<ul class="summary-list"><li>Organizations are shifting to hybrid cloud and on-prem IT infrastructure for more control over data.</li><li>This trend is driven by data privacy, security concerns, and AI's growing influence.</li></ul>There's a change in the winds of IT infrastructure. After a decadeslong rush to the cloud, many organizations are exploring ways to exercise more control over their data and IT infrastructure.Rather than depending solely on third-party cloud services, they're looking to operate their IT data networks on-site. This strategy, often referred to as on-premises or on-prem, is gaining renewed interest thanks to factors such as data privacy and security concerns, regulations designed to hold organizations accountable for the data they collect, and the rise of artificial intelligence.The interest in on-prem doesn't represent a wholesale rejection of the cloud; many organizations are looking for more control from the cloud services they choose and seek to blend them with on-prem hardware."We're seeing more demand for on-prem," Hang Tan, the hybrid cloud chief operating officer of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, told Business Insider. "I don't think customers are thinking about it like it's a zero-sum game where either something goes to the public cloud or entirely on-prem. There's a recognition that customers need to have a more hybrid environment."<div type="image" title="Hang Tan wearing a suit jacket over a dress shirt in a portrait" height="2674" width="2526" msid="112500772" hostid="261" sizebytes="546952"></div><h2 id="729c5a6d-1380-4364-adfa-d63ff00eb555">A push for on-prem</h2>This trend is a response to concerns about the reliability, security, and cost-effectiveness of cloud services. But it's not a binary choice between hosting IT networks on the cloud and hosting them on-prem. Often the most important decision isn't about the physical location of an organization's infrastructure but about the level of security and control the organization is given over it."It's more about the governance of infrastructure, including data, networking, and servers," said Peter Wang, the cofounder and chief innovation officer of the software developer Anaconda. "Who manages it? Who gets to say, 'No, absolutely, you can't do that.'" His company, founded in 2012 to help organizations use <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/snowflake-announces-partnership-with-anaconda-python-data-science-2021-9">Python for business analytics</a>, found itself at the leading edge of this discussion as Python became a popular <a target="_blank" href="https://www.techzine.eu/blogs/devops/117952/popularity-of-python-continues-to-rise-against-backdrop-of-ai-race/">programming language for AI workloads</a>.<div type="image" title="Peter Wang wears a button-up dress shirt and smiles in a portrait shot" height="5111" width="5111" msid="112500766" hostid="261" sizebytes="379940"></div>Anaconda works with organizations that pursue a spectrum of solutions. Those seeking the most extreme security may operate "a box in a building somewhere, oftentimes guarded by people with machine guns, where you go in with a flash drive," Wang said. But that's applicable to only the most security-conscious industries and some public-sector customers.Rather than placing infrastructure under lock and key behind a barbed-wire fence, Wang said, many organizations prefer to see cloud services include more detailed data-governance controls and low-level access to system resources. This can give organizations a level of control over cloud infrastructure that's more like what they'd have if the hardware were on-prem.Dennis Duckworth, the head of product and end-user experience at Kindo, an AI-driven workforce-software developer, offered a similar perspective. Kindo provides a secure management platform for AI systems that lets organizations control which users have access to internal AI resources.Duckworth said that some Kindo customers used an air-gapped on-prem strategy but that most were using, or looking to use, a secure and controllable solution that could be deployed within a cloud service such as Amazon Web Services. "They're not hosting it themselves, but we can deploy within that infrastructure," he said.<div type="image" title="Dennis Duckworth smiles while wearing a dress shirt and jeans" height="1000" width="750" msid="112500768" hostid="261" sizebytes="50674"></div>Perspectives on the trend differ depending on an organization's size and industry. Chris Stegh, the chief technology officer at the IT consulting company eGroup Enabling Technologies, said some sectors, like education and healthcare, pursued on-prem solutions for cost reasons."The commonalities of those organizations are they've got brick and mortar," Stegh said. "They've got sunk costs in their data center because they own some real estate."<h2 id="1e22b520-3eb5-417e-9814-5cca0937b265">AI is igniting changes in IT strategy</h2>Tan said AI was "pouring rocket fuel" into the on-prem trend by driving a desire for greater control and better governance of data and IT infrastructure. While many organizations hope AI will improve efficiency, they've discovered it can require a rethink of how their infrastructure operates.The particulars of IT infrastructure are often guided by the relationship between the applications people want to use and the data those applications require to function, Tan told BI. "With AI, because the data is dominating the equation, you have to move the application to the data, not the other way around," he explained.Tan said that an HPE customer that runs a large retail business originally put infrastructure on-prem to allow operations to continue if internet connectivity was interrupted. Over time, the retailer expanded its capabilities with theft detection and inventory control powered by AI video analytics handled on hardware in stores.These edge servers were "becoming AI-enabled cloudlets," or small-scale data centers that use <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-is-a-graphics-card">graphics processing units</a> to operate "a whole private cloud stack," Tan added.In other cases, a company may need to take multiple approaches. Tan used self-driving vehicles as an example: Autonomous vehicles make decisions on local hardware, but the data is also sent to a data center, where it may be used to train new AI models. Because of that, many organizations interested in AI need a hybrid cloud infrastructure that includes cloud and on-prem elements — and that can connect them when needed.