Independent directors of <keyword id="375475" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="future-retail" source="Orion">Future Retail</keyword> Ltd (FRL) have turned down <keyword id="18635" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword>'s offer of financial support to the company through a deal with private equity firm Samara Capital, saying the offer is "plainly an attempt to buy the FRL assets on the cheap". FRL's independent directors had last week asked Amazon if the e-commerce giant was willing to give a long-term loan to avoid default on repayment of Rs 3,500 crore loan due on January 29. Amazon replied that it was willing to financially assist Future Retail through the Samara Capital deal but the retailer must shelve Rs 24,713 crore deal with Reliance. The independent directors of FRL, in a letter on Tuesday, said it is now clear that Amazon's letters were "just a game of smoke and mirrors”. "Accordingly, we will not be assessing any proposals from you, until an actual solution which meets FRL's capital requirements and addresses concerns of its stakeholders, in a legally-compliant manner, is tabled," said the letter, a copy of which was seen by PTI. Amazon had told FRL that Samara Capital remains interested in buying out the debt-strapped retailer's businesses such as Big Bazaar for Rs 7,000 crore, and had asked FRL to provide its financial details to Samara Capital for the private equity fund to conduct expedited due diligence. The independent directors said the price of Rs 7,000 crore is "significantly below the amount needed to discharge FRL's total liabilities". "...FRL's Bank liabilities and part of the committed vendors payments till just March 2022 itself aggregate to Rs 12,027.31 crores. When seen in the context of the financials of the Reliance transaction by way of the Scheme of Arrangement, your offer is plainly an attempt to buy the FRL assets on the cheap," the letter stated. The letter also noted that the independent directors of FRL had accepted the transaction with Reliance as it addresses the needs of funds to pay off public sector bank lenders, suppliers of goods and helps FRL to meet almost all FRL's liabilities, and in the process helps protect the investment of small shareholders and jobs of over 25,000 employees. Copies of the letter were also sent to Enforcement Directorate, Sebi, Competition Commission of India, lenders like State Bank of India, Union Bank of India and Bank of Baroda as well as FRL Board of Directors. Terming the comparison between Reliance's offer and proposed transaction with Samara Capital as “misplaced”, the independent directors said the Scheme of Arrangement with Reliance Retail will be a court-approved transaction, and has already received the approvals of various regulators, including SEBI and CCI and that it is fully-compliant with Indian laws. Future and Amazon have been locked in a bitter legal tussle after the US e-commerce giant dragged <keyword id="44949" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="future-group" source="Orion">Future Group</keyword> to arbitration at the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) in October 2020, arguing that FRL had violated their contract by entering into a deal for the sale of its assets to billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Retail on a slump sale basis. The independent directors, in the January 25 letter, also raised concerns around the structure of the proposed deal with Samara. "In response you have clarified that Amazon would “facilitate” discussions, with your exact role and relationship with Samara Capital being unclear. Amazon should act with transparency in matters of funding of an Indian listed company,” it said. The independent directors also highlighted that foreign investment in multi-brand retail is impermissible without government approval and any investment by Samara must be transparent, and not an indirect investment by Amazon contrary to the rules. "For this purpose, it is necessary that the Amazon / Samara transparently disclose to us and the authorities, the ultimate beneficial owners / contributories to the Samara fund in India through various layers. Further, Amazon should confirm that it has not directly or indirectly funded any amount to Samara," it said. The independent directors said FRL has a clear urgency of funds, and Amazon had instead suggested an extensive due diligence exercise as an alternative and “have not even bothered to provide any timeline for funding, despite us specifically asking you to provide clarity on this point”. Meanwhile, in a separate development, FRL which operates multi-brand retail chains such as Big Bazaar, Easyday and Heritage, among others, has approached the Supreme Court requesting to pass a direction to its lenders from declaring the company as a non-performing asset in case of a default of Rs 3,495 crore loan dues. Last month, it had missed the due date for the payment of Rs 3,494.56 crore to banks and lenders as it could not sell assets due to its ongoing litigation with Amazon, impacting its monetisation plans. It has time till the end of this month to make the payment. According to the research, a northward shift of the tropical rain belt over the eastern Africa and the <keyword id="12350" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Ocean">Indian Ocean</keyword> could result in "intensified flooding in southern India," and may impact global biodiversity and food security by 2100. The scientists, including those from the University of California (UC) Irvine in the US, said this "sweeping shift" of the rain belt was disguised in previous studies that provided a global average of the influence of climate change. However, they said climate change caused the atmosphere to heat up by different amounts over Asia and the North Atlantic Ocean. The current study highlighted the drastic alterations to come over future decades in India