"I simply could not work with him any longer," Maris said. "We have very, very different ideas about how to treat people, and this was a long time coming," he told Axios.<br /><br />Drummond was one of the most powerful executives at Alphabet, having joined in 2002 when the company was still a privately held search engine by the name of Google.<br /><br />Alphabet announced Friday that Drummond <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alphabet-chief-legal-officer-david-drummond-is-leaving-the-company-2020-1">will retire at the end of January</a> following allegations that he had relationships with subordinates at the company and the reported launch of a board investigation into Alphabet's handling of sexual-misconduct claims.<br /><br />Maris, who is now a founding partner at the VC firm Section 32, started Google's in-house <keyword id="6357097" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Venture-Capital">venture capital</keyword> group, initially known as Google Ventures. The group was overseen by Drummond, among his various duties. <br /><br />Maris' comments are a change of tone from when he left GV in 2016. At the time, Maris <a href="https://www.vox.com/2016/8/10/12434672/google-ventures-bill-maris-q-a" target="_blank">told Recode he was leaving "because everything is great."</a><br /><br />"It's mission accomplished for me," Maris said in a Q&amp;A with the publication. <br /><br />On Friday, Maris turned to "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" to refer to the news of Drummond's departure, in his statement to Axios. <br /><br />"At an end, your rule is. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>"Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakes" is coming out December 18.&#xa0;<p>That's a long time for a "Star Wars" fan to wait. And it's been a while since the last "Star Wars" movie came out in 2008. So to hold you over, let's relive the last film in the prequel, "Revenge of the Sith," specifically the last 15 minutes of the film,&#xa0;<span>a moment Star Wars fans waited decades to witness and producers pulled out all the stops to pull off.</span></p><p>(For more "Star Wars" recaps, check out the on-going series,&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/star-wars-rewind">"Star Wars" Rewind</a>).</p><p>2005's "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" would mark the final film in the saga George Lucas would&#xa0;be involved in. "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/star-wars-making-qui-gon-jinn-obi-wan-kenobi-darth-maul-fight-2015-3">Phantom Menace</a>" and "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/star-wars-yoda-count-dooku-fight-2015-5">Attack of the Clones</a>" were fine, but for the most part "Star Wars" fans were left feeling unsatisfied. "Episode III" would hopefully&#xa0;give fans the answers they had been wanting for decades, and some redemption for Lucas.</p><p>"Revenge of the Sith" had a mature feel compared to the previous two films and captured&#xa0;the horrific fall of the Jedi. In it, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) finds himself moving closer to the dark side as Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) - who we come to learn is the Emperor, Darth Sidious - convinces Skywalker that he's the greatest Jedi of them all. This leads to Skywalker leading the rise of the Empire.</p><p>But it's the final 15 minutes of the film that set it apart from the others in the prequel.</p><p>In it, Anakin loses the light saber battle against Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and is left for dead as he burns alive on the volcanic planet of Mustafar.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The Emperor saves Anakin and what follows is something "Star Wars" fans waited decades to see - Anakin turns into Darth Vader.<p>Industrial Light and Magic's <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0171197/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1">Rob Coleman</a> was the animation director on all of the "Star Wars" prequels and he is on the commentary for the Blu-ray version of "Revenge of the Sith." He said the Darth Vader sequence was one he'd "been thinking about since I was 13 years old."</p><p>Visual effects supervisor <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004361/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1">Roger Guyett</a> described the idea behind the setting for the construction of Anakin into Vader in the commentary: "We wanted to get that interrogation look with this ridiculously hot top light," he said. "Uncomfortable and very unsympathetic."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Then there was showcasing the iconic Vader mask and helmet.