<h2 id="d0eb7c75-c19f-416a-8f59-5dec5d0980a6">The role of regulation</h2>Regulatory concerns are further strengthening interest in on-prem and hybrid cloud strategies. The landscape of data protection and AI regulation is evolving rapidly as different nations and states or jurisdictions within nations implement varying rules and requirements. Duckworth said this would lead to a complex regulatory future."We're going to see a patchwork of different regulations across the globe," he said. "It might be that in Germany you can't use ChatGPT, but you can use Mistral," he said. He also referenced recent <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tomshardware.com/software/switzerland-mandates-government-agencies-use-open-source-software">legislation in Switzerland</a> mandating that government agencies use open-source software.Even cities may implement specific regulations. In 2021, Portland, Oregon, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.opb.org/article/2020/09/09/portland-passes-nations-toughest-restriction-on-facial-recognition-technology/">passed restrictions on facial recognition</a> that applied to both public and private services. Other cities, such as San Francisco, have experimented with bans that apply to specific public services, such as police departments.Duckworth argued that organizations were struggling to keep up with existing regulations, never mind those that might be implemented in the future. As more regulations arrive and are enforced, organizations could find themselves scrambling to adapt. "It will, in my personal opinion, be a madhouse for three to five years," he added.<h2 id="2775415b-3109-40e7-8e21-e8ce8fef1ab8">Moving ahead with caution</h2>AI might be the catalyst for a broader reexamination of how organizations manage their IT infrastructure. Cloud services aren't going away but may be approached with more skepticism and a greater focus on the long-term implications of adopting a particular service. The winners will be those that can bridge cloud and on-prem to provide the level of control organizations are demanding."My view is that customers that made the cloud journey learned some lessons. They know, 'Oh, if I move my data to the cloud, I'm kind of stuck,'" Tan told BI. He said he expects that organizations burned by that experience will be more skeptical of going all in on the cloud moving forward, adding momentum to interest in on-prem and hybrid cloud alternatives.

Wisp CEO Monica Cepak told Business Insider that women are "taking action as they navigate the uncertainty of these next few years.""This data indicates to us that women are really scared and are using this moment in time to take back agency over their reproductive rights by stockpiling things like emergency contraception and investing in preventive reproductive health," Cepak said.In his first term, Trump put three conservative justices on the Supreme Court, which then <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-abortion-decision-final-ruling-scotus-roe-v-wade-2022-6">overturned Roe v. There was a 600% increase in medication abortion sales and a 50% increase in birth control sales.Overall, Wisp's reproductive health sales (of emergency contraception, birth control, and medication abortion products) doubled compared to the week prior to the election, the company told Business Insider."We expect that momentum to sustain over the next few weeks and months," Cepak said.The purchases came from women in both anti-abortion states as well as states with widespread access to reproductive healthcare. As of 2021, according to Crunchbase, it had raised over $1 billion from investors.However, a 2023 <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/23andme-data-stolen-hacked-sold-dark-web-2023-10">data hack</a> kicked off a series of problematic hurdles that 23andMe just can't seem to clear.News that hackers were selling user data — which included birth details and names — on the <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/23andme-data-stolen-hacked-sold-dark-web-2023-10">dark web</a> broke that October. The company confirmed in December that <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/23and-me-hack-data-breach-personal-data-2023-12">hackers had accessed ancestry data</a> for just under 7 million users. A data breach notification filing in January said it took 23andMe <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/23andme-hackers-breached-customer-accounts-took-five-months-to-detect-2024-1">five months</a> to realize hackers had stolen the data.The incident led to a class action lawsuit, which 23andMe settled this September for $30 million, according to Reuters.Less than a week later, the independent directors of 23andMe's board resigned in a letter addressed to CEO and cofounder <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/23andme-ceo-anne-wojcicki-life-career-family-photos-2021-3">Anne Wojcicki</a>.The letter said the directors "wholeheartedly support" 23andMe's mission, but "it is also clear that we differ on the strategic direction for the Company going forward."