by isolating the response in the Eastern and Western Hemisphere zones. "In Asia, projected reductions in aerosol emissions, glacier melting in the <keyword id="52569" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="himalayas">Himalayas</keyword> and loss of snow cover in northern areas brought on by climate change will cause the atmosphere to heat up faster than in other regions," said study co-author James Randerson from UC Irvine. "We know that the rain belt shifts toward this heating, and that its northward movement in the Eastern Hemisphere is consistent with these expected impacts of climate change," Randerson said. According to the scientists, the study combined the engineering approach of system's thinking with data analytics and climate science to reveal subtle manifestations of global warming on regional rainfall extremes. Sydney, <keyword id="6354645" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="researchers">Researchers</keyword> have found new evidence about the <keyword id="1308746" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="positive-role">positive role</keyword> of <keyword id="3124830" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="androgens">androgens</keyword>, commonly thought of as male sex hormones but also found at lower levels in women, in breast cancer treatment. In normal breast development, <keyword id="10620878" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="estrogen-stimulates">estrogen stimulates</keyword> and androgen inhibits growth at puberty and throughout adult life. Abnormal estrogen activity is responsible for the majority of breast cancers, but the role of androgen activity in this disease has been controversial. The new research published in the journal <keyword id="298915" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nature-Medicine">Nature Medicine</keyword> showed that androgens have potential for treatment of <keyword id="3157762" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="estrogen-receptor-positive-breast-cancer">estrogen receptor positive breast cancer</keyword>. A cancer is called estrogen receptor positive if it has receptors for estrogen, according to Breastcancer.org. Using cell-line and patient-derived models, the global team, including researchers at the <keyword id="171120" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Adelaide">University of Adelaide</keyword> and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Australia, demonstrated that androgen receptor activation by natural androgen or a new androgenic drug had potent anti-tumour activity in all estrogen receptor positive breast cancers, even those resistant to current standard-of-care treatments. In contrast, androgen receptor inhibitors had no effect. "This work has immediate implications for women with metastatic estrogen receptor positive breast cancer, including those resistant to current forms of endocrine therapy," said lead researcher Theresa Hickey, Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide. "We provide compelling new experimental evidence that androgen receptor stimulating drugs can be more effective than existing (e.g. Tamoxifen) or new (e.g. Palbociclib) standard-of-care treatments and, in the case of the latter, can be combined to enhance growth inhibition," said Wayne Tilley, Director of the Dame Roma Mitchell Cancer Research Laboratories, Adelaide Medical School, University of Adelaide. Androgens were historically used to treat breast cancer, but knowledge of hormone receptors in breast tissue was rudimentary at the time and the treatment's efficacy misunderstood. Androgen therapy was discontinued due to virilising side effects and the advent of anti-estrogenic endocrine therapies. While endocrine therapy is standard-of-care for estrogen receptor positive breast cancer, resistance to these drugs is the major cause of breast cancer mortality. "The new insights from this study should clarify the widespread confusion over the role of the androgen receptor in estrogen receptor driven breast cancer," said Elgene Lim, a breast oncologist and Head of the Connie Johnson Breast Cancer Research Lab at the Garvan Institute. "Given the efficacy of this treatment strategy at multiple stages of disease in our study, we hope to translate these findings into clinical trials as a new class of endocrine therapy for breast cancer." Male sex hormones could help in treating breast cancer, says new study

Days after getting the Drugs Controller General of India's nod for restricted emergency use of India's first indigenously-made <keyword id="8624004" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus-vaccine">coronavirus vaccine</keyword>, Bharat Biotech had applied to the drug regulator for permission to start Phase 1 and 2 trials of their nasal coronavirus vaccine. The nasal vaccine is different from the intramuscular vaccine which recently got approval, as it is non-invasive, needle-free, doesn't require trained healthcare workers, eliminates needle-associated risks, suits children and adults and has scalable manufacturing. Clinical trials of Bharat Biotech's 'BBV154' - a novel adenovirus vectored intranasal vaccine for coronavirus -- will be conducted at various locations, a top source privy to the development told IANS. The vaccine will be single-dosed. According to the firm, an intranasal vaccine stimulates a broad immune response at the site of infection, in the nasal mucosa, which is essential for blocking both infection and transmission of Covid-19. The vaccine has demonstrated protective efficacy in mice and hamsters. Mice and hamsters immunised with its single-dose were conferred superior protection against SARS-CoV-2 challenge, "more so than one or two intramuscular immunisations of the same vaccine and dose". "Thus, intranasal immunisation of ChAd-SARS-CoV-2-S can create an immune response in the nose, which is the point of entry for the virus, thereby protecting