<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>"I love this idea of getting inside the mask," Guyett said in the commentary. "And the other touch was seeing him breath for the first time. I remember we did the shot and George came back and said, 'Just disturb the smoke enough above the mouth piece so you can see him breath for the first time."<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>But perhaps the most memorable moment was the filming of Vader when his construction is complete. <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000469/?ref_=nv_sr_1">James Earl Jones</a>, who voiced Vader in the original trilogy, returned to do the dialogue in this scene. And according to producer Rick McCallum on the commentary, Christensen was inside the Vader costume for the scene.<p>"I went to go pick up Hayden in a golf cart [to bring him to the set] and he insisted to play this," said McCallum. "He wanted to be in the suit."</p><p>The scene was shot 10 days before principal photography on "Revenge of the Sith" wrapped, and McCallum recalls the incredible sight when he got to the set with Christensen.</p><p>"There were about a thousand people on the stage," he said. "Everyone from the studio. We opened the stage doors and I let four hundred to five hundred people in, as many as we could get in. People were sitting on the floor. George did a couple of takes, Hayden got off [the set], and everyone just came up and touched him."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>"Most of these people honestly had gotten into the film business because of 'Star Wars,'" said McCallum. "It was just a great day."<p>Though Lucas took a lot of heat on the internet following the release of the prequels as many thought they didn't hold up to the original trilogy, it's hard to argue that the ending of "Revenge of the Sith" is completely satisfying.</p><p>Along with seeing the creation of Darth Vader, we see the birth of Luke and Leia Skywalker, C-3PO and R2-D2 being handed over to Captain Antilles who erases their memory in order to protect the whereabouts of the twins, and how the twins are split up to protect them from Vader ever finding them, following the death of Padmé (Natalie Portman) during child birth.</p><p>The film concludes with Kenobi giving Luke to his uncle and aunt on Tatooine, where 20 years later the Jedi master and future apprentice would find each other in "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>"I always wanted to end the movie on the twin suns, it was such a strong image in 'Episode IV,'" said Lucas in the commentary.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">About the ending to "Sith," Lucas added, "There's something very satisfying about having all the little pieces wrapped up."&#xa0;</span><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Watch Anakin Skywalker become Darth Vader:</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div></div></span></p><p class="embed-spacer">&#xa0;</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: This article contains spoilers for "<keyword id="12521501" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="obi-wan-kenobi" source="Orion">Obi-Wan Kenobi</keyword>" on Disney+ </li><li>The new "<keyword id="11962336" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="star-wars" source="Orion">Star Wars</keyword>" series premiered with two episodes on Friday.</li></ul><p>The first episode of <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/obi-wan-kenobi">"Obi-Wan Kenobi"</a> featured the surprise return of a beloved "Star Wars" character.</p><p>The new Disney+ series follows Obi-Wan Kenobi (<keyword id="12521503" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ewan-mcgregor" source="Orion">Ewan McGregor</keyword>) <a href="https://www.insider.com/obi-wan-kenobi-what-to-know-before-watching-disney-show-2021-11">after the events of "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith,"</a> in which the Jedi knights — warriors who protect the world from evil — are wiped out by their nemeses, the Sith. By the time we see Obi-Wan in the new show, he is one of the few Jedi to survive the massacre and is trying to hide from the Sith. </p><p>It had already been announced that "Obi-Wan Kenobi" would bring back many well-known characters from the "Star Wars" universe, such as the infamous villain Darth Vader, who is being played by <a href="https://www.insider.com/star-wars-ewan-mcgregor-hayden-christensen-fans-brought-them-back-2022-5">Hayden Christensen for the first time in 17 years.</a> Vader's relatives Owen, Beru, and the villain's son Luke Skywalker were also teased in the trailer.</p><p>However, "Star Wars" fans were treated to another major character in the first two episodes of the series: A young <keyword id="14046412" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="princess-leia" source="Orion">Princess Leia</keyword> played by child actor Vivien Lyra Blair.