<ul class="summary-list"><li>Roman Abramovich and his ex-wife have an art collection worth close to $1 billion, leaked documents revealed. </li><li>Works by Freud, Hockney, and Picasso are among the 367 items in the collection, The Guardian reported.</li></ul><p>Russian businessman Roman Abramovich and his ex-wife, Dasha Zhukova, have amassed an art collection of 367 works worth almost $1 billion, an investigation by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2023/sep/22/roman-abramovich-art-collection-dasha-zhukova">The Guardian</a> and the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.occrp.org/en/investigations/leak-unveils-russian-oligarch-abramovichs-1-billion-art-collection-despite-sanctions-it-has-not-been-seized-or-frozen">Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project </a>(OCCRP) has revealed.</p><p>Leaked files obtained from a Cyprus-based financial services provider called MeritServus that were analyzed by The Guardian and OCCRP revealed the extent of the world's most impressive private art collections. </p><p>The collection is managed by a company called Seline-Invest, which is in turn owned by Abramovich's trust, the Ermis Trust Settlement, according to the investigation.</p><p>The collection is worth an estimated $963 million and includes works by some of the greatest modern artists including Picasso, Monet, Freud, and Hockney.</p><p>"You could fill a museum with it – this is a stupendous collection," Goldsmiths, University of London curation professor Andrew Renton told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2023/sep/22/roman-abramovich-art-collection-dasha-zhukova">The Guardian</a>.</p><p>Masterpieces like Francis Bacon's "Triptychs, 1976" cost the couple $86.3 million, the highest price paid at auction for a post-war work, per <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2023/09/22/oligarch-files-investigation-art-collection-of-roman-abramovich-and-dasha-zhukova">The Art Newspaper</a>.</p><p>Abramovich and Zhukova, who married in 2008 and separated in 2017, amassed the artworks over a decade during which they became prominent figures in the art world. The life-size 'Benefits Supervisor Sleeping, 1995' painting shows a naked Sue Tilley from London and is estimated to fetch between 25 to 35 million USD which would make it the most expensive auctioned artwork." height="2090" width="3000" msid="103893128" hostid="261" sizebytes="231538"></div><p>The investigation also uncovered that Abramovich made moves to protect the collection from asset seizures against Russian oligarchs in the weeks before Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.</p><p>The couple previously held a half-share of the collection, but the documents showed that Zhukova took a 51% share on 4 February 2022.</p><p>The restructuring enabled Abramavich to maintain possession of the collection, as only assets that were majority-owned by a sanctioned individual were subject to seizure.</p><p>Zhukova is a darling of the global art scene and is on the boards of several famous galleries. Through her second marriage she is now a US citizen and exempt from any sanctions. She has condemned Putin's "acts of war," per The Guardian.</p><div type="image" title="Abramovich yacht" height="3185" width="5000" msid="103893129" hostid="261" sizebytes="592130"></div><p>Abramovich was among seven Russian oligarchs <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/roman-abramovich-sanctions-oleg-deripaska-russian-oligarch-billionaires-2022-3">sanctioned by the UK</a> in March last year. His assets, including Chelsea soccer club, were frozen and his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-oligarchs-roman-abramovich-superyachts-properties-jets-seized-2022-3">$700 million superyacht</a>, on which pieces from the art collection are believed to be displayed, was seized.</p><p>He is also blocked from doing business in Britain or entering the UK.</p><p>The leaked files only date back to 2022, leaving the current location of the collection unclear.</p><p>Representatives for Abramovich and Zhukova did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Insider. Both declined to comment to The Guardian. </p><p>Meritservus has been <a target="_blank" href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1185897/Russia.pdf">sanctioned by the UK Government</a>.</p>

