But true to the <keyword id="1282628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood-tradition">Bollywood tradition</keyword>, the madcap entertainer <keyword id="57035" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="MTH">MTH</keyword>, starring David’s son <keyword id="4928" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Varun">Varun</keyword> and the sizzling female leads <keyword id="88540" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ileana-DCruz">Ileana D’Cruz</keyword> and <keyword id="611054" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nargis-Fakri">Nargis Fakri</keyword>, has topped the <keyword id="1812427" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office-chart">box office chart</keyword> this time. 
 
Main Tera Hero had an average start though, netting just Rs 6.6 crore at home on the opening Friday and recording 35-40% occupancy rate. But in spite of the cricket fever built around the India-Sri Lanka T20 World Cup final on Sunday, business picked up exceedingly well for the wild and whacky comedy flick and it netted a little over Rs 22 crore during the first weekend, as per industry estimates. It did moderately well on the crucial Day 4 (Monday, April 7) and collections at <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword> amounted to nearly Rs 4 crore, as per industry estimates. Although MTH is a <keyword id="87291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="big-budget-movie">big budget movie</keyword> and cost around Rs 40 crore, the money would be recovered soon, going by <keyword id="112481" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ticket-sales">ticket sales</keyword>. The movie is produced by Shobha Kapoor and <keyword id="6354597" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ekta-Kapoor">Ekta Kapoor</keyword> for Balaji Motion Pictures. 
 
MTH is <keyword id="383666" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Varun-Dhawan">Varun Dhawan</keyword>’s second appearance in Bollywood – after <keyword id="2188068" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Karan-Johar-directed">Karan Johar-directed</keyword> commercial success <keyword id="549195" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Student-of-the-Year">Student of the Year</keyword>, which also starred <keyword id="1320874" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sidharth-Malhotra">Sidharth Malhotra</keyword> and <keyword id="6354526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Alia-Bhatt">Alia Bhatt</keyword>. The movie raked in Rs 28-29 crore nett in the first weekend, considerably higher than what Main Tera Hero did in spite of some extensive <keyword id="2188097" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pre-release-hype">pre-release hype</keyword>. 
 Before we tell you what worked and didn’t work for this <keyword id="2188113" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="David-Dhawan-comedy">David Dhawan comedy</keyword>, let’s take a look at the <keyword id="2188098" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Box-office-performances">box office performances</keyword> of the other two releases. Purab Kohli-Tannishtha Chatterjee-Kirti Kulhari starrer Jal has a pertinent theme – it portrays the wild and water-starved <keyword id="80682" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rann-of-Kutch">Rann of Kutch</keyword> and its people locked in an eternal battle with their hostile surroundings. The movie has been criticised by many as a ‘festival’ flick while others vouch it is as commercial as can be. But either way, it has cut no ice with the domestic audience and reportedly grossed less than Rs 3 crore at home after the first weekend while fourth day collections stood at Rs 40-50 lakh. <keyword id="357845" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dar-Motion-Pictures">DAR Motion Pictures</keyword>, in collaboration with <keyword id="2188071" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="One-World-Films">One World Films</keyword>, released the movie across 385 screens, which means it is targeting a <keyword id="2188107" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Niche-audience">niche audience</keyword>. 
 
Ebn-E-Batuta, the third release of the week, also bombed the <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword>. The movie grossed some Rs 40-50 lakh on the first day, but the opening weekend numbers are yet to come in. Directed by <keyword id="2188109" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Varun-Middha">Varun Middha</keyword>, this one had an estimated budget of Rs 5 crore, but may follow the same fate as Jal. 
 
Coming back to Main Tera Hero, it is not difficult to understand what makes this movie so popular. This one provides a laughter riot – a mad concoction of romance, action and <keyword id="3769" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="David-Dhawan">David Dhawan</keyword>’s brand of none-too-subtle comedy. But the best thing to happen to us is the star son Varun Dhawan, lauded by most critics as the <keyword id="2188114" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Young-Govinda">Young Govinda</keyword>. It is a remake of the Telugu blockbuster <keyword id="471189" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kandireega">Kandireega</keyword> – telling the story of <keyword id="2180043" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sreenath-Prasad">Sreenath Prasad</keyword> or <keyword id="761791" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Seenu">Seenu</keyword> (Varun Dhawan). The problem kid comes to the big city to put his life in order, carries out his romantic escapades with two babes, <keyword id="2647" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sunaina">Sunaina</keyword> (Ileana D’Cruz) and <keyword id="173" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ayesha">Ayesha</keyword> (<keyword id="37518" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nargis-Fakhri">Nargis Fakhri</keyword>), gets into fisticuffs with Sunaina’s cop beau <keyword id="11572" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Angad">Angad</keyword> (<keyword id="34751" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arunoday-Singh">Arunoday Singh</keyword>) and gets entangled with Ayesha’s mafia dad <keyword id="19147" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="vikrant">Vikrant</keyword> (<keyword id="6533" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anupam-Kher">Anupam Kher</keyword>) and his gang. What follows is pure mayhem, but all things are sorted out well in the traditional Bollywood style and true lovers unite at the journey’s end. Quite a hilarious flick if you are ready to put logic away for some time and go with the Bollywood flow. 
 