against disease, infection and transmission," Bharat Biotech said in a statement. On January 3, two intramuscular vaccines - Bharat Biotech's Covaxin and Oxford-AstraZeneca's Covishield manufactured by Serum Institute of India - were approved for restricted emergency use and have been administered to over three lakh people till now. Both are two-dose vaccines. While the full efficacy of Covaxin is yet to be determined, it was given go-ahead by the DCGI citing 'public interest'. Covaxin is an indigenously developed vaccine by Bharat Biotech, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Public health experts believe that intranasal vaccines for coronavirus, administered through the nose rather than muscles, can be a potential gamechanger in India's fight against the coronavirus pandemic. New Delhi, <keyword id="6367091" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="petrol">Petrol</keyword> and <keyword id="6397171" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="diesel-prices">diesel prices</keyword> rose again by 25 paise per litre each on Tuesday after oil marketing companies decided to continue the upward price revision of <keyword id="389939" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="auto-fuels">auto fuels</keyword> in the wake of enlarging under recovery on sale of the two products. The <keyword id="6374534" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="increase">increase</keyword> in the pump price of petrol and diesel has come on a day when global oil prices gave a glimpse of softening with crude falling below $ 55 a barrel after almost a week of hovering above that range. With Tuesday's increase, petrol is being sold at ₹85.20 a litre in Delhi from the previous day price of ₹84.95 a litre. Similarly, diesel prices also increased to ₹75.38 a litre, up from previous day's level of ₹75.13 a litre. Across the country as well pump price of petrol and diesel increased but the quantum of the rise varied from state to state depending on the level of taxation on the two petroleum products. The last two days of increase in pump prices in petrol and diesel has taken its price to record levels across the country in all major metro cities and other towns. The last time the retail price of auto fuels were closer to current levels was on October 4, 2018 when crude prices had shot up up $ 80 a barrel. The current price rise is largely on account of steep increase in the central taxes of petrol and diesel as crude prices are still below $ 55 a barrel. Only in Delhi, the retail price of diesel is still below record levels reached early last year when the state government had substantially raised VAT on it to boost its pandemic affected revenue. Auto fuel price rise was on hold for the last three days after petrol and diesel prices had increased on two successive days last week on Wednesday and Thursday taking gasoline to new record high levels in Delhi and several other places in the country. It had risen on two days in the week prior to last week as well. OMCs ran out of patience on Wednesday as global crude prices have risen sharply lately taking benchmark <keyword id="144508" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brent">Brent</keyword> crude price to over $57 a barrel now and rising. The rise is primarily on account of <keyword id="50996" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saudi-Arabia">Saudi Arabia</keyword>'s decision on unilateral production cuts to balance oil prices on pandemic affected demand reduction in an oversupplied market. Petrol price was very close to breaching the all-time high level of ₹84 a litre (reached on October 4, 2018) when it touched ₹83.71 a litre on December 7, 2020. But the march had been halted ever since then with no price revision by the OMCs. Oil companies executives said petrol and diesel prices may increase further in coming days as retail prices may have to be balanced in line with the global developments to prevent the OMCs from making losses on the sale of auto fuels. Fuel prices at record high: Petrol crosses ₹85 in Delhi, diesel above ₹75

<keyword id="6354552" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hyderabad">Hyderabad</keyword>, <keyword id="149108" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword>, makers of India's first indigenous vaccine for Covid-19, has advised people not to take 'Covaxin' if they have allergies, fever, bleeding disorder, are on blood thinners, immune-compromised, or are on <keyword id="6375143" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="medicines">medicines</keyword> that affect the immune system. The Hyderabad-based vaccine-maker, in a fact sheet for recipients and caregivers, said that even pregnant and nursing women should not take the vaccine. People who have taken another Covid-19 vaccine or are suffering from any other serious health-related issues should also not take Covaxin. Bharat Biotech reiterated that the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) had authorised the "restricted use of Covaxin under clinical trial mode". "Individuals who are prioritised under the public health programme of the <keyword id="46535" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Health-ministry">Health Ministry</keyword> will be covered under this endeavour. Informing the individuals about the offer to vaccinate them with Covaxin will rest with the respective government programme officials. Those offered Covaxin at pre-specified booths will have the option to receive or reject the administration of the vaccine," says the fact sheet that surfaced on Tuesday. Company sources told IANS that the fact sheet was issued last week. "As with any new medicine, this vaccine will be closely monitored to allow quick identification of any new safety information," said Bharat Biotech. The vaccine-maker said that in phase 1 and 2 clinical trials, Covaxin has demonstrated the ability to produce antibodies