<p>Founder Darian Shirazi, who started the company as <keyword id="1776777" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fwix">Fwix</keyword> a few years ago, was Facebook's first intern and worked for the social network for a year and a half.</p>
<p>So you'd think American Express would give his company a corporate card, right?</p>
<p>Not so, Shirazi told us. He had to personally guarantee the account to get a card.</p>
<p>American Express doesn't comment on individual clients, but this is a pretty common story we hear from startup founders. Because startups generally lack a financial history and lose money in their early years, it's hard for them to establish the kind of credit history that lenders like to see.</p>
<p>Still, surely they must have changed their mind after deciding to invest in Radius, right?</p>
<p> “We are impressed by Radius’ dedication to understanding what makes small businesses successful," American Express executive Harshul Sanghi said in a statement announcing the investment. "As Radius continues to build its comprehensive index of information on small businesses, we believe they offer a fantastic opportunity to efficiently understand the needs of the small business owner.”</p>
<p>Unless they need a business card, that is. Shirazi says he's still personally on the hook for to AmEx.</p>

Facebook's First Intern Has A Startup That American Express Invested Millions In

The combined company will operate under the name Radius, but will rely heavily on the products and customer bases of both firms.</p><p>"We're excited about this because it will create the largest number of customers, largest revenue base and really provide a company that is at scale in B2B data and intelligence," said Radius CEO Darian Shirazi, who's set to become executive chairman of the combined company when the deal closes. </p><p>"The only other major player in this space we believe is Salesforce Einstein, and we're excited to really give them a run for their money," he said. </p><p>Radius has historically worked with US companies such as Sam's Club and MetLife to help them reach potential customers. Leadspace, meanwhile, uses its global footprint and artificial intelligence to help customers including Microsoft and Hewlett Packard <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="enterprise">Enterprise</keyword> connect with other businesses.</p><p>"Leadspace and Radius fit very nicely together. We actually both have the same vision in terms of bringing data intelligence to B2B sales and marketing organizations," said Leadspace CEO Doug Bewsher, who will become CEO of the combined company. </p><p>Shirazi and Bewsher declined to share the terms of the deal, but they insisted that the combined value will be "big." </p><p>Radius was last valued at more than $500 million in 2015, which Shirazi <a href="http://fortune.com/2015/07/29/radius-50-million-predictive-marketing/">confirmed to Fortune</a> at the time. Leadspace has never publicly disclosed its valuation, but the company had raised a total of $59 million as of late last year. </p><p>"It's reasonable to think there could be an IPO in the next couple of years," Shirazi said. </p><h2><span>The new Radius has close ties to its big rival, Salesforce </span></h2><p>While Shirazi and Bewsher have set their sights on beating out Salesforce, both CEOs have links to the cloud giant.</p><p>Before heading Leadspace, Bewsher was Salesforce's chief marketing officer. Meanwhile, Salesforce Ventures invested in Radius, and the startup's service can be deployed within Salesforce's platform.</p><p>But both Shirazi and Bewsher's experiences go beyond Salesforce. </p><p>Shirazi started out as an intern on the engineering team at eBay before joining Facebook as one of its first 10 employees. He left after three years to start his freshman year at UC Berkeley but didn't stay long before moving on to other startups. He founded Radius in 2013.</p><p>Bewsher held a series of executive-level marketing roles before settling down at Leadspace. The company was founded in Tel Aviv in 2007 as part of what Bewsher calls "the NSA of Israel."</p><p>As CMO at both Skype and Salesforce, Bewsher got a sense of what the marketing world needs - and what he believes the biggest players in the space are getting wrong.  </p><p>"While a company like Salesforce has done some work in terms of trying to help customers figure out how this market is going to evolve, a deal like ours is going to really help solidify that," Bewsher said. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is part of a family of impressive tech leaders, founders, and CEOs - here's who they are

His sales were so impressive that eBay ended up offering him an internship for the next two summers.</p><p class="p2">Soon, Shirazi was able to build some strong connections in the Valley, and got himself hired as Facebook's first-ever intern when there were just about 12 total employees. He worked directly under Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg for nearly two years before pulling himself out to go to college.</p><p class="p2">His time at Facebook landed him more money than most 20-somethings could ever imagine, but Shirazi didn't stop there. He went on to launch a startup called Fwix, a hyperlocal news aggregator that crawled the web for local news and related content, building up a database that media companies could use to generate leads.</p><p class="p2">The company saw good traction early on, and in 2011, even got a $35 million acquisition offer from Google. Most 24-year olds would have taken the money in a beat, but Shirazi saw a bigger opportunity there.</p><p class="p2">"I felt as though if [Fwix] was good enough for Google, it's probably good enough to build something independent," Shirazi told Business Insider. "Of course, I was afraid [to decline the offer] but it was worth the risk. The juice was worth the squeeze."</p><p class="p2">After turning down Google, Shirazi pivoted his company to target all kinds of businesses instead of just media companies, turning it into a predictive marketing software company called Radius. Its software looks at millions of data signals to identify potential customers, while helping run marketing campaigns to acquire them and analyze their performance.</p><p class="p2">In the three years since its pivot, Radius has grown into one of the more popular marketing software companies, drawing top Valley investors. And on Wednesday, it announced a fresh $50 million round led by Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, joined by Jerry Yang's AME Cloud Ventures, Formation 8, and Salesforce Ventures.</p><p class="p1">Shirazi declined to disclose the valuation of his company, only saying it's between $500 million and $1 billion. He did say Radius's revenue has grown 400% in the past 12 months, doubling its valuation, which explains why the company was able to raise again just 10 months after its $54 million Series C round in September. Radius has raised a total of $125 million to date.</p><p class="p1">Shirazi said most of the money will be spent on ramping up his sales team, as he plans to make a stronger push towards more Fortune 500 companies to use his product. Shirazi hopes these efforts will lead to a wider deployment, and ultimately a bigger company.</p><p class="p1">"We want to become the de facto marketing platform for CMOs," he said.