 
 
In stark contrast, Jal portrays a reality as harsh as the arid land of Kutch. Here we have <keyword id="2188122" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bakka">Bakka</keyword> (<keyword id="26929" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="purab-kohli">Purab Kohli</keyword>), who has the power of divining water spots (does it remind you of <keyword id="6361516" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nana-Patekar">Nana Patekar</keyword> in Thodasa Roomani Ho Jaayen?), his sweetheart <keyword id="32289" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="kesar">Kesar</keyword> (<keyword id="2349" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="kirti">Kirti</keyword>) hailing from a rival village and <keyword id="719919" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="animal-activist">animal activist</keyword> <keyword id="1158" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kim">Kim</keyword> (Saidah Jules). Kim is out to save the <keyword id="2188125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Water-starved-flamingos">water-starved flamingos</keyword>, but not too interested to help the clan living there. Set against a stark yet magnificent backdrop, Jal had all the elements to become an epic tale of love and treachery, hope and hopelessness, apathy and ardour. Instead, viewers are handed out a simplistic story that fails to follow the stream of life (in other words, water) from the past into the future, the way it goes with human history. But the movie is worth the watch because of its <keyword id="2188126" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Offbeat-theme">offbeat theme</keyword> while Purab Kohli literally sets the screen on fire. 
 
Ebn-E-Batuta may remind you of <keyword id="47027" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="James-Cameron">James Cameron</keyword>’s <keyword id="44111" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Avatar">Avatar</keyword>, but there the similarities end. In this <keyword id="2188127" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-made-sci-fi-flick">India-made sci-fi flick</keyword>, the <keyword id="77929" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="aliens">aliens</keyword> have invaded <keyword id="976816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Planet-Earth">Planet Earth</keyword> to conquer it, but three <keyword id="343" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Friends">friends</keyword> (<keyword id="389953" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Omkar-Das-Manikpuri">Omkar Das Manikpuri</keyword>, <keyword id="2188128" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dev-Gohar">Dev Gohar</keyword> and <keyword id="2188131" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Satyendra-Khare">Satyendra Khare</keyword>) try and <keyword id="382268" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="leverage">leverage</keyword> the power of the <keyword id="2151868" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="extra-terrestrials">extra-terrestrials</keyword> for their own advancement. Some social issues and fun moments are also there, but this one hardly matches the Hollywood flicks in terms of special effects. Kids may still enjoy the movie but with <keyword id="1906261" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bhoothnath-Returns">Bhoothnath Returns</keyword> (starring <keyword id="6357912" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="amitabh-bachchan">Amitabh Bachchan</keyword>) hitting the theatres on April 11, Ebn-E-Batuta is not likely to enjoy much exposure at the box office during the second weekend.

Hero Tops The Chart But Jal Is Worth The Watch

To be the nation’s heartthrob and one of the most successful actors of <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword>, you either need to have a father or a Godfather; and <keyword id="383666" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Varun-Dhawan">Varun Dhawan</keyword> seems to have both. 
 
Other than that, he can also count good looks, a great physique, and some amazing dancing skills as his blessings, which is why he is the talk of the town today. 
 
Taking the nation by storm ever since his first movie Student Of The Year that released in the year 2010, Varun has established himself as one of the most promising actors in Bollywood, especially after his last release Badlapur in which he shed his chocolate-boy image and portrayed a 40-something man who wants nothing but revenge for his family. 
 
Even though Varun is the son of famous director David Dhawan who has given several hits to the Indian masses, Varun chose not to debut under his father, which is something unconventional. 
 Similarly, filmmaker <keyword id="3778" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Karan-Johar">Karan Johar</keyword>, who until SOTY, had never directed newcomers in his successful career spanning more than a decade, chose to do something unconventional and launch not one but a whole bunch of new talent in the industry with this movie. 
 
