We came prepared to write loads about this year’s first big release and went home disappointed. Here is the remake of the original <keyword id="6368619" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Telugu-Movie">Telugu movie</keyword> <keyword id="60930" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Stalin">Stalin</keyword> (that one starred <keyword id="6359557" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Chiranjeevi">Chiranjeevi</keyword> and was directed by AR Murugadoss). But when <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> decides to remake a regional flick, it usually provides all the bells and whistles, passion and <keyword id="6355304" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="action">action</keyword>, which the audience is bound to lap up. Is Salman Khan-starrer <keyword id="6593120" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jai-Ho">Jai Ho</keyword> (earlier called Mental) woefully lacking in those departments? 
 But before we get to the critical part of it, let us have a look at the <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> figures. The numbers are good and the <keyword id="1952421" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Action-drama">action drama</keyword> seems to be well on its way to enter the coveted <keyword id="6567206" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="100-crore-club">100 crore club</keyword>. According to industry estimates, the flick has grossed a little more than Rs 70 crore in the domestic market after Day 4 (January 27) and the overseas reception has been decent as well – around Rs 22.4 crore in the <keyword id="382940" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="opening-weekend">opening weekend</keyword>. But it has failed to create the kind of dhoom <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword>’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Dhoom-3-Breaks-All-Bollywood-Movie-RecordsGives-You-Some-Dumb-Entertainment/articleshow/27853596.cms">action thriller</a> created last year, both at home and abroad. The <keyword id="1839596" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office-collections">box office collections</keyword> of <keyword id="24705" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dhoom-3">Dhoom 3</keyword> stood at Rs 170 crore-plus just after the <keyword id="2034863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="First-weekend">first weekend</keyword>, with nearly Rs 63 crore coming from the overseas markets. 
 
Made on a budget of around Rs 75 crore, Jai Ho hit about 4,500 screens in India, but flunked on the very first day. It collected Rs 17 crore nett in India on Friday (January 24), according to an official statement. However, business picked up during the <keyword id="2034866" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="R-Day-weekend">R-Day weekend</keyword> and the movie saw 80-100% occupancy at single screens in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and central India. The domestic and overseas theatrical rights of Jai Ho have been reportedly sold for $18 million. 
 
Now let us come back to the basics. Although not a financial flop, what has plagued the movie in the first place? It doesn’t lack the usual masala, of course. True to the <keyword id="2034869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="R-Day-sentiments">R-Day sentiments</keyword>, here is the <keyword id="1429841" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ex-Army-officer">ex-army officer</keyword> Jai Agnihotri (Salman), who has been chucked out because he was too intense and took too many risks. Back in civil life, he doesn’t change much and beats up the baddies with as much vigour. <keyword id="33178" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Danny-Denzongpa">Danny Denzongpa</keyword> (home minister <keyword id="2034843" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dashrat-Singh">Dashrat Singh</keyword>) and his daughter <keyword id="6508015" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sana-Khan">Sana Khan</keyword> are the root of all evil, but with Sallu Bhai around (what if he is nearing 50), no one can escape a heavy dose of action, whether you like it or no. <keyword id="2034846" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Debutante-Daisy-Shah">Debutante Daisy Shah</keyword> (Rinky) tries to add a bit of romance to the mix, but fails to look hot in spite of her see-through sarees. The rest of the cast could be easily forgotten except for <keyword id="6358125" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tabu">Tabu</keyword> (Geeta) who plays Sallu’s elder sister but has no script to deliver her role. 
 And the same goes for the entire movie. <keyword id="303" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Director">Director</keyword> <keyword id="28494" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sohail-Khan">Sohail Khan</keyword>, Salman’s brother, tried to stash in all the ‘hit’ elements without realising that they should be well integrated with an impressive storyline. Every single character stays painfully one-dimensional and we do miss Salman’s timely humour or the impish traits that made him adorable in many of the earlier hits like <keyword id="29781" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="wanted">Wanted</keyword>, <keyword id="94964" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dabangg">Dabangg</keyword>, <keyword id="518707" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dabangg-2">Dabangg 2</keyword> and <keyword id="638019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ek-Tha-Tiger">Ek Tha Tiger</keyword>. 
 The bottom line: Too much of anything is bad – be it cliché plots, action &amp; gore or the final shirt-ripping, even though you are getting a close view of Bollywood’s fittest star. Unless his character evolves suitably in the future, he may not make the cut in his <keyword id="2034878" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Action-avatar">action avatar</keyword> alone.

