Only days ago, the search giant-turned-Android leader and hardware visionary acquired <keyword id="6473223" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bump">Bump</keyword>, a wireless <keyword id="392488" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Data-sharing">data sharing</keyword> firm that does it all on the <keyword id="49933" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cloud">Cloud</keyword>. For data sharing, all you need is the Bump app running on Apple or <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> phones and a good Internet connection. Just bump the two devices (between whom data would be shared) and you can share pictures, videos, contacts, documents, apps and more. Interestingly, Bump also launched a special photo-sharing app called Flock back in 2011. 
 All these may sound a bit futuristic but it is quite simple, really. It is just that the phones’ sensors can feel the ‘bump’ and recognise your need for data sharing with the other device. So it starts happening on the Cloud and the other phone gets the required information without the least hassle. You need not switch on your Bluetooth either. And here’s the best part – Bump even supports data sharing between <keyword id="6365259" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="PC">PC</keyword> and mobile. Does it mean the data cable will be a thing of the past very soon? 
 In a blog post, Bump’s CEO and founder <keyword id="1869864" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="David-Lieb">David Lieb</keyword> says they are excited to join Google. The <keyword id="6404679" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="start-up">start-up</keyword> has done some good work since 2009 when it was launched. Halfway through 2013, the company claims to have 125 million downloads and 1 billion photos transferred. 
 
So what does Google intend to do with its latest acquisition? It is an interesting innovation in terms of wireless data transfer across devices. So don’t be surprised if the Android world adopts it large scale in the near future (pushed by Google, of course).

Literally. Trump <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-struggles-stay-awake-sleeping-criminal-trial-2024-4">appeared to nod off</a> in court. Meanwhile, keeping jurors on the case <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-hush-money-trial-juror-worried-identity-being-revealed-2024-4">became a bit of a problem</a> before <a target="_blank" href="https://businessinsider.com/jurors-seated-donald-trump-trial-manattan-trial-who-are-they-2024-4/">12 were ultimately chosen</a> yesterday.We did get a preview of Trump's potential defense: "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-into-defense-jury-selection-hush-money-trial-2024-4">Some accountant</a>" handled the paperwork he's on trial for, Trump told reporters. And there have been some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-hush-money-trial-courtroom-sketch-artists-2024-4">great courtroom sketches</a>.However, things are set to heat up in the coming weeks.The trial is focused on 34 felonies alleging the Trump Organization's business records were falsified to hide other crimes. That might not seem spicy. But prosecutors say some books were cooked, in part, to hide a hush-money payment to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-stormy-daniels-porn-star-affair-donald-trump-2018-1">porn star Stormy Daniels</a>.That means Daniels will eventually take the stand and likely testify that she had sex with Trump in 2006.How Trump, who has steadfastly denied there was a sexual encounter, reacts will be interesting to see. The former president has previously been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-heckling-e-jean-carroll-defamation-trial-judge-warning-2024-1">reprimanded for his courtroom outbursts</a>.<div type="image" title="Donald Trump" height="1334" width="2000" msid="109436279" hostid="261" sizebytes="115290"></div>The trial is expected to take about six weeks, wrapping up in late May or early June.Trump's legal team still has appeals underway regarding the case. From a legal perspective, this would be the least complicated. But a win in the hush-money trial doesn't mean Trump is out of the woods. He faces <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/full-text-all-4-indictments-against-former-president-donald-trump-2023-8">three other criminal trials</a> related to the 2020 election and the holding of classified documents, all of which are still in the indictment stage.Trump is found guilty on some or all charges. Here's where things get tricky.Trump will almost certainly appeal the conviction. In the meantime, there is nothing in the Constitution preventing a convicted felon from running for president. In fact, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-indictment-could-run-for-president-2-others-did-2023-3">it's happened before</a>, but both candidates were longshots.Still, Trump might not be able to vote for himself come November. Trump's hush-money trial is set to heat up