The report was later confirmed by outlets including The Guardian. They divorced when she was three, and Alexander went on to make a fortune in oil and finance when Soviet authorities began to loosen restrictions on private enterprise.</p><p><a href="https://www.ft.com/content/a71190e8-2934-11e2-9591-00144feabdc0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Per the Financial Times</a>, Zhukova left the Soviet Union in 1990, when she was in her thirties. She took a position at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1990 with her daughter, then nine years old.</p><p>The move was first thought to be temporary, her daughter told the FT, but they lived there for years until Zhukova was offered an opportunity at the University of California, Los Angeles to study diabetes.</p><p>By the time she retired, Zhukova was a professor of biology with several peer-reviewed scientific articles to her name.</p><p>Her daughter described her as a "very serious scientist" that was "more interested in substance than aesthetics." She recalled a childhood filled with "geeky" graduate students visiting the house, the FT reported in 2012.</p><p>Elena also has twins, a boy and a girl, from another relationship, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2009/oct/04/dasha-zhukova-interview-roman-abramovich" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to a Guardian profile of Dasha Zhukhova.</a></p><p>The younger Zhukova is an art collector, socialite, and businesswoman, who was married to Roman Abramovich, a Russian oligarch and the former owner of Chelsea FC. The couple had two children before their divorce in 2018.</p><p><a href="https://nypost.com/2018/09/14/roman-abramovich-transfers-92m-of-property-to-ex/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to The New York Post citing property records, </a>Abramovich transferred ownership of $92 million of New York City property to Dasha Zhukova after their divorce, including a 5-storey Upper East Side mansion, </p><p>Dasha Zhukova is currently married to Stavros Niarchos II, grandson of Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos. The couple have a son. </p><p>According to the Mail, Dasha is "great friends" with Murdoch's ex-wife Deng. </p><p>Murdoch has been married five times, divorcing Jerry Hall, ex wife of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, in 2022.</p>

<p>The outrageously fancy "Eclipse" belongs to <keyword id="88551" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Roman-Abramovich">Roman Abramovich</keyword>, the Russian billionaire who owns Chelsea Football Club.</p>
<p>No reason for the Eclipse's NYC stay, at Pier 90, has been offered by Abramovich or NYCruise, which operates the pier.</p>
<p>But it may be about a baby: Abramovich's girlfriend, <keyword id="1766590" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dasha-Zhukova">Dasha Zhukova</keyword>, is expecting a child in the Spring, and dock workers have said the yacht is scheduled to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/roman-abramovichs-yacht-in-midtown-2013-2#comments">stick around until mid-April</a>.</p>
<p>NYCruise touts itself as "home to the world's most spectacular — often fastest, biggest, and most luxurious — cruise ships," a fitting home for the Eclipse.</p>
<p>NYCruise is operated by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, which declined to comment on the Eclipse, and pointed us to David Keller, the President of Trans-Atlantic Agencies.</p>
<p>Keller said he could not discuss the arrangement, due to a non-disclosure agreement. He did note, however, that the Eclipse is docked at the only spot in lower Manhattan big enough to hold her.</p>
<p>A security guard at Pier 92, also operated by NYCruise, said the yacht belongs to a Russian named Roman, but offered no other information.</p>
<p>The yacht is in impressive company: Its neighbor is the Norwegian Star, the 965-foot cruise ship. On the other side of the Star is the Intrepid, the retired aircraft carrier turned museum.</p>
<p>The 533-foot Eclipse has two swimming pools, two helicopter pads, and a mini-submarine. It is equipped with a missile defense system and bullet-proof windows around Abramovich's suite, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/roman-abramovichs-yacht-in-midtown-2013-2#comments">according to the Daily Mail</a>.</p>
<p>There are 24 guest cabins, and the yacht is kept in order by an enormous, 70-member crew, <a href="http://www.superyachts.com/news/superyacht-eclipse:-worlds-largest-yacht-delivered-998.htm">according to Superyachts.com</a>.</p>
<p>The yacht, built by Blohm + Voss in Germany, was delivered to Abramovich in December 2010, for nearly $1.5 billion, the Daily Mail reported.</p>
<p>The Eclipse made port at St George's Harbour in Bermuda on January 29, the <a href="http://bermudasun.bm/Content/NEWS/News/Article/-World-s-biggest-private-yacht--in-Bermuda/24/270/63009">Bermuda Sun reported</a>, and arrived in New York on February 13.</p>