</p><h2>Princess Leia is one of the first major "Star Wars" characters introduced in "A New Hope" in 1977</h2><div type="image" title="Princess Leia" height="1200" width="1600" msid="91834237" hostid="261"></div><p>Princess Leia was first introduced in "A New Hope," the first "Star Wars" movie in 1977, and played by the late Carrie Fisher. Leia was a senator who was secretly working with Rebellion to take down the evil Empire led by Vader and Darth Sidious (Ian McDiarmid) in the original trilogy. </p><p>In the first movie, she sets her droids on a mission to contact Obi-Wan (played by Alec Guinness) to help the Rebellion, which set off the chain of events in the trilogy. She eventually works with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and bounty hunters Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) to stop the Empire.</p><p>In the sequel "The Empire Strikes Back," it is revealed that Leia and Luke are twins, and their father is Vader. Vader eventually turns to the good side in the third movie, "Return of the Jedi," and the Empire is defeated.</p><p>"Obi-Wan Kenobi" is set before all of this occurs but <a href="https://www.insider.com/star-wars-star-ewan-mcgregor-found-it-difficult-filming-prequels-2022-5">set after the prequel movies which depict how Vader went from being a Jedi to a Sith Lord.</a></p><p>In "Obi-Wan Kenobi," Leia and Luke are currently being hidden from their father, who believes they died with his wife, Padme (Natalie Portman), in "Revenge of the Sith."</p><p>Leia was fostered by a senator friend of Padme, Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits), which is where we find her halfway through the premiere episode. This is a complete surprise as the character was not mentioned during the press tour or in any trailers for the show.</p><p>Blair plays the young princess as a rebellious but respectful 10-year-old, much like Leia is as an adult. However, in the first episode, she is kidnapped, forcing Obi-Wan to come out of hiding to save her. This means Leia may be part of the story for most of the season, which is great for fans who are already loving the character.</p><h2>Fans are already tweeting about Leia, played by Vivien Lyra Blair</h2><p>While the first season of "The Mandalorian" was praised for its story-telling and beautiful visuals, most fans were talking about the little alien that was brought along the ride, <a href="https://www.insider.com/mandalorian-baby-yoda-concept-art-2019-11">Baby Yoda, also known as Grogu.</a></p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/best-baby-yoda-tweets-memes-the-mandalorian-2019-11">There were memes</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/saturday-night-live-baby-yoda-snl-kyle-mooney-terrifying-makeup-2019-12">"SNL" sketches</a>, and fans seemed to adore the <a href="https://www.insider.com/mandalorian-episode-the-tragedy-tweets-memes-2020-12">father-son dynamic between Grogu and the lead character Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal).</a></p><p>And it seems we may be in store for a similar outpouring of support for young Leia, who Obi-Wan is attempting to save in episode two. He's somewhere riding around on a velociraptor with one arm," Jackson added, referencing his character, Ray, from Steven Spielberg's 1993 film.  </p><p>Windu was last seen in 2005's "Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith." He had his arm chopped off by Anakin Skywalker before being electrocuted and hurled out a window by Darth Sidious never to be seen again. </p><div type="image" title="Star Wars Ep III Samuel L. Jackson Mace Windu" height="1140" width="2721" msid="90249121" hostid="261"></div><p>Becoming more serious, Jackson pointed out that it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for Windu to have survived. </p><p>"There's a huge history of people with one hand returning in 'Star Wars," Jackson told Horowitz when asked if he should hold out hope for a future Windu sighting.</p><p>"The only person I've ever said that to, about coming back, was Bryce Dallas Howard because I just did a movie with her and she directs episodes of 'The Mandalorian,'" Jackson revealed.</p><p>The "Jurassic World" star has directed a combined three episodes of "The Mandalorian" and the more recent "Star Wars" series, "The Book of Boba Fett." </p><div type="image" title="Josh Horowitz and Samuel L. Hook me up."</p><p>This isn't the first time Jackson has been eager to pick up the lightsaber again. The actor previously said his character <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20190204063316/https://screenrant.com/star-wars-mace-windu-movie-samuel-jackson/">wasn't dead during 2017's Star Wars Celebration event</a>.