<div type="image" title="23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki" height="1991" width="2982" msid="113994219" hostid="261" sizebytes="309018"></div>The Wall Street Journal reported that despite earning $299 million in revenue in 2023 and $219 million in 2024, the company never made a profit. She walked back that statement later that month in a separate filing, but the damage was done.Outlets like The Atlantic reported that Wojcicki's potential sale of 23andMe could also mean the sale of user data. The director of cybersecurity at Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit focused on digital privacy, urged their 186,000 X followers to delete their data from 23andMe. That post garnered more than 531,000 views in three days.The X post touched on concerns plaguing the DNA test kit industry: Your private DNA data may not stay private."Data is data — once it's out there, it's very hard to control," <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/privacy-security-risks-genetic-testing-23andme-ancestry-dna-2019-2">James Hazel</a>, a biomedical researcher, told Business Insider in 2019.23andMe says the personal data it collects includes registration information like birth date, genetic information like a user's genotype, sample information like saliva, and self-reported information."Beyond our contracted laboratory, with which we work to process a customer's sample and deliver their results, customer information will not be shared with any other entity unless they provide us with consent to do so," a 23andMe spokesperson told Business Insider.The spokesperson said the company doesn't share data with "employers, insurance companies, law enforcement agencies or any public databases."<h2 id="412bbc19-4bef-4532-9c97-39228ce572c0">Here's how to ask 23andMe to delete your data</h2>Users who want their personal information removed from 23andMe can opt-out in the "23andMe Data" section in Account Settings. But 23andMe says it is legally required to retain some information."While we will delete the majority of your Personal Information, we are required to retain some information to comply with our legal obligation," the company's website says."23andMe and/or our contracted genotyping laboratory will retain your Genetic Information, date of birth, and sex as required for compliance with applicable legal obligations... even if you chose to delete your account," the company's privacy statement says.The privacy statement says 23andMe will also retain some information associated with user accounts, like email addresses.For users who participated in 23andMe Research, their genetic data and self-reported information won't be used in future research projects."Customers always have the option to delete their account at any time, and once the request is confirmed, we will immediately and automatically begin the deletion process," the spokesperson said. "Deleting an account and associated data will permanently delete the data associated with all profiles within the account. If a customer asks us to store their genetic samples, they will be discarded."

With Python established as a leading language for <keyword id="21065919" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-workloads" source="keywords">AI workloads</keyword>, Anaconda is broadening its focus to <keyword id="19897745" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-science" source="keywords">data science</keyword> and artificial intelligence, with the goal of becoming a common software layer for high-performance AI. Anaconda has introduced tools to help companies and people get started with AI <keyword id="19897804" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="large-language-models" source="keywords">large language models</keyword>. One such tool is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.anaconda.com/products/ai-navigator">AI Navigator</a>, a desktop app that can run AI models locally on Windows and Mac, with Linux support coming soon. The company has 300 full-time employees and 40 million users worldwide. Business Insider spoke with Wang to learn more about how AI workloads are prompting companies to think about bringing more of their <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/artificial-intelligence-data-privacy-on-premises-information-technology-solutions-2024-8">IT infrastructure on-premises</a> — and the hardware and software challenges that come with making such a move. The following has been edited for clarity and length. Can you talk about on-premises infrastructure and what that term means to you in 2024? On-premises initially meant servers within the company's physical location. Now it's more about the governance of infrastructure, including data, networking, and servers. Who manages it? Who gets to say, "No, absolutely, you can't do that," or, "Yes, you can do that?" At Anaconda, we see customers across the spectrum. Some have what we call air-gapped systems, not connected to the internet at all. These might be a box in a building somewhere, oftentimes guarded by people with machine guns, where you go in with a flash drive. That's the hardcore level of secure on-prem. On the other end, we see businesses that use a lot of cloud resources. But even they need stricter boundaries. They work with cloud providers to set up virtual private clouds or to provision resources with specific governance rules and policies. Why are companies interested in on-premises solutions for AI and large language models? We see a lot of interest from companies wanting control over their own destiny. They want to fine-tune models on their own data, connect them to internal databases for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retrieval-augmented-generation-making-ai-language-models-better-2024-5">retrieval-augmented generation</a>, and use agent-based models. If a company can only consume AI as a cloud end point, you have to tie all your internal systems to that cloud AI service, which is difficult. And many of these cloud AI companies, while they are well capitalized, are still relatively new as enterprise-software players. There are a lot of concerns about data leakage and compliance. Running locally gives more control and reduces the risk of accidental data exposure. You don't have to worry about a junior IT person at a cloud startup accidentally misconfiguring something and causing a data breach. The risks of a data breach are clear, but many companies seem concerned about any external use of their data for AI. Why is that? People have said that data is oil. If your data is oil, LLMs are like the internal-combustion engine, meaning they provide a much more interesting way to use that oil. Companies want to use their sensitive "crown jewel" data with LLMs to gain insights and improve predictive analytics. These use cases are central