against Covid-19. However, the clinical efficacy of Covaxin is yet to be established and it is still being studied in phase 3 clinical trial. In phase 1 and 2 trials, 680 people were administered two doses each of Covaxin. The phase 3 clinical trial with 25,800 participants is on. The first dose was administered to them on January 6. In the ongoing clinical trial, Covaxin has shown to generate immunity following two doses given four weeks apart, the firm said. Covaxin, which Bharat Biotech developed in collaboration with the <keyword id="6364555" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Council-of-Medical-Research">Indian Council of Medical Research</keyword> and <keyword id="6375751" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-institute-of-virology">National Institute of Virology</keyword>, and 'Covishield', developed by <keyword id="30725" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Oxford-university">Oxford University</keyword> and pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and manufactured by <keyword id="95879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword> at Pune, have been cleared by the DCGI for emergency use. Both the vaccines are in use during the nationwide immunisation programme launched on January 16. The move to include Covaxin even before the publication of data from its phase 3 trial had come under criticism from some quarters. However, the regulator had defended the decision by saying that both the vaccines were totally safe. Over 500 adverse reactions were reported from across the country during two days of immunisation. Two deaths were also reported but the government clarified that these were not related to vaccination. Bharat Biotech said in case of any Serious Adverse Events (SAV), vaccine recipients will be provided medically recognised standards of care in government-designated and authorised centers/hospitals. Compensation for serious adverse event will be paid by Bharat Biotech International Limited and if SAV is proved to be casually related to the vaccine. The compensation amount will be determined by the ICMR Central Ethics Committee, it added. Bharat Biotech warns that Covaxin should not be used in case of allergies, fever and poor immunity

Shanta who headed the <keyword id="171643" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cancer-Institute">Cancer Institute</keyword> (WIA) here, popularly known as <keyword id="808850" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adyar-Cancer-Institute">Adyar Cancer Institute</keyword> died at a private hospital on Tuesday early morning. A Padma Vibuhshan, Padma Bhushan, Padama Shri and Ramon Magsaysay awardee Shanta, 93 was admitted to a private hospital on Monday night as she was unwell. Her end came on Tuesday early morning. Expressing shock at Shanta's death, <keyword id="6356629" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil">Tamil</keyword> Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami said with her dedicated service she expanded and moderninsed the hospital that was started with 12 beds. The hospital gave free <keyword id="6355291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cancer">cancer</keyword> treatment for the poor, the Chief Minister said. He said Shanta was instrumental in creating public awareness on the importance of periodic testing for detection of cancer. Palaniswami said the <keyword id="6359479" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu-government">Tamil Nadu government</keyword> honoured Shanta with Avvaiyar Award in 2013. Terming Shanta's death as an irreplacable loss for medical fraternity and Tamil Nadu, Palaniswami said she will be given police salute at time of her final rites. Condoling Shanta's demise PMK Founder S. Ramadoss said when it comes to cancer the name that immediately comes to our mind is Shanta. Born into a distinguished scientific family - her immediate grand uncle (C.V.Raman) and uncle (S. Chandrasekar)- Noble Laureates. She graduated (M.B.B.S.) in 1949, D.G.O. in 1952 and M.D, in Obstetrics &amp; Gynecology in 1955. In April 1955, she joined the fledgling Cancer Institute, established in 1954 by the Womens' Indian Association Cancer Relief Fund, as its Resident Medical Officer. PMK's Ramadoss said Shanta joined the Cancer Institute preferring over the Assistant Surgeon's Post in the Women &amp; Children's Hospital, Madras, to which she had been selected by the Madras Public Service Commission. Since then, Shanta's entire professional life was dedicated to the mission of organising care of cancer patients, the study of the disease, its prevention and control, the generation of specialists and scientists in different aspects of Oncologic Sciences. She has played an important role along with Dr. Krishnamurthi in the development of the Cancer Institute (WIA) from a cottage hospital of 12 beds to a major comprehensive Cancer Centre of national and international stature. She has played a pioneering role in all the achievements of the Institute. Shanta was on WHO Advisory Committee on Cancer till March 2005. She was also Convener of the State Advisory Board on Cancer. She has been the Chairman of the INDO-US Collaborative Group on Lymphoid Neoplasias (Indian Chapter), member of many ICMR Committees, member of the ICMR Task Force on Registries and member of the Syndicate of the Anna University. She was President of the Indian Society of Oncology (88-90), President of the Asian &amp; Pacific Federation of Organisations for cancer control (97-99) and President of the 15th Asian &amp; Pacific Cancer Conference (1999). She has participated in a number of Scientific International Collaborative Programmes. According to the Cancer Institute, Shanta has published over 95 papers in national and international journals, contributed chapters in Oncology books, delivered many prestigious orations and participated in many international and national conferences.