</p><p>The upcoming "Kenobi" series, set a decade after the events of "Revenge of the Sith," features the return of Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen as their "Star Wars" prequel film characters, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, respectively. </p><div type="image" title="Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars" height="787" width="1819" msid="90249125" hostid="261"></div><p>We know Windu died at some point since Jackson reprised the role briefly as a Force Ghost voice in 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker." But since the majority of remaining Jedi went into hiding after "Revenge of the Sith," Lucasfilm could always rework its canon with Windu healing and laying low for a few years before resurfacing.</p><p>But any potential return may be tough.</p><p>Jackson is currently working on his upcoming Marvel series, "Secret Invasion," alongside Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, and Ben Mendelsohn, where he reprises his role as Nick Fury. He's also set to appear in next year's "Captain Marvel" sequel.</p><p>The actor's AppleTV+ series, "The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey," is now streaming.</p>

The big selling point that convinced this fan to tune in was that the show revisits the moment Emperor Palpatine executes "Order 66" and shows it from the point-of-view of two other big "Star Wars" characters.</p><p>If you're not already heading to hit the play button right now, here's why that's a big deal.</p><p>"Order 66" is the moment where the Clones turn on the Republic and are ordered to execute every Jedi. Darth Maul gets a great hallway sequence where he gets to put all of his powers on display. Season seven, episode 11 has a few combat moments you'll want to watch over again. </p><p>In an <a href="https://www.etonline.com/media/videos/star-wars-dave-filoni-on-the-clone-wars-finale-and-live-action-ahsoka-145901">interview with Entertainment Tonight's Ash Crossan</a>, executive producer and writer Dave Filoni said the episodes were written so if you never watched an episode of the animated series, you could still tune in and appreciate the story line.</p><p>"The way I wrote these four was intended that if you actually had never seen any other episodes of 'Clone Wars,' these four episodes should be enjoyable on their own. Technically, Tano isn't a Jedi anymore after leaving the order during season five. </p><p>Darth Maul survived his fall at the end of "The Phantom Menace." (You may have realized this if you watched the "Solo" spinoff film.) If you're a fan of the character, early seasons of the show dig into his backstory and his journey to seek revenge on both Kenobi and, later, his old master Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious. All 'Star Wars' fans need to watch the last 4 episodes of Disney's animated 'Clone Wars' show even if you've never seen it before

<p>Disney <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/new-star-wars-characters-names-2014-12">released the names of a few new Star Wars characters</a> on Thursday.</p>
<p>One of them is the name of the bad guy, the scary-looking dude with a tri-blade lightsaber that we saw in the teaser trailer that came out a few weeks ago.</p>
<p>Him:</p>
<p><span class="KonaFilter image-container"><span data-post-image="" class="image on-image"></span><p></p></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It turns out his name is Kylo Ren.</span></p>
<p>But there's something wrong with that name. Kylo Ren is using a red lightsaber, which is what the Sith, the evil Jedi who follow the Dark Side of the Force, use. But all Sith also have the title "Darth" in front of their name. (Think Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Darth Sidious, and Darth Tyranus from earlier movies.)</p>
<p>So why isn't he Darth Kylo Ren?</p>
<p>Weird!</p>
<p>Let's speculate a bit.</p>
<p>It's possible Kylo Ren isn't a Sith quite yet. The Sith rules say there can only be two at a time, the master and the apprentice. When one dies, the other one becomes the master and finds a new apprentice. But at the end of Return of the Jedi, both the master (Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine) and his apprentice (Darth Vader) die, effectively destroying the Sith.</p>
<p>So it's very possible that Kylo Ren is the first of the new generation of Sith and has yet to adopt the "Darth" title.&#xa0;</p>
<p>Or it's possible the Sith are gone for good and the Dark Side followers just call themselves whatever they please.</p>
<p>Remember, the title of the new Star Wars movie is "The Force Awakens," which could mean a lot of people across the galaxy are just discovering they can use the Force. Some of those will probably fall to the Dark Side like our friend Kylo Ren.</p>

There's Something Fishy About The Name Of The New 'Star Wars' Villain