to their business, so they're protective of this data. They don't trust putting it on external systems where it could leak valuable information like customer insights or product preferences. When people think of "on-prem," they tend to focus on hardware. But much of what you are describing seems like software. Can you explain that in more detail? The hardware for AI work is often similar across setups. It's typically high-end <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-gpu-chips-ai-branding-popularity-2024-6">Nvidia GPUs</a>, though not always the latest or most expensive versions. On top of that hardware stack, the software needed to run an LLM isn't exotic if you know what you're doing. But there's a big asterisk here. The challenges often come from internal IT policies, organizational competencies, and the dynamic nature of AI workloads. For example, if your organization is familiar with Docker or Kubernetes, great. But if you're a Java shop used to deploying with Maven, or a Ruby shop unfamiliar with Python, that creates hurdles. When these companies want to start an internal LLM, that's where they can use help. AI workloads require varying amounts of computing power at different times. When you're training, you might need a lot of GPUs, fewer, or different kinds — or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-is-a-cpu">even just CPUs</a>. This dynamic set of hardware requirements, sometimes very bursty in terms of when and how long you need it, creates an orchestration challenge. That becomes a software challenge, and then an organizational one. Are you saying the challenge is optimizing software for efficient and dynamic use of hardware? I actually think it's more of a broad competency challenge for a company. In traditional software development, the IT group talks to the software-development group. The developers specify their needs for memory, bandwidth, storage, and IT provisions for them. But data scientists and machine-learning teams have dynamic needs. They require newer, more advanced hardware, and the software they run is Python with many dependencies, like specific GPU-driver versions. The challenges organizations face in on-premises AI relate to the dynamic nature of server and machine orchestration and the open-source-software ecosystem they're tapping into. This is especially true for compliance and security requirements. Speaking of open source, what are your thoughts on open versus closed LLMs? I've tried to stay out of the fray on social media, but my take is that current LLMs, especially the frontier models, have a lot of overlap in capabilities. Some are better than others in certain aspects, but at their core, once you throw enough data at them, these models start to become similar to each other. Making open models like Meta's Llama freely available is a game changer. The original Llama release was significant, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-meta-llama-ai-model-praise-open-source-musk-2024-7">the latest Llama 3.1 model</a>, with 400 billion parameters, is a massive step forward. It will increase interest in running models on-premises, especially for fine-tuning on sensitive data. But while these models are often called open, they're not open in the traditional open-source sense. You can use them freely, but you can't rebuild them from scratch or modify them at will. The training data, scripts, and hyperparameters are often not disclosed. It's a complex issue that involves considerations of safety and licensing. The data used for training is a particularly big issue that no one really talks about. How should a company looking to implement on-premises AI get started? Anaconda has an <keyword id="23150764" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-Navigator" source="keywords">AI Navigator</keyword> tool that is a great way to get started. It's a simple graphical interface where you can download appropriate models for your computer. We're currently running this in beta, and we're eager to get feedback from users. Our tool connects to our curated model repository. We've quantized models to make them smaller and more efficient for different machines, which is important because downloading models from public repositories can pose security risks. For example, we've seen attacks where someone uploads a fine-tuned code-generation model that hallucinates nonexistent Python packages. It generates code that tries to import or install these fake packages, and then the attacker creates malicious versions of these packages in the real world. When users try to run the generated code, they install these malicious packages. Our tool helps users get past many initial hurdles in setting up and running AI models locally. It accelerates the process of getting the software running correctly for a given machine, making it easier and safer for businesses to start exploring on-premises AI solutions. European media companies are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://pressgazette.co.uk/marketing/consent-or-pay-news-websites-uk/#:~:text=Sara%20Vincent%2C%20managing%20director%2C%20UK,of%20monetisation%20for%20the%20publisher.">increasingly asking users to consent to being served personalized advertising</a> — which is generally more lucrative than non-targeted ads — or else pay to access their content.The French trade groups also say in the letter that they found in testing that — on some occasions — all ads on certain websites were hidden after the user chose to hide ads on one page on the site.The letter says this poses "an existential threat to the online advertising model, which underpins a significant portion of the internet's economy."Lastly, the letter says that by allowing users to hide any content on a webpage — and in particular, the editorial content produced by media outlets — Distraction Control could fuel the "manipulation of information" and its spread across the internet. While it's possible to manipulate web pages using image-editing tools, Distraction Control makes it very easy to zap away certain content with a tap, take a screenshot, and share it, said Pierre Devoize, deputy managing director of digital marketing organization Alliance Digitale, one of the trade associations that co-signed the letter.The letter was co-signed by Alliance Digitale, press organization Alliance de la Presse d'Information Générale, online publishing association Geste, ad agency body Syndicat des Régies Internet, advertising group Union des Marques, and UDECAM, the union of media buying and planning agencies.The letter urges Apple to suspend the rollout of Distraction Control and to provide technical documentation about its functionalities and any planned updates.The groups say in the letter that they are "actively considering all available legal resources" related to data protection, freedom of the press, intellectual property rights, copyright and trademark law, and competition regulation.The letter was also copied to several French ministers, the French competition authority, and the European Commission.