And with this union comes some new, shared history between Murdoch and a couple of Russian oligarchs, one of whom is thought to be a confidant to Russian President Vladimir Putin.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rupert-murdoch-marriage-engaged-elena-zhukova-2024-3">Murdoch announced his engagement</a> to Zhukova on Thursday. In 2001, Zhukov was detained in Italy and spent six months in jail over accusations that he worked with the Russian mafia to smuggle massive caches of arms, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2001/dec/09/world.tonythompson">The Guardian</a> reported. Their wedding will be held at his California vineyard and estate in June, The Times reported. Invites for the event have already been sent, a representative for Murdoch told the outlet.</p><p>Murdoch did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.</p><p>His most recent engagement comes less than two years after his divorce from Jerry Hall, a former supermodel and actor who was previously in a long-term relationship with Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Elena Zhukova, Ruper Murdoch's new girlfriend, has a past life as a scientist. </li><li>A former colleague told Insider he was aware she had a glamorous lifestyle. </li></ul><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rupert-murdoch-dating-again-4-months-after-calling-off-engagement-2023-8">Rupert Murdoch's new flame</a>, 66-year-old former scientist Elena Zhukova, always had a touch of glamor about her, but didn't flaunt it when she worked in the lab, a former colleague told Insider. </p><p>Lee Slice, who shared an office with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-elena-zhukova-rupert-murdochs-new-russian-girlfriend-2023-8">Zhukova</a> in UCLA in the 2000s, told Insider he "wasn't really surprised" to see the retired molecular biologist on Murdoch's arm.</p><p>"That was sort of a circle she interacted with, as well as the scientific community," Slice told Insider.</p><p>Zhukova was spotted vacationing with 92-year-old Fox Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch on a yacht and the couple has been cruising together in the Mediterranean for several weeks, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/media/2023/aug/16/rupert-murdoch-dating-again-four-months-after-breaking-off-engagement">the Guardian reported</a>. </p><p>The news came just four months after the billionaire <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rupert-murdoch-engagement-model-called-off-after-2-weeks-report-2023-4">called off his engagement</a> with conservative radio host Ann Lesley Smith, reportedly over disagreements about her evangelical views. </p><h2>Zhukova kept her glamorous life private</h2><p>Recalling his time with Zhukova, former colleague Slice, now a scientist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, told Insider that it was clear that she came from wealth. </p><p>Colleagues, he said, spoke of Zhukova's "really expensive" vacations and her expensive house.</p><p>"When I met her at UCLA, she was fairly wealthy, I think from a prior marriage," he said. "She lived in a house in Westwood off the UCLA campus, which is a very high-end area." </p><p>Westwood is the area next door to Beverly Hills in Los Angeles. Notable houses in the area include <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/celebrities-at-playboy-mansion-photos-2017-9">the Playboy Mansion</a>, said Slice.</p><p>Russian-born Zhukova previously described her family as being part of the "Moscow intelligentsia" in an <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2010/09/27/garage-mechanics">interview with The New Yorker</a> in 2010. She was previously married to Russian oil billionaire and financier Alexander Zhukova. </p><p>"If you're living a couple of blocks from UCLA, and a house here, you're pretty well off. Her clothing and her car were pretty standard for a scientist of her caliber. </p><p>"She was very down to Earth," said Slice. "She was a very good person to work with. Very smart, very straightforward."</p><p>Zhukova left the Soviet Union in 1990, to take a position at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, before relocating a few years later to the University of California, Los Angeles, <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/a71190e8-2934-11e2-9591-00144feabdc0">the Financial Times previously reported</a>. </p><p>Slice said Zhukova cared about science, speaking "confidently" with colleagues at events and conferences and she was a "good supervisor" and a "good mentor."</p><p>Her research in diabetes was respected, and could have been promising had her grant funding not dried up, said Slice. By the time she left UCLA, in the late 2000s, she had reached the status of assistant professor, Slice said. </p><p>It's not clear whether she has worked as a scientist since then.</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.tatler.com/article/rupert-murdoch-finds-love-with-elena-zhukova-dasha-zhukova-mother-with-roman-abramovich-ties">elite British society magazine Tatler</a>, Zhukova is now known for being "at the centre of a sprawling web of power that encompasses the art world, Russian oligarchs, and one of the world's most influential shipping dynasties."