Out of this bunch, one was Varun Dhawan, who nailed the role of the unhappily rich Rohan Nanda, fighting with his own family to achieve his dream of being a musician. 
 
Ever since SOTY, the relationship between Karan and Varun has been that of a mentor-protégé one, and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, their second collaboration in two years proved the same. 
 
Three days back, Karan had declared that Varun would also be the lead in the much-awaited <keyword id="1581560" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shuddhi">Shuddhi</keyword>. Even though Varun tweeted a thank you to actor Salman Khan who congratulated him for bagging the role, he was yet to publicly thank Karan for this role. 
 
Well, looks like he was waiting for the perfect time to thank Karan for being his mentor, and what day could have been better than Karan’s birthday? 
 
Karan Johar, who turns 43 today, got a song dedicated to him straight from the music album of Varun’s upcoming movie ABCD2, and the song is aptly titled Happy Birthday.

Protégé Varun Raps It Up For Guru Karan

New Delhi, Actors <keyword id="19896580" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ranbir-kapoor" source="keywords">Ranbir Kapoor</keyword> and Alia Bhatt walked away top acting honours at the 69th <keyword id="20182352" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="filmfare" source="keywords">Filmfare</keyword> Awards for their roles in "Animal" and "Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani" while Vidhu Vinod Chopra's "" won the Black Lady for best film and director. The 69th Hyundai Filmfare Awards 2024 with Gujarat Tourism was held in GIFT City, Gujarat. The festival concluded on Sunday with an awards ceremony that was hosted by Karan Johar, Ayushmann Khurrana and Maneish Paul. Bhatt's co-star <keyword id="19978371" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shabana-azmi" source="keywords">Shabana Azmi</keyword> in "Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani" won best supporting actress award but film's lead star Ranveer Singh lost the trophy to <keyword id="19909122" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ranbir" source="keywords">Ranbir</keyword> Kapoor. "Jawan", however, won Filmfare for best VFX and action. "Animal", one of the most controversial but successful films of the year, not only won Ranbir a best actor trophy but bagged trophies for best music album, background score and best playback singer to Bhupinder Babbal for "Arjan Valley". "12th Fail" star Vikrant Massey won best actor (critics) Filmfare. The film also won in the screenplay and editing categories. Best actress (critics) trophy was shared by Rani Mukerji ('Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway') and Shefali Shah ('Three of Us'). "Three of Us" director Avinash Arun Dhaware won the trophy for the film's cinematography. Manoj Bajpayee-starrer "Joram" won best film (critics) award as well as best story recognition for Amit Rai and Devashish Makhija. Amitabh Bhattacharya's "Tere Vaaste" from "Zara Hatke Zara Bachke" won best lyrics while Shilpa Rao was recognised as the best female playback singer for "Besharam Rang" from "Pathaan". Kaushal's film "Sam Bahadur" won Filmfare for best production design and costume design. Best debut director went to Tarun Dudeja for "Dhak Dhak" and best debut actor male to Aditya Rawal for Hansal Mehta-directed "Faraaz". Alizeh Agnihotri won the trophy for best female debut for "Farrey" at the awards show where filmmaker David Dhawan was honoured with the lifetime achievement award. The riveting IPL 2023 season saw a fitting finale, giving fans a lot of exciting moments as they cheered for their favourite teams. The 2023 season saw plenty of incredible performances by domestic as well as international players. Here's a look at the top three players from each team this season. Chennai Super Kings: Devon Conway became the second-highest scorer for Chennai Super Kings after Michal Hussey. Conway scored a total of 672 runs this season with 92 being his highest score at an average of 51.69 and a strike rate of 139.71. The Kiwi had six half-centuries to his name. Shivam Dube, the powerful middle-order batter, scored 418 runs with an average of 38.00 and a strike rate of 158.33. Dube had three fifties to his name in this IPL season, with 52 being his highest score. His teammate <keyword id="4238575" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ruturaj-gaikwad" source="Orion">Ruturaj Gaikwad</keyword> scored a total of 590 runs with 92 being his highest score an average of 42.14 and a strike rate of 147.50. Gaikwad has scored four fifties in the 2023 season. Tushar Deshpande took 21 wickets with an average of 26.86, an economy of 9.92 and a strike rate of 16.24. Deshpande's best bowling effort this season is 3/45. Gujarat Titans: Shubman Gill, the outstanding player from Gujarat Titans became a sensation as he amassed 890 runs with an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80 in the 2023 season and has been the highest run scorer with three centuries and four half-centuries this season. His highest score this season was 129. One of the best seam bowlers that India has