<h2 id="ceb5ec9d-7e4e-49f3-90c8-cbe55694c8fe">Publishers and ad companies have been hit by Apple software updates in the past</h2>Earlier this year, the same French groups raised concerns to Apple about reports about an anticipated feature called "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/publishers-advertisers-ask-tim-cook-halt-apple-web-eraser-tool-2024-5">Web Eraser</a>," which they worried could hobble their ad revenue.That letter was in response to reporting from <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://appleinsider.com/articles/24/04/30/apple-to-unveil-ai-enabled-safari-browser-alongside-new-operating-systems">AppleInsider</a> that, citing people familiar with the matter, described the planned feature as allowing Safari users to remove content and have the browser recognize those choices — a description that bears a striking resemblance to Distraction Control. The UK publishing group <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/c6dcbe7b-eaf0-41d1-adb4-f9a68542e2cb">News Media Association</a> also sent a letter to Apple warning that such a tool would threaten the financial sustainability of journalism.AppleInsider later reported Apple had changed the name of the feature from Web Eraser to Distraction Control and updated it to include a popup explaining that it would "not permanently remove ads."Publishers and ad companies have been hit by Apple software updates before. Its 2021 App Tracking Transparency update forced app owners to get explicit permission from users before tracking them across other apps and websites. Hard landing? More like no landingInstitutions such as Bank of America and UBS have recently noted rising odds of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-interest-rate-cuts-outlook-economy-recession-no-landing-borrowing-2024-10">"no landing" outcome</a>. In this scenario, US growth remains stronger than estimated, keeping inflation above target and interest rates elevated.Consider the amount of positive data points that have surprised investors recently.There was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/september-jobs-report-unemployment-rate-nonfarm-payroll-growth-federal-reserve-2024-10">September's blowout jobs print</a>, which showed employers added a stunning 254,000 new positions and pulled the unemployment rate down to 4.1%.Meanwhile, recent GDP and gross domestic income revisions have also been "overwhelmingly positive," BofA said, and this week's robust retail data shows that consumer spending has stayed strong, as real core control retail sales climbed 0.4%, compared to 0.1% in August and above estimates of 0.3%.<div type="image" title="Chart showing core control retail sales" height="1382" width="2368" msid="114399411" hostid="261" sizebytes="85128"></div>"This has led to fewer questions about downside risks and more on upside risks," BofA summarized in a Monday note.Reacceleration could make investors uneasy, dashing hopes for swift rate cuts from the Fed. As <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-september-cpi-consumer-price-index-federal-reserve-interest-rates-2024-10">inflation ticked up to 2.4% in September</a>, odds of an upcoming half-point <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html?redirect=/trading/interest-rates/countdown-to-fomc.html">interest rate cut</a> have tanked, and investors see 25 basis points as the most likely move in November.According to BofA, a no-landing scenario is bullish for stocks as long as inflation doesn't flare up again.The trading playbookHarris Financial Group's Jamie Cox told Business Insider that an inflation rebound is unlikely. In his view, inflation will continue to come down, allowing the Fed to lower rates gradually. Paired with strong GDP growth, investors should readjust expectations of how deep these rate cuts will be, the managing partner said.According to Cox, that means that short-term interest rates will drop to around 3% in the no landing scenario, even if long-term rates remain elevated.That's good news for equities, as it will prompt money market investors and T-bill traders to move back into the stock market, he said. As this happens, high-dividend value sectors with strong cash flows will receive a boost. These include staples, utilities, and telecom. A steepening yield curve should also benefit financials."They're not going back and buying Nvidia, that money is not going back into Apple and all that kind of stuff," Cox said, referring to go-to tech names during the rate cycle's peak. "You can see the flows of funds, you know, back into dividend-paying stocks. And that's why the market's broadening back out."Meanwhile, small caps can also expect to see upside, he said. The rate-sensitive sector has been under pressure in past years but was recently upgraded to neutral by Morgan Stanley. The bank said it would turn "outright bullish" on the sector if upward revisions to GDP continue, among other things.Whatever investors do, they shouldn't get bearish and sell.After all, a no landing scenario is the best outcome for the economy, Cox said, and given hot growth, the situation effectively tosses recession fears out the window.This would be just the fourth time in US history that the Fed has cut interest rates without a downturn, he added. In each case, markets were incredibly strong two to three years out, he said."[This scenario isn't] the base case for a lot of people who want bond yields and interest rates to drop a lot, and I think that people need to be careful about what they expect the Fed to do," the managing partner said. "The rates are not going to drop as much as what people think, and that's okay; it's actually good."

