplomacy.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus Joins Private Equity Giant KKR

<div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIbl28O99Lg">YouTube screenshot</a></div></div>It's hard to believe that former Army General and top CIA spook David Petraeus, a brilliant military tactician and architect of counterinsurgency operations, didn't see it coming - an unruly band of <keyword id="6360288" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="college">college</keyword> kids waiting for him to walk to his seminar so they could shout such astute, nuanced criticisms as "scumbag," "war criminal," and "disgusting imperialist."
Nonetheless, it happened in public, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cuny-students-harass-david-petraeus-2013-9">and it happened on film</a>. 
So CUNY, the college that has employed him for a single dollar to teach a seminar this fall, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MacaulayatCUNY/posts/10151865170804063">released a statement via Facebook</a>.
It reads:
Statement from Dean Ann Kirschner: "Our university is a place where complex issues and points of view across the political and cultural spectrum are considered and debated in the hopes that we might offer solutions to the problems in our world. In order to advance reasoned debate on such issues, it is important that multiple points of view be heard. 
Great universities strive to connect their <keyword id="3216" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="students">students</keyword> with remarkable leaders and thinkers so students can examine a variety of ideas, debate them, and form their own opinions. Those perspectives find expression through discussion in and out of the classroom. 
We may disagree, but we must always do so in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding. While the college supports the articulation of all points of view on critical issues, it is essential that dialogue within the academic setting always be conducted civilly."
Surprisingly, despite having come under fire for hiring the retired General - having to not just once, but twice reduce his salary, starting at $200,000 and ending at one dollar - neither CUNY nor Patraeus seemed to expect a student body <keyword id="6359715" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="protest">protest</keyword> in arguably one of the most liberal cities in the Union.

Kieren Lalor of The Daily News writes, "Celebrity hires like Petraeus may be fun at administration cocktail parties, they don't fit with the mission of a public university."