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Lucasfilm</span></p><p class="caption">C3PO understands more than six million forms of communication.</p></div><p></p></div></div>In 1977, <em>Star Wars</em> unleashed a brand of Hollywood blockbuster that had never been seen before. It wowed audiences worldwide and became a modern classic.</p><p>Almost 40 years (and 350 films, books, TV shows, comics and videogames) later, the <em>Star Wars</em> galaxy holds permanent real estate in the pop cultural mass imagination.</p><p>In anticipation of <em>Episode VII: The Force Awakens</em>, we've done some intergalactic etymology to discover the origins of the character names, cultures and languages from that very familiar galaxy far, far away.</p><h2>Influences</h2><p>To understand where <em>Star Wars</em> stands in the pop culture pantheon, we must first acknowledge the stories that influenced the films' creator, George Lucas. Like most boys growing up in 1950s and 60s America, Lucas was raised on Westerns, campy sci-fi serials like <em>Flash Gordon</em> and <em>Buck Rogers</em>, epic <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> fiction novels like Edgar Rice Burroughs' <em>A Princess of Mars</em> and Frank Herbert's <em>Dune</em>, and Japanese samurai films. These influences are clearly visible in Lucas' films - from the good guys dressed in white and bad guys dressed in black, to the desert planets, robots, laser guns and spaceships, to the venerable sword-wielding mercenaries following Taoist philosophy.</p><p>Tying these disparate cultural elements together is the work of mythologist Joseph Campbell, whose book, <em>The Hero with the Thousand Faces</em>, claims that all cultures throughout time have told and retold the same essential myths. Reading Campbell's book helped Lucas build his characters and story on time-tested archetypes and mythic structures. With <em>Star Wars</em>, Lucas set out to retell the timeless "hero's journey" myth, but in a very new way.</p><h2>Name Origins</h2><p>Big themes like good versus evil, light versus dark, and nature versus technology are woven into every detail of the Star Wars universe, even the characters' names:</p><p><strong>Luke Skywalker:</strong> Taken at face value, the name <em>Luke</em> - which derives from the Greek <em>Loukas</em> meaning "a man from Lucania" (a region in Italy) - has no mythic undertones. However, it also resembles the Greek <em>leukos</em> meaning <em>light</em> - quite significant when one battles the dark side. It's also hard to avoid noticing the similarity to George Lucas' own name; perhaps it was his way of putting himself in his hero's shoes. In early drafts of the <em>Star Wars</em> script, Luke's surname was <em>Starkiller</em>. Thank goodness Lucas replaced it with the much more poetic and evocative <em>Skywalker</em>.</p><p><strong>Princess Leia Organa:</strong> Leia's name sounds a lot like <em>Princess Dejah Thoris</em> from the <em>John Carter of Mars</em> novels written by Edgar Rice Burroughs in the 1930s. This is probably not a coincidence considering that young George Lucas grew up on these sci-fi stories. Leia's surname, <em>Organa</em>, reflects that in the conflict between the natural world and the evil mechanized Empire, she stands firmly on the side of nature.</p><p><strong>Han Solo:</strong> Continuing with mythological <em>ur</em>-names, Han is an archaic form of John (or Hans, Jan, Jean…). The pop-culture precedent for the surname <em>Solo</em> is probably <em>Napoleon Solo</em>, a debonaire spy from the 1960s American TV series <em>The Man from U.N.C.L.E.</em></p><p><strong>Chewbacca:</strong> The inspiration for Han Solo's right-hand Wookie was actually Lucas' dog, an Alaskan Malamute named Indiana (yes, he also inspired <em>that</em> character). And where does the name Chewbacca come from? We don't know for sure, but it is suspiciously similar to the Russian word for dog: <em>??????</em>.</p><p><strong>Jedi:</strong> The name for the order of knights who protect the galaxy from evil likely has more than one source. Sci-fi geeks will likely claim that the word was inspired by the lords of Barsoom in Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars novels, who are addressed by the honorific <em>Jed</em> or <em>Jeddak</em>.</p><p>On the other hand, many film buffs contend that <em>Jedi</em> is a shout-out to Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa. Kurosawa's biggest hits stateside were his samurai films, and the Japanese word for this kind of costume drama is <em>jidai-geki</em>. One could consider this a coincidence if it weren't for the fact that Lucas has repeatedly cited Kurosawa as an influence. He's even stated that the two bickering peasants in Kurosawa's <em>The Hidden Fortress</em> were his inspiration for R2-D2 and C-3PO.