Both worked on the <keyword id="6354530" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="music">music</keyword> for the 1998 animated movie.</li><li>The song was pitched for the live-action "<keyword id="3026859" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mulan">Mulan</keyword>," but <keyword id="46161" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Disney">Disney</keyword> passed on it.</li><li>The two decided to finish the song anyway and release it independently for fans.</li><li>Insider spoke with Wilder and Zippel about the new version of the song and how they received Disney's blessing to move forward with it.</li></ul>Disney's live-action "<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/mulan">Mulan</a>" does away with most of the popular songs from the animated movie, minus a few nods here and there. When Disney passed on it, the composer and lyricist of the original animated movie decided to finish making the song anyway and release it independently of the studio. Both he and "Mulan" composer Matthew Wilder were brought back for the live-action movie to try and find a way to <a href="https://www.insider.com/live-action-mulan-considered-music-montage-reflection">work some of the original music naturally into the 2020 film</a>."We were really excited about it and we pitched it and I think that the music people at Disney share our enthusiasm, but, ultimately, it doesn't really fit the tone of the picture," Zippel said of pitching a new "I'll Make a Man Out of You" for the new film, which is more grounded in action. "That was their decision. After seeing the picture, I understand that completely."The two knew how popular the song was and how much it meant to fans so they decided to complete it and release it as a tribute to the new film.<h2>Disney gave its blessing for the song to be released</h2><div type="image" title="matthew wilder 2020" height="1692" width="2250" msid="78287436" hostid="261"></div>"We went to great lengths to run it up the flag pole," Wilder said. "We're all friendly with the people over there and [president of music and soundtracks for The Walt Disney Studios] Mitchell Lieb was very sympathetic.""He loved the piece and went to bat for us when word came down from on high that they didn't want to use it for the film," Wilder added.Zippel said Disney told them they could do it regardless because anyone can create a cover version of a song. Their version of "I'll Make a Man Out of You" is released independently. "But we didn't want to make them angry. We want to support them," Zippel said. "They said, it's OK. So we're glad to have their blessing because we really didn't want to go to war with our friends and our movie."<h2>What's different about this all-female version of 'I'll Make a Man Out of You'</h2><div type="image" title="ill make a man out of you female version" height="1504" width="2826" msid="78287438" hostid="261"></div>Wilder and Zippel wanted to keep the spirit of the original song but update it with more of a woman's point of view. So you'll notice a few lyric changes.For instance, it didn't make sense to mention the Huns, the villains of the animated movie.Instead of, "Let's get down to business to defeat the Huns. Did they send me daughters, when I asked for sons?" the new lyrics are "Let's get down to business. Better listen good. Don't have time for being misunderstood."Nayana Holley, Toni Scruggs, and Kara Britz sing the new version of the song. Scruggs recently worked with Wilder on an animated short, "<a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9307284/">The Pig on the Hill.</a>""We were thrilled with the way it turned out," Zippel said. "It was just an idea that I threw at Matt. I had no idea what he was going to do with that or how he would reinterpret it, but it's so much fun. We just thought it, let's put it out there and see if the world embraces it."

It knows what your dog looks like, when and where you last ate pizza, and can automatically pull all of the photos of your 9-year-old niece from the time she was first born up until her most recent birthday into a neat album. Google is hoping this new Photos app becomes the single digital hub for all of your memories, and it seeks to differentiate itself from rivals like Apple and Dropbox in two ways: by making your photos just as searchable as an email in Gmail or a link on the web, and by offering free unlimited storage for photos that are 16-megapixels in size and under."We kind of decided about a year ago that we wanted to rebuild things from the ground up," David Lieb, the product lead for Google Photos, told Business Insider. <h2>An app that gets smarter the more you use it</h2>Google uses machine learning to power the scary-accurate image recognition within the Photos app, and based on the demo I've seen, it's incredibly fast and accurate. Other services let you search photos based on when they were taken, where they were taken, and how you've tagged them.But with Photos, you can simply type in the word "pizza," and any photos you've taken of pizza will pop up whether you've labeled the pictures or not. If you went rock climbing last summer, you can type in the phrase "rock climbing" to find those images. Google also automatically sorts photos based on these types of phrases in the Categories section. So, all of the photos of any given person will appear in one organized album, all photos of food would be in another, etc. Google already uses machine learning - a term that refers to a type of algorithm that learns on its own without human intervention - for many of its products, including Google Now, Google Maps, and Search. But now we're seeing it being applied to photo storage.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image"><a title_source="Lisa Eadicicco" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/556de0f3eab8ea8a2e3daf58-960/googlephotossearch.jpg"></a>Lisa Eadicicco</div></div></div>There were two aspects that Google focused on the most when developing the new Photos app: making sure you can search using broad words and phrases that feel natural rather than keywords, and making sure the app is easy to use. "The design of the app is probably the thing that spent the most time iterating and getting right," Lieb said. To decide which features should be included in the app, Google brought in outside testers to determine what would resonate with actual users - a common tactic in most product development. Google also spent time testing paper prototypes of the app for months to get the design right. Google initially tested a layout that was similar to the Gallery app on Android phones - it would show you the folders on your phone like, Camera, Downloads, etc. But testers didn't seem to be into that layout - 98% of them would just click the Camera category and ignore the other ones, Lieb said."So we decided to show all of those photos in a single view so the user doesn't have to decide," he said.But, layout aside, it's really Google's advanced machine learning technology that powers the app. "At Google I/O, you heard Sundar (Google's SVP of product) talk on stage about how Google has been making machine learning investments for decades now," Lieb said. "So we do actually have the best capability in the machine learning realm. Google is to shut down smartphone file-sharing app Bump at the end of the month just four months after buying it.
The US search giant bought the Bump Technologies start-up behind the app for a deal reportedly worth between $30m and $60m.
Google will also close location app Flock.
"We are now deeply focused on our new projects within Google, and we've decided to discontinue Bump and Flock," Bump co-founder and chief executive David Lieb wrote in a blog post.
On January 31, Bump and Flock will be removed from both the App Store and Google Play, after which neither app will work and all user data will be deleted.
Over the coming weeks, users can export their data by opening either app and following instructions. They will then receive an email with a link containing their photos, videos, contacts and other data.
Mr Lieb thanked users for their feedback, enthusiasm and support over the years, saying it "brought much meaning to our work".
"In many ways, Bump was a revolutionary product that inspired many subsequent advances and helped push the world forward," Mr Lieb wrote. "We hope our new creations at Google will do the same."

Flock software taps into smartphone location-sensing technology to note when friends are in proximity of one another and lets them contribute to sets of photos reflecting shared experiences such as a concerts or sporting events.

Google Shuts Down Bump After Buying It For At Least $30 Million

(AP) - Darren Wilson, the Ferguson police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black teenager in August, <a href="http://edition.cnn.com/2014/11/21/us/ferguson-grand-jury-ruling/index.html">is in talks with officials to resign</a>, CNN reports.
The negotiations come at the same time that a grand jury, which has been investigating the case for several months, is expected to decide whether or not to indict him. 
Wilson seems confident that he will not face criminal charges from a grand jury, a police union official said Thursday.
Meanwhile, The Washington Post reports that Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson said on Thursday that <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/officer-in-ferguson-shooting-unlikely-to-return-to-job-police-chief-says/2014/11/21/65a2e0e0-7139-11e4-ad12-3734c461eab6_story.html">Wilson is unlikely to return to his job regardless of whether a grand jury decides to indict him</a>. 
Wilson has been on paid administrative leave since the shooting.
Jeff Roorda, business manager for the St. Louis Police Officers' Association, said he met Thursday with the St. Louis police officer, who has remained secluded from the public eye since the Aug. 9 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown that sparked tense and occasionally violent protests and drew national attention.
Wilson has been under a lot of pressure and stress but appeared confident in the outcome of the grand jury investigation, Roorda said.
"It's fair to say that neither he nor his defense team expect an indictment," Roorda said, offering his impression of the situation based on the meeting with Wilson.
Roorda later told the AP in a text message that he was only speaking for himself.
"Wilson seems confident that justice will be served, but neither he nor his attorneys shared any expectations with me," he said in the text.
One of Wilson's attorneys, who also attended Thursday's meeting, said there was no specific discussion of expectations.
"We have absolutely no idea - no more than anyone else - what may or may not happen," attorney Neil Bruntrager said. "The only expectation that we would have is that the grand jury would be thorough and fair."
If he is indicted, Wilson will immediately turn himself in to authorities, Bruntrager said.
A 12-person St. Louis County grand jury has been hearing evidence in the case as it weighs whether to issue charges against the white officer for the black 18-year-old's death. A decision could come soon, though authorities have not publicized any specific date for an announcement.
Roorda said St. Louis city police have been notified that they are switching to 12-hour shifts starting Saturday, a preparation for a potential uptick in protests.
The St. Louis County Police Department has not yet decided whether to switch to longer work shifts, spokesman Brian Schellman said.
For weeks, local and state police have been preparing for a grand jury announcement in anticipation that it will result in renewed protests. Earlier this week, Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard to help with security.
Authorities have said Wilson shot Brown, who was unarmed, following some sort of physical confrontation that occurred after Wilson told Brown and a friend to stop walking down the center of a street.
Wilson told authorities that the shooting happened after Brown struggled with him for his gun, according to reports by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the New York Times that cited unnamed sources. But some witnesses have said Brown had his arms raised - as if to surrender - when the fatal shot was fired.
Riots and looting occurred a day after the shooting, and protesters filled the streets for weeks. Police responded by firing tear gas and smoke canisters into crowds of demonstrators after some people threw rocks and Molotov cocktails.
Protests have been nearly constant since the shooting. The vast majority of protesters want to see the officer charged with murder. Many are also pushing for changes in the way police and the courts interact with minorities. A handful of demonstrations have been in support of Wilson.
Benjamin Crump, a lawyer for Brown's family, described the investigation as an "emotional roller-coaster" for his clients. Even if Wilson is indicted, there's no guarantee of a conviction. And if he isn't charged, Crump said Thursday, "they get no chance of justice for their child."
Crump said he had no insight into the timing of the grand jury's decision, but that he expected to be notified ahead of any public announcement.
Wilson has incurred significant legal, medical and relocation expenses, and a police charity has raised close to $500,000 for him, Roorda said.

Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson Is In Talks To Resign Ahead Of Grand Jury Decision

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - The federal government <keyword id="6379139" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="shutdown">shutdown</keyword> that has idled hundreds of thousands of workers is starting to ripple through states, which are now laying off employees and warning of thousands of additional furloughs if the budget stalemate is not resolved soon.
The trickle-down effects highlight the extent to which states are dependent on the federal government. In many states, federal money comprises about a third of all revenues. As federal dollars dry up, so do state programs.
Across the nation, about a dozen states already have furloughed hundreds of employees whose paychecks depend on federal money. The layoffs have hit civilians at state National Guard bureaus, workplace safety inspectors and state workers who determine eligibility for Social Security disability benefits, among others.
More state employees could be furloughed this coming week.
"For me, it couldn't have come at a worse time," said Tammy Turner-Lee, a 54-year-old supervisor in Oklahoma's disability determination office who is targeted to be furloughed on Friday. "My husband is going through chemotherapy right now. ... If we are in furlough status, that means I am going to have to go into credit card debt."
Medicaid, the biggest federally funded state program, has remained exempt from the cutbacks. But federal officials have said other big state-administered programs - like food aid for low-income families - may have only enough money to make it through October.
As Congress and President Barack Obama remain at odds over the federal budget, some states have started to prepare for widespread furloughs.
Arkansas already has laid off 673 employees and could furlough an additional 4,000 if the federal shutdown continues for another week.
"The state of Arkansas simply does not have the resources to continue to cover the costs of federal programs," Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe wrote in a recent memo to agency directors.
Some states have avoided furloughs by tapping into accumulated federal funds while others are dipping into state coffers.
Maryland has continued to pay 11,000 employees because the Legislature set aside $100 million to plug holes created by federal budget battles. Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback dipped into cash reserves to avoid 119 furloughs and reinstate dozens of others in an office that handles unemployment benefits.
But Florida Gov. Rick Scott took the opposite approach, ordering agencies not to use state money to cover typical federal expenses.
Furloughs of state workers are slowly mounting. There have been 56 so far Maine, more than 100 in Illinois, 244 in Arizona, more than 300 in Virginia and over 400 in Washington.
The disability office in Oklahoma's Department of Rehabilitation Services, where Turner-Lee works, halted its outgoing mail to stretch its dwindling federal dollars. But furloughs could kick in by week's end for 289 full-time and 39 temporary state employees.
The Oklahoma shutdown would affect nearly 18,000 people waiting for word on whether they can get disability benefits.
The entire staff of the Maine disability determination office already has been furloughed, meaning people with disabilities "are going to incur additional financial hardship," said Sara Squires, the public affairs director at the nonprofit Disability Rights Center in Augusta, Maine.
Other states such as Pennsylvania, Missouri and Michigan still are bracing for a big hit from the federal shutdown.
About 200 maintenance employees of the Missouri National Guard already are furloughed, but the state has several thousand additional federally funded employees.
The key date in Michigan in Oct. 20. If nothing is resolved by then, state officials will begin reviewing which 15,000 to 20,000 employees to furlough.
"If we are still in the same position a week from now, we've got some very real problems and concerns," said Kurt Weiss, a spokesman for the Michigan budget office.
Furloughed federal workers could eventually get paid if Congress later approves retroactive wages. But state workers dependent on federal funds could face complications because of quirks in local laws or collective bargaining contracts.
In Minnesota, some 100 Department of Health workers have received notices warning they may be laid off. So have 67 employees of the Minnesota Department of Military Affairs.
Having been through a state government shutdown two summers ago, Chad Olson, lead electrician at an Air National Guard base in St. Paul, said he'd be inclined to look for a new job if he winds up on indefinite furlough again. "I can survive, but I don't want to put myself in a position where I can't survive," Olson said.