CUNY Releases Statement On Students Berating Petraeus

Immediately following the Benghazi crisis, U.S. media did its due diligence and flexed its sources, anonymous and otherwise, to uncover the truth about the attack - but then they purposely failed to report the details because of requests from the CIA and the Obama administration.
Michael Calderon <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/02/benghazi-media-news-cia-request_n_2066651.html">of The Huffington Post reports</a> that the AP, The New York Times and The Washington Post all withheld information at the behest of the CIA. Calderon also details how other news outlets failed to mention the true ties of CIA contractors Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods.
From his report:
ABC News, for example, <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/glen-doherty-navy-seal-killed-libya-intel-mission/story?id=17229037#.UJPhq4UmndA" target="_hplink">reported</a> that Doherty had been working to "round up dangerous weapons" in the country. One national security reporter told The Huffington Post that it was an "open secret" in national security circles that the former SEALs were working for the CIA.
The AP even went so far as to edit a Sept. 21 story it wrote, which revealed the employment status of Woods and Doherty; ensuring the edited version made no mention of Woods and Doherty's employment the CIA.
A statement written to HuffPo from AP spokesman Paul Colford:
"We omitted mention of the two former SEALs' CIA connection in subsequent versions of the story after CIA officials insisted that other lives would be endangered."
Another statement, from the New York Times, echoed this sentiment: "[We] agreed to withhold locations and details of these operations at the request of Obama administration officials, who said that disclosing such information could jeopardize future sensitive government activities and put at risk American personnel working in dangerous settings."
Assuming they knew exactly how disclosing such information would put people in danger is one thing, maybe some of the operations were ongoing. But if they weren't exactly sure, if they just suppressed coverage on behalf of a basic request, then they're sacrificing journalistic integrity in order to be complicit in the cover-up of botched covert operations.
A far cry from <a href="http://www.archives.gov/research/pentagon-papers/">printing the Pentagon Papers 60 years ago</a> exposing the administration during the Vietnam War, the media is largely in cahoots with today's higher-up government officials. Unlike the Pentagon Papers, the Benghazi coverage shows how the CIA suppressed media reporting under a blanket "national security" statement.
CNN <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/sep/04/cnn-international-documentary-bahrain-arab-spring-repression">even fired one of its up-and-coming investigative reporters</a> because of fallout from a documentary she produced about unrest in Bahrain during the Arab Spring, something neither the Bahrain government <a href="http://www.stripes.com/with-bahrain-home-to-5th-fleet-us-faces-dilemma-over-crackdown-on-protests-1.168370">nor the U.S. military</a> wanted <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2011/09/obamas-un-address-and-the-bahrain-exception/245467/">publicized</a>.
Most recently, this cozy relationship with the administration is typified by the David Petraeus sex scandal.
The CIA and the "Intelligence Community" are <a href="http://www.unhcr.org/refworld/publisher,CPJ,,USA,47c567c020,0.html">officially not supposed to have working journalists on the payroll</a>, but where are the rules for book authors? The case of Paula Broadwell, a writer tasked with the portrayal of the most powerful spook in the U.S., <a href="http://mhpbooks.com/the-ethics-of-biography-paula-broadwell-edition/">shows an obvious blurring of professional lines and a blatant disregard for conflicts of interest</a>.
An attempt to be as impartial as possible would have looked like this: leaving duty as an intelligence officer with the <keyword id="6359526" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Military">military</keyword> and rendering her Top Secret clearance inactive.
She did neither and remained <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/nov/10/david-petraeus-us-military">very much on the intel community payroll</a> as an Army reservist while she was <a href="http://www.us.penguingroup.com/nf/Book/BookDisplay/0,,9781594203183,00.html">contracted through a private publishing company</a> to write a biography of General David Petraeus (Ret.). With so many ethical lines already blurred, the pair added one more and began a sexual affair.
Then word got out about that relationship.
The following flurry of hasty reporting about Petraeus exposed an easily charmed media that had eaten up the general's charisma and blindly endorsed almost every platform he put forward, regardless of whatever facts might have been on the ground at the time. 
Michael Hastings, the former Rolling Stone writer who reported former General Stanley McCrystal out of a job, had this to say about the situation:
Petraeus' first biographer, former U.S. News and World Report reporter Linda Robinson, wrote a book about him, then went to CENTCOM to work for him. Yes - a so-called journalist published a book about him, then started getting a paycheck from him soon after. This went largely unremarked upon.
Another huge supporter was Tom Ricks, a former Washington Post journalist who found a second career as unofficial press agent for the general and his friends. Ricks is the ringleader of what I like to call "the media-military industrial complex," setting the standard for its incestuous everyday corruption. He not only built Dave up, he facilitated the disastrous liaison between Broadwell and Petraeus. Ricks helped get Broadwell a literary agent, a six-figure book deal, and a publisher.
Some <a href="http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2012/11/petraeus-cult-2/">journalists even came out and said</a> they'd taken the bait, like Danger Room's Spencer Ackerman, who wrote, "When it came out that CIA Director David Petraeus had an affair with his hagiographer, I got punked."

Like many in the press, nearly every national politician, and lots of members of Petraeus' brain trust over the years, I played a role in the creation of the legend around David Petraeus. The biggest irony surrounding Petraeus' unexpected downfall is that he became a casualty of the very publicity machine he cultivated to portray him as superhuman. Whether it's withholding information, even deleting previously reported information (like the AP did) at a government's request, or intentionally propagating a less than accurate portrayal of American leaders, these transgressions have exposed a media that's not as free as it publicizes itself to be.

Aramco is due to go public next month, with <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/saudi-aramco-ipo-process-kicks-off-nov-3-trading-starts-on-dec-11-2019-10-1028638678">state reports suggesting it could be December 11</a>, though this isn't yet confirmed. Recently it released its prospectus, where after the oil attacks in September, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-aramco-prospectus-details-6-risks-before-record-breaking-ipo-2019-11">further attacks were highlighted as a risk to Aramco's success. </a>Bloomberg reported that a variety of bank valuations gave the oil-giant a wide range, roughly between<a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/the-saudi-aramco-ipo-may-miss-its-2-trillion-valuation-target-by-more-than-700-billion-1028654648">$1.2 trillion and $2.2 trillion</a> - state officials are seeking $2 trillion. The ex-CIA chief said that his firm put $2 billion into the UAE and was now looking at other places to invest. "We are looking elsewhere in the region," he said adding, "But as we do that we evaluate not just the financial aspects of the deal but also the geopolitical and security risks, the macroeconomic situation and the environmental, social and governance issues.""You have to have confidence in the rule of law. Saudi Arabia is 'running out of money' and needs the Aramco IPO cash, ex-CIA director says