produced, Mohammad Shami took the most wickets for his team with 28 scalps at an average of 18.64, economy of 8.03 and strike rate of 13.93. Shami's best this season is 4/11. Rashid Khans' performance has been on another level with him racking up 27 wickets at an average of 20.44, an economy of 8.24 and a strike rate of 14.89, the second highest after his GT teammate Mohammed Shami and his best bowling effort was 4/30. He also racked up 130 runs at an average of 32.50. Mumbai Indians: <keyword id="496245" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="suryakumar-yadav" source="Orion">Suryakumar Yadav</keyword> emerged as the top batter for five-time champions Mumbai Indians. Yadav scored a total of 605 runs at an average of 32.17 and a strike rate of 181.14. Despite a slow start in the beginning he scored runs in the latter half of the season with a single century and five half-centuries and 103* being his highest score. Elegant left-hand batsman <keyword id="7915352" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tilak-verma" source="Orion">Tilak Verma</keyword> scored a total of 343 runs at an average of 42.88 and a strike rate of 164.11. In his last IPL match of the current season against Gujarat at the Narendra Modi Stadium, he blazed 43 runs off just 14 balls. His best score this season was an unbeaten 84. Cameron Green, who debuted this season for MI, scored 452 runs at an average of 50.22 and a strike rate of 160.28. With 100* being his highest score, he had a century and two half-centuries to his name. Green also picked up 6 wickets at an average of 60.17, an economy of 9.50 and a strike rate of 38.00. Royal Challengers Banglore: RCB's ace and former skipper Virat Kohli regained his form and produced astonishing performances this season, scoring 639 runs at an average of 53.25 and a strike rate of 139.82. Kohli's best score this season is 101*. He had two centuries and six half-centuries against his name. RCB's skipper Faf du Plessis was the second-highest run-scorer this season with a total of 730 runs this season at an average of 56.15 and a strike rate of 153.68. His best score was 84. He had a total of eight half-centuries this season. One of Team India's premier fast bowlers, Mohammed Siraj was the highest wicket-taker for his franchise this season, picking up 19 wickets at an average of 19.79 and an economy of 7.52 and a strike rate of 15.79. Siraj's best effort this season was 4/21. Rajasthan Royals: <keyword id="1999303" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="yashasvi-jaiswal" source="Orion">Yashasvi Jaiswal</keyword> has impressed in his three IPL seasons. Punjab Kings: PBKS captain Shikhar Dhawan was the highest scorer for his team amassing 373 runs with an average of 41.44 at a strike rate of 142.91. Mumbai, May 9 () Actor-producer Jackky Bhagnani forbodes that in the post-coronavirus film industry, it might take more time for movies to be greenlit.Talking both from the perspective of a producer and actor, Jackky said there will be some changes that will happen once the countrywide lockdown is lifted."As an actor, I see that there will be a lesser number of projects that will go on the floors. Most investors and producers will take their time to green-light projects."As a producer, there might be some pragmatic decisions to be taken on which projects to do first and how to minimise costs without affecting the scale or demands of the script," he told .Jackky's production banner, Pooja Entertatinment's two films -- Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan-starrer "Coolie No 1" and Akshay Kumar's "Bell Bottom" -- were affected by the coronavirus pandemic.When asked about the plans for "Coolie No 1", which was expected to release countrywide on May 1, Jackky said, "I think it's insensitive to think of a release date right now. Let us overcome this crisis and we will announce it in happier times. No decision taken as of now."The film, directed by David Dhawan, is a remake of the 1995 film of the same name.Akshay's "Bell-Bottom" is an espionage thriller, to be directed by Ranjit M Tewari. The film was scheduled to go on floors by mid this year with a release date in January 2021."We already have a plan. But we will have to wait for the lockdown to be completely over and for the government to give a go ahead to be in a position to give more details," Jackky said.He added that just like every other sector of the economy, the film industry also finds itself on pause."It is difficult to gauge the impact in numbers right now. But it has definitely hit release dates, film shoots and future planning for every member of the industry," the actor-producer said.Jackky further said that as a producer, he will be undertaking precautionary measures on the sets of his upcoming projects."The first key words are safety and precaution. The one important lesson from this pandemic is human life and health are top priority. All the upcoming shoots will have the highest and stringent measures of sanitisation and hygiene as per the government guidelines," he said."We are also mulling closed sets and studios for shooting so as to minimise touch points and allow only a certain number of people on set," he added.