It calls PowerSchool a "multibillion-dollar surveillance-technology empire." It demands that the company pay back untold millions of dollars earned by selling student data "products" to more than 100 of its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.powerschool.com/company/partners/">partners</a>, including educational consulting firms and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25259171-powerschool-guide-to-p20w">government policymakers</a>.One partner, an educational consulting firm, offers marketing guidance to colleges, trade schools, and the military based on data from the 6 million high school students who use PowerSchool's Naviance college-planning software, the lawsuit alleges."PowerSchool collects this highly sensitive information under the guise of educational support," the lawsuit alleges, "but in fact collects it for its own commercial gain," while hiding behind "opaque terms of service such that no one can understand."PowerSchool is throwing big rocks back.The days of "spiral-bound grading books" are long over, the edtech company's lawyers counter in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25260257-cherkin-v-powerschool-motion-to-dismiss-20240722">a motion to dismiss</a> filed in July.The motion argues that PowerSchools is legally allowed to collect data voluntarily submitted by students and administrators, along with metadata about "unique device identifiers," IP addresses, and "cookie data."PowerSchool also argues that it "adequately discloses" what data it collects.PowerSchool spokesman Austin Zerbach told BI that no PowerSchool product sells any form of student data. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (<keyword id="41780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iisc" source="Orion">IISc</keyword>) have developed a brain-inspired analog computing platform capable of storing and processing <keyword id="6355729" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="data" source="Orion">data</keyword> in an astonishing 16,500 conductance states within a molecular film. Published on September 11 in the journal Nature, this breakthrough represents a huge step forward over traditional digital computers in which data storage and processing are limited to just two states, the IISc s<keyword id="6355999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ai" source="Orion">ai</keyword>d. In a press release, the institute said that such a platform could potentially bring complex AI tasks, like training Large Language Models (LLMs), to personal devices like laptops and smartphones, thus taking us closer to democratising the development of AI tools. These developments are currently restricted to resource-heavy data centres, due to a lack of energy-efficient hardware. With silicon electronics nearing saturation, designing brain-inspired accelerators that can work alongside silicon chips to deliver faster, more efficient AI is also becoming crucial. "Neuromorphic computing has had its fair share of unsolved challenges for over a decade," explained <keyword id="23122611" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sreetosh-goswami" source="keywords">Sreetosh Goswami</keyword>, Assistant Professor at the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE), IISc, who led the research team. "With this discovery, we have almost nailed the perfect system - a rare feat," he said. According to IISc, the fundamental operation underlying most AI algorithms is quite basic - matrix multiplication, a concept taught in high school maths. But in digital computers, these calculations hog a lot of energy. The platform developed by the IISc team drastically cuts down both the time and energy involved, making these calculations a lot faster and easier. The molecular system at the heart of the platform was designed by <keyword id="23122609" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sreebrata-goswami" source="keywords">Sreebrata Goswami</keyword>, Visiting Professor at CeNSE. As molecules and ions wiggle and move within a material film, they create countless unique memory states, many of which have been inaccessible so far. Most digital devices are only able to access two states (high and low conductance), without being able to tap into the infinite number of intermediate states possible. By using precisely timed voltage pulses, the IISc team found a way to effectively trace a much larger number of molecular movements, and map each of these to a distinct electrical signal, forming an extensive "molecular diary" of different states. "This project brought together the precision of electrical engineering with the creativity of chemistry, letting us control molecular kinetics very precisely inside an electronic circuit powered by nanosecond voltage pulses," explained Goswami. "Tapping into these tiny molecular changes allowed the team to create a highly precise and efficient neuromorphic accelerator, which can store and process data within the same location, similar to the human brain. Such accelerators can be seamlessly integrated with silicon circuits to boost their performance and energy efficiency," the IISc said. IISc researchers said the key challenge that the team faced was characterising the various conductance states, which proved impossible using existing equipment. The team designed a custom circuit board that could measure voltages as tiny as a millionth of a volt, to pinpoint these individual states with unprecedented accuracy. It also turned this scientific discovery into a technological feat. The team was able to recreate NASA's iconic "Pillars of Creation" image from the James Webb Space Telescope data - originally created by a <keyword id="6537818" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supercomputer" source="Orion">supercomputer</keyword> - using