<keyword id="1447165" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Paula-Broadwell">Paula Broadwell</keyword>, the woman at the heart of the scandal that led to Army Gen. David Petraeus resigning as <keyword id="44293" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="CIA">CIA</keyword> Director, attended a prayer breakfast this week.
The news came within a week of the announcement that her one-time extra-marital partner Petraeus <a href="http://www.usnews.com/news/newsgram/articles/2013/04/24/professor-david-petraeus-debuting-at-cuny">would be a visiting professor</a> at City University of New York.
Kevin Cirrili of Politico <a href="http://www.politico.com/story/2013/05/paula-broadwell-speaks-out-90820.html#.UYFDardCPyU.twitter">reports that</a> a local Charlotte news affiliate talked to Broadwell at the breakfast.
“I grew up in a strong faith-based family,” she said to <a href="http://charlotte.news14.com/content/top_stories/693527/redemption-is-the-message-as-broadwell-attends-ymca-prayer-breakfast">News 14 Carolina</a>. “I think I have selected to return to those roots for strength, for my family, for myself and to protect our children and to forgive others and move on and face forward.”
Broadwell and Patraeus were caught in a highly publicized affair late last year that led to the general's resignation as head of the CIA. Both were married at the time.

Former Petraeus Mistress Looking Towards Christian Faith

The Harvard graduate first began working on his software company, Mark43, in 2012 when he was given a class project to work with the Massachusetts state police department. During the project, he had to figure out how to use data and software to help the Massachusetts state police fight gang-related crime. "We really fell in love with the idea of helping police, of helping out our communities by helping our first responders," Crouch told Business Insider. "We saw how terrible their systems were and decided to really turn it on its head."Crouch comes from a family of police officers, so spinning the project out into a full-fledged company was a "mission-driven project." As he began making progress on the idea, he was approached by one of the largest police forces in the country: the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. Mark43 didn't have a full product at that point, so the company committed to building it in tandem with the D.C. police. "A lot of it had to do with their chief [at the time]," Crouch said. "She was a really bold thinker when she was police chief in D.C. and she kind of pioneered the idea. Her attitude to it was, 'What do we have to lose?'"Despite coming from a family of police officers, however, Crouch didn't know the ins and outs of an officer's job. So the company's founders - Crouch, Florian Mayr, and Matthew Polega - spent hours on ridealongs in Southeast D.C. "The only way to figure out how they do their job, what an arrest was like, was to actually sit in the cars with them and go on patrol," Crouch said. "We had to literally do everything with them and figure out how it's working on the street." <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Mark43Here's what Mark43's software looks like for the officers who use it.</div></div></div>Mark43's software is aimed at addressing two main problems with the system most police forces currently use: poor usability and slow speeds. Mark43 offers a cloud-based system that police officers can access on a tablet and use to do everything from arrest reports to investigations to data sharing and analysis.The software that most police currently use was designed in the 90s and hasn't been overhauled since, Crouch says. "They were taking an hour to do things that really should have taken 30-45 minutes," Crouch said. "They couldn't share data because these systems were on-premise, in basements, in servers, rather than actually having free-flowing access of information between departments."Now, Mark43's system has been deployed in police forces around the country, including six in Los Angeles County and several in the Pacific Northwest. The company has raised $41 million from venture capital firms like Spark Capital and General Catalyst, as well as from more diverse investors like Ashton Kutcher, David Patraeus, and actress Sophia Bush, who stars in NBC police drama "Chicago P.D."Mark43 has offices in New York, Toronto, and D.C., and plans to open up a West Coast office early in 2017. Next, the company is setting its sights on becoming the operating system for all local and state governments, and plans to build a new 911 system for police and fire departments.