</p><p><strong>Obi Wan Kenobi:</strong> Like the word <em>Jedi</em>, this is another homage to the samurai films of Akira Kurosawa and to Japanese culture. An "obi' is the sash used to tie a kimono, "ken" is Japanese for sword and "wan" sounds somewhat like the Japanese honorific "san".</p><p>Still not convinced that Obi Wan's name is a nod to Kurosawa? Well prepare to be trivia slammed: before casting Sir Alec Guinness in the role, Lucas approached Japanese superstar Toshiro Mifune to play Obi Wan. Mifune starred in many of Kurosawa's <em>jidai-geki</em>, including <em>The Hidden Fortress</em> and <em>Seven Samurai</em>. When Mifune turned down the offer, Lucas offered him the part of Darth Vader, but the actor was simply not interested in being in a "film for children."</p><p><strong>Darth Vader:</strong> the most prominent rumor about the origin of Vader's name is that it's Dutch for "dark father." However, in Dutch that would actually be <em>Donker Vader</em> which is the least scary name for a Sith lord ever. However, Lucas himself claimed that the name is a combination of two phrases that seethe evil: "death water" and "dark father." This doesn't mean that the vader-father connection was deliberate foreshadowing. In early drafts of the <em>Empire Strikes Back script</em>, Vader was <em>NOT</em> Luke's father, so Lucas couldn't have had that planned when he named the character years earlier.</p><p>Another theory, if the naming convention of the other Sith is any indication - Sidious (Insidious), Maul, Grievous - Vader might be short for "invader," thus "Dark/Death Invader."</p><p><strong>Yoda:</strong> The origin of Yoda's name is shrouded in mystery, but there are two plausible sources:<em>yoddha</em>, the Sanskrit word for <em>warrior</em>, or the Hebrew <em>yodea</em> which means <em>one who knows</em>. Two interesting theories these are, hmm?</p><p><strong>R2-D2:</strong> During a late night editing session of his previous film, <em>American Graffiti</em>, Lucas overheard sound editor Walter Murch ask an assistant for "Reel 2, Dialog Track 2." Murch, being super efficient, abbreviated that to "R-2-D-2." Lucas, who was in the middle of the Star Wars script at the time, commented that R2-D2 would make a great name and promptly integrated it into the script.</p><p><strong>Droid™:</strong> In the parlance of the Star Wars galaxy, "droid" means any robot, whether it's shaped like a trashcan or a person. Here on Earth, it's easy to guess that "droid" is an abridgement of "android," an anthropomorphic robot. Not so simple, however, is the legal status of the word. Right before Verizon released their Droid line of smartphones in 2009, Lucasfilm successfully trademarked the word "droid," not as a friendly robot that follows you around, but as a "wireless communications device." As a result, Verizon pays Lucasfilm a license fee to use the word. Clever, Lucasfilm, very clever.</p><p><strong>Jawa:</strong> These diminutive desert traders share their name with the oldest urban settlement in Jordan. Located in the remote Eastern Jordanian desert, Jawa was built over 5000 years ago.</p><p><strong>Ewok:</strong> Everyone's favorite arboreal space teddy bears were named after the <em>Miwok</em>, one of the indigenous tribes of Northern California. The Endor forest scenes in <em>Return of the Jedi</em>were filmed in indigenous Miwok territory.</p><h2>The Languages</h2><p>Unlike the systematic languages created for <em>The Lord of the Rings</em> and <em>Star Trek</em>, the languages in <em>Star Wars</em> do not have functional grammar, vocabulary and syntax. Instead, <em>Star Wars'</em> sound designer Ben Burtt approached the invention of alien languages in much the same way as the rest of the films' sound effects. They are evocative, atmospheric and merely hint at fully-developed fictional worlds. Instead of constructing alien languages from scratch, he riffed on real indigenous languages from all over the world:</p><p><strong>Huttese:</strong> The most-spoken fictional language in the films, Huttese was based on the Incan language <em>Quechua</em>. Burtt mostly took the sounds of words as a jumping off point, but some Quechua words did make it into Huttese (although he ignored their original meanings). Huttese is predominantly heard on Tatooine and is spoken by many characters including Greedo, and Jabba the Hutt and his entourage.</p><p><strong>Jawaese:</strong> The language spoken by the Jawas was inspired by Zulu, as well as a few other African languages. After he recorded actors speaking the new invented words, Burtt sped up the tape to create the Jawas' signature high-pitched voices.</p><p><strong>Ewokese:</strong> The language spoken by the Ewoks is actually a pidgin of several Mongolic languages including Tibetan, Nepali and Kalmyk.</p><h2>The locations</h2><p>The Star Wars films may not actually be galactic, but they are undoubtedly international.