just a tabletop computer. They were also able to do this at a fraction of the time and energy that traditional computers would need. Using their AI accelerator, the team recreated NASA's iconic "Pillars of Creation" image from the James Webb Space Telescope data on a tabletop computer - achieving this in a fraction of the time and energy required by traditional systems, it said. The team includes several students and research fellows at IISc. They also collaborated with Stanley Williams, Professor at Texas A&amp;M University and Damien Thompson, Professor at the University of Limerick, it added. The researchers believe that this breakthrough could be one of India's biggest leaps in AI hardware, putting the country on the map of global technology innovation. Navakanta Bhat, Professor at CeNSE and an expert in silicon electronics led the circuit and system design in this project. "What stands out is how we have transformed complex physics and chemistry understanding into groundbreaking technology for AI hardware," Goswami explained. "In the context of the India Semiconductor Mission, this development could be a game-changer, revolutionising industrial, consumer and strategic applications. The national importance of such research cannot be overstated," he said. With support from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the IISc team is now focused on developing a fully indigenous integrated neuromorphic chip. That number rose to 874 in 2022 and lowered slightly to 786 in 2023, per Ciesco.Now, a few years have passed, and leadership changes are to be expected, given historic PE investment cycles, said Mark Wright, a veteran tech investor and executive, who now leads the M&amp;A strategic advisory practice at Prohaska Consulting. Founding teams make way for more experienced operators who can take the company to the next level, he said."Although there are exceptions to the rule, there are very few founding teams that are marvelous at groundbreaking innovation that can successfully make the transition to managing and operating at scale," Wright said.Public and private valuations of adtech companies have dropped dramatically since 2021, the height of the zero-interest-rate period when there was a rise in digital ad spending and a slew of adtech IPOs. Tougher macroeconomic conditions in the years since put a strain on consumer spending and marketing budgets, cooling the markets and M&amp;A activity."Some of the changes you're seeing are indicative of a two-year cycle post-COVID where things are back to normal, or the new normal," Karl of JEGI Clarity said. "Where company performance could be tied to events that were out of their control a couple of years ago, that excuse no longer suffices. Investors want growth."Meeting growth expectations has been a challenge for some companies. JEGI Clarity, which, alongside CIL Management Consultants, conducted a survey of 25 marketing services agency leaders this summer, heard from multiple CEOs who said 2022 and 2023 were some of the most difficult operating environments of their careers.Those surveyed said they were more optimistic about 2024 now that rates have stabilized and clients are less risk-averse with their marketing budgets. Almost three-quarters (70%) of respondents in the study said that their margins had remained stable or increased this year.<h2 id="7a33b071-67d8-4249-828a-d18e4d17a037">CTV is adtech's bright spot – but it's complicated</h2>Despite a rising global advertising market that is expected to surpass $1 trillion in spending next year, not all adtech vendors are positioned to reap the rewards.Take the connected TV space. It's one of the fastest-growing ad channels in the US, with spending expected to grow 13.3% and cross $30 billion in 2025, according to Emarketer. "It's going to put a real emphasis on operating at scale and put a pressure on margins."As TV viewing grew fragmented, several adtech companies that took on investment in recent years positioned themselves as rivals to ratings giant Nielsen. These firms are jockeying to become the go-to companies for tracking audiences or to become the universal <a target="_blank" href="https://www.adexchanger.com/adexplainer/adexplainer-tv-measurement-vs-tv-currency/">currency</a> used to buy TV and video ads.But Nielsen still hasn't been unseated. And Walmart's acquisition of TV manufacturer Vizio — from which many adtech vendors license viewing data derived from its tens of millions of TV sets — could signal further trouble ahead if the grocery giant doesn't renew those contracts when they expire.With the Walmart-Vizio deal front of mind, adtech companies and investors are likely to turn their attention to retail media, where ads are placed on e-commerce sites. The other is data from online sources which is mostly the content created by other individuals and companies available publicly. And this has been a source of debate for a long time. Microsoft AI division CEO Mustafa Suleyman was in the news last month for saying that anyone can use the data available on the internet. However, Reddit CEO opposes this viewpoint and was recently making headlines for asking Microsoft to pay for using the data on Reddit. In the last few months, there have been various reports of content creators, actors, and companies taking action against AI companies for scraping their data to train their own AI models. Let us take a look at some of them. <h2>1. Microsoft</h2>Last week, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman made headlines for demanding that companies like Microsoft should pay for using the site’s data to train their AI models. A report in The Verge quoted Huffman saying that without such agreements, Reddit has no control over how its data is used or displayed, leading them to block companies unwilling to negotiate. He specifically called out Microsoft, <keyword id="20837420" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anthropic" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Anthropic" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Anthropic">Anthropic</keyword>, and Perplexity for refusing to come