Through Clichés, Fails To Create A Dhoom

Filmmaker Sooraj <keyword id="40286" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="barjatya" source="Orion">Barjatya</keyword> says he is set to venture into digital space soon with at least three web series under development at his family banner Rajshri Productions. These projects will focus on family-friendly entertainment, a genre championed by the production house through films such as "Nadiya Ke Paar" (1982), "Saaransh" (1984), Salman Khan-starrers "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun" (1994) and "Hum Saath Saath Hain" (1999). Barjatya said he was inundated with many offers from leading streamers during the coronavirus pandemic to explore the digital medium. "We have been offered to make Rajshri kind of stories by all platforms. After the pandemic, families have come together. I am surprised and happy. We are in the process of starting three-four series soon." "It is in our space (family entertainers). Some are in the scripting stage, others are in the ideation stage. We will look at all of this post the release of 'Unnchai'," the 58-year-old director told PTI in an interview here. Back in 2017, Barjatya had said the production house was toying with the idea of making content for the web. Rajshri has already produced many successful TV shows like "<keyword id="11857" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="woh-rehne-waali-mehlon-ki" source="Orion">Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki</keyword>" and "Pyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara". Currently, the filmmaker is looking forward to the release of his upcoming feature "Unnchai", a drama about four friends, played by Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani and Danny Denzongpa. Parineeti Chopra, Neena Gupta, and Sarika also round out the cast of the film, slated to be released on November 11. Post "Unnchai", Barjatya said he will focus on a string of projects, including a web series, a movie with his frequent collaborator and friend <keyword id="6354583" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="salman-khan" source="Orion">Salman Khan</keyword>, and his son Avnish Barjatya's directorial debut. With Avnish's movie, the filmmaker will launch actor-MP Sunny Deol's younger son Rajveer and actor Poonam Dhillon's daughter Paloma. "After 'Unnchai', I will get busy with my younger son Avnish's movie, starring Rajveer and Paloma. As a producer, it is a big responsibility. After that, I will start my film with Salman Bhai. It is in family space," he added. Barjatya shared that it is <keyword id="6355601" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="khan" source="Orion">Khan</keyword> who often encourages him to make family-oriented movies. "He says 'I do my action everywhere but we will do family (dramas) together. He always encourages me to go back to what we do, he is like let's do the same thing... Like having a brother, sister and family because no one does that today. "He says, 'Let's go back to these (films)'. Essentially, it is a part of his life and even mine. Besides, both of us want to spend more time together," he said. Sooraj Barjatya to enter the OTT space, has three family-friendly web series under development

It is 15th of August in 1975; Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay has found its way into the theatres. While the country men have switched on the patriotic mode in them, Bollywood was preparing to redefine the arena of Indian commercial cinema like never before. A film that defines patriotism in a newer way, thrills with its suspense even if you watch it for the zillionth time and shows how a friendship in India thrives has come a long way and it’s now a part of every Indian’s growing-up discourse. 
This Independence Day marks the 40th anniversary of Sholay. Anupama Chopra, the renowned film critic has said in her book ‘Sholay- The Making of a classic’ (Penguin India), “Over the years, Sholay, has transcended its hit-movie status. It is not merely a film, it is the ultimate classic; it is myth.” 
 
While, over the last 40 yrs much has been said and written about the film, we at Business Insider list for you 20 amazing facts you still don’t know about Sholay: 
 
 
1. Sholay is a record breaker in many ways. It is also India’s first 70 mm film, which had stereophonic sound. 
 
2. Amjad Khan’s ‘Kitney aadmi the’ dialogue has become a cult. Yet, Khan was almost rejected because the casting director found that his voice was not ‘powerful enough’. 
 
3. Many things about this movie were real even the bullets in the climax scene. It is said that one spare bullet had nearly missed Amitabh. 
 
4. Gabbar’s gang member Sambha was played by Mac Mohan. Though he has become an indispensible part of the movie, he just has one dialogue in Sholay. 
 
5. Amzad Khan wasn’t the first choice for the role of Gabbar. It was Danny Denzongpa who was supposed to play the role. 
 
6. What DDLJ is to Maratha Mandir, Minerva Theatre of Mumbai is for Sholay. This theatre screened Sholay for 5 years continuously in all three shows of the day. And till 1980, it was a major hit. 
 
7. Sholay has proved this long back that awards don’t determine a movie’s credibility. Though a blockbuster, Sholay had won just one Filmfare award, that too for editing. 
 
8. The movie, after the initial part, is all about Gabbar and his notorious activities. However, in a 204 minute film, Gabbar appears in just 9 scenes. 
 
9. While the official release date was 15th August 1975, the movie was launched on 2nd October in 1973. 
 
10. Estimated at Rs 2 crores, Sholay’s budget over ran to an extra one crore. It took almost two and a half years to complete the movie. 
 
11. Previously, scriptwriters weren’t really paid in Bollywood. Sholay changed everything. It set the scripwriters as real creator of hit movies. 
 
12. Getting requisite permissions had prevented Thakur Saab from being an army officer. The character of Thaakur saab was conceived as a retired army officer. Having not got necessary clearances from the army, the role was changed to a police officer. 
 
13. The role of Jai played by Amitabh Bachchan was initially planned for Shatrughan Sinha. 
 
14. Dharmendra was nursing a deep crush on Hema Malini during the shooting of the film. He wanted to play the role of Thakur initially, but settled for playing Veeru when he realized that the character would be paired against Hema Malini. 
 
 
15. The light boys were bribed by Dharmendra to spoil his scenes with Hema Malini. This led to numerous retakes and Dharmendra’s chance of getting closer to Hema intensified. 
 
16. The original ending of Sholay has Gabbar being killed by Thakur. 
 
 
17. The Censor Board didn’t approve of too much violence in the end. Sholay was made to re-shoot several scenes to get rid of extreme violence. 
 
18. Ramgarh , the village shown in Sholay is actually a town called Ramanagara, which is 50 kms from Bangalore. Since 80s, it came to be called Ramgarh to commemorate the film.