</p><p>Her influence extends notably through her eldest daughter, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ivanka-trump-friend-dasha-zhukova-bio-life-2017-8">Dasha</a>, an art collector, socialite, and businesswoman who was married to Roman Abramovich, a Russian oligarch and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/roman-abramovich-completes-sale-chelsea-owner-la-dodgers-todd-boehly-2022-5">former owner of Chelsea FC.</a> </p><p>Dasha is currently married to Stavros Niarchos II, grandson of Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12690587" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="russian-oligarchs" source="Orion">Russian oligarchs</keyword> have deep roots in the art industry as high-value collectors and patrons. </li><li>Auction houses, museums, and artists are cutting ties with the billionaires in response to sanctions.</li></ul><p>In London, the world's top auction houses <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-art-auction-houses-shuttering-sales-of-russian-art-london-2022-3">canceled</a> "Russian Art Week," the go-to art fair for wealthy Russian buyers. </p><p>In New York, Russian billionaire Vladimir Potanin <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/02/arts/design/vladimir-potanin-russian-oligarch-guggenheim.html">resigned</a> from the Guggenheim Museum's board of trustees.</p><p>In Moscow, artists are <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2022/03/russias-red-hot-temple-of-contemporary-art-losing-major-exhibitions">canceling their exhibits</a> in Garage, the museum founded by Dasha Zhukova, a socialite art collector and ex-wife of sanctioned oligarch Roman Abramovich.</p><p>As the world looks to retaliate against sanctioned Russian <keyword id="13281691" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="oligarchs" source="Orion">oligarchs</keyword> and their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-us-seize-yachts-apartments-russian-oligarchs-putin-2022-3">"ill-begotten gains,"</a> the notoriously opaque art industry is attempting to cut off decades-long relationships with the foreign tycoons.</p><p>But while personal assets like yachts, mansions, and jets are seized in the wake of the <keyword id="11985141" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ukraine" source="Orion">Ukraine</keyword> invasion, experts told Insider the $50 billion art industry faces "gaping holes" when it comes to the question of ownership. </p><h2>Russian oligarchs have spent millions on artwork purchased through US and UK auction houses and galleries</h2><div type="image" title="Roman Abramovich and Dasha Zhukova attend the Preview of the Spring Exhibition Season at Garage Museum of Contemporary Art on March 9, 2017 in Moscow, Russia." height="2582" width="3442" msid="90763609" hostid="261"></div><p>Mikhail Fridman, who is sanctioned by the EU and UK, bought Andy Warhol's 1962 "Four Marilyns" for <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/06/arts/design/four-marilyns-is-back-on-the-auction-block.html">$38.2 million at Phillips in 2013</a>. The next year, he flipped it to a Turkish banker for $44 million. </p><p>Roman Abramovich — who is also on the EU and UK sanctions lists — has <a href="https://www.artnews.com/art-collectors/top-200-profiles/roman-abramovich/">reportedly purchased works</a> including Lucian Freud's "Benefits Supervisor Sleeping" for $33.6 million at Christie's and a Francis Bacon triptych for $86.3 million at Sotheby's. </p><p>Both Fridman and Abramovich purchased their art through the Gagosian gallery in New York, whose founder has been called the "the official art dealer to the Russian oligarchy," according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/03/11/larry-gagosian-courted-russian-oligarchs-to-build-art-empire/">New York Post</a>. When asked if Gagosian's client relationships will change in light of recent sanctions, the gallery said it has "established effective internal controls and undertakes due diligence measures to fully comply with all relevant laws."</p><p>In late February, the US, Canada, and leading Western European countries <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/02/26/joint-statement-on-further-restrictive-economic-measures/">announced a task force</a> to identify and freeze assets held by Russian power elites in other jurisdictions.</p><p>But in order to freeze an asset, you need to prove who it belongs to — a multimillion-dollar question in the art world, where anonymous and concealed purchases are commonplace.</p><h2>The high-value art market is particularly vulnerable to illicit trade</h2><div type="image" title="Dmitry Rybolovlev poses in Paris on September 24, 2015 in front of two allegedly stolen paintings by Pablo Picasso, &quot;Espagnole a l'Eventail&quot; (L) and &quot;Femme se Coiffant&quot;, which he purchased from a Swiss art dealer." height="3456" width="5184" msid="90763610" hostid="261"></div><p>The global art market is "one of the least transparent parts of the financial system," Dr. Louise Shelley, director of the Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center at George Mason University, told Insider.</p><p>In 2020, a bipartisan Senate investigation <a href="https://www.hsgac.senate.gov/subcommittees/investigations/media/portman-carper-bipartisan-report-reveals-how-russian-oligarchs-use-secretive-art-industry-to-evade-us-sanctions">found</a> that art intermediaries bought more than $18 million in high-value art in the US through shell companies linked to Russian oligarchs after the US sanctioned them in March 2014.</p><p>And just two weeks ago, the US Treasury's <a href="https://www.fincen.gov/sites/default/files/2022-03/FinCEN%20Alert%20Russian%20Elites%20High%20Value%20Assets_508%20FINAL.pdf">Financial Crimes Enforcement Network sent out an alert</a> flagging the high-value art market as "attractive for money laundering by illicit actors, including sanctioned Russian elites."</p><p>The art world's structure is particularly susceptible to this practice of "washing" illegally obtained money so that it appears to come from legitimate sources.</p><p>For starters, it's often tough to identify the actual buyer, says Dr. Moyara Ruehsen, director of the Financial Crime Management Program at the Middlebury Institute of <keyword id="6356001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="international" source="Orion">International</keyword> Studies at Monterey.</p><p>"No one is going to purchase anything under their real name. Even somebody who has nothing to hide, it's either getting purchased by a trust or a shell company," Ruehsen told Insider. "Auction houses and art galleries rarely ever meet the person who is selling the artwork or the person who is buying the artwork."</p><p>Secondly, most art is easier to transport and hide than other assets, like yachts and private jets, many of which have been seized from Russian oligarchs in recent weeks.</p><p>High-end pieces are often stored in free economic zones or large warehouses called freeports, where goods are subject to little or no duties and taxes. Artwork can be bought and sold without ever leaving freeports, allowing it to remain inconspicuous as governments search the assets of sanctioned individuals. Sanctioned elites also can try to shield art from seizure by transferring ownership on paper to a close trusted associate who hasn't been sanctioned.</p><p>Artwork also has the added appeal of having a more subjective market price, allowing private owners to inflate prices by millions of dollars to boost profits.</p><p>"It's really hard to argue over what the true value of the product that we are trading really is," Ruehsen said. "With other commodities, it's harder to do that."</p><h2>How auction houses are dealing with the problem</h2><div type="image" title="A man walks past &quot;Untitled&quot; by Willem De Kooning during a preview of Sotheby's impressionist and modern art evening sale in New York, May 2, 2014. REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz " height="533" width="711" msid="90763612" hostid="261"></div><p>For their part, auction houses say they're prepared to weed out sanctioned individuals from their client lists.</p><p>Sotheby's told Insider that it "conducts business in strict compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including sanctions" and is "will comply with any regulations put in place."</p><p>Christie's said it has "immediately taken actions through our strict client identification and screening processes in place as part of our global anti-money laundering and sanctions compliance programmes."</p><p>"We are not permitting individuals or companies who are designated on applicable sanctions lists to transact with us," the company said. "<u></u><u></u><u></u>Politically exposed persons, and those with a connection to a sanctioned or other high risk jurisdictions, are also subject to enhanced due diligence."</p><p>A Phillips spokesperson told Insider the company has "measures in place to ensure that no individual or institution targeted by sanctions are able to do business directly or indirectly through our salerooms." Phillips is owned by Russian luxury goods company Mercury Group.</p><p>Paul Minshull, the COO and CTO at Heritage Auctions, said the company has had anti-money laundering policies in place for several years, which includes a daily check of sanctions lists. </p><p>But the galleries only have so much insight themselves.</p><p>"Our major problem generally is that we're not focusing on open records of beneficial ownership," Shelley said, referencing US property right laws. "That's a problem in the real estate market, it's a problem in the art market. It's a problem in our financial system across the board."</p>