to terms. The Verge report added that Huffman also accused Microsoft of using Reddit’s data to train its AI and summarise content in Bing results without informing the platform. He also mentioned that Reddit’s data has been sold through the Bing API to other search engines. Referencing Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman’s comment, Huffman said that Microsoft, Anthropic, and Perplexity seem to believe all internet content is free for their use. <h2>2. Stability AI</h2>In March this year, Midjourney announced a ban on Stability AI employees from using its service, accusing them of causing a system outage by scraping Midjourney's data. On March 2nd, Midjourney reported on its Discord server that a prolonged server outage prevented generated images from displaying in user galleries, attributing the issue to "botnet-like activity from paid accounts" linked to Stability AI employees. According to a report in The Verge, during a business update call on March 6th, Midjourney claimed the outage occurred because "someone at Stability AI was trying to grab all the prompt and image pairs in the middle of the night on Saturday." The company traced multiple paid accounts back to a member of Stability AI's data team. Consequently, Midjourney indefinitely banned all Stability AI employees from using its service and introduced a new policy to ban employees from any company involved in "aggressive automation" or causing service outages. <h2>3. Runway</h2>Google-backed AI startup Runway was in the limelight last month for accusations of scraping thousands of YouTube videos without authorisation to train its AI video creation model. The allegations came to light through a leaked internal spreadsheet obtained by 404 Media. The spreadsheet, allegedly shared by a former Runway employee, outlined plans to categorise and tag content from over 3,900 YouTube channels, including big names like Disney, Netflix, and well-known YouTubers such as Casey Neistat and Marques Brownlee (MKBHD). This data was purportedly used to develop Runway's Gen-3 AI video creation model, previously known as "Jupiter." Runway did not verify the authenticity of the spreadsheet. The company had earlier claimed it used "curated, internal datasets" for training but did not disclose further details. Prominent YouTubers like MKBHD and MrWhoseTheBoss voiced their concerns on social media about the whole incident. MKBHD disclosed that over 1,600 of his videos had been scraped, while MrWhoseTheBoss described the practice as "scary," revealing that 1,600 of his videos were also used. <h2>4. OpenAI</h2>In May this year, Hollywood actress <keyword id="20353350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Scarlett-Johansson" source="keywords">Scarlett Johansson</keyword> sued OpenAI for using her voice likeness without asking for permission. OpenAI, on the other hand, had claimed that the voice in question belonged to other actors and not Johansson. Later that month, it was revealed that ChatGPT’s Sky voice (the voice in question) was being taken down. Johansson had also said that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had approached her twice for allowing them to clone her voice for the AI chatbot. However, she had declined the offer. Meanwhile Altman, in an interview with NBC News, said that Sky was not based on Johansson's voice. He explained that a professional actor recorded the voice, but the actor's identity cannot be revealed for privacy reasons. "We cast the voice actor behind Sky’s voice before any outreach to Ms. Johansson. Out of respect for Ms. Johansson, we have paused using Sky’s voice in our products. We are sorry to Ms. Johansson that we didn’t communicate better," he had said. <h2>5. Anthropic</h2>American AI startup Anthropic also found itself in the middle of a controversy last month. The startup faced accusations of aggressively scraping data from various websites to train its systems. A report in Financial Times said that Matt Barrie, CEO of Freelancer.com, claimed that Anthropic was "the most aggressive scraper by far" of his freelancing portal, which sees millions of daily visits. Other web publishers echoed Barrie’s concerns, stating that Anthropic's bots were inundating their sites and ignoring requests to stop collecting content for training purposes. Freelancer.com recorded 3.5 million visits from an Anthropic-linked web crawler within just four hours, according to data shared with the Financial Times. Barrie noted that this volume was "probably about five times the number two" AI crawler. Despite attempts to block access using standard web protocols, visits from Anthropic's bots continued to rise, prompting Barrie to block traffic from Anthropic’s internet addresses entirely. Anthropic responded by stating that it was investigating the issue and aimed to respect publishers' requests, striving not to be "intrusive or disruptive." The Financial Times also quoted Kyle Wiens, CEO of iFixit.com, who reported receiving 1 million hits from Anthropic bots in 24 hours. "We have a load of alarms [for high traffic], people get woken up at 3am. This set off every alarm we have," Wiens said. And now, days after our neighbour <keyword id="19899252" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pakistan" source="keywords">Pakistan</keyword> confirmed its second Mpox case this month, India has also reported its first one this season. While feeling uncertain is understandable, the situation is far from dire just yet. On Monday, September 9, 2024, the <keyword id="19896140" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-ministry" source="keywords">Health Ministry</keyword> confirmed that a previously suspected case of Mpox was a travel-related infection. The patient, a young male, recently returned from a country experiencing ongoing Mpox transmission. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the West African clade 2 of the Mpox virus, which is distinct from the more dangerous clade 1 currently under a public health emergency. In its statement, the Ministry emphasised that this case is isolated and in line with the 30 previous Mpox cases